Who are the Runaways?
You’ve always known that your parents were up to no good. But, these kids' parents were Supervillains! So, in keeping with traditional teenage angst and rebellion, this group of kids band together to, well, Runaway.
The Runaways Roster:
While the membership roster isn’t full, (Xavin, Victor, and Klara, are absent), nor current, (as the set was delayed a year); these are the Runaway's featured in Hammer of Thor:
ha019 R Chase Stein
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 45
Keywords: Runaways, Teen
m-boota-fistd-normalg-starburst691626815258142571425714146131KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
(Speed) Leapfrog: Chase Stein can use Leap/Climb. Chase Stein can use the Carry ability to carry up to eight friendly characters that must have the Kid, Runaways, or Teen keyword. Chase Stein can carry friendly characters with the Runaways keyword regardless of their attack and speed symbols. Chase Stein's speed value is not modified by the Carry ability.
(Attack) Flame: Chase Stein can use Energy Explosion as if he had a range of 4.
Chase Stein. Winning the understatement of the year award, Chase makes a great taxi. It is worth noting that he is the only figure in the game currently that can carry both a flyer and a duo. It makes him beyond belief important when fielding the Runaways. He can also Tank around a bunch of teens. Just be mindful of flyers and duos if they’re not sporting that Runaway’s keyword as well. I feel he might be getting dual membership into the Teen Titans.
ha041 E Molly Hayes
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 43
Keywords: Kid, Runaways
m-boota-fistd-normalg-starburst69193691835816238151KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
Molly Hayes. I don’t like her stats. I really feel that her dial should have reflected her ‘needing to sleep’ after any sort of super-exertion. Maybe a click of super-strength with an 8 attack, followed by an activation click. Of course, it wouldn’t have been nearly as playable. This kid rocks! She can even break dance (place her sculpt up-side down). 19 defense with invuln and the ability to dish out 5 damage means she is going to be many team’s go-to tie up piece, or mastermind fodder. As far as placing young kids into dangerous situations to take a hit for the team, I think we just met the new Lian Harper.
ha045 E Karolina Dean
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 8 :bolt:
Points: 55
Keywords: Runaways, Teen
m-winga-fistd-normalg-starburst10101628916289152781517814167141KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
(Speed) Get Behind Me!: Karolina Dean and friendly characters adjacent to her can use Energy Shield/Deflection if they can't already.
Karolina Dean. I feel this piece won’t see much play out of Runaways. She is decent, and her special power rocks, but that power isn’t front loaded. Her stats are powerful enough to warrant status as a tertiary attacker, but, she seems to be built as the Runaway’s main guns. That 2 damage isn’t going to cut it. Which means, she is going to need some support. Hmmm?
ha047 U Nico Minoru
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 8 :bolt:
Points: 84
Keywords: Mystical, Runaways, Teen
m-boota-fistd-normalg-starburst691526915168141681415713157131KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
(Speed) Staff of One: Once during each of your turns, you may give Nico Minoru a free action and choose a standard power you didn't choose during your last turn. Nico can use that power until the beginning of you next turn.
Nico Minoru. Nico is the Green Lantern of Heroclix. She is only limited in usefulness by your imagination. Her special power is the best in the game. Need TK? Check. Karolina only sports 2 damage? Enhancement or perplex. Team-member take a hit? Support. Nico got hit? Regen. Need to push? Lady Willpower! Swarmed? Oh, no. Now she has poison. As along as she switches powers every turn, she is your huckleberry.
Only she doesn’t have the stats to back it up. Or does she? Certainly within the Runaways’ she’s going to be a soft target. Keep her safe, a little in the back (her 8 range helps with this). Only use defensive powers like Imperv, when you have to (she needs to be offensive). Outside of Runaway’s there are a few friends she might find to help her stats. 'Mystical' Dr. Strange, or 'Teen' Shadow Lass are only too happy to lend a defense boost. Contingency plan, on her leadership clicks, will take care of the rest. Based on this thread (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?&p=4424847#post4424847) it's up in the air as to whether she can be assigned certain feats. If she can, then auto-regen should be interesting.
Everybody Walk the Dinosaur

ha058 U Gertrude Yorkes & Old Lace
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 54
Keywords: Animal, Runaways, Teen

