View Full Version : Running shot and shield/hydra team abilities

Hey,

Does running shot work with either part of the shield team ability? What about the hydra team? (Can Captain America use running shot, move up to friendly shield characters and get either +3 to damage or range?)

Why or Why not?

Thanks!

All of those TAs require that the character hoping to benefit from the TA be adjacent at the time of the attack. This means that if you use Running Shot, you do need to end the move portion adjacent to the HYDRA/SHIELD characters.

Also, the damage boost from SHIELD is a power action, and you can't give a carried character a non-free action. While this isn't a big deal with Cap, if you've got a Running Shot character capable of Carrying other characters, you can not carry the SHIELD character if you want to increase damage. HYDRA and the range boost from SHIELD are not power actions (HYDRA isn't any action at all and the SHIELD range boost is a free action), so you could use them after the character is carried.

Does this help?

Okay, but what if the three shield guys are already at a spot at the beginning of the turn, (they have not been carried)and another character uses running shot to get beside them and shoot. Do I get to give them power actions in the middle of the running shot attack to grant the running shooter a +3 bonus to damage?

Why wouldn't you be able to do so? That's exactly the way that SHIELD works: you give them a power action in the middle of another character's ranged combat attack.

Is there something about the SHIELD description that is causing you to ask this question? Otherwise, I guess I am not quite sure why that particular scenario described is causing concern.

I was not sure if there was some sort of rule about the order of actions, or not giving power actions in the middle of other power actions.

or not giving power actions in the middle of other power actions.

In general, this is true; you can't give one action in the middle of another... unless you are specifically told that you can. Case in point:

S.H.I.E.L.D.™ When a friendly character makes a ranged combat attack, you can give any number of friendly characters adjacent to the attacker and using the S.H.I.E.L.D. team ability either a free action or a power action (but not both) before making the attack roll: For each character given a free action, modify the attacker’s range by +1; for each character given a power action, modify the attacker’s damage value by +1.

If a character is attacking, then it must have been given an action (attacks don't just happen). The wording of the SHIELD TA allows you to violate the "no action in the middle of another action" thing during a very specific circumstance.

Normally, you could not give a figure an action during another figure's action. However, the SHIELD TA is one exception to that. In order to use it, another figure (A) must have been given an action that results in A being adjacent to the Shield figure and that A is makes a ranged combat attack.

After reading the exact way shield TA is worded it brought up a bit of confusion on my part. How can you benefit from the range boost?

If I have a character with 4 range and am adjacent to 3 shield members and want to attack a character 7 squares away I would first have to make a ranged combat attack then give a free action to the 3 shield characters to increase my range to the required 7. My question is how did I manage to make the ranged combat attack in the first place since I was targeting a character I couldn't reach? Would that not make my original attack an invalid action?

I don't have a printed rulebook and could probably have figured this out on my own if I did. So if you could also direct me to somewhere I can find the rules online that would be great too.

Thanks

All rules documentation is availible as PDFs in the Units section.
Ranged Combat
Ranged combat represents ranged attacks, such as thrown bombs, repulsor rays, machine guns, energy blasts, and psionic attacks.
Every character has a range value printed on its base. This is the maximum number of squares that a character’s ranged combat attack can reach. If the range value is greater than 0 and your character is not adjacent to an opposing character, then your character can make a ranged combat attack. A character can attack in any direction, regardless of the direction it is facing.
The bolded sentence is the important one... you don't really need to have an enemy within range to make a ranged combat attack. There's just no point to make a ranged combat attack if there is no enemy that can be hit by that attack.

Im not going to claim to be rulez expert, but the real key for me is the explanation of running shot giving a range combat action as a free action at the end of your replaced speed of half, and the shield team ability refers to anybody using a ranged combat action just before they role dice. So i would say yes easy as pie, plus 3 range and they burn up power actions to add 3 damage and capt gets to be a high damage sheild throwing machine... (I think i want to make a shield ad cap team now and give it a try)

It's actually during a ranged combat ATTACK, so the attack doesn't need to be from a ranged combat ACTION.

I just want to clarify that you cannot have one SHIELD guy give both the range and damage boost on the same action.

Okay thanks for clarifying! i actually meant what you said in your first paragraph, but i missed the but not both part of sheild team ability. So i am really happy you cleared that up for me. :)

Thanks Quebbster I knew it worked but just didn't know exactly how and now that I know I plan on making a bunch of ointless attacks just to see how many times I can critically hit the ground beneath my feet.
