View Full Version : Reduced to mod fodder... it's kinda sad.

I was thinking yesterday and decided to go through my clix. I realized that with all the power creep lately there were figures I simply won't use anymore. At one time I'd have kept a few for campaigns or something, but since avengers they don't have REV's anymore, and with keywords, team symbols don't matter as much for theme team building.
I don't have a huge collection, somewhere around 1,000. Going through my cases last night I picked out 35 figures that I would never use, have no trade value other than mod fodder, and aren't really pretty or important enough to display. Thankfully none of these were figures I'd sought after in the past, but it still kinda of sucks to realize that they're essentially worthless. There are definitely many others suffering from the whole power creep thing but they at least have some redeeming quality or strength that made me keep them.
And before long I'll probably be doing this again, as there were about 30 or so more that barely made the cut, including some that only made it because they were uniques or haven't been remade.
PS: I put this here because this is sort of about trading, and I don't really want another complaint thread headlining the main page. With a new set coming out, I'd rather see a positive attitude on the main page. (At least until you read into the comments)

I can feel where you're coming from. I was going through my dupes recently and came across the same realization. It seems as if you aren't trading SRs nowadays, you might as well not even bother.
I am considering just making a Take What You Want If You Pay Shipping thread. I just sent a bunch of figs to a player in Canada for just such a reason.
I hear you guys. Right around the release of Crisis, I started to think the same thing. I had a huge collection at the time, around 2,000 figures give or take. With the 'power creep' and advent of SP, I figured the 'old' figures were totally obsolete.
Then I took all of my figures pre-Avengers and sold them off. I felt *relieved* to be rid of them. Less clutter, no *useless* figures etc. Then I started to build teams, and I realized that I needed a lot of the figures I'd sold off to make said teams. With the removal of REVs, you want to build an Avengers team? You've got 27 points left, and don't want to fill it with feats? Ahhhhhh E Mockingbird fits the bill perfectly.......if you have her.
Anyway, in the end, I bought back (almost) all of the figures I sold off to begin with. This time around I've kept figures with keywords, and most of the good Vets. My advice would be to think about it long and hard before you get rid of them.
I too have recently (in the last 4 months) just given away over 1,000 dupe figures. About 700-800 to my buddy who had to sell off his collection for financial reasons, 300 or so to a fellow Realmser (for the cost of shipping), about 200-300 to my neighbors (whom became interested after seeing my collection at Christmas time), all of my extra maps (23 of them) again to a fellow Realmser for the cost of shipping, and most recently the Anti-Monitor (I had 4 of them) to a fellow Realmser for the cost of shipping. Unless you have high end SR, Uniques, LEs or Chases, no one seems to really care/want them.
For the BaTB (from what I've seen so far) it looks like I may save my money, and just get the few pieces I want, and save my money for the Watchmen set and possibly the Chases.

The key for me is that I'm only looking at getting rid of my dupes. I'm way too OCD to get rid of all my clix that I've worked so hard to complete my sets.

I am in very much agreement with you here. I really don't care for duos so that should be a good monetary savings right there. I'm going strictly through the secondary market this time. I did that before with AA and it really saved me some money. HoT killed my plans because it had been so long for new clix and the fact that I love the Asgardian characters.

I don't think it's always power creep that makes pieces worthless. Just the other day I was pulling out some REV sets from Armor Wars and looking at the dials and thinking how awful some pieces are, and relizing many were never good in the first place.

Agreed. There are many figures that were never worth playing, and a sizeable number that became obsolete more due to rules changes than power creep (such as CT Hawkeye with multiple targets, RCE, and zero damage).

@Milo Garret: They're in the trade thread in my sig.
Yeah a lot of these are figs that weren't good even when they came out. Now they're just worse. Some have been remade though. I guess I get to wait on more remakes.
I definitely still have enough, including cheap filler pieces, to build just about any team. This was mostly stuff that, as stated, was pretty much useless in every way.
What troubles me is I've got at least another 30 that I barely decided to keep, and these are just figs I view as unplayable. There are numerous others that are just outclassed in todays game, they aren't horrible but they just don't hold up against the new stuff.

Next week we're running a "comic accurate team swap" tournament.
You better believe that I'm scouring my old Cosmic Justice and Infinity Challenge figures for this. 400 points! It's actually quite hard.
