Two defenders adjacent, A has 18, B has 16 with energy shield deflection. Can B use the defenders team ability and have 18 for defence AND use the energy shield giving him a defence of 20 against ranged attacks?

Yes, and the same is true of the Defend super power.

The number itself transfers, any powers that are on the recieving characters defense slot are applied to that number.
