The New Fantastic Four
Welcome to the first article in a bi-weekly frequency that is aimed towards the die-hard comic-accuracy fans among this realms-community. Of course it is nice to build a team with Superman, Captain America and Witchblade…but many of us find more joy in recreating battles with famous teams and team-ups they know from a storyline they loved to read.
If you have an urge to play true to the stories of “Secret Wars”, “Maximum Carnage” or “The Coming of Galactus” then you should definitely click on Full Story.

Today kicking it off with…The NEW Fantastic Four!

We all know and love the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s first family, with the blue eyed Thing, the Torch and of course the Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic.
Although those four are the regular lineup of the team there have been different incarnations with one or the other member having been replaced by heroes as the Ant-Man, Powerman, Crystal, Medusa or the mighty She-Hulk.
On a few occasions, however, not just a member, but the whole team was replaced by four characters that make a very odd band of heroes:

http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=669&pictureid=7718

Fantastic Four #348 was the first time we saw SPIDER-MAN, THE HULK (then known as Mr. Fixit), the mutant LOGAN and Dan Ketch as THE GHOST RIDER reluctantly join forces while being manipulated by an evil female Skrull. It was a blast to see them riding the Fantastic Four Skycycle and battle the Mole-Man, his Moloids and pet-monsters.

A comic-accurate 400 points representation of the NEW Fantastic Four could look like this:

The team reassembled in Fantastic Four #374 as the first incarnation of Dr. Strange’s Secret Defenders. This time they had the tough job to haul in the Human Torch who had gone supernova and destroyed a whole quarter of New York. This was also the milestone issue in which Wolverine slashed the Thing’s face so badly that he had to wear a facemask for quite a while to hide his scarred face.

Of course there are many more possibilities to build that team. I chose the figures for “accuracy over playability”, so there surely are stronger alternate rosters. So far Wizkids hasn't given us a Hulk with the Fantastic Four keyword, but who knows what the future will bring? What are your ideas for the NEW FF? Post and let us know...and don't forget to come back in two weeks for more comic accuracy...

Hows about a NEWER Fantastic Four from one of last years "What if..." titles? Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk, and Iron Man?

wasn't it Spider~Man, Ghost~Rider, Wolverine & IronMan? wasn't part of that story something about hulk being to unstable to stay on the team indefinitely much like his founding membership in the Avengers? I seem to remember clearly seeing spidey, G~rider and wolvie in their snazzy FF costumes, and of course there was the addition of stark.

pretty easy swap really. SI Ironman is 188 points. he should be around the cost of a hulk for build purposes.

I believe it was Spiderman, Wolverine, and Hulk. Ghost Rider was vaporized by Thanos with the infinity guantlet. Iron Man was then asked to join the team.

I seem to remember that this wasn't so much a "team" as mid-90s ironic comment on how popular "cover appearance" characters are used to prop up titles when the sales need a boost?

The closest HeroClix equivalent would be a Firelord/Wasp/Black Panther team-up.

I like this article. Great job Doc, for putting this together. Could in future put some of these teams together:

Squadron Supreme
Astonishing X-men
West Coast Avengers
Alpha Flight (with Wolvie)
Marvel Knights (Secret war team)

I won't name too many. But just to name a few.

Keep it Going.

This is correct.

I've played both the new and newer line-ups a few times.....with these guys (ususally they end up being an Avengers theme team.....with is funny in and of itself :p )

But at least they look nice when I field them.........

Hulk (http://s446.photobucket.com/albums/qq190/555vinny/?action=view&current=IMG_0044.jpg) the locals have nicknamed him 'shiny pants Hulk'

Spiderman (http://s446.photobucket.com/albums/qq190/555vinny/?action=view&current=IMG_0045.jpg)

Wolverine (http://s446.photobucket.com/albums/qq190/555vinny/?action=view&current=IMG_0047.jpg)

I ran a few variations of this team for a while. The one I had the most luck with though used:
2099 Hulk 123pts
- Auto Regen 12pts
SIN Exp Spiderman 77pts
- Double Time 5pts
FF Vet Ghost Rider 102pts
- Lucky Break 5 pts
DoFP Colonel Logan 71pts
- Lucky Break 5pts
400 points

Everyone always went for the Hulk thinking he was the threat. But Ghost Rider would just sit back and pick them off with his Psychic Blast.

