Welcome to a Sealed Primer review of Hammer of Thor.
As many long time HCRealms members know AZS has a long history of providing excellent primer reviews. I have been asked to fill in for this set, and like a clown's understudy, I know I have some pretty big shoes to fill. (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4418979&postcount=18) I can only hope I do the series some justice.
I realize that we're beyond the release date of Hammer of Thor, but feel there's still some value discussing the expansion for there are a number of venues that have yet to receive product, and a number of sealed events scheduled that makes a HoT primer relevant.
Please Read:
* These figures are compared only within [their respective] set, only for sealed play.
* There are only a few 1 or 5 [Shield] ratings, based on their sealed play strength.
So even though your favorite character didn’t get five [shields] like you think it should, the ratings are only my recommendation. If you really like a fig, by all means play it.
* Everything written here is intended to be very broad in order to give a general idea of what may or may not work - These are not specific suggestions “you must play this!”
These are just my recommendations, and the combination of figures on a team can drastically affect a specific fig’s overall effectiveness.
*!!* Lastly, this review is just my opinion, and these are a lot of work to write - so I ask you very kindly, please don’t get angry at me for my ratings. I give reasonable explanations for each choice.
If you disagree (and you are welcome to do so), please try to do the same.
Please note: All the dials coded below are pulled from the units section. My ratings use this information, though I realize it may not be 100% accurate.
I'll be using shields to rate the figures, rather than smilies.
:d-normal::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal: Unplayable
:d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal: Use only as a last resort.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal: Think twice about using this piece.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal: Fill out a team with this figure.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal: Strongly consider playing this figure.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable: A team winning figure.
So what do we have in the common slots?
ha001 E Bug
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 4 :bolt:
Points: 44
Keywords: Animal, Guardians of the Galaxy, Micronauts, Soldier
m-boota-fistd-normalg-starburst891728916289163781537814167141KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
Bug is average team filler. EW is nice, but won't ammount to much consistency with a 9 AV. 4 :bolt: range might come in handy, but isn't a selling point. Leap/Climb and Super Senses will make him a decent tie up piece, but if his rolls aren't "HoT" this Bug will likely get squished.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal:

ha002 V Kingpin
Team: Sinister Syndicate
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 78
Keywords: Martial Artist, Ruler

(Defense) Criminal Mastermind: Kingpin can use Super Senses and Mastermind. When he uses Mastermind, he can choose to deal damage to an adjacent friendly character with a point value up to 125 points. This damage cannot later be dealt to Kingpin.
(Damage) Hell's Kitchen is Mine: Kingpin can use Leadership and Outwit.
I have mixed feelings about the Kingpin. On the plus side, this plus-sized figure is the cheapest front loaded Outwit in HoT. He combines Outwit with Mastermind (and Super Senses) so he may be able to hold on to that Outwit longer. Outwit will be very powerful in HoT, making or breaking games by disrupting damage reducers and countering frustrating powers like Heimdall's "Sight of the Nine Worlds."
And yet at 78 points and over a quarter of the build total, does Mr. Fisk really deliver? Kingpin weighs in with a laughable 0:bolt:, 8 AV. Sure Wilson's attack bumps up to a 10, but only after he drops the Outwit. Do you really want to Mastermind damage off him to keep that 8 attack around, especially with all the 18+ Defenses out there? I say thee nay! Leadership might be good to boss around a bunch of minions, but playing him is a gamble. Kingpin has a place in the constructed format, but in sealed he's purely a finesse piece.

ha003 R Hand Ninja
Team: Hydra
Range: 6 :bolt:
Points: 38
Keywords: Martial Artist, The Hand

(Damage) From the Shadows: Once during your turn, if Hand Ninja occupies hindering terrain and has no action tokens, he can make a close combat attack as a free action.
38 points nets a potential free attack, a handy AV increasing TA, and some mobile blocking terrain capable of dishing out 6 clicks with B/C/F? I'll take two!
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable:

ha004 R Rock Troll
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 0 :bolt:

(Damage) Minion:We follow the strongest:: When a friendly character named Ulik is within 8 squares,Rock Troll can use Charge and modifies it's attack value by +1
Rock Troll gets extra mileage with Ulik on the board but isn't bad in his own right. A 7 click deep dial makes up for the low defense and lack of damage reducers - being able to soak 5 damage from one attack and still remain standing is respectable for a figure of this cost. He has some decent stats (10 AV, 3 damage) to attack with, but his true value may be as tie-up/Mastermind fodder. Not a piece to build around but above average filler.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal:
========================================
ha006 V Pip the Troll
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 42
Keywords: Brute, Infinity Watch

(Speed) Space Gem: Pip the troll can use Phasing/teleport. He can use it normally, or if he is not using the Carry ability, you can instead move him to any square that he has a clear line of fire to that is adjacent to both a friendly character and an opposing character. If you do, He can make a close combat attack as a free action.
Disclaimer - Pip is no relation to Rock Troll. Pip the Troll brings a mixed bag of goodness to a team. He's a transporter, which means he can move and attack, as well as carry. Carry, along with Phasing/Teleport should be helpful in positioning, and Super Strength will boost his damage output. With Phasing/Teleport he can grab objects from under Stealth characters and leave them out in the open.
Take a close look at that SP - it works on Line of Fire, which means in theory, he can move across the entire map in one turn. Note, however that this is not a transporter attack, so he won't suffer any -2 modifiers to his die roll. Pip will be instrumental in deploying ground pounders, and should make himself useful as a secondary attacker, but lacks decent damage output to remain a true threat.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal:

ha005 V Jimmy Woo
Team: S.H.I.E.L.D.
Range: 6 :bolt:
Points: 45
Keywords: Agents of Atlas, Martial Artist, Spy
m-boota-fistd-normalg-starburst791627916279162781526815168151KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
Jimmy Woo brings the SHIELD TA into play for 45 points. Knock him around a bit and he adds Perplex to the mix, allowing for a double bump of range, or damage. Jimmy's a great team player. Leadership may come in handy, and Super Senses is useful at least 1/3 of the time, but the Perplex/Shield combo makes him a winner.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal:
ha007 V Marvel Boy
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 8 :bolt:
Points: 102
Keywords: Agents of Atlas, Scientist

(Speed) Telepathic Projection: Marvel Boy can use Mind Control.After a successful attack by marvel Boy using Mind Control,he can use incapacitate as a free action targeting the same character
Avoid Marvel Boy in sealed. He has a fun SP, but at 102 points he doesn't deliver with a maximum 9 AV. Opening Psychic Blast might have made me think twice, but it's buried mid-dial. ES/D is respectable in a ranged heavy set, but his soft defense isn't going to last long with all the bruisers on the board.
:d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal:

ha008 R Phalanx Soldier
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 30

(Damage) Hive Mind: When Phalanx Soldier is given an action, you can modify his attack value by +1 until the end of the round for each other friendly character named Phalanx Soldier adjacent to it.
If only Phalanx Soldier had a ranged attack. He's pretty much sniper fodder, and solely relies on Super Senses to protect him as he moves upfield. Hive Mind won't get much use in sealed. B/C/F is always a gamble, but at 31 points this figure *can* help fill out a team if no other options exist. Try focusing on other opposing minions to get the most mileage from this robot.

ha009 R Malekith
Team: Mystics
Range: 6 :bolt:

(Speed) Fruit of the Faerie: Malekith can use Mind Control. When he does, he ignores hindering and elevated terrain and other characters for line of fire purposes.
(Defense) Lord of the Dark Elves: Malekith can use Psychic Blast and Pulse Wave. When Malekith uses Pulse Wave, he can choose to use his unmodified damage value and be dealt one unavoidable damage after the action resolves.
At 91 points Malekith ranks in as one tricksy pixie with his two SPs. The frontloaded Fruit of the Faerie grants Mind Control that ignores hindering, elevated, and other characters for LoF. The rear dial Lord of the Dark Elves offers both Psychic Blast and Pulse Wave. PB won't mean much with those middling late dial AVs, but Pulse Wave gets a boost - dealing 2 damage instead of 1 to all targets. TK helps control the battlefield, and Shape Change keeps the Royal Flush reject around to harass the enemy. The Mystics TA will make an opponent think twice before attacking. Malekith can't front a team, but her certainly provides adequate support.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal:

ha010 V M-11

If M-11 were a No Doubt album, he'd be Rock Steady. Steady attack, Steady movement and Steady damage that never drops. Defense is high, if a little bare, but it won't make much difference - hit him and he's still a threat. Regen helps him stay in the game, PB makes his damage stick. For 59 points? You bet.

ha011 V Enchantress

(Speed) Enchanting: Enchantress can use Mind Control. If she does, she takes 1 damage for each 200 points of the successfully hit targets' combined point value, instead of each 100 points.
(Defense) Devotion: Enchantress can use Mastermind and Toughness.
She looks good on paper, and even up close, but keep in mind fielding Enchantress is an investment in half your team. Perplex and PC are handy, but mostly she'll be using them on her low AVs. Mind Control is only as powerful as what the other guy is playing. If they're fielding a tentpole attacker, it may well be useless. Mystic's TA won't mean much if she's shunting damage to a minion, though it is nice to have, and works with Toughness to insure some feedback damage gets through. Surround her with enough low cost figures, and she might do okay, but I suspect she won't win many tournaments.

ha012 R Valkyrie

(Damage) Minion: Today is Not That Day: When a friendly character with both the Asgardian and Deity keywords is within 8 squares, Valkyrie has Support and can carry friendly characters with the Asgardian keyword.
Be sure to check your keywords in this set. Many characters like Valkyrie have powers that activate off keywords. Valkyrie makes a nice combat medic possibly gaining Support with "today is not that day" and also serves as a taxi. Her utility as a minion is diminished somewhat without a master, but the warrior woman remains one of the better generics in the set, with a small 4 range, 3 damage and 17 Toughness.
On her own, she's :d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal:
With an Asgardian/Deity figure :d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal:

ha013 R Bi-Beast

Bi-Beast is middle of the road. He's got a very respectable 11 AV, and 4 damage though in this set it's almost average. Damage reducers and a power set similar to all ground pounders make the Skull-Brother a durable attacker, but he really suffers from lack of range. HoT is full of ranged monsters, and Bi-Beast is likely to take a few hits before he gets into the thick of it. If he somehow managed to stay as steady as M-11, he'd fare better, but he'll really have problems when he gets knocked down to those 2 damage clicks. With the right support he may do well, but won't hold up long on his own.

(Damage) Minion:For Asguard!: When a friendly character with both the Asgardian and Deity keywords is within 8 squares, Asgardian Warrior has Charge and can modify his attack value by +1.
Asgardian Warrior proves to be worthy for battle, packing a big punch in a short dial. A potential 10 to 12 AV on every click and strong damage make him a threat. Toughness means he won't go away fast. Again, check the keywords, because full dial Charge is only good if you qualify for it.
:d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal:

(Damage) Minion: March to Ragnarok!: When a friendly character named Surtur is within 8 squares, Fire Demon can use Charge and modifies its attack value by +1
Fire Demon may look like a perfect taxi, but think again. That 6 move will get crimped to 4 when carrying a buddy. Willpower lets him do it twice in a row, which kind of makes up for the small movement, but you're still not getting very far. Again, another keyword check is in order, though this one's easy. Have Surtur? Get Charge. B/C/F give the Demon a nasty bite, but Fire Demon's just asking to be shot out of the sky with his glass jaw and low Defense.

