For reference:

STAFF OF ONE: Once during each of your turns, you may give Nico Minoru a free action and choose a standard power you didn't choose during your last turn. Nico can use that power until the beginning of you next turn.

Now, let's say that I really wanted to get rid of whatever power Nico had decided to use, but I don't have any Outwit... I do have some Mind Control, though (plenty of that going around in HoT).

If I MC Nico, and then use my one free action with her to use Staff of One to select something unhelpful (like say Earthbound), would that completely replace her existing chosen power?

I'd think not, since Staff of One states that, "Nico can use that power until the beginning of you next turn." This means to me that no matter what power I happen to choose, while she is under MC, the power chosen by her player will still be there once she returns to her original team, even though I picked another. Essentially, because of my MC action, she'd actually have two chosen powers for a little while.

Thoughts?

(And, no, before anyone asks, I am not saying I'd like to MC Nico to choose HSS and hit her own characters or something similar. I realize that choosing a power with Staff of One is a free action and selecting a power is all I can do with MC... after using that free action, I lose control and don't get to actually use whatever power it is that I would select.)

I'd agree with this. Similarly, one could Compel her, too.

There's precedent with Outwit. If I use Batman's Outwit, then you MC him and use his Outwit, both powers are countered.

As far as I can tell, even canceling her power would not end the other power's usability.

I'd agree. The only thing in the description that makes the chosen power go away is the beginning of next turn.

Are you sure compel would let you choose 2 powers? It does seem to specifically limit the number of times you can do it to once in each of your turns.

Mind Control (either way) is like a "reset" button allowing things to be done again.

A classic example is Outwit. I can Outwit with my Batman and Compel him for a second Outwit.
