View Full Version : What "Modern Age" set did you purchase the most of?

For reason of comparison, I'm curious to know what kind of money people have spent on other Heroclix sets that are now considered part of the "Modern Age" (Avengers - present day). I know not all of these sets were released in equal quantities, so a set selling out doesn't mean that much. also, the economic situation of many people has changed in the past few years, so I would expect people to be buying less in the last couple of years. I decided to go ahead and include TB&TB in this poll, as many have probably pre-ordered bricks and have a good idea of how much they intend on buying.

That being said, I also know a lot of members, here, have been playing the game for a long time and have probably made it a priority to buy some heroclix from every set. So what set did you buy the most of?

Also, if you feel like sharing, exactly how much did you buy and why?

Arkham...only because it was out the longest and we did sealed events during the hiatus.

Crisis was the one that I got the most of. I am not sure why, but when I look at my collection thats where most of the figs come from.

Including Bricks and Cases and boosters - probably nearly 3 cases. Will do the same, or worse, for Web of Spider-Man.

Avengers was my last big purchase (2 cases). I have been buying a brick otherwise.

I bought the hell out of Crisis.
With Green Lanterns, Metal Men, Teen Titans, and the two chase Superman figures it was mt favorite DC set made so far!

I had to pick Justice League due to the whole starro event that went along with it. In addition to my normal purchases, I was playing sealed every week.

Crisis, by far. Chasing Supes, through brick, after brick, after brick, after brick, after...

As you remember thats the set I bought the most of as well. Its funny actually because thats the set that I have the least from right now. I pulled 3 Sinestros at one point.

Yup I bought 3 cases and still no supes. I'm just glad my extras got both Supermen. Now I don't even own them any longer. i'm just a mess.

Personally, this is how it breaks down for me:

Avengers: 3 bricks & a few boosters
Justice League: 2 bricks and a few boosters
Monsters and Mutations: 2 bricks and a few boosters
Crisis: A few boosters
Secret Invasion: 7 bricks and a few boosters
Arkham Asylum: 4 bricks and a few boosters
Hammer of Thor: 2 bricks
The Brave and the Bold: A few boosters

Avengers: It was a new set and I thought the character selection was pretty decent (I like Ultimate Marvel). The sealed events and prize Support were excellent and I enjoyed the set, overall.

Justice League: Again, good character selection, good sealed events and prize support. A lot of fun pieces to use (Batman, Gypsy, Plastic Man, Bronze Tiger) and some really nice sculpts (Lobo, Doomsday, Plastic Man, Toyman).

Monsters and Mutations: I lost my job around this point, so I only bought for one sealed event at the time. Later I purchased a case for myself, using some Christmas gift money. Since I loved Planet Hulk and Marvel Zombies, I was very excited about the characters in the set. Never did get a Dark Beast, though.

Crisis: I bought very little of this set for three reasons: The character selection didn't thrill me, I was still looking for a new job, and the set sold out very quickly. I played a couple of sealed events, and later bought most of the set off ebay. Even though I still don't like the character selection, I have to say that most of the pieces were pretty playable, and the chases were neat.

Secret Invasion: By far, I bought the most of this set. The character selection was great, there were many characters that were and are VERY fun to play (Spider-Woman, Namor, Ms. Skrullvel, Thing, Dr. Strange, Gamora) and the chases didn't seem as hard to come by (I pulled one from each of the three cases I bought). Being back to work was a very good thing, and I played in more sealed events for this set than for any other.

Arkham Asylum: I played a few sealed events but did not pre-order anything. Later, I again used some Christmas maney to buy a case online at a very good price. Since I got such a good deal and so many duplicates, I sold about half of what I had pulled and bought another case - getting pretty much exactly what I got in the first case. :ermm: So, I ended up re-selling most of that stuff, too. Never pulled a chase, but have all the set except Sabacc. I wasn't that excited by a lot of this set, but the SR pieces in this stand out as being good and I was happy to see some Sinestro Corps members see print.

Hammer of Thor: I wanted a case of this so badly, but could not afford it at the time of release. I played in a couple of seled events (without buying anything) and waited patiently until Christmas to buy a case. Fortunately, there were still a few out there to find, online. I must have got one of the last, because I don't see them anywhere anymore. A great set! I'm no fan of Thor or Asgard, but the pieces were so playable and the new minion mechanic was genius. I wish I could have bought more of this at the time of release. Now I just need Ultron. ;)

TB&TB: Have not pre-ordered anything. This set just does not look very good. I plan to play in a few sealed events and pick up a few pieces that look exceptional (Talia for sure). The character selection isn't anything special, I'm no fan of duos, and the new AE game mechanic I am very skeptical about. No set has ever had me less excited about its upcoming release. However, I am very happy to hear that the next set will focus on Spider-Man's world and the Dark Avengers!

