View Full Version : Quick question about the Kinetic Accelerator
I was just talking about it in another thread, and this was brought to my attention, so I just wanted to be sure that I was reading it the right way. From the newest Players Guide:
KINETIC ACCELERATOR
If a character is given an action that would require them to replace their speed value (e.g., Charge or Running Shot) while they occupy the same square as the Kinetic Accelerator, both replacements occur at the same time and therefore the active player can choose which effect goes first. If the roll makes is so that the given action cannot be performed, the character is assigned a token for the action and not moved.
So basically, if I am reading it right, if you roll a 6 on the KA, you can:
Declare your Charge halved Movement (say with Ulik a 10 halved to 5) and then add the +6 to the movement for a Charge Movement of 11, and if you have Lunge, then Lunge for a further 2 for a total 'Charge' Movement of 13. Is that correct? If that's the correct, it makes the KA even better, and it was already one of my favorite objects.
Wow. We've never played it that way. We've always rolled for the KA first, added that # to the printed Movement, and then halved the Movement.

Hmmm.... never noticed this entry in the players guide... of course I haven't really taken the time to look lately. I don't see why they would do this though, this is kinda imba. Having someone get +6 to their movement was good enough. We don't need someone effectively getting +12 to their speed value when making charges or running shots.

wow. This looks amazing and troubling. I dub Kinetic Accelerator officially on every team. Can't wait to see if this is "official".

Yup. They are two replacement values.....and you can choose which one to do first.
Here is Nbperp mentioning it. (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=246272&highlight=Kinetic+Accelerator)

Ever since that ruling was made, I've been seeing the Kinetic Accelerator on almost every week.

Just curious. Does the rule of 3 not apply to the kinetic accelerator roll, then? If it doesn't, I could see how you half the movement/charge and add your roll, but I guess I thought that since the roll is a replacement value, that it can only get modified no higher than 3? Which is correct?

No, the 'rule of 3' is not applicable. The KA produces a "replacement value" not a modifier.
Just remember that the KA is a double edged sword.
If you are standing on it, using it for cover, and perform ANY power action, then you make the roll.
So, say that Winter Soldier is hiding on it when he uses RCE. He will roll and possibly remove his cover.

That's going to make rules questions about Cuckoos kinda awkward.

And I'm putting you on notice because you put them on notice which thereby causes others to notice the talk about that which should not be noticed.....
Thanks for the clarification guys.
Good thing it goes away on a roll of 5-6.

Just so I'm clear...
I can either add the KA roll to my unmodified speed value THEN halve it
OR
I can halve it FIRST then add the KA roll?
IMHO, most players would go for the 2nd option:
Charge of 8 with an addition of the KA roll of 6 turns out to be a Charge of 7 (8+6)/2
VERSUS
Charge of 8 halved to 4 then adding the KA roll of 6 turns out to be a Charge of 10 (8/2)+6
Is that the gist?

Correct. The active player can choose the order in which the combat value is replaced.

Follow-up question of sorts:
If you give someone Swingline, it makes their speed value +1. When does the +1 kick in?
For example, say a character with an odd number printed speed value, say 7, is going to charge or running shot from the KA. If the +1 from swingline is constant, the character has an 8 speed, halved to 4 then + whatever with the KA. If I can choose when to add the +1, I can halve my 7 speed to 3.5, rounded up to 4, then +1 so then it's 5 + whatever I roll for the KA.

This is actually a good question. When does the Swingline bonus activate? Is it a constant modification, or does it only come into play when you actual take the action? Would it work like a Perplex mod and get essentially overwritten by the Kinetic Accel. replacement, or would it occur later and fall under the "replace, then modify" rule of thumb?

It is used when the character is given an action that may result in movement
it would fall under the replace and modify rule.
With feats though they are applied at the start of the action so it's almost like perplex.

Page 20:
Feats that modify a character’s combat values modify those values only when the character is using the feat. If a feat modifies a character’s speed value or range value, apply any modifications to those combat values immediately before giving the action to use the feat.
In the case above, the 7 becomes an 8 before any other modifiers/replacements.