(Attack) Arsenic: Once per action when an opposing character moves into a square adjacent to Gertrude Yorkes and Old Lace, that character is immediately dealt 1 damage before it can make any attack
(Damage) Lend a Dino: When an adjacent friendly character makes a close combat attack against a single opposing target, if Gertrude Yorkes and Old Lace are also adjacent to that target they can make a close combat attacke against that target as a free action.
Gertrude and Old Lace. I'm a little upset about the low defense. A five year-old Molly can get a 19, but a deinonychus (note: not velociraptor) sports a 15? Their damage power is nice, but can be reduced, and with a lowly defense, is going to get sniped away. The best bet is to carry the duo with Chase, into base contact with an opposing piece, and force your opponent to push, or next turn, let the dino-duo show you how to Walk the Dinosaur. Look to see Old Lace teaming up with Devil Dinosaur and Sauron. If you do, you are probably playing me.
The Team:
Chase Stein, 45
Molly Hayes, 43
Karolina Dean, 55
Nico Minoru, 84
Gertrude Yorkes and Old Lace, 54
TTL: 281
The Feats:
This leaves you with plenty of room for your choice of feats. Here are a couple of suggestions:
Runaways ATA:
Runaways
Pre Runaways keyword
Cost 3 per character
All characters on your force are assigned this feat and have this team ability than any other team ability. Whenever a character with this team ability makes an attack modify their attack value by plus one for each friendly character with this team ability that dealt damage to an opposing character this turn.
This will help out with AV's for the team, as they are a bit lacking. This feat will only bring the build to 296.
However, you might want to try Contingency plan on Nico, instead, as that will be more versatile, and at a cost of 12pts, it will leave you room for 7 more points of feats. Other feats to consider are: Sidestep on Gert and Old Lace along with Armor Piercing, (which Karolina could use too), and of course, Lunge on Chase, and Unstoppable on Molly (hyperactive kids are never hindered by terrain).
The Map:
You might want a map that offers narrow corridors and passage-ways to make the most of Old Lace's appetite, as well as to make Molly a good tie-up piece, and keeping Nico out of harms way. I'd suggest either the Sinister Prison Map, or Arkyham Asylum. Looks like these kids are headed toward juvy.
Placement:
After Chase has gotten the team into the initial placement, (don't forget your cont. plan token!) break off the team. Keep Gertrude and Old Lace in the Leapfrog with Chase and base an annoying opposing character in such a way that if the rest of their team wish to flank the kids, Lace will be able to take a bite out of crime. Have Molly pick up an object and do her thing as mobile blocking terrain. Don't forget that she can also toss objects. Keep Karolina and Nico in the back and have fun with Nico's awesomeness!
Fan or not, try ‘em out anyway. They are very fun to play. If you do, let us know how they did! Also, who would you use to sub in the missing Runaways?

Dang, now I wish the GLs could get something like this.
Chase being able to carry everyone on the team really opens up a lot of strategy. I'm really thinking about him with Pounce, bringing everyone along for the ride, albeit just six spaces (or seven with some perplex from Nico).
Great article, but I just facepalmed as I imagined the Warriors Three completely clobbering them in 300 point format. Yeah, they're gonna need a bigger boat.
Besides fliers, and Gert, the only other odd ones Chase can Carry are R Mirage and R Shining Knight (Yep, room for two more teens and their Flying Horses in there With the Dino)
If he could have carried Giants, he could have grabbed Steel, Colossal Boy and Stature, but it doesn't say anything about Damage symbols.

I agree. But, to be fair, I think the W3 are going to be able to pawn a lot of teams in 300, despite their lack of mobility. The only way I see the Runaway's winning in this scenario is using the Hellboy water map with AP attached to Karolina, and Nico using PB while the rest of the team runs interference.
Oh, and if the W3 player crit misses on every attack . . . :(

Awesome! Rep forthcoming. We need a Stegron the Dinosaur man!
Also, while I know this is blasphemy, for my 300pt dino team, I was thinking of modding GY&OL by yanking Gert off and putting a Velociraptor from horrorclix in her place.

