A while ago we had another musical showdown that featured songs with the same name but different writers/performers. They were one-offs and not done in conjunction with the Rock Wars. Please listen to all the songs, even the ones that you haven't necessarily heard before and then pick your favorites. Some songs may only have two competitors and some may have as many as four or five or six or even seven max. I'll try to weed out the pretenders from the contenders.

Our 42nd match-up is Close My Eyes (incl. Close My Eyes Forever)

As usual, there are a lot of songs on this one, but this will make for a nice time killer while you're working or blogging or whatever it is you do. Just sit back and listen. Give each song a chance, then decide.

The last match-up featured the song Get it On and was topped by T. Rex and Marvin Gaye. Everyone pretty much agreed, Diffuser sucked.

In the immortal words of DTM - "So what say you all." Who will be the winner in this latest match-up of Same Name/Different Song? Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite as there'll be a points system to decide winners & losers. Also, if you like, put in comments about the songs - good or bad, it's all cool.

As always, if you have suggestions for future match-ups please list those in your reply.

1. Mariah Carey - I totally shocked myself to discover I liked this best. I had never even attempted to pay any attention to her music before.

2. Arthur Russell

3. Manic Street Preachers

4. Lita Ford

5. The Open

6. The Churchills

7. Pain

Nothing too bad overall.

Let's rank 'em!

Lita Ford (Because Ozzy commands it!)

Arthur Russell (Taken too soon, but the man did one hell of a lot of living in the time he had.)

The Churchills (Okay, full disclosure - I am actually wearing a Churchills T-shirt at this very moment. My wife worked with them a few years ago, and they were total sweethearts. They hooked her up with a shirt, and that shirt became mine, primarily because I can pull off yellow better than she can. Why Weezer could build an entire career being the whiny version of Teenage Fanclub and these guys never took off is a mystery to me.)

The Open (Huh. So that's what the Jam would have sounded like with Robin Guthrie on guitar. When choosing one's influences, there are certainly worse places to start.)

Manic Street Preachers (Interesting - I don't remember these guys having this much of an edge.)

Pain (And the Truth in Advertising award goes to this band. Hey, at least I knew what I was in for when I clicked the link.)

Mariah Carey (Boring in all five octaves.)

Arthur Russel - To be honest after listening to the first six tracks I was pretty much ready to give the number one spot to just about anything else. So it was awesome to find this fun little folk number.

Lita Ford - I am a sucker for this cheeseball duet. This is a perfect background song for a melodramatic 80's movie scene in the rain and I love that kind of junk. Though it is better in a 30 second sized movie clip form, it gets pretty tiresome by the end.

The Open - Another mediocre track in a mediocre list. I didn't mind it but I won't remember having listening to it in 30 minutes.

Manic Street Preachers - I never cared for this band and this song doesn't change my mind. They always are so close to being good, but they rarely get over that hump.

The Churchills - An okay song, nothing special or memorable. Some guys play instruments and sing and really do nothing much beyond that.

Mariah Carey - This made me uncomfortable like how I imagine someone would feel if they were at a friends house and the friend had their child sing a song for everyone. the song didn't go anywhere and the singing was awful, I just wanted to find an excuse to leave the room. The weird thing is I don't always hate her stuff, she is usually a bit more palatable than most of her contemporaries.

Pain - Yuck. I try to find something to like in every genre, but I have yet to find anything I can stand in the world of electro-shout-metal or whatever you call this. Actually I don't hate that After The Flesh song that was in THe Crow, so I guess I don't mind one song. But either way, I can't stand this.

Strange how this SNDS grouping seems to be all over the table, but lets start with

Lita Ford - I've always loved this song. I met Lita backstage at a concert in West Palm Beach, and told her about a picture she signed for me. She write To Tim, Love Lita. I asked if she still felt the same way. She laughed, but Chris Impelliteri from W.A.S.P. didn't. Who knew they were dating :nervous:?
Arthur Russell - what an excellent surprise this was. I've never heard of him, but feel like I got a good soul cleansing with this. The solo strumming, and melody might have been enough, but then you get hit by the lyrics. Number two in a surprisingly strong field.
The Open - Cool jangly guitar work and the songwriting skills were pretty good. At times they reminded me of English Beat/General Public minus the ska. On second listen I hear what hail's saying about Robin Guthrie.
The Churchills - Cleverly crafted pop tune reminiscent of The Gin Blossoms and the Posies back in their hey day. These top 4 songs on any other day may have been flip-flopped.
Manic Street Preachers - nice use of guitar effects pedal, decent songwriting, but really nothing spectacular.
Pain - Sometimes you want something hard and heavy to rock out to...this wasn't it. I cjust couldn't see myself headbanging to this in the car on the drive home.
Mariah Carey - what can be said that wasn't said already...The finger snapping was excellent :tired:

Sometimes things are just meant to be. Close My Eyes wasn't supposed to be the match-up, but when I looked for songs to use for the title that was submitted, I found nothing good, but instead I saw there were a bunch of songs listed for Close My Eyes and decided to go with that instead. Oh, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult is about a million light years away from Pain. They're primarily an industrial dance band in the classic Wax Trax model - they got a bit harder as time went on, but they always put on one hell of a live show. Some of their other tracks:

Kooler than Jesus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC-SeW7hScU)
Devil Bunnies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr1lu3Bh57Y)
A Daisy Chain for Satan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN0yI-ambNY)
Sex on Wheelz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmKntdIrDyE)

The late '80s and early '90s industrial scene in Chicago was a freaking hoot.

I gave them a listen and I see what you mean, they are a lot more dance -pop than I thought. A bit like a happier Pretty Hate Machine era NIN, more of a Pretty slightly dislike Machine if you will.

This is actually pretty cool stuff, thanks for the heads up.

1. Lita Ford (Easily the best here, but no love for Ozzy in the title?)
2. Arthur Russell (A nice song)
3. Mariah Carey (It was an OK song, not great, but not horrible either)
4. The Churchills (Another OK enough song)
5. Manic Street Preachers (Yet again, another just OK tune)
6. The Open (Yep, another OK song)
7. Pain (OK, a less than average song, finally)

Close My Eyes

1 - Manic Street Preachers - I like the mix of modern and retro sounds. I think the vocals need more reverb and distortion... haha, just kidding. I really like this. Its got an original sound and sounds like there is no sacrifice of artistic integrity. I like when a band gets to do just what they want.

2 - The Churchills - This sounds like stuff we've all heard before. I'm not ashamed to admit that I didn't find it terrible. It reminded me of a culmination of things prior that I really enjoy: The Beatles and Self (anyone remember Self? They were amazing!). There are some nice harmonies here, the lyrics aren't too power-pop stupid, and they aren't completely talentless. Biggest flaw: the melody was pretty similar to the faux Wonders' "That Thing You Do." haha

3 - Arthur Russell - The song was nice, but forgettable. All in all, however, I rank it relatively high because I enjoy the sound of it. I'm a fan of acoustic folk. I dig me some Nick Drake and Jim Croce. I even enjoy me some John Denver here and there. Guess I just like dead guys' songs.

4 - The Open - Joe Strummer is rolling over in his grave. While there is no comparison here between these kids and The Clash, the influence is undeniably heard here in the riffs and vocals - structure and song not so much. I don't find this terrible, but just a little generic and obvious. This band probably could do better, but this wasn't an utter waste of time. I will, however, go listen to London Calling after I finish ranking this SNDS!

5 - Pain - Here's another one that I didn't find that bad, but I don't think I could find myself wanting to listen to it all that much. When I hear this type of music, I think of four types of people: rebellious teens with awful fashion sense, drunken rednecks, pseudo-goths, and aging, violent metal-heads that find everything with distortion "badass." This kind of music is interesting because it is an evolution and de-evolution of sound all that the same time. This song is good, but is nowhere near great by any standards - but that doesn't stop the fact that there is no accounting for tastes.

6 - Mariah Carey - The song was good enough for modern era R&B. I started to zone out with a lot of the "doo doos" and "dadas". I would call this better background music than listening selection.

7 - Lita Ford (w/ Ozzy Osbourne) - I don't think that "Close My Eyes Forever" and "Close My Eyes" should be classified together. The songs have very different names. That being said, I think Lita Ford has always stunk. The fact that she's hot has always been her selling point. Ozzy is the best thing about this song. He has a one-of-a-kind voice which is what is great about his involvement here. This song isn't terrible, but I'm dropping it to the bottom because of the name difference.
