The search for Ray Palmer is over. He’s in the DC HeroClix Blackest Night Starter Game!

The Atom
A stalwart member of the Justice League, Ray Palmer’s life was torn apart when he discovered that his love Jean Loring was a murderer. Even after taking a pilgrimage into the multiverse in search of a new purpose, the Atom found he still felt empathy for Loring and all those who had brought evil upon the innocent. In the rise of the Blackest Night, the Atom’s rare compassion allowed him to join the Indigo Tribe and wield the power of their light.
The DC HeroClix Blackest Night Starter Game will be in comic and hobby stores on May 12, 2010. The Starter Game includes everything you need to play HeroClix: seven HeroClix figures, the 2010 HeroClix Rulebook, a map (The Oan Sciencells) and more – reserve your copy at your local retailer!
Check back this week on www.wizkidsgames.com (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/) for more Blackest Night Starter Game and DC HeroClix The Brave and The Bold previews!

uhhhh I Don't think Ray's yet Small (The Solid color) to justify using that type of sculpt...maybe if they made him about the size from Origins instead of Power pack size

I like it, but it seems to lack the dynamic pose that the other ones possess (except maybe for Luthor). I think it would have looked better if each of the three bodies had possessed slightly different poses, suggesting him jumping or some other kind of movement as he shrinks.

As is, it reminds me of the Origins Shazam! sculpt. But it could translate well into actual physical piece and completely prove me wrong. I hope so.

That starter has what I think may well be the most beautiful HC figure ever done so far. makes me eager to see how it will translate in figs for the after BatB expansion.

Me likey the sculpt. When I first saw it, I thought the staff was a hockey stick, and that made me think of Casey Jones from TMNT. I am definitely fielding this figure.

Very similar to the Origins Shazam pose, but that's not a bad thing. I don't expect him to be a flier, and I'll be surprised if he is. I can see him having a Defend or Support-type power.

It's a good sculpt, it's just the proportions are off a little.

ChiRocker
02/08/2010, 09:30
If they had made him any smaller, the Tribal detail would be lost. I think this is my least favorite of the sculpts, but that didn't me from being super excited. I think that if they all translate 99.99%, this will be the coolest set of figures ever produced.

02/08/2010, 09:30
Believe it or not but that "changing size" effect is almost exactly what I was hoping for.Except I was "seeing" only two but three Atoms is even better.
Cool stuff! Congrats!

02/08/2010, 09:38
I like this sculpt. The staff looks less like a hockey stick from the side. If you are going to do a traditional Atom pose this is it. I'm looking forward to this starter and it's great sculpts but...
My Atom pet peeve: This has nothing to do with clix at all, but I hate when the Atom is just chilling and is all 2 inches tall. Why? In Blackest Night #1, he's calling Carter and he's using a regular phone at a regular desk but he's tiny. I hate that. Don't get me started on the little floating chair.

02/08/2010, 09:57
It's an ok sculpt...but I would have rather seen Ray Palmer in action leaping over a zombie's head holding out the staff as it was blasting forward, or something to that effect.

Hero_guy
02/08/2010, 10:13
This sculpt looks great from the front. It looks like they took him off a comic panel. When you start turning it though, the multiple 'figs' on the dial look a little weird to me. I mean he doesn't magically move forward when he starts to shrink right? I understand why they chose to do that in this sculpt, but why not just have one sculpt overlap the other instead? Ok, my idea with this pose would mean that some parts, like the head, would be completely swallowed by the torso of the next size up, but to remedy that, you could have him in an action pose. He's been drawn plenty of times jumping while shrinking right? Do that! Still, I'm excited about this starter. They are all a visual treat. I just hope that their dials will live up to their sculpt awesomeness.

??? When did Apache Chief and Curly Howard join the Indigo Tribe? I KEED! I KEED! jk :p
I like the sculpt. It's THE classic Atom(Ray Palmer) pose minus the atom bands swirling around him. Plus, he's in an outfit that closely resembles his "Sword of the Atom" days! this starter set is really looking great! And it's really nice of NECA to give us previews for a starter set so many months in advance with so much info! It's also a great way to get early feedback for any changes they might need to make so SMART move on their part!! :classic:

you know i had assumed that was the case...so i really sat there for like 5-10 minutes studying the detail (well as much as i could..of a 2d picture of a 3d sculpt), just to be sure it wasn't my eyes that were off. i generally really like Ben's sculpts (even though sometimes there's something just a little "off" from the digital sculpts...which i, at least for now, attribute to my eye's newness to the process or just to how the digital displays. i haven't yet had the chance to see a finished version of a digital sculpt so i have no way to yet judge any difference) but this one for some reason just sets me off...while i've been very vocal at my disinterest in the chosen characters, i've mostly really liked the sculpts previewed so far (blue flash seems a bit too thin, but it doesn't overly bother me)

The other four are just so amazing that this one is not just there for me. I am going to put this one at the bottom of the five. Far better that he B&B sculpts I have seen so far but just not as good as the previous four.