I don't think his special power will allow that, unless I've missed something obvious. They have to have BOTH the teen and Runaways keywords to be carried around in the Leapfrog.
That would be awesome, though.
EDIT: This post is wrong. I did not mean to say BOTH, I meant to say that a character must have the Runaway's keyword in order for Chase to disregard the speed or attack symbol. Apologies for a very poorly worded post.

I find Molly's dial to be very accurate. The rapid decline in stats and the short dial is her going to sleep. The Runaways are going to be awesome with some finesse. I like that attack value boost for the ATA but I thin it would be better to put Armor peircing on Karolina and add some inside ifo on Nico

LEAPFROG: Chase Stein can use Leap/Climb.
See I thought that too at first, but if you read carefully then you'll notice you only need 1 of the 3 keywords mentioned to be carried by Chase.

Sorry. Yes, I meant that Chase could carry anyone in the leapfrog with any of those keywords, so long as normal carry rules apply (i.e. he cannot carry fliers), unless that character has the Runaway keyword.
B]LEAPFROG:[/B] Chase Stein can use Leap/Climb.
He can use leap climb.

Got it. :) Normal carry rules still apply, except that he can carry up to 8 characters.
Chase Stein can carry friendly characters with the Runaways keyword regardless of their attack and speed symbols.
Meaning Karolina, and Gert and the Dino, are the only two atypical characters that can be carried by by chase at the moment.
Chase Stein's speed value is not modified by the Carry ability.
The -2 to the carry ability is not modified.
I still don't see it, but admit that I could be wrong.

No, what Cheese is saying is Chase can carry fliers, duos, and transporters only if they have the Runaways keyword. Otherwise, if they have kid or teen, he can carry up to eight while otherwise following the normal carry rules.
And yes, the Warriors Three stomp the Runaways. Fandral used Leap/Climb to base my Nico and outwit the Staff of One, then flurried her to death. I was able to take out Hogun, but didn't really do anything to the other two while they pummeled me.
Not Toro, Iron Lad, or Hulkling as they are fliers and not Stature because she is a giant. Only the runaways keyword allows you to ignore their movement symbol.

To carry others figs with flight, dolphin, transporter or duo they need to have the Runaways keyword. If they don't have that keyword and they are fliers, etc. he can't carry them.

This might skirt dangerously close to the Brilliant Tactician debate that's already taken place, but there's one problem with assigning Contingency Plan to Nico.
When the character loses Leadership or Mastermind, remove all contingency tokens from this card.
So if you're planning to build up tokens on the card, you're stuck having Nico swap back and forth between Leadership and Mastermind.
It's doable, but it seems a real shame to tie up twelve points and the Staff of One like that.

With five characters and no free move in a 300 pt game, you'd have to play rather passively in the early part of the game to get the most out of CP with the Runaways. Which someone could do, certainly. It's a little too passive for my taste, so I'd probably gravitate toward other feats.

Nice article! I played them against my bro last night. His team was Karate Kid, Klarion, Dream Girl, Hawkeye (Young Avengers version) and Chase Stein. We use no cards. Karolina and Molly were the last two figures on the map. Dealing with all that PC and Super Senses was a pain for me to have to deal with.
They were fun to use. What hurts them more than anything is their low AV, defense, and damage potential. Range also proved to be a problem at times. Nico is the ultimate swiss army knife, while Molly is a nice little brick. Chase was great as a taxi, but hard for both of us to get any attacks out of.
I'd like to run them again and fill them out with Feats to see how they fair.
Sounds like they ended up being a team of support figured. This means that, unfortunately, the Runaways probably work best when split up.

I personally think that only Chase and Molly will see play on the highest of competitive teams. Chase due to her SP (even with its keyword limitation its still useful), and Molly because she is a throw-away brick. Nico may have a chance, but I am not convinced. Her dial is too short and she is easily hit
Karolina doesn't offer much to any team, Gert and Old Lace's duo status seems like a hot and cold issue among players.

I can see Karoline Dean's "Get Behind Me" to be really obnoxious, particularly if its pared w/ someone who has a 19 defense. You'd have to try to hit a 21 w/ it, 22 if the person's in hindering.
We're just lucky its not front-loaded, otherwise it'd be downright nasty.