You've been a member for about 5 months. How do you know what people on this website want? It was a great article and there will be many more like this to come.

Unfortunately unlike the daily news we don't get news everyday about sets and what not. To fill the void this article was great.

The team may be unplayable in a "Restricted" format if that even exists anymore since we don't now how the new owners are gonna handle the old figures, but these teams do very well in game play, they are hardly unplayable. I assume you are new to Heroclix since you just joined this site in June and only have a little over 100 posts. Get some street cred before you make posts like that.

Thanks for reading.

It was only 1990... we were already that cynical by then. (Don't forget the Punisher cameo in the final issue! :))

As someone who has collected and played HC since Infinity Gauntlet, I say thanks for putting some thought into having fun with some of the older pieces. Early on we got excited about the pieces in each set even when they weren't all trying to outdo the rest of the set for powers and rediculous stats. For most of the players I knew then, the game was much more about the joy and fun involved in watching your favorite characters and teams coming to life on the map before you. much less about having the most impressive pull. Don't get me wrong, I love many of the changes that have resulted in this current, and very cool, version of HC. But many of us have been along for the whole ride and at one time, those "old " pieces and sets that "no one plays or cares about anymore" were pretty d@mn sweet. The game wouldn't look like it does now if it weren't for those iterations of the game.
In short (too late) Thanks for the post and for respecting the "old" pieces too. :)

I totally agree. I have been there for it all. And I love getting out old pieces and playing them. I usually play those against more unexperienced players who are using newer pieces because it is indeed a challenge to try and win.

Great article... for the first team, I would change out Armor Piercing on Ghost Rider for Swingline.

He is doing 4 straight damage... I would be more concerned having him get to where he needs to Charge, rather than making sure 1 click of 4 damage actually sticks.

Yeah, true. As I said, this is more about comic accuracy than competition.

Gotta give rep to you not only for the start of a GREAT and oh-so-obvious column but, for starting off with one of my favs, The New Fantastic Four!!
I love when these guys get together! Another fav time was when they were all together and they were living in the Baxter Building and you saw the Hulk putting his wife Betty(The Harpy) away in the Negative Zone until they could find a cure for her. I believe it was drawn by Roger Cruz. I have all of their appearances! I hate that so few Hulks don't have the Defenders or Fantastic Four keywords and even though he's fought them several times, he's still a founding member of the Avengers and has also helped them many times. And as Captain America once said to Bruce, "Once an Avenger, always an Avenger!". I don't care what Bendis says with his anti-Hulk policy! He feels that no one with the name Hulk should be in the Avengers. That includes She-Hulk. He said this years ago in an interview. Never cared for the majority of his work so, I guess that makes us even.

This is exactly why I play heroclix. I change my teams based on what comic I'm currently reading at the time.

Being the closet Fanstastic Four Fan that I am, I seem to remember when Sue and Reed went on their honeymoon, they needed Black Panther and Storm to "Baby-sit" Johnny and Ben.

MU057 Storm 100
SI113 Johnny Storm 100
SI114 Benjamin J. Grimm 100
AV024 Black Panther 92
Movethrough or Unstoppable 5

397 Points

You can add Lunge (5pts) to Black Panther if you want T'Challa to be a more upfront fighter with Ben. Unstoppable helps Ben by giving him 19 defense in hindering, while he moves at full movement to get in to strike. He can even bust through walls like Powerman & Iron First duo! Movethrough helps Ben avoid adjacency issues so he can clobber who he really wants to!

If you don't have Benjamin J. Grimm, or Johnny Storm, you can substitute the starter set ones... I'm sure that one falls over just as much as the LE. ;) If you can, have Johnny running shot/pulse wave first for maximum damage, (4 damage if perplexed by T'Challa) then have Storm follow up with another running shot for 3 clix. Then have Ben/Thing run up behind Johnny. Have Panther get next to his wife and Ben. Rinse and repeat, till all dandruff/er... enemies are washed out of your hair...

Nice article Doc. Yeah, I'm a homer, but I absolutely love it when this particular team gets together. Dug it in the nineties, dug it in the recent What If? book. I don't see a problem with Wolverine outwitting Thanos in that particular instance, he didn't do anything Mephisto didn't do in the original. Plus, if Infinity War is any indication, the absolute best time to play mind games on someone is just after they've reached omnipotence, so go for the gusto Logan! If NECA's listening, can we please have these four show up in the next set with the FF keyword?

