My first mod is Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan, Steranko Era. The forum tips and tutorials have been a tremendous help; thanks guys! As you can see, I've stayed consistent with the IC and CT figures. The idea came from one of Steranko's covers.
Any feedback from the community with regard to pose, proportions, final touches (like belt pouches), etc? (Before painting prep.)

He's looking pretty good. I'd have to see it in hand to be sure, but it seems that all of his limbs are balanced and in proportion.
I would definitely use a primer before painting, as otherwise you may get a different final colour on one arm compared to the other.

Saturday, I stripped the paint using pure acetone; applied with a cotton swab. Also note that I flipped the holster and satchel (made more sense to me) and shortened the right glove a bit. The following parts were used so far:
Head - Exp. Blackhawk (Origin)
Upper torso, right leg - Shield Agent (Infinity Challenge)
Left leg - Captain America (Infinity Challenge)
Right arm - Creeper (JLA)
Right hand - Magneto (Infinity Challenge)
Bowler - Riddler (Arkham Asylum)
Base - Thor (Hammer of Thor)

BTW, how are photos looking? I know brightness varies between monitors and operating systems.
looking really cool so far. cant wait to see the finished article.
in regards to pose it looks near on perfect. and this is only my opinion but id personally angle the arm holding the gun at the elbow a little...but that is so minor. im sure once youve painted it up itll look great :)

Yeah, it's hard to see from those angles; looking down on the figure, a slight bend at the elbow can be seen.
I've ordered citadel spray primer (white or black?) and in the meantime giving him a holster belt to boot!
More pictures this weekend...

The only critique I have is that I'd lower the bowler on his head a bit. Either way, it looks really good. NICE MOD.

A close-fitting hat such as this would rest above the forehead as did chaplin's (above). It was too low on the original dugan (left). I chose to cut right below the hairline in the front (right).

But the artist rendering varied through the years, so it's anybody's guess how dum dum actually wore it! ;) On the game table, however, I think such differences will be imperceptible.

For this figure, I will generally be using darker colors for the shield uniform and hat except for the face, gloves and boots. I chose to undercoat with citadel's chaos black.

Did anyone notice the huge shield emblem missing from his chest? Back in the days of Strange Tales and Ditko's 1970 run, there were no badges or patches on the uniforms. Looking ahead, should I use the more recent shoulder patch?

I'd include the shoulder patch. It looks like you're planning for the mod to be wearing the Shield Uniform, and not the generic "army" uniform he's wearing in the first picture.

This thread has been absolutely wonderful to read!
It is a real pleasure to see someone invest so much thoughtful time into this creative process. The fruits of that labor are obviously paying off, since the product is looking FANTASTIC.
BTW, how are photos looking? I know brightness varies between monitors and operating systems.
I have a Macbook hooked to a 19" flat panel desk setup. The images look good on both screens. Balanced lighting with no overly strong shadows, good clarity and detail in the images, and plenty of turn-arounds to show all angles of the 3 dimensional sculpt.

I always paint the face first. Brushthralls.com (http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=3680) has an excellent tutorial that I've had reasonable success with.
Starting with a medium red-brown basecoat, GW 61-12 Scorched Brown, my first highlight coat is Dwarf Flesh. I use it to cover almost all of the Scorched Brown. The final highlight is with GW 61-23 Elf Flesh, applied liberally to his nose, cheekbones, chin and rims of his ears.

For his red hair (below) I mix GW 61-17 Bleached Bone, 61-22 Bronzed Flesh and 61-14 Snakebite Leather for a basecoate. Exact mix isn't important.
Washed it with a diluted Brown Ink/GW 61-19 Vermin Brown mix.
Highlighted with the base color, mixing in more of Bronzed Flesh and Bleached Bone to lighten the tones.

After painting the face, I proceeded to basecoat the uniform.

Since I wanted to keep the clothing dark, I mixed a deep blue color to work up from. My initial mix was 1:1:2 Chaos Black : Midnight Blue : Regal Blue. Thinned down, it took three coats to achieve a solid color.
I kept with the dark blue for my highlights, a mix of 1:2 Midnight Blue : Regal Blue. This was painted over the previous color in a series of translucent layers, five or six in all. Final highlights of Regal Blue were then layered on the areas that would receive the most natural light.
I’ve painted the blue to reinforce an overhead light source. The white needs to use the same source point.