(Special) Special: Thor can use Super Strength
Thor smash! The god of thunder is easily the set's point and click piece, a no brains all brawn attack figure. Running Shot, 12 Attack, 5 damage will let him get first strike. Indomitable lets him hit twice in a row. Double Bump range with Jimmy Woo and start one shotting the opposition.
Pick up an object with that trait in play, so in case someone does want to base him to shut down range he can smack back for a big payback. The biggest problem with Thor is his point value - with no Feats or Bystanders in HoT to help round out teams, the common Thor will have a hard time making a 300 point build. Make no mistake, Thor could win big - just play cautiously and remember what they say about putting all your eggs in one basket before they hatch.

I think you should use the by oneself/with leader comparisons for all the minion ability figs.
Wow, I loved reading Azs' articles and all, but find myself immediately agreeing with the assessments here with hardly a single complaint or disagreement. Concise, helpful evaluations!

I think the Phalanx Soldier should have gotten 3 shields. This set really doesn't have as much range as other sets we have seen. He has a decent movement which allowed me to tied up several figures and his SS helped him survive a couple of attacks. That coupled with a strong dose of BCF makes him a low point threat that can take the heat off larger pieces.
I had a harder time trying to use Valkyrie's SP since DVs in the sealed are high and consistant. Trying to keep her in the back so Sif or Balder could run back for a heal just didn't work out as well as I thought it would and her Carry is fine, but really, she is only getting 1 square farther than a Fire Demon.

I'm actually a bit behind on my studying of this set. Between the misinformation of the leaked beta dials and the difficulty turning the old style bases I just haven't seen everyone to sift for sealed gems. It is wonderful to see another primer.

Good review, but one question regarding Pip:
(Speed) Space Gem: Pip the troll can use Phasing/teleport. He can use it normally, or if he is not using the Carry ability, you can instead move him to any square that he has a clear line of fire to that is adjacent to both a friendly character and an opposing character. If you do, He can make a close combat attack as a free action.
Take a close look at that SP - it works on Line of Fire, which means in theory, he can move across the entire map in one turn. Because he's moving and not being placed (see OOTS Batman) rules of adjacency still apply. Note, however that this is not a transporter attack, so he won't suffer any -2 modifiers to his die roll. Pip will be instrumental in deploying ground pounders, and should make himself useful as a secondary attacker, but lacks decent damage output to remain a true threat.
What do you mean by that? He's using Phasing during this movement, so nothing hinders his movement, as I understand it.
If you are qualifying the reviews of figures based on pulling other figures:
Kingpin, pulled with another Kingpin is :d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal:

I cant wait to hear what you think about Captain America. I hope that I pull him and Thor on sunday's sealed.
ON the note of sp rules wording crazyness ; I would think that Pip would ignore characters for movement purposes beacuse it says phasing can use it normally or, so he is using phasing?

...OK, this was worth delaying the Munchkin Mafia for. :)
I'm not quite sure I would rank the Hand Ninja as a five star figure though - he's not quite a must play in my book, though I will of course do my best to fit him in. I'd probably rank him at four stars - or possibly four and a half. :)

Yeah, it's not so much that he can "tear it up" on his own I just think:
1. the Hydra AV Bump will prove extremely handy
2. he's one of few characters with Stealth in a ranged heavy set
3. he won't cost you an action to make an attack.
combines with his point cost, I think he's a winner. :grin:

I think the Phalanx Soldier should have gotten 3 shields. This set really doesn't have as much range as other sets we have seen. He has a decent movement which allowed me to tied up several figures and his SS helped him survive a couple of attacks. That coupled with a strong dose of BCF makes him a low point threat that can take the heat off larger pieces.
He's a borderline 2/3 figure for me. I left him at 2, because he's so fragile (compared to the other generics with Toughness) he only needs to get hit once, and he's out.

