View Full Version : Who is the most useful figure in the game?

Here we are again and I am posing the question: Who is the most useful figure in heroclix? Again I am excluding the colossal figures, though 2x2 figures are allowed in this poll, should anyone feel they deserve to be so. The basis for this poll is, which figure do you feel is a mandatory part of any force fielded in the game. Which figure is absolutely indispensable and provides the most for the least in the way of points to field. That said lets hear what everyone has to say. Thanks for looking.

that old batman from that starter set that is 46 points.
because he is a cheap outwitter, he has willpower and his team symbol gives him stealth plus hes got leapclimb as well.

That's tough but I'll list some of my favorites (no particular order)
1. Man of Steel (200 points of greatness)
2. JL Green Arrow
3. rampaging hulk
4. SI Namor
5. Hot Ultron

Most useful? Nico, hands down.

Is she the best value for what she does? Probably not. But, that wasn't the question either. :squareeye

best overall support-----> definitely Crisis' Cheif, Support, Perplex, Outwit, leadership, Outsiders TA, and that nifty special power that allows his teamates to not take pushing damage. I could also point out he fits nicely onto many scientist keyword teams, or just a normal min/max team where he clocks in at 63 points. (lest we forget his respectable 9 attack and 2 damage!)

Best offensive supporter---> AA's lyssa Drak. TK, barrier, perplex, high move and phasing, we can add on her ability to pick off little pieces at range. 72 points? fits well with cheif

Most useful probber----> Scarlet Witch from Avengers. for 35 points, you get a free move via avengers TA (or thunderbolts) high range, 9 attack and 2 damage. flight. i pick her over destiny because of her ability to dish out damage, and her barrier abilities, the mobility is also a huge bonus.

those are just some support pieces that come to mind.

im not a fan of one trick ponies, so i look to package offensive abilities, with support powers.

Definitely Alfred. He cooks, sews, cleans, drives, advises, provides first aid...what doesn't he do to help out?

You were doing ok until you went & typed the portion I've highlighted.

Then you're question simply became irrellevent to me.

See, I don't hold any figure as being indispensable or mandatory. Yes, without a doubt, there are figures that are better than others. And yes, I'll make use of them.
But no matter how good a figure might be, if it doesn't fit the "theme" (be that key-word or otherwise) I've chosen to field? It won't be played.
Ex; Let's pretend that Howard the Duck is THE piece. Great. Now you show me how to make a comic accurate Seven Soldiers team with Howard on it. Yes. I'd rather risk losing another game than polute my "theme" by forcing your suppossedly indispenable figure on to it.

I hold a similar view concerning figs & sculpts. I don't care how great the dial, if all that's available is a craptastic sculpt? Then aside from in sealed, if I can't use a mod I just won't be playing that figure. SI Spiderman is a perfect example of this.

Dr Strange from Secret Invasion. He's a virtual Swiss Army Knife of heroclix abilities. Come to think of it, so is the Mandarian BiBtB figure from Avengers. The rings give him just about any power he could want.

Quoted for truth!

Back in the day when I would play min/max teams, there were several "indispensible" figures that I used. But since I don't play that way anymore...u pretty much summed up my belief on the matter.

And don't forget Jarvis!!! He even shapeshifts in addition to doing all the chores in Avengers Mansion.

susan richards..she can fly, running shot,tk, has a good TA for wilcards, CAN SHOOT THROUGH WALLS(not even supes can do that), and has outwit!! i know everyone doesn't have her, but she's just my swiss army knife, wrapped in a nice 120 pt. package!!

runner up is her queen..chase spider-woman! she slices, she dices, she can outwit you just by standing next to you(even you batman, and friends). she is a skrull for enemies, and whatever else is on the team for you. she has good damage, and can l/c anywhere she needs to go! she's another swiss army knife of a fig, and in the right hands, a monster! it's not my fault they made both of them chases!

If there was one piece which I had to include on any team I ever fielded it would be E Spymaster from Armor Wars. 27pts of all around awesomeness.

My runner up would be LE Ghost Widow. She's a bit more expensive but brings a lot of useful support to any team.