Young Justice love! (one of Peter David's better books, anyway.). I think for my next game, the Runaways are going to experience a technical malfunction with their leap frog and end up someplace where they face off against a squad of weirdly dressed, wise-cracking young vigilantes. A misunderstanding takes place, and the inevitable but cliche' confrontation ensues . . .
Back on track, good choice on Victor/Red Tornado, and it gives the team a little more mobility. Plus, you can tk out Karolina, give Nico TK, and have Nico Tk Karolina back to safety. Excellent, Smithers.

He kind of does. He picks up a pile of scrap metal with his magnet powers and stands on top of it. That's happened at least a few times.

Someone should have told Whedon & Ryan, then. That's the graphic novel I have closest at hand, and at just a cursory glance he was floating a couple stories in the air, crackling electrical energy, 2 or 3 times. And that's just a quick flip through.

Victor doesn't fly though.
marvel.com doesn't list flying as one of Victor's powers but wiki as this description of his powers:
Victor Mancha is a cyborg, created from the DNA of Marianella Mancha and the technology of Ultron. Victor was constructed using advanced nanite technology that will evolve and mature with Victor into adulthood so that his robotic innards will transform into artificial human organs, indistinguishable from real ones. Ultron created Victor with several computer-related abilities, including a high level of intelligence, vast amounts of hard drive memory (which Victor refers to as photographic memory), and the ability to communicate with other machines directly. Victor also possesses some level of superhuman strength, incredible speed, a powerful jumping ability, and an automated self-repair function.
In combat, Victor primarily employs his electromagnetic abilities; he is capable of directing high voltage electrical energy from his hands and manipulating magnetic fields to reshape and bend metallic objects. Much like Magneto, Victor can use Earth's natural magnetic lines of force to levitate and fly.
If he doesn't fly, and only has the jumping ability then there are more options for Victor... Cyborg has a nice fit, the Unique probably the piece of choice. Exp Ultimate Marvel Girl maybe or perhaps Rookie Aleta (only her AV is a little weak) but she starts with TK, L/C, and Barrier with an 8 range.

I am incredibly flattered that your first post to this forum was to ask me if that question. Thanks!
First off molly is a lot older than 5 but, that is besides the point. MOLLY IS SUPPOSED TO BE ALMOST COMPLETELY INVULNURABLE.
Other than that I liked this article
-The Invulnerability discovery is a bit new, from when she took a direct hit from the wrecking crew (c'mon, really?!). Not sure that the issue was out when the set was designed (could be wrong). Still, a 19 defense puts her 'invulnerability' up with Hulk 2099 and Doomsday's starting defense.
-I'm actually not sure on Molly's exact age, (I'm sure someone will chime in) but her age has been incorrectly guessed at least once as '5' within the comic series. That still does not excuse a 15 defense on the Dinosaur.
-No, I have not read every issue. My favorite arc though, was the Whedon run, and I love Jo Chen's artistry.
Thanks!

What about using the R MM Polaris?
However, I still like the idea of using Mut & Mon Danger's dial to represent Victor's ability to manipulate other machines (strategic database).

Molly taking the hot from the WC happened a long long time ago. Just after Alex's death. So, it was out when they designed her.
And Molly is 12 years old. Some writers write her personality as being much younger (like, about 7), some are a lot better at making her 12. this is why her age is often assumed to be younger than it is.
I like Molly a lot, but definitely like her better when she is written as her proper age.

I agree with this. The advantage for Karolina and Gert is they can be carried by Chase. You lose that if you try to play them with other characters.
Chase does seemed poised to get played the most, but then you consider his ability to carry fliers and duo figures is restricted to the Runaways as well. A "Teen" team wouldn't really need him, since many are fliers (Legionnaires, Batman Beyond).

Great article... Repped for sure!
nice insights. I have not had the chance to play them yet, but now I'll know a bit more what to expect. I got the complete team in my Brick, plus all the Agents of Atlas except Venus, who I still need. I tried playing them, and was really missing venus. I got mopped. But I actually Have Gert and Old lace, so I should give these guys a try~!
( I haven't read these guy's adventures since Civil War... but I am a fan~!)

Great article man. I'd love to see more dealing with different teams.

Thanks! I have a couple of articles of a different nature planned first, but then, I'd like to jump back and do something like this with The Guardians of the Galaxy.
