View Full Version : WK Retiring CT???!!!
I overheard from a guy that works at one of the comic book stores in my area that Clobberin Time will be the first set that Wiz Kids will retire?
This is the first time Ive heard WK will be retiring any of its sets.
Does anyone have any information on this?
Does anyone know when and what set WK plans to retire first?
I just gotta know!
This is actually quite common with WK, although if you are new to their gaming, you may not realize it. Generally, when a platform takes off well, in order to make room for more expansions, they have to eventually quit making the older ones, to free up production machines, painters, warehouse space, etc. for the newer products. They have done this with MageKnight, retiring the first 3 sets now. Don't be surprised to see the first set of DC retiring in a few months.
but do u know when it is coming up? like what set do u think will be first to go? and would prices rise?
of COURSE IC will be the first set to go, it was the first set made right? and the largest. To me anyway, it just wouldn't make sense to retire clobbering time, would it? Of course, that's just what I think, and what do I know about anything? they could keep IC running and retire CT cause it's a smaller set with less major characters.

You cant retire IC its the only STARTER set. Nuff said, thats the reasoning.

As Trust said, with a bit more..
IC won't be retired until a new Marvel Starter set is released. Containing the rules, PAC, and the tokens, etc. If Wizkids keep to patern, Clobbering time will be the first to be extinct. There's no garrentee when. As for prices for CT? Of course they will rise when they are gone, that's how things work.
Previous examples of this(The Retiring of sets.) has been recently shown with Mage Knights Lancers and Whirlwind, which news of it were on the Main Wizkids site, not too far back.
It's nothing to get excited or worried about. From what I've seen, everyone usually has plenty of time to get their fill, before they are gone.

retiring Is not more printing and getting all the stock on the market.
IC, you said it yourself is the largest set.
CT has the vaunted Nightcrawler in it,it's also hard to get in Europe because America gets like 70%? of all Heroclix and whe're running on no CT for some weeks now !
CT Must sell better then IC because collectors already got a full set and players want the new sets to complete their favourite teams (a.k.a. Nightcrawler).
all sets have a certain amount of figs/boosters/(starters) made and when WK can no longer supply the retailers with the boosters the set is "retired", though you can still find boosters of CT.
retailers are therefore putting IC on sale (at least in America) because they don't want to get stuck with the last booster/starters nobody wants to buy anymore !

It's unfortunate that the game's a victim of its own success in this respect. As stated, resources need to be freed up to make room for new sets / new sales. On the one hand, this is great, as it means game longevity and lots more super-cool MARVEL clix.
On the down-side, not everyone is able to afford to buy bulk and get complete sets or the rare/unique clix characters the really want in one go. It's an expensive hobby for non-wage-earners
(for this read 'kids').
The only alternative is therefore to buy singles. Market demand affects price and if a set is retired, key clix figs will I'm sure increase in 'value'. A sad fact of life for those left with gaps in their collection(s).
To off-set this, it's hoped that Wizkids will re-launch the game after a couple of years, with a new 'core' starter set featuring all the favourite characters and ironing out any rules glitches (and including some nicer-looking maps maybe? hint, hint). Much the same way that M:TG has regular base set 'editions' only perhaps not as often!
Aside: I used to collect & play M:TG a lot but the frequency of sets, rotation from tournament play, singles prices and overall cost of keeping up with the relentless pace of the WOTC machinery was too much and I fell by the wayside... HEROCLIX gets my pound (er... dollar) these days.
Moral: If you can afford it, buy bulk (1 or 2 sealed cases), trade to complete set if necessary. Keep a small number of dupes in case of breakages etc. Help out friends and/or forum members less fortunate than yourself with the odd clix 'donation'.
No one can criticize anyone who invests in rares/uniques in the hope they will increase in 2nd hand sale value. It's a free world (mostly) after all. However, I'd be prepared to argue that such a person shouldn't be in this 'forum community'.

