Doctor Strange
02/15/2003, 05:22
Imagine a tourney where the prize was nothing less than an entire case of Clobberin time. Well, we had just that last weekend and it was a blast. The idea came from our local Judge, who long ago entered a Mage Knight case tourney and he wanted us to experience that same level of excitement. There were some house rules involved tho. He wanted it to be a knock down, drag out brawl, full of heavy hitters last ditch efforts and no medics!
Here are the rules:
500 point, mixed teams of DC and Marvel
No medics, but you could use named heroes with the support super power. This extended into LEs so while you could use Jean Grey, you could not use the Scientist Supreme
DC team abilities do not function with Marvel Wildcards
No Dupes of named characters. After much thought, this was extended to Doombots as well.
On to the report... The day started out with a quick lunch and some playtesting.
My team:
The "Deathstar" (name given to my team by the judge)
Exp Ultron
Exp Doctor Strange
Vet Bullseye
L.E. Yellojacket (the wildcard)
Rookie Doombot
Exp Vulture
Exp Wasp
Exp Black Cat
Exp Black Panther
Vet SHIELD agent
Vet Pyro
A wildcard team of Defenders, Sinister syndicate, SHIELD and the free moving avengers/brotherhood.
Before I go to the report tho, I want to thank the great opponents I played and I apologize to them if I fail to remember their team correctly.
Game one:
My opponent was using, Vet Ultron, Vet Magneto, Rookie Annihilus, Rookie Klaw, some version of Black panther and Scarlet Witch
This was a rough game right from the start. My opponents Vet Ultron swooped in and delivered a devastating Energy Explosion attack to my tightly clustered team. Massive Damage!! Annihilus and Klaw made a running shot in and delivered some more visceral agony to my team. Ouch! My black panther made a bold move tho and with his help, my Ultron was able to do 5 clix of damage to 4 of his figures thanks to Energy explosion, the Shield team ability and enhancement. Panther outwited his Ultrons Invulnerability, then my Ultron targeted his (Magneto and scarlet witch were all in base contact). Much brutality so quickly into the game. This continued and soon he took out my Ultron. Eventually tho, my Pyro (who was unhurt) was able to clean up after the carnage.
record 1-0-0
Game two:
This was an odd but cool scenario called "skrull infiltrator" Basically, you secretly select one of your figures to be a Skrull infiltrator. The plot is that a Skrull has infiltrated two teams and is secretly making them fight it out. Once either of the Skrulls is KOed, the game is over and the plot is uncovered. Victory points are then calculated as normal.
My opponents team: Vet Nightwing, Nightcrawler, Doctor Strange, Vet Human Torch, Desaad and the Unique cosmic Spidey from infinity challenge.
The game started out on the outdoor park map, the one with no buildings. His Doctor Strange and Human torch made the first attack, but found the Defenders team ability too much to overcome!
(Ultron had a 19, Doc Strange had a 21, Doombot had a 19. They did some damage tho and nightwing was proving to be a thorn. There was a lot of positioning and repositioning, but eventually, my black panther made a gambit. Wasp carried him in and he made a BCF attack on Nightwing--5 damage! He Koed at least 4 of my figures in the process, but no Skrull infiltrator in sight!
My team was being harassed by nightcrawler and I decided to try taking him out. I was able to, again, thanks to Ultron and massive support from SHIELD. But whats that? Nightcrawler was really a SKRULL? After calculating points, I was ahead. Great game!
record: 2-0-0
Game three:
This scenario was kindof like the scientist scenario. A LE was placed in the middle of the map. The LE could be picked up like an object token (only the character does not need to have superstrength) The player controlling the LE at the end keeps the LE.
My opponents team: The Avengers..lead by Exp Captain America, Vet Thor, rookie black panther, Vision, Vet Hercules, Vet Scarlet Witch
The game started on the outdoor map that came with the DC premiere box. I positioned my team on a roof and then Thor made a running shot attack on Bullseye! Roll: snakeyes! Luckily, Scarlet witch was there and changed Thors chances of hitting. What did he roll? Boxcars!! All bullseye could do was fall back with the help of a Yellojacket. My ultron then tried to even the odds a bit. He attacked (boosted by SHIELD) after black panther outwitted Thors invulnerability. DOUBLE SIXES again! What were the odds?! Vision and Hercules then made a run for my black panther, but suprisingly, he was nimble enough to avoid the attacks. Panther eventually did take some damage, but Doctor Stange said a few magic words and healed him to full.
Meanwhile, exp. Captain America and rookie black panther were teaming up on Ultron from the bushes. I didn't want to give up my position so Ultron continued to be hit for 2 clicks each turn. Eventually tho, Ultron and friends were able to hold off the attacks.. his Black panther escaped tho with the LE Madhatter. Ultron was on his last click of health, but he pulled through.

Finals The Deathstar vrs. the Fantastic Four
Lead by: Vet Doctor Doom, Vet invisible woman, Vet Torch, Exp She Hulk, Vet Doombot.
This fight took place on the classic 4 way stop. My ranged team was utterly shut down by my opponents position. Vet Invisible woman was posted on the corner of a roof (on top of an object) so she provided an impenetrable stealth barrier. I was set up on the opposing building with Ultron and Doc Strange at the lead. Doctor Doom saw his great advantage and performed a running shot onto Doctor Strange and amazingly, hit his 21 defense for 4 damage. Human torch quickly taxi-ed Doom back, safely behind Invisible woman. At this point, I was scrambling, trying to find a position to move to another building so that I could invade Invisible womans fortress. I finally had my team in a horrible position and Doom saw an opening. He did a running shot energy explosion and hit at least 5 people on my team... Human torch came along for the ride and he hit for 3. Ouch. I then did a major gambit.
Wasp taxi-ed Vulture out.. Doombot Taxi-ed Bullseye out.
Vulture then taxi-ed bullseye so that both human torch and Doom were based by vulture and Bullseye hit doom (after Black Panther outwitted mastermind. Doom and torch were unable to break away. I then was able to take out Doom. She hulk had meanwhile invaded my base and was reeking havoc. Black panther (my only decent hand to hand fighter) hit her but only rolled one. Eventually, Black cat of all people was able to take out SheHulk. Black Cat used the sinister syndicate ability to gain ultrons attack rating and SHIELD boosted her damage up.
I wasn't able to KO the amazing Vet Invisible woman (who was soaring above some outdoor blocking terrain) but I had enough points to win...
A case!
It was serious fun and I highly suggest trying to do this at your venue. Ask your store owner if he or she would be interested. What we did was calculate how much money a case would be for the owner, divide that much by how many people are entering and that is the entry fee. My main purpose in writing this report is to promote events of this nature.
It's very doable and the event itself will draw out a ton of people for an exciting and huge tourney.
One more thing: A big thanks goes out to Stimpy!