On a sidenote, Batarang, I've seen maybe 6-8 of your posts and I don't think a single one of them has been positive or polite. Grats on being the first realmser on my ignore list.

Great article. Thanks for posting. I love comic accurate teams. I normally only play them for fun cause as we know for the most part Comic Accurate teams don't perform well in tournaments but still fun to play in scenerios.

The reason I decided to do a column on comic accurate teams is that we have lots of well researched articles on competitive teams for tournament play. Yet we didn't have a column dealing with the fun, non-competitive recreation of the teams (or team-ups) we know and love from the books. There's a lot of people out there who want to play comic accurate and only know that many team rosters. I'm just trying to spread some ideas for people to work with. Therefore I will do some very popular comic accurate teams (always based on certain comic book issues!) but I will also try and come up with some teams or team-ups a lot of folks will be surprised to see. So there's a lot of exciting constellations to talk about in the future :)

QFT!! The amalgamated/gestalt Hulk was my fav and then, they make him in the classic Dale Keown pose with the really big gun, Spider-Man TA and one of THE sorriest dials for a Hulk I've ever seen! He was THE Hulk. He was the collective whole of the very best of each Hulk persona. Then Bruce Jones comes along and we have Devil Hulk, Clown Hulk, etc. I'm glad they retconned that garbage away as one of Nightmares schemes to mess with the Hulk. Still, there should never be a Hulk dial with any 1s or 2s and not that many 3s.

When I first saw the title to the article I thought the New Fantastic Four from the issues where T'challa and Storm filled in for Reed and Sue after Civil War. I think all but Storm could be played with the keyword. Why did she not have it in the Mutant and Mathem version? Could be fun ...

Av Black Panther 92 pts.
MM Storm 100 pts.
si/le Johnny Storm 100 pts
ff/si The Thing 100 pts.

392 pts.

add feats to suit

could be fun Johnny and Storm handle range

Just for fun I played X-Factor(Havok, Polaris, Wolfsbane, Madroxes, Quicksilver and a Val Cooper pog) against one of the better players at my venue. He liked to use cheese but, he could still play well without it. He was a good sport. He wouldn't run away 'til the timer ran down or anything like that. He came to play so he'd stand his ground. He had one team that had Wolverine, and some others with tk and pb, but, my Peter David version of X-Factor beat him. I took out all of his people and he took out maybe 2-3 of mine. I played maybe 2 feats and he was feated up. This was before the 10% cap. We both couldn't believe it. He said he never expected his team to lose to X-Factor. We shook hands and laughed and he just studied my team for awhile and then we got ready for our next opponents. I've just always enjoyed that X-Factor team and only wished Guido had been made. It was satisfying to see them win even though, a lot of times comic accurate teams don't. Unless you're playing the Illuminati or FF. I love playing FF teams, original Avengers/Defenders/JLofA teams against people.

Therefore I will do some very popular comic accurate teams (always based on certain comic book issues!) but I will also try and come up with some teams or team-ups a lot of folks will be surprised to see. So there's a lot of exciting constellations to talk about in the future :)

Folks should pop over to the the "Combat Formations" and "Theme Team" discussions, as there are often threads devoted to exactly this. (It's nice to see them on the front page too).

I'm currently re-reading volume 1 of the Suicide Squad and posting playable line-ups from that run.

I've played the New Fantastic Four on more than one occasion. With more or less, this as the build as of late:

Spider-Man (SI) w/ Lunge
Rampaging Hulk w/ Protected
V Ghost Rider (Ult) w/ Swingline
U Wolverine (Sin) w/ Automatic Regeneration
400 points

It's had some mixed results at best. With little range, no Stealth and nothing in the way of support powers, mobility is crucial to the New FF. Using an older Hulk like from Critical Mass or Clobberin' Time might provide better range or attack values, their defenses are absolutely in the toilet. A number of Wolverine figures have the same problem. And there's any number of good Spidey figures to use, but the Secret Invasion one is cheap and good for his points.

All the heroes have been made. Some several times over.

Actually we're still missing Night-Watch.

