View Full Version : "Retro" Character Cards -- Should WizKids Make Them?

This idea has been around awhile. With the recent "print and play" discussion concerning HAMMER OF THOR card elements, I figured I'd bring it up again in Poll form.

"Retro-Character Cards": Making character cards for figures from pre-AVENGERS sets, and possibly making 'tweaked'/updated cards for AVENGERS and later sets.

For pre-AVENGERS sets, publishing cards could not only provide a handy place for keywords and character info, but -- with the advent of Traits -- might provide a way for "upgrading old tech" to be more playable in today's game.

To me that ads value to stuff that I spent a lot of money on way back when.

Could also add a way to tweak AVENGERS and later characters, such as cleaning up language of some Special Powers.

-----------
I've been experimenting with my own traits and such at home, but I'm not a professional game designer, so I'm always worried my homebrew designs are out of balance.

It would be nice to see something official from WizKids.

For further discussion:

1) How would WizKids pay for developing "retro-character cards"??
2) Should such cards be allowed in OP?
3) Add your own questions.

:)

I don't see why NECA should have to do this when it's easy enough for fans to make them. Whenever I make a mod for anyone I always make a card for them, even if the dial is an older one that doesn't have any special powers. An afternoon with a copy of Photoshop is all I need to whip up three or four bits of cardboard.

someone has already taking the time to do this. You can get every pdf of every card produced at www.mobilehorror.com as well. Along with almost all pdfs (including bystanders) that were ever published for clix. Blue Alto sent this link to friend and its great every character now has a card.

I read this wrong. I thought you was talking about feats and I vote "no" :ermm:

Yes, I will like old character cards JUST to see the "official" word about some figures secret identities and "reasons" for some powers.

(But I'm already happy with the customs cards that some great guys did with ALL the previews sets).

I have to say no with the fact most non char card figures are retired the time and energy that would have to be spent is better allocated to other things.

I voted yes, but I regret that upon further reading. The cards aren't 'necessary'; NECA doesn't need to spend their time and money filling in old Wizkids material; and it's something the HCRealms community is capable of doing.

I don't think "old tech" should die out; I still play lots of the old stuff, but having cards for all of them would be useless, a waste of space.

No. Save a tree. A card doesn't really change whether or not I will play an older piece.

I do continue to want cards for NEW figures, however.

I went with the "Maybe" because while I like the idea I don't believe it makes sense for Wizkids to bother doing any of this. That they've opened the catalog of Feats, BFCs and 2-D objects via Print & Play is probably as much backwards-looking as they should do... though I do like the idea of them being open to revising (expanding) the use of keywords so that they could add appropriate ones to existing cards in their gallery so that we could print out new ones if we wished.

I would say "no", or at the very least "not at this juncture".

I want NECA to be looking forward and concentrating on bringing us new and worthwhile elements. With the exception of some figures, the powers on the dial are clear and the keywords are already listed in many different sources.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea. Not at all in fact. I would just rather that NECA apply its priorities with an eye for the future is all. :classic:

*smacks forehead* I completely forgot about Blue Atoll's site.

Apologies to Blue Atoll.

Question to all: Should I shut down this poll then? I didn't realize it would be redundant or possibly offensive.

Wha? Who's offended? Now I'm offended!

Seriously, no. This thread is certainly nowhere near as redundant as several others currently in progress. ;)

You can get the community created cards for all the old sets at www.mobilehorror.com (http://www.mobilehorror.com). These were done by a realsmer and are a complete set fr all versions of clixs that didn't come with cards. I'd advocate that Wizkids either not do cards or just use these.

Well so much for those trees then

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Seriously don't save a tree. We can always (and do) plant more. Worry more about all the plastic, ink, and transportation fuel that goes into clix. Those aren't renewable resources.

Hey, I'm talking net, man. To do cards for old figures (as cardboard and not print and play) would use MORE trees than we already use. That's what i meant.

I hear you on the plastics, etc.

I like the idea.. but I don't think adding Traits to old figs would be the way to go.

It would help for some of those old dials where the printing was bad.. and it would be nice to have handy keyword listings..

But I'd rather they go back and errata some of the old keywords instead..

Cards that are "for" an older figure, but tweak/alter the dial, which is already printed, and alters the point total?

em... If I caught that right... Why don't you just do a full blown classics rebuild set? and use the old sculpts on revised dials? Wait, who wants to do that anyway....

Rather than doing retro character cards, maybe some scenario/s that are throwback scenarios (yes, it would potentially force out anyone who didn't have anything prior to avengers, but let's be serious here. how many of us out there would NOT like to dust off the old stuff and actually kick things old-school instead of worrying who's got what trait and what special powers are on what slots on who's dial?)

I'd put it in the judges' hands, sooner than asking for "revamping old dials" that too many people bash if they even see on the field anymore.

I voted "Other" because your comment after "No" couldn't be further from my view. My opinion is no, because not having character cards gives the player using the figures a strategic advantage. I would be hard-pressed to use character cards for figures that didn't need them since it gives extra information to my opponent that they wouldn't otherwise have. If I have a good idea of the dial, it's to my benefit not to give that information to my opponent.

And absolutely they should not change any of the old dials. They work fine as they are.

Character cards would be nice...there are some dials out there horribly colored (my old Ronan has first click Pulse Wave). I'm not 100% on traits, though it WOULD make old pieces more playable...but the Second Dial Initiative was starting that process (unofficially) as well.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter, so I voted NO.

maybe but what would it cost? And why couldnt some just be remade maybe with a little tweaking of stats to make them more playable in some cases. I wouldnt mind seeing it and bringing value to the older stuff

I voted other. I like the older figures. I just don't see the point in trying to do cards for them. Other than the keywords being handy I don't think they would serve much purpose. As far as trying to update them we get updated versions with the newer sets.

This is just what I think.

I think I want to see this in their Marvel Classics lines.
They could just remake the classic Unique Thanos from Infinity Challenge without the Flight stand and with the new trait...umm...Thanos has Super Senses and Running Shot...works for me.