If you are qualifying the reviews of figures based on pulling other figures:
Kingpin, pulled with another Kingpin is :d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal:
2 Outwits, Mastermind Damage from one to the other, and then share that 10 attack.
Brilliant idea! :grin: I think Kingpin is the only SinSyn in the set, so the only way he's going to use that TA is with himself.
Now, maybe I should collect 10 Kingpins to make a Big Lebowski team.

I think the Phalanx Soldier and Asguardian Warrior deserve a little more respect. They sure as heck outdate all the other swarm pieces. Multiplex and Spider-Slayer don't ever reach a 10 AV, let alone an 11. They also have no potential for move-and-attack, without a waste of cardboard.

Ah! NOW it really feels as if the set's arrived... and my case still won't be here until the middle of next week!
Thanks! (Rep's already been given.)
I know what you mean. I ended up getting a brick last night just to feed the itch.
I think that you underestimated Bug. In the 35-45 point range which the majority of the "generic" fill in pieces fall I think he's far and away the best. 6 clicks deep, Super Senses with a reasonable DV, the Exploit Weakness to break damage reducers (his 9 AV isn't bad and it drives me slightly crazy(er) when a 9 gets downgraded), and L/C to get him into position. He's 4 stars at least.
Hand Ninja is no where near a 5 star piece. Sure the Stealth will protect him from range, but this is also a Charge heavy set and his average DV and NO protection will make him either an easy target, or someone that you can just ignore until the end game.
LOVE that these are back and I thank you sir for stepping up and doing them.
Long live Heroclix.
Now, maybe I should collect 10 Kingpins to make a Big Lebowski team.
Only 7 more Kingpins to go for me! (BTW, using all 6 existing "Kingpin" figures is 293 points)
I want to reinstitute the "Rookie Blob" lottery at sealed events: Every player contributes $1 before boosters are opened. The players who pull Kingpins split the pot.
Thanks for bringing back the primers.

Yea I played in a 400point sealed last night and pulled Thor and his two Asguardian minions along with Sif. THOR is an absolute Beat stick he got KO'ed once after my opponents piled everyone on but I was able squeak out the win with the minions, while thor did go down he took quite a few of the others with him. the other matches were nowhere near as close as Thor just sat back and devastated the other teams

I think that you underestimated Bug.
My initial assessment was a 4, then I realized that he had no Enhancement. A bit higher attack, a bit more range, even a TA and maybe he'd be a four. That's the problem with a 5 star system - it lacks enough range at times. Can we agree on 3.5? :p
Hand Ninja is no where near a 5 star piece.
I think the Phalanx Soldier and Asguardian Warrior deserve a little more respect. They sure as heck outdate all the other swarm pieces.
The way I see it, most players won't be building a team around the generic commons. They're solely going to be used as filler, especially with no feats or Bystanders to round out builds. If you have a choice between Phalanx Soldier and a Hand Ninja, Ninja wins. The Ninja's SP really sets it over the top. Should you burn an action to attack with a generic, or with another figure? Ninja eliminates that option by allowing both (assuming he's set up right). The Hydra TA can help the whole team. YMMV
Asgardian Warrior is a bit different - again, its playability gets a boost from certain synergy figures, but with such a short dial, no range, and no guaranteed move/attack, I couldn't give it a higher rating. :ermm:
Multiplex and Spider-Slayer don't ever reach a 10 AV, let alone an 11. They also have no potential for move-and-attack, without a waste of cardboard.
Spider-Slayer has a TA that gives him a possible 11 AV on his entire dial. Multiplex has a number of damage reducers and heals his fellow minions when he gets KO'd. Both have their advantages, especially on their respective theme teams.

