I'm going to my first tournament on Saturday. It's a local small town tourney and from what I've heard...the cheese factor is not really high. It's 300 points mixed Marvel and DC. I'm not certain if there are any side rules (MOD copying Bat team).

As my brain is completely fried on team building (I always have advice for others...can't come up w/anything for myself)...I've expanded on my current Hydra team. If anybody has suggestions on a great 300 pt team...let me know. I have all Marvel nons except for E/V Firelord. I also have a decent number of uniques.

Either way...my fun...sorta fresh...nobody will ever expect Hydra team follows:

1 R Hydra Op
2 E AIM Agents
2 V AIM Agents
1 R Hydra Medic
Red Skull
V Bullseye
E Sabertooth
V Doombot
R Vulture
R Black Panther

Strategy is to commit the grunts forward, drawing my opponent out. Both Bullseye and Saber can be committed against the same target in the same turn. BP is available for whatever outwit support that I'll need against a 300 pt team. I didn't want to throw BP in (not the theme) but I figure if I'm going to have a slight chance of survival...he would give it to me.

Do I have some concerns, oh yeah. Most come from the DC side of the house.

Those of you thinking I'll need luck...wish it now.

Heh. Good luck.

Yeah, I think the BP will help...without him, you would have major trouble vs. Invulnerability. As I'm sure you know.

I'm unsure about E Sabretooth and R Vulture, but that's mostly because I'm not much of a fan of R Vulture. Oh, wait...you need Vulture for Bullseye. I'd be tempted to say that you should go with V Sabretooth if you can get away with it. On the other hand, V Pyro would have some nice synergy with all the Hydra.

And I think the R Hydra medic is sketchy. Any chance of an E/V AIM medic?

How about this?

Red Skull
2x E AIM Agent
2x V AIM Agent
E AIM Medic
V Bullseye
R Black Panther
V Doombot
E Vulture
E Sabretooth
--300 points--

You lose one figure, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Trading the nearly worthless R Hydra Operative and the R Hydra Medic for the E AIM Medic and the upgrade to Vulture (not necessary, but might allow him to inflict a useful point of damage here or there) is nice, I think.

Hope the tournament goes well.

I took 5th out of 7.

Not great by any means...and here is what happened.

I played against 2 teams:

Team 1:
V Nightwing
Spiral
R Mandroid
V Scarlett Witch
Some form of Swamp Thing
R Hydra Medic
Some Checkmate Medic

Team 2:
V Torch
V Dr. Strange
U Nightcrawler
Yellowjacket (the one w/ no figure and a 20 defense)
Some Shield medic

Both games were played on the truck stop map.

Against Team 1:

His team stayed turtled on a rooftop for the majority of the game. I was able to pop Swampy w/ 2 good Bullseye hits while in Imperv was outwitted. From then on, Nightwing outwitted my RCE. Nightwing threw a batarang an killed my R Operative.

I moved Sabertooth forward via Vulture and stayed at the side of the building, out of Nightwing's view. Mandroid had not yet made it BTB on the roof where Spiral was waiting. Panther moved to a new spot and outwitted Swampy's Phasing, trapping him on the building.

Vulture carried Sabertooth to Mandroid and utterly destroyed Spiral's taxi in 1 hit. His figures were positioned so he could not retaliate. I withdrew Saber and Vulture.

All my other figures remained out of his range...and now...he could only walk slowly down the back steps w/his 2 hitters our l/c Nightwing around.

He did neither and turtled his team to the last 5 minutes. Finally, Swampy and Spiral started to walk around and in a fit of irritation (he would not advance until the very end), I attacked Nightwing with Sabertooth but rolled a 1 for BCF. I ended up losing Sabertooth and Vulture for that stupid act. Although Nightwing lost outwit, Bullseye couldn't hit anybody because Spiral and Nightwing were on the outer edge of the building and both in stealth.

End result...lost the game.

Team 2:

Vet Torch carried Strange on my flank. I spanked Torch w/ Bullseye after outwitting his ES/D. The duo returned to the medic. He came around the same time and I spanked him again. Strange pounded Red Skull who transfered the damage to an Agent, killing him. I pushed Bullseye the following turn to spank Torch again...but failed 2 rolls (needing a 5 or so on each)...1 w/Skull and 1 w/ AIM Agent to finish the job. He flew back to the medic.

Yellowjacket tied up and hit BP for 1. Nightcrawler started his harrassing. The rest of the battle was downhill, although Bullseye w/ and attack of 13 nuked Yellowjacket...and Skull finished the job.

The team picked apart mine the remained of the game.

Team 2 went on to win the tourney by a margin of over 200 points. The good thing...he told me mine was the most challenging one he played against so far with his team.

Lesson learned:

1) Playing for points requires a different strategy (not tactic) than last man standing.

2) In a tourney, don't do things out of frustration...just to speed along the game (as you may do in friendly play)

3) It's possible to play a weenie team and still be a great challenge to other players...it's all in tactics.

4) I'm questioning the benefit of Sabertooth's free move for taking him as my 'brawler.' Since this is a mixed game, I could make some cuts and throw in Bane (although I'd lost outwit). I could also throw in Nightwing and gain Stealth Doombots AND outwit AND 3 natural damage at 8 range.

Two things to note...and I'm seeing more posts about this now...the guy w/ Team 1 took 3rd place...and he was also the judge. Something I'll bring up next time I'm there...assuming it's illegal to do both...

And...as they had prizes left over from lack of attendance last week...I still walked w/ a George Tarleton LE.

Any thoughts?

Here are some things you need on a typical tourney team:
Medic(s)
Outwit
Probability Control
Taxi(s)
Ranged attackers
A brick (like Bane)

Tactics to use:
Kill their Medic(s)
Kill their Taxi(s)
Get to high altitude and snipe off their figures
Use your brick to go BtB with their Stealthed figures

Now... it's not always easy to do all of these things, so you have to give and take to maximize your team to your playing style. I hope this helps.