REV Lockjaw is probably the one that got the most use from me from all the support figs. Always had at least one in almost ALL my teams. Taxi, mobile blocking terrain, diagonal free breakaway, move and attack for cleanup or potshots, cannon fodder, free breakaway, breaking objects and breaking walls (vet).

Okay sure, using someone like Gorilla Grodd on an Avengers team would be silly, but you know that's not what the OP was getting at.

The figure I end up using most often is SI Spider-man. First off, he's Spider-man (2nd favorite character). Also, he's cheap, powerful, adaptive, mobile and not restricted. In unrestricted tournaments I pick (E) Black Cat quite a bit, but often enough The SI Spidey also fits in.

12/11/2009, 01:47
I would mark down Metron as the most versatile and thusly most useful to me, albeit expensive. He's chalked full of offensive, defensive and support powers. You can throw him on a team and play him however you want at any given moment.

For the points, I gotta go with Chief. He's 100% support, but he can be the driving force of a team. In a single turn, he's got the capability to take out an opposing character's defenses (Outwit and Outsiders), boost friendly characters (Perplex and Leadership), keep a friendly character from pushing (Manipulate) and get a beaten down character back into shape (Support). When I think of support for a team, Chief is always the first guy that comes to mind.

I don't think any character is mandatory for any team, but there are certain characters I consider for every team as I'm building it to make sure things go my way. Chief is one of those. Dr. Sivana is another. Dr. Strange, Skrull Ms. Marvel, Immortus.

This "survey" might work better if you were specific to types of roles on a team.

I would have to say the most useful clix so far is the John Holmes chase figure from the pornoclix line. Truly something to behold!... Wait, does that set exist yet?...sigh...maybe someday. Would be great with my Bradyclix starter set! Just imagine the chase Holmes vs. Super Rare Alice! Good times...good times.

ok..so i had to post again! now i'm gonna post my '' so good i have to make myself NOT use them'' clix. not in any order:

cr-sinestro-just a awesome dial! very true to the comic and can wipe the floor with hal!

si-elektra-just a monster of a piece for under 100 points! good TA to help ranged friends and acts as a good body guard too.

morbius- another just awesome dial IMO. his special power just begs me to play him! the look on someones face when you heal 4 clicks is priceless!

kc supes, hercules,namor- all three of them are big on my want list, but i feel dirty even reaching for them! they are just too good!

si-dr. doom- i love his dial! the sculpts itself makes me want to play him!, he's just a beast and worthy of the mantle doom!

wally west- free force blast!! thats big in games against figs like nightwing!

psycho-man- triple mind control with NO FEEDBACK is just nasty any way you look at it! he keeps that power his WHOLE DIAL! and can be put on some very good teams. i think him and destroyer are friends now!

My favorite that seems to make it on so many of my teams is V Johnny Alpha from Indy. For 64 points you get a TKer with stealth, 8 range, 11 attack (12 w/ 2000 A.D.), and 3 damage so once your TK work is done Johnny can come up and be a pretty dang good secondary attacker. I'll use Lyssa Drak from time to time too for the perplex if I think I really need it but then again for only 3 points more I could play Johnny and a rookie Con Artist to get the perplex if I really want it. Johnny has better attack and damage even after the perplex not to mention the stealth to hide and super senses for when he gets hit for 8 points which could free up room for a protected.

No figure is mandatory or indispensable on my teams. I like variety, and I like to play theme teams, so I tend to use different figures each time I play.

I have heard arguments for and against this topic from a number of fellow gamers and wanted to know if it were as heated a subject for others as it is around here. I personally find that I gravitate to certain figures for my builds more often then not and even when I try to stay with a theme there are figures that just really beg to be included in any team I make. I prefer to use a wide variety of teams as others have mentioned here but it just seems that some figures come out of the storage tray a bit more then others.

Ghost Widow, Chief and Johnny Alpha are all great pieces that do tend to get pulled out more than others for me, but honestly, I think my most frequently used piece these days is Skrull Infiltrator. I can always find room for a 25 point tie-up piece it seems. If there wasn't a 10% feat rule, it'd just be another fortitude for me, but since I can't ...

Are you beaming over a piece that causes your friends to not even want to play with you? :surprised

I'm with those who are differentiating between indispensible (no such thing) and frequency of use.