Nice work! I think I'd have rated Thor a shield lower, for the reasons you mentioned in your review of him. Use him, if you can reasonably back him up.
I think I can agree on the Hand Ninja, more for this set, than others. The Stealth will be a big thing, with all the heavy hitter range monsters being pulled. There are a number of characters in the set that can still shoot through the stealth (Captain America, Daredevil and Heimdall immediately spring to mind), but I think it will still be a big advantage.
Wow, I loved reading Azs' articles and all, but find myself immediately agreeing with the assessments here with hardly a single complaint or disagreement. Concise, helpful evaluations!
Agreed. Azs' biases really blinded him with some figures. Thanos getting a 3 out of 5 rating showed that Azs' opinions were not always based on actual viability.

11/21/2009, 17:55
The Fire Demon deserves more than 2 shields. 33 points for a flyer with 10 attack, willpower, and 3 damage? He's far superior to the more expensive Rock Troll and if you play him with Surtur he becomes even more annoying, gaining charge and an attack bonus! Even if he doesn't get a chance to attack before he's blown out of the sky at least that's an attack your main piece(s) doesn't have to take.
Also I understand these are being reviewed in the context of 300 point sealed events but I think the reviews should consider their usefulness in other kinds of games - if you play with other sets or point totals some pieces become more useful while others are less so.

I have to agree: IIRC he gave both Metron and Wizard Shazam 2/5 ratings...a rating that IMO was biased by how those figures might expect to perform in a 300 point sealed event. Aaron's threads were a good resource, but his ratings always seemed flaky.

That's what followups (and the units section comments) are for! Nobody will fault you for pointing out other utilities, but for sealed...it just isn't likely that you are going to be able (for example) to make a Warrior's Three (or Runaways) team...or play Fire Demons w/Surtur.

I mostly agreed with the primer. I have to say though, only giving Marvel Boy 1 Shield is a little low. He's not THAT bad. I handled him pretty well in a 300 point game. Granted he was backed up by 2 other figures you gave high approvement of. . .
M-11 is so solid for 59 points it's almost stupid. Great figure.

enchantress - TWO shields?!?!? actually I think she really deserves more than just two shields....more go between 3.5 to 4 because she netted me 5 wins at two tournaments! Thanks to her perplex, 10-range, MC without getting damage feedback from 100+ points, TK, Mystics, many players are afraid to hit her than hitting Surtur, Fenris Wolf...because she can TK those Giants and has the same keywords Asgardian.
so really deserves more than 2 shields.
Congrats to Rollinsolo for winning the tournament today. :-)

And you'd give up the mobility for your team that her TK brings, and the MC her SP brings, and 2 range, and Perplex, and the ability to transfer the damage she takes - or just take the damage (at a reduced rate thank you toughness) and give one back for each time she's hit.

I think people are too afraid of Mystics damage.
Most HoT dial remain consistent enough to allow a click or two of feedback. I faced an Enchantress and knocked her past usefulness immediately - ignoring Surtur altogether, knowing that the two feedback damage was better than having two of my teammates turn on me to deal 4-8 clicks.
My rating wasn't based solely on that experience - I find Mind Control to be a Finesse power, all but untouched by point and click players. Enchantress is just far too squishy to be a viable threat in a 300 point game.
Now, players who know how to use Mind Control, and back her with some Mastermind fodder may do well, but consider what happens if she faces off against a Brute like Thor, or Odin. Yes, She may MC Thor to eliminate a minion, but she'll take feedback from it. And then what? If only Thor remains on the board, she's in trouble.
As for Odin - MC is completely useless on a one man army. So her use is situational, and depends on a lot of factors. Can it work? Sure - you've proved that point. Will it work most of the time? I don't think so. As you said - many players are afraid to hit her. But what if they're not?
As an aside - Enchantress will work wonders in a Battle Royal event, or even events > 300 points. Mystics seems to be a bane in multi-player games almost guaranteeing avoidance, and Mind Control is useful with so many targets on board. People WILL be afraid to hit her in those kinds of events, until she starts wrecking teams with Mind Control.