Great article

Armor Piercing – 10 points – on Daniel Ketch

I would say put it on Wolverine instead, that way on those blades clicks you don't have to worry about rolling 1.

I have dreamt of playing a Proffesor Hulk with Pounce and Haymaker forever, but never got the chance.... Glad that combo got some publicity so someone else can try it

Seeing this article made me miss doing the Competitive Theme Teams article ...
Maybe I can get back to it once I am done with school...

My 300 point version of this team went like this:
Daniel Ketch LE - 88
Mr. Fixit - 104
Logan E - 49
CM Spider-man R - 59

Although nowadays I suppose the 50 point SI Spidey is maybe a better choice with the 9 points made up in feats... maybe Movethrough on Daniel?

My 300pt version is:

Ramp Hulk
GhostRider 2099
MM Zombie Spidey
Col Logan

=299

You have to keep GR near Hulk for when he gets hit off his SP. They make a great tag team.

You can also swap out Hulk 2099 for Ramp Hulk and get another fig that can carry plus 6 pts left over for feats.

some very interesting versions...most of them a lot more competitive, BUT far from comic accurate ;)

I'm not a big fan of the ironic 'new' F4, but I still enjoyed the article! Comic accuracy is the whole reason I play the game.

Gonna be keeping my eye out for future posts like this

any chance for a mega Avengers Cataloge of the team as it changes over the years or a Masters of Evil one??? guessing the avengers one would take months to compile though... still its a nice thought

Not necessarily. Far from comic accurate would be playing Spider-Man 2099, Ultimate Hulk, Zombie Wolverine and the Johnny Blaze version of Ghost Rider or something along those lines. But if you're playing the 616 versions of Peter Parker, Logan, Bruce Banner and Daniel Ketch, then you're way in the ballpark.

As a guy that plays comic-based teams more often than the standard purely competitive kinds of teams, I can tell you from experience that handicapping oneself just to be 100% accurate is counterproductive. As opposed to say, finding the middle ground where one can sufficiently meet the criteria for this comic team and still put up a solid fight once the game begins. I would not say Mr. Fixit is capable of putting up a solid fight in today's scene. But Rampaging Hulk, or even the rookie version from Mutations & Monsters? Those are certainly respectable pieces that are close enough to their comic counterpart to count.

Agreed for your suggestion sir, however, I rather meant doctor_x's team:
Ramp Hulk
GhostRider 2099
MM Zombie Spidey
Col Logan

Interesting choices for the team. I make comic accurate teams fairly often, but always try to weigh it to be playable as well (my Avengers issue #1 team is comic accurate and doesn't totally suck). I would definitely tweak the team and probably go for something that had more options.

I'd ditch Daniel for the FF vet GR. He actually has the FF keyword so he's still comic accurate and he gives the team much needed mobility. On top of that you lose the AP which he no longer needs with the psychic blast.

I actually would get rid of pounce too. Pounce on a top heavy figure that is already expensive is a bit of a waste. Give him lunge. I'd put passenger on Mr. Fixit which adds more mobility and will get him to his good clicks quicker. Other feat ideas: Spidey - takedown and maybe stunning blow, heightened reflexes, and/or vault; Mr. Fixit - double time (strange but helps his mobility and gets him to his best clicks real quick), contingency plan (would probably replace passenger/DT combo).

I think these would make the team play better and still keep comic accuracy (of course, you could always throw protected on everyone).

Totally agree with you on playability. However, the fact that WK doesn't know that the FF set Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze) was never a part of the NEW FF doesn't mean it makes him comic accurate just because they gave him the keyword (he never should have gotten) ;)

Another decent build is:

FF023 Ghost Rider 85
MU102 Incredible Hulk 113
SI001 Spider-Man 50
UI002 Wolverine 41

SIF004 Loner 5 on Ghost Rider
MUF003 Inside Information 4 on Spider-Man
SIF002 Infiltrate 2 on Wolverine

Not a team theme, but quite entertaining to play!

How about the Strong guy from Monsters and Mutations? Or are you only using older figures? Forge also worked with this team for awhile, and i was really fond of them.

Glad to see such robust conversation on one of my favorite aspects of the game; namely, the opportunity to "bring to life" some of my/your/our favorite comic story lines. Kudos all around! :)