Skrull-o-jacket is just so good, that he often begs to be used. He can Psi-blast for 4, two turns in a row, Outwit you (or your TA!), and then shrink behind some stealthy buddies. Too cruel.

But I've been playing the Doombot 5923's extensively recently. Whether on a Armor or Robot team, they just make everyone around them better -- and they're not too bad on their own, either.

If I have to pick the figure I use the most, I'll probably go with SR Scarlet Witch.
Of course, that has to do with me playing a lot of Avengers team, and Wanda being a core member... but it's a darn good figure nonetheless. :)

JDKenada

I suppose if I had to pick a single figure I use more than others, it might be Origins Sandman. But even saying that, I can't recall the last time I used him.

Ah, gotcha.

My friends still laugh about the first game they ever played with me. I told them to pick whomever they wanted for their team, 400 points total. They went with Unleashed GL, Spider-Man, a few others. I grabbed U Commissioner Gordon and a tonne of old Gotham PD. And rookie Swamp Thing for laughs. They cleaned my clock, but I showed them how strategy can come into play. It was a hoot.

No love for Rip Hunter? NO LOVE FOR RIP HUNTER?! I still love you, Rip... You're the best support piece EVER!

12/17/2009, 17:51
I gotta say that may favorite supporters would have to be Rookie Jean Grey. 31 point for about four clicks of TK. Dr. Strange from SI. He has Spiderman and the great perplex and can see almost anywhere. He'd be better with Psychic Blast instead of Incapacitate on the first click. Last one for support would have to be Common Batman from JL. Great mobility and 75 Points.

For hand to hand offense i just have to name some favoite's such as Iron Fist and Hercules from SI. At range strategy's can be placed very well so I like hooking up great strategy's like Iron Man form SI with Armor Peicing and Graviton from Supernova with Stunning Blow and Armor Peicing. Though all thse figures are great by far one figure, atleast I believe, outrank all of these and that is Veteran Icons Superman. He's a Superman that's powerful and to the point. He's just great.

Namor SI is incredible, fits in both low-cost and high-cost games - cleans the table. Scarlet Witch SR is useful in any team, too darn cheap. SI Spider-Man is a true beast with his leap/climb/flurry/att 10/3 dmg for friggin 50 points. Gotham City Detective is an insanely good support piece and in itself a useful tie-up'er. The Thing F4 starter is close to the Namor category. The Question AA is too good to be true for the points, fit her in everywhere. Mockingbird Vet is an old song, probably still the best tie-up character. Annihilus SI is a lazer burning slicer with Running Shot, 4 dmg and Psychic Blast and later attack 12 and Pulse Wave, good regeneration possibilities - for 127 points. Don't forget Dr. Midnite for healing. Kid Flash CR, has a Feat ever suited a character better than Maneuver on this lad? Superman Icons Vet - the best of speed, attack, damage, defense, this character is rudely unfair. Then there's Ms. Marvel, Gamora, M-11, Oots Batman, Thor HoT, Karate Kid, Lockjaw...

12/17/2009, 18:56
I'd have to agree with the Theme sentiment. And OotS has a good chunk of keywords, but how many of those do you really use?

I'd have to go with any figure that sports the most of the top keywords:

Scientist
Spy
Warrior
Martial Artist
Mystical
etc...

Teen and Future should be on there too, even if just because the Legion starter added a lot of good Teens and Future characters to the game.

Lol, true, he doesn't screw up theme team bonus, is great for your wildcards, can be used as mastermindfodder, or just as mobile terrain. All in all the _most_ useful character pr POINT value. ;)

I have very few figures i find indispensable to the point of fielding them whenever they are comic accurate and have the right theme team.

But some of the figures I do like, and have played often the last two years is Nightshade and Street Thug from AA, Namor from SI, Gargoyle from Avengers and Timber Wolf from LoSH.

Generally I like figures that can offer many options tactically as well as strategically.

very good thread I am going points and utility

Well let's start with support pieces, Chief, Clea,Dr strange SI Reed Richards, FF
primary attackers Namor, captain america hot, thing FF,
utility pieces spider-man si, electra si wiccan teleportation power he has is awesome I hate this piece i have chased him around many maps trying and cap his little avenger butt