Again sorry To disagree but you described an Ideal Support Piece...in bigger games ..Sure Why not. But really..in a 300 point format, unless I was going for a theme, I couldn't see myself playing her.
Another Thing I'd rather play than Enchantress that could do very similar:
Karnilla and Malekith.
On the Toughness thing...If I was wanting to bypass the mastermind...I'd outwit it, ergo I'd also be outwitting the toughness.
I suppose it is Good to have toughness if she's all on her lonesome...but....

Hmmm...funny thing you mentioned Karnilla and Malekith because "my" Enchantress has fought them by MCing them both and had them kill each other. Heh. one setback for Malekith and Karnilla is that they don't have any damage reducers...easy to beat them and will take one damage feedback if necessary.
I used Enchantress to TK Surtur (and Fenris Wolf) to smash Malekith the first thing knowing that he's too dangerous if stayed on his first click....so better give him 3-6 damages and take one damage feedback...so he would be useless. If I see Malekith on the map, he would be the first person I will attack! Strangely enough, I have not fought Phylla-Vell, Thor, Odin, Pluto, and others. Mostly I have faced: Bug, Hand Ninja, Fire Demon (I really like him - a good hassler, I think the only one generic and a flyer who has a WP), Owl (damn....painful if you faced TWO Owls), Nico, Jimmy Woo, Moonstone, Rocket Raccoon (not bad!), and a couple of more that I cannot remember.
I am not worried about outwitters because they are FEW outwitters (maybe three?, if I counted correctly) at the Marquee. so far I faced only one outwitters in two tournaments playing six games...(Nico M, as the one).
We are talking about the Marquee, right? If we are talking about in general, then ah....that her ratings may go down a little because there are many outwitters, stealthers, etc out there that can make Enchantress less useful as a primary attacker, but may be useful as secondary attacker. But at the marquee, she is more useful. She was my MVP, helping Surtur a lot.

After playing against Kingpin in my second marque, I would have to up him to 3 Shields.
I am not a big Outwit fan. If I had the choice between PC and Outwit for my team, I would take PC every time.
That being said, Kingpin is a truly annoying piece. In a 300 build team, you will get one or two pieces on your team you can use for Mastermind fodder for his starting Defense Special Power. Over 10 pieces in the HoT have INV or IMP as their starting DV (not counting anyone that may have one of those defensive powers in a special power).
So you may have to commit a piece doing at least 3 damage to have any effect on either Kingpin or his fodder. And add to that the fact that 33% of the time, you are going to waste your attack against Kingpin because of the SuperSenses.
And then you also have to take into account that Kingpin is only 25% of the build and do you even go after him?
His Outwit may not win you the game, but it definately slowed my Thor down when Kingpin Outwitted his Indomitable and let his team get into position (or just take a round to clear so he didn't push).
And if you do damage Kingpin, and in HoT, he is getting hit for three or four clix probably, he just ends up being able to dish some decent damage with a decent AV.
I have a new respect for the piece.

I only see a couple of things to disagree with, and one overall comment.
The comment? Everywhere I have been playing has been doing 400 point sealed. Makes Thor that much nastier.
Jimmy Wu: Can't see him providing that much value, really.
Asgardian Warrior needs a conditional extra shield, because if his minion power is activated, he's an absolute beast.

What do you mean by that? He's using Phasing during this movement, so nothing hinders his movement, as I understand it.

I hate to do conditional Shields. It's a door I hate to open, because then I could have two, or even 3 ratings for figures:
If you pull mastermind fodder: add a shield!
If you can use the special keyword based power: add another shield!
There's also a lot of borderline figures in this set that could be good or great, depending on what else you pull. I figure most players are smart enough to know to play the minions with their bosses to get the added value.
As for Jimmy - I think he works better with ranged teams. I wouldn't make big sacrifices to put him on a team though. I'd try and get him to Perplex right away. Perplex & the SHield TA will make a big difference this game, hitting high defenses and helping HAMMER home damage. Every extra click of damage is one click closer to victory!

I have to disagree about the rock troll though. They are a pain to take out. I used mine to tie up my opponents figures all the time. As we were playing 400 sealed he wasn't a large investment either. I'd give them at least 3 shields.

But with so much of this set being close combat, and so many high cost figs, you'd pretty much only get your Woo on if you had 45 points left over. He doesn't contribute much on his own, and what he DOES bring just doesn't feel necessary in such a high-end game. Perhaps if your team was Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, and Meteorite; but I'd recommend Karnilla if you can afford her long before I'd go for Woo. I say examine your team, rather than a must-play. :d-indomitable::d-indomitable::d-normal::d-normal::d-normal:

Just like everyone predicted, this guy is a beast. It's not like at any point on his dial he's particularly intimidating. He's not incredibly great anywhere, and you'll work a bit from time to time to give him an assignment. But he's ALWAYS that moderate-level contender. ALWAYS! There's no 'disable and ignore'. It's KO or face the consequences. You're looking at a minimum of 4 attacks to KO him, assuming one will miss that opening 18 defense; and you cannot afford to leave him on Regen either. 5:d-indomitable:, if it were to go to only one figure in the set, would go to him.

Thor has all the makings of being great, but there's one unexpected weakness to him, and it's one of the big controvertial figures in the set: Ulik. Yes, Ulik is laughable against swarms. Yes, he's not going to show up often, based on people's opinions on him. But when Thor eats up all but 74 points, your backup better be worthwhile. It doesn't matter how much damage Thor's doing; he's got to hit Ulik 6 times to KO. And Ulik has about 180 points of backup.
Thor is the godliest of all the gods in this set; even Odin, in all his glory, is a worse team build because he IS the team. Thor is very likely worth 5:d-indomitable:, but anyone playing him has to remember that anyone NOT playing him is prepared to face a centerpiece team, as Thor is merely the top dog of a dozen other godly centerpieces or army leaders.
If your build is 400 points, play him for sure. If it's 300, don't use him without a GREAT secondary figure. Thor can't do it all by himself.

I played Thor in a 400 and he got owned once by Ulik and again by Volstagg. They had help, but so did I. Of course my help was 100 less.

Has anyone mentioned that Bug indeed has the Defenders TA? That could give him the edge over other figures in the minion price range. Granted, it is a TA that needs another figure to be useful (at least until the GotG Alternate TA is available) but Bug can be a nice addition to a Defenders chain as well.

I got a bug today, and yes he can use Defenders. That will help somewhat with his pal Starlord's 16 D.

MAN, am I glad to see this back on the main page. Some good reviews, for the most part I like what I see (especially Thor, man does it look like he can bring the THUNDA', pun intended). I'm a little bit in the poor house, but as soon as possible I'm grabbing me up some clix. CLIX RETURNS!

great and fun review - thanks! have to say asgardian warrior is 4 shields - very efficient and useful and cheap for sealed.
also jimmy woo seems too high points, too low attack and dmg to pick. 2 shields or less. getting to his middle dial is not a good bet and would still take finesse at that point to use properly. wish'd he was better...i don't know the character but if he is martial artist and shoots guns...shouldn't he have high attack, dual target, EW for martial arts...that was weird and boring dial amidst alot of interesting designs.

Common Thor is a beast. I haven't played much over the last couple of months, kinda waited for the new set. But, this was really my first night back and we had a booster draft. First booster I pulled Thor and filled out a team for 400 pts. The third round had some tough opposition Phyla-Vell was on that team. Thor hit first, she missed the s-s roll and Thor nailed her for the 5, then Moonstar finished her off in the first round with her p-b.

I think when you look at what Jimmy can do on his own, yeah - not that great. It's what he adds overall to the team that makes him worthwhile. Enhancement/Perplex/Ranged bump for ranged attackers is amazing. There's not a lot of Stealth in the set, so ranged attacks should carry a lot of weight.
Now, if you have no other solid ranged attackers, I'd put him back in the box, and focus more on ground support.