Great concept though and I am hoping that it translates better in hand.

the thing in his hand looks like a hockey stick, least favorite of what i've seen so far that was my first thought, why is he holding a hockey stick? :p i like it, i get they're trying to simulate the shrinking with the multiple sculpts but like others said would work better if he was jumping or if they put one sculpt inside of the other.

This was my first thought as well.

As for the sculpt I like the effect very much.

These first 6 sculpts from Neca(from scratch) and Jasons comments about working with the factories(specifically the eyes!) have me very excited from this point on.

While I'm excited about TB&TB for new dials I actually have very low expectations for it..........hoping for a few gems though!

I cant wait to see what Neca does with the next regular Marvel set after seeing how amazing they are doing with this starter!! I once doubted Heroclix would ever return and now i believe we are headed into a new golden age of clix!

Thunderclese
02/08/2010, 11:39
The small sculpt doesn't seem to have alot of detail. Maybe the whole thing will be scaled down when it's actually produced so that the largest version is normal human size and the painted one is smaller than average.

First thing that came to mind was WHOA.

Then...is that a hockey stick?

Then...what the hell did they do to his costume?

Then...still cool tho....great sculpt considering the character.

Ted_Kord
02/08/2010, 12:50
I really like the sculpt conceptually, but I also hate what DC did with the costume. Yeah, I know, it's a bit of a throwback to his "Sword of the Atom" days, and all indigo lanterns have that sort of tribal look to them. That doesn't mean it's not just a tad ridiculous, though.

Still, character design aside, the sculpt is very good in my opinion and I love their use of the shrinking effect! If only we could have had it on a traditional Atom figure instead.

Digital renders...meh. Its like running out to buy a new model car without even seeing an actual photo of a real vehicle. I agree that these little computer drawings look incredible, but in this case, seeing is NOT believing.

Once real world, painted sculpts are on hand for viewing, then and only then, will I get excited. Chinese-slave labor, slop painters overpower digital renderings every time!

I'm thinking the compassion ring probably didn't read "Justice League: A Cry for Justice", where the Atom has been torturing supervillains, or the recent "Brave & the Bold", where he was very reluctant to save the Joker.

Ring: "Ray Palmer, you have the ability to feel great compassion."

Atom: "Really? Even after..."

Ring: "Even after what?"

Atom: "Never mind. Compassion? I can do that."

I am surprised to read the amount of negativity regarding this sculpt.

This sculpt seems pretty cool to me. NECA has done a great job utilizing the translucent plastic colors.

The Atom definitely remind me of Captain Marvel, which I like.

I am very curious on the powers for Atom. The Indigo color at times seems to be the most powerful. They seem to know more about the emotional light powers than other lanterns. Hopefully this translates into a little outwit for Atom.
I am hoping that when this entire team is fielded they play well together as a team and compliment each other well.

I don't like this one, but I applaud the attempt at making an interesting sculpt.

Agreed.

Much like Fantastic Forces Nightcrawler and Origin Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!) the attempt at a creative experiment was undertaken. And just like them, for me it is unsuccessful but I, too, applaud the attempt.

In the end, standing still always looks bad when you are implying motion. Make Atom diving forward getting progressively smaller and its great. But the static pose, especially the familiar raging against humanity pose (for him a goalie mayhaps?) just visually looks odd.

This means, however 2 things:
1. Possible sculpt switch with Origins Atom.

2. WONDER WOMAN IS NEXT!!!

Technically, all of them don't get along with each other. Blue Lanterns GREATLY increase the power of a Green Lantern but, at the same time, they GREATLY drain the power of a Sinestro Corps Lantern. Blue Lanterns may also reverse the effects of someone who has become a Red Lantern. They may also heal someone who has been attacked by the Red Lanterns plasma spew. Orange Lanterns shouldn't play well with anyone because they want everything and are extremely selfish.
I'm not saying I'm not enjoying Blackest Night, just that some of the corps just don't mesh well together UNLESS, they are all combining they're power to form the original white light of creation. :classic:
