View Full Version : Common Question: Game or Play?

With the game as strong as its ever been (based on the bright future of this year), I just wanted to check in with the good people of the community to see how people approach the game these days.

Do you primarily:

Game - Thrive on the strategy and the competition

or

Play - Revel in the comic characters playing out battles from your imagination

I certainly enjoy both, and I hope this poll/question comes off as judgment-free, since I think this game needs all kinds of people buying it, regardless of their primary motivation.

If you want to talk about your favorite tactic or character, or whatever it is that you enjoy most from either aspect of the game, please share!

Holy #### I was the first to vote.

While I love the game of it, and I'm a big board game guy in general, I'm huge on comics and having my tiny Captain America beat the #### out of other people makes me squeal in joy.

I'd have to say 'game', but it's really both.

Wait, C to the Rap is still word-filtered?

I love the play aspect more. I love building cool 'comic accurate' teams, even if they aren't that competitive. Right now I'm putting together an X-Men team from when Magneto was leading the X-Men in the 80's. Lots of modding involved. Magneto in his pink suit!

It's all about the role play for me. I pretty much only use people I know and care about (besides generics).

I actually played Mage Knight before Heroclix came out, so I can't really say the gameplay isn't part of what attracts me, but the comic part is definitely more important.

Primarily, I put myself in the Play category, but, playing this game has really gotten me to develop my "Game" skill set over time.

Sadly, I'm usually better at seeing what other people should do in their games than what I should do in my own... but I do really enjoy punching or blasting the evil jerks on the other team. :)

Had to vote "Play"; Though I do enjoy the strategy and team-building, for me Heroclix is ultimately about playing with little MODOKs and Mxyzptlks.

At the end of the day, I'm just a sucker for Superhero Stuff (see also: my obsession with "City of Heroes", lol).

I'm primarily a collector who occasionally has a game or two so I guess that's "PLAY". I'm surprised collector didn't even come up on the survey.

I'm very much a 'player.' The 'gamer' in me still takes a backseat to OOO SPIDER-MAN! SUPERMAN! FIRESTORM! WHEE!

Not sure why it has to be either/or.

I fall into the missing "Both" catagory.

I love the comic play involved, but I am a competitive person so I occasionally really like to throw down.

Not sure why it has to be either/or.

That's why I ask "primarily"... because as far as I can tell one is dominant between the two.

I do see that I should have included Collector. Maybe I'll check this again after Blackest Night and see how people are doing then, including Collector. Though the reason for leaving it out was that I'm more curious about people playing with friends or in tournaments and what about the game is the principle reason for playing.

Sounds like you're a "play"-er primarily :)

I'm obsessed with strategy but when I see the Mighty Thor crit hit Enchantress (with her defense sp outwitted) for 7 damage into a wall for a one hit KO i cant help but freak out at how awesome that is.

Nothing excites me more than seeing the Justice League of America on the map tearing into a villain team. It's bliss!

Nailed it. I could not have said it better myself.
My interest in the game initially was to have fun team battles, like Suicide Squad vs. Thunderbolts, League of Assassins vs. The HAND... my buddy would play the Marvel team, and I'd play the DC team, usually.

Then, I got into my first tournament and saw players using strategy to their teams rather than playing them for the fun of it. There would eventually come a point in time where I became competitive than playful, but now I've eventually learned to make a good balance of both. It's having your cake (or cheese, when it comes to Heroclix) and eating it, too.

I always enjoy seeing comic characters throw down on the board, and I like having other people who enjoy the same. When a game gets competitive, it's great, but I'm primarily a "Play"er.

Ya gotta admit, seeing Darkhawk and Invincible duke it out with Superman is always cool...

I voted play... but I'm in the middle. I love the competition and strategy. But I also only play comic book accurate theme teams, keyword or not.

Definitely the "play" aspect, though if the game sucked, I would have stopped.

My favorite games to "play" are the ones that require a lot of "gaming" first. Magic the Gathering is one of the top games around IMO because being good at it has so much more to do with building your deck than it does w/ playing it. Which, for me, makes the playing tons of fun. Right now I play clix w/ a guy that doesn't have any. So I'm making multiple builds and he choses one and I chose one and we get it on. It's great.

I chose the first one but Iam really a Hardcore Comic Book Geek and have been one since my childhood but I also love to win but usually the geek within wins everytime I even have my Heroclix box seperated by teams and Characters so yeah Iam a huge Comic Book Geek and I make certain Superhero teams for fun too :) Like for example The JLA, The Gotham Knights,The Teen Titans and JSA etc..... :) :) :)
