A while ago we had another musical showdown that featured songs with the same name but different writers/performers. They were one-offs and not done in conjunction with the Rock Wars. Please listen to all the songs, even the ones that you haven't necessarily heard before and then pick your favorites. Some songs may only have two competitors and some may have as many as four or five or even six. I'll try to weed out the pretenders from the contenders.

Our 36th match-up is CRASH

As usual, there are a lot of songs on this one, but this will make for a nice time killer while you're working or blogging or whatever it is you do. Just sit back and listen. Give each song a chance, then decide.

The last match-up featured the song Heroes. David Bowie got all but one first place vote. The rest of the songs seemed to be mired in mediocrity as none of them seemed to even want to be the second best song.

there were 5 notable acts left off this thread so that we could keep it at 7 acts.

In the immortal words of DTM - "So what say you all." Who will be the winner in this latest match-up of Same Name/Different Song? Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite as there'll be a points system to decide winners & losers. Also, if you like, put in comments about the songs - good or bad, it's all cool.

As always, if you have suggestions for future match-ups please list those in your reply.

1. The Primitives - A great 80's pop song. I had totally forgotten about this track and got really excited when it came to the chorus.

2. Velvet Underground - Really this is only A VU album in name, but I am still surprised that even a kinda-Velvets song came up in one of these and I am not putting it at number one. Though this is still a fun little track.

3. Lunachicks - I wouldn't listen to this again on purpose, but I didn't mind two thirds of it.

4. Feeder - There are a billion bands that sound like this. It's fine for a local open mic night, but not something anyone is going to get excited about.

5. Flesh For Lulu - I just listened to it and when I went to comment on it I couldn't even vaguely remember it. Even now 2 seconds after jogging my memory, I have already forgotten how it goes.

6. Methods of Mayhem - This song was kind of silly, like what an 8 year old might sing if he was transported into the body of a rocker.

7. 12 Stones - I love Pearl Jam, but I hate Eddie for spawning so many of these horrible bands. The only good thing I can say about this is that it isn't Creed.

Let's rank 'em!

Primitives (Kind of knew that this would be number one. Oh, Primitives - how many mixtapes of mine did you anchor? From "Summer Rain" to the Lush-anticipating "Sick of It" to the pleasantly floaty "Secrets," they always provided just the right tune to segue from some oddball Donovan song to whatever 4AD band I was infatuated with that week. I have to find my copy of Pure and listen to it in the immediate future.)

Flesh for Lulu (Ah, it's Modern English the next generation! Both bands were shoegaze/goth rockers who hit it big with *totally* atypical songs that consigned them to the ranks of the great one-hit wonders of the '80s. But, since this isn't "I Go Crazy," I'll note that I'm kind of hung up on how much this sounds like it could be a forgotten Charlatans B-side.)

Velvet Underground (I find that I must now listen to "Brand New Key (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIFknAdVvNM).")

Lunachicks (I appreciate noisy women.)

Feeder (Do it the '90s!)

Methods of Mayhem (Wow. That certainly was from a video game.)

12 Stones (Damn! I was certain that it was going to "rawk out!" at exactly the one-minute mark. Off by ten seconds. Guess I have to reset my "predicting tempo changes in derivative corporate rock" meter.)

Yes, but have you ever listened to this version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-dmSr7ygKg) I don't know what it is about her, but I love Yellow Thunder Woman and I love Ukulele orchestras. Put them both together and WOW!

I had a big smile on mt face as I read this because I had the same thought in my head. How many mix tapes of mine had this song and Stop Killing Me. I don't have the albums anymore but Pure had a cover of the VU's I'll Be Your Mirror that also made it onto a lot of my mix tapes.

Primitives - this is what they mean when you hear someone talk about a finely crafted pop melody with a catchy sing-along hook. Great songwriting and execution of same.
Velvet Underground - What can I say? It's the VU at their poppiest best and has a hint of Paul McCartney circa 66-68.
Lunachicks - Chicks who can rock like this are badasses in my book.
Feeder - too cliche, like a bad ripoff of 60s Psychedelia by an American garage band.
Flesh for Lulu - I'd forgotten all about these guys and this song isn't bad but certainly not memorable and I'll forget about....hmmmm what were we talking about?
12 Stones - another song that's too cliche, but they are one of our acts so that keeps them out of the cellar.
Methods of Mayhem - okay, not being the worst song kept 12 Stones out of the cellar. The song starts off with this cool riff and then goes into suck mode.

Oh! My favorite segue! Summer Rain to They Eat Their Own's "Like a Drug," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJc7F3vhx4U) which then flowed into Siouxsie's version of "Trust in Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSsncQUH9Jc) from The Jungle Book.

I have a Word document that has traveled across something like six hard drives that documents all the mixtapes I ever made for one particular friend (we dated in college, but we're both happily married to other folks now, and our spouses totally dig each other). There are maybe 40 playlists on there, and I actually started keeping the list to ensure that there wouldn't be any duplication of content. I remember marking the point where I switched from tape to CD, and I do think a little bit of artistry died then. It's simply a lot easier to drag files into a burning program, knowing that they'll all fit. On tape, you had to know the running time of each song, to ensure that you'd have enough room to fit everything, but you didn't want to leave too much silence at the end. You also wanted to be sure to close each side appropriately. And the manual fading from one track to the next. You kids these days with your iTunes! Cheating, I say! If I really had a crush on someone, I'd mix a tape in the practice studio of the campus radio station (which actually broadcast on a cable signal, so some folks might have heard me at work) so it would have that professional edge to it. They also had better turntables than I did. And I'm now realizing that was almost 20 years ago. That settles it. This weekend, I'm making a mixtape (or playlist - might as well get with the times) for the kid. Can't get him started on good music too early.

1) The Primitives.

2) Flesh for Lulu. Okay, those are the two that I actually liked.

3) 12 Stones

4) Lunachicks

5) Methods of Mayhem

6) Feeder. These four are nothing special, but they are all okay. Good for background music, but I wouldn't want these filling my ears in a car for very long.

7) Velvet Underground. Not a fan. Never have been.

1. 12 Stones (A decent enough rock song)
2. Feeder (A so so song really)
3. Flesh for Lulu (Another OK-ish tune)
4. Velvet Underground (It was OK......kinda)
5. The Primitives (Nothing special, but not horrible)
6. Lunachicks (Nah, not my thing)
7. Methods of Mayhem (Definately not my thing)

Crash

1. The Primitives - I dig. I like a song thats bippy and boppy. And this song has both: bip and bop. I love female vocals like these: seemingly effortless.

2. Lunachicks - I like it. Can't justify it... just like it. I dig the sludgy-bluesy riff that segues into that Pixies-ish pre-chorus before that really obnoxious punk chorus. Ain't nothing wrong with the Riot Grrrl movement in my mind!

3. Feeder - It was pretty generic, but I didn't find it unenjoyable. Not so sure I thought the lyrics were so good. Although I like hearing people yell "I don't think so" really loudly.

4. Velvet Underground - Well... sounds like some McCartney channelling took place. I liked this song. It sure was short.

5. Flesh for Lulu - It's okay. I can't really find any words to describe my feelings toward this song. I just think it's okay at best.

6. Methods of Mayhem - Whenever I hear this band, I can't help but think "Tommy Lee is kind of a nerd." I hated the song. A lot.

7. 12 Stones - I hate you for making me listen to this. I'm starting to think that every band in this heavy alternative genre writes exactly the same song over and over again.