Well, for Mage Knight, I know they did make an 'unlimited' which was pretty much reprinting of figures. Though as I don't play the game, I'm not sure if it was just solely the main set. (In our case it would mean IC) Or if it had other expansion figures in it as well. (CT, X) We'll just have to see, it's still available for the time being, so will just have to enjoy that, as much as one is able to.
In Magic: The Gathering, they revise the main set and always have (if I remember) the latest 3 expansions in tournament play. Anyone know how Mageknight works? Are any pieces banned/too old/revised?
What about sold in stores? How old is the most recently banned exapansion? How many expansions ago is that?
I imagine when the expansion AFTER x-plosion! comes out, CT will retire.

I'm gonna get mad if they retire CT...
We still haven't seen it around here!!
Xplosion coming out in March and still no CT... and now you tell me they'll stop it?
that no figures are banned and they will not ban figures. So in Mage Knight all of the older figures are perfectly legal. Unlimited was a reissue of most of the Rebellion (first set) non-uniques and some Lancers (second set) nons with brand new uniques. Mage Knight has the added complication of mounted figures, but at least now all of the Rebellion and Lancers uniques are totally out of print and some of the nons. In fact, the last three Mage Knight expansions are also out of print, Whirlwind, Sinister and Minions. Dungeons may also be out of print. With the exception of Rebellion and Lancers most of these sets are still plentiful in the store and singles are still available. Some Rebellion and Lancers singles are still available as well as boosters, but they are getting harder to find. By analogy, Clobberin' Time will likely go out of print before Infinity Challenge (since it's the base set). However, there seems to be plenty of CT in the stores and I don't expect it to go out of print in the immediate future.

First of all, don't get too worried, I believe MK didn't retire its first set until just recently, and will soon be retiring a second one (so it'll be a few more sets before CT disappears). Also, who knows, the popularity or heroclix is largely based upon the popularity or many comic characters, removing these characters could hurt sales, and Wizkids is likely to realise this. MK is a made up universe not known nearly as well as Marvel or DC, so its hard for people to get attached they way they do in the comics, so I really see it being harder for Wizkids to discontinue sets in heroclix as easily as they have in other games.
If they do drop a set, it will definately be CT, I mean how else could you get maps and counters, etc??? Expansions are the ones Wizkids cans, not the main set. Also though, it is quite possible after dumping a set or two they could come out with a new starter having minis from previous sets. No matter what happens you'll for sure be given large amounts of time prior to the stopping of a line to buy boosters to your hearts content.
God, I guess i'm the only one who is totaly CT'd out eh? I musta bought about 20-25 boosters, and in my opinion that was way too many for that particular set. Granted, I suppose if you guys in Europe are having a rough time getting it I do see your concern, but I wouldn't worry right now, there will be plenty of time to get ahold of them I'm sure.

You can't retire IC until you put out another STARTER SET... How else will anyone "get into the game".
Retiring CT makes sense if they're retiring anything...
I bet that the set after Xplosion will simply be a Starter Set and at that point they will retire bothe IC and CT. I would be like Mageknights where they retired Lancers and Rebellion at the same time. So if this is true, we still have till next year because they only make three set a year. Only this first one is for Marvel.

I could see us getting another marvel set before the end of the year, in mid November, right in time for X-mas. Assuming that DC release occurs sometime in the summer.
Actually, I heard that Wizkids was planning on bringing out 3 expansions each year. Even if that is false, November will give us plenty of time to enjoy CT.

Me too. The thing that pushed me over the edge was Maro's articles telling us why they made bad cards. That and any competetive deck had to include 3/4 rare cards, or it would get stomped. The logic behind making some cards rares (COTH is a prime example) just didn't fit.
Looking at any spoiler from Oddessey on, it is clear WOTC banks on marketing the chase rather than general quality. Lost my dollar! (Too bad- Invasion block was so good, commons and rares. I bought 2 boxes of Invasion and I had never even bought a box before.)