Crisis. I thought I'd be getting four Worlds Finest with my two cases. All I got was an incomplete set and no chases.

Crisis. Easily.

I bought 2.5 cases, and scores of boosters for sealeds and trades. I got the E-2 Superman immediately, but would have done this regardless, because that character remains my most wanted figure of all time.

I bought Crisis out the wazoo because of the chase supermans and the tournaments that required it BUT I ended it with the most of AA because of the King of the Mountain Tournament that I won at the last WWTX in 2008 which was the last whooraa and the day before Wizkids went on sabatical.

If I knew how well I was gonna do I wouldnt have purchased 2 cases prior to flying out. I ended up with 3 complete CUR+SR sets (including the factory sealed that I also won) and have tons still leftover.

Glad I liked the set.....and even with all that product that I won and purchased I had to BUY both of the dang Batmans cause I never pulled even one out of 3 1/2 cases of boosters. By and far the worst chase pull ratio for me in any set.

Now HoT? Yeah, 2 Cases...2 Chases, 4 Odins made easy trade to complete the 4 I was missing.

AWESOME...total expenditure on that set was $70

I try to get my hands on every character from every set so any set that has generics would be the set I buy more of because I loves me some generic armies.

BatB - I've ordered a case from my retailer, which is the first time that I've ever ordered more than a brick. And given that I usually wind up buying about as many or more boosters in singles as I put in an order for, chances are good that I'll wind up with three bricks' worth and change before I'm done.

I'm hoping that my usual luck holds out - I've gotten a Zombie Wolverine, Lois Lane, two of the 317-point Superman, and a God Pack with Thorbuster, Odin, Hela, Ultron and Venus. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can pull a Nekron...

I honestly don't know if it is going to be Crisis or B&TB. Because the set hasn't released yet, I don't know how much over the brick that I preordered I'm going to be purchasing. I would think that a great deal of gamers are in the same boat, where they preorder some set, but then they pick up a booster here and there for a while until it adds up. For this reason I think that B&TB will be underrepresented in the poll.

Edit: Batman: Alpha is missing from the poll, and that was my third most purchased set from the list. Alfred, Riddler, and Oracle are decent clix...

I've purchased cases of all the DC sets and probably got the most loose packs of Crisis, trying to find another Superman (and it worked).

Marvel I bought a brick of Hammer, but may have bought more SI, after buying almost a brick's worth of clearance packs a couple months ago.

It was probably Hammer of Thor...I was SOOOOO excited that the game had been resurrected that I bought nearly double what I normally do on release day!

Couldn't choose 2 but for me it was Arkham Asylum and Secret Invasion. Wanted to get lots of Crisis figs but they sold out as soon as I bought a case.

I picked HoT - it was the largest booster purchase from me (between initial purchases and sealed events, bought a case). However, if it's just straight money, it was AA or Crisis, because of chase purchases on the singles market (I have Lampost Batman and E-2 Superman that I bought during the hiatus).

Couldn't vote as I buy a case for every marvel set.
Just pick up a few DC figs from the the big E, and repaint em for my own teams.

HoT. I bought a 'case' (actually 2 bricks on 2 different days, from 2 different stores).

The other sets, I've bought a Brick + of, but I will only be buying maybe a booster of BaTB, and then singles from the secondary market.

I picked SI, but the poll feels weird for having a set that's not out yet on the roster...

I bought a case of Crisis and B&B but went with Crisis. I may have bought a few extra boosters (can't remember) but I definitely won't be doing that with B&B. It has nothing to do with the set, but just because I have moved to a rural area and don't have a venue near me anymore. AA was a unique situation; my wife had recently had surgery, so I wasn't going to buy anything and just trade for the set but my players gifted me a CUR set plus about 5 SRs and a Lamppost Batman chase.

I'm a DC completest and don't have much interest in Marvel, so my Marvel purchases are always slim. In fact, I haven't bought a single booster of HoT, which is rear even for me. If I had a venue near me, I'm sure I would have purchased some, but there is no real motivation for me to get Marvel anymore since there is so much more DC than there used to be.

04/12/2010, 13:25
I voted Mutations and Monsters only because i was able to buy more of it over time. For Crisis and HoT we ran out very quickly at our store and I could not get more from him and as I do not purchase anything very often on the secondary market I was limited on 2 sets I would have purchesed at least a case and half on. But I was stuck with a brick and couple of boosters of each.

The poll should have the option of selecting more than one:

I selected AA, but it is a toss up between that and HoT...

I bought a brick from Thor, but was saddened by the selection... way too many duplicates. This time I'm going to go back to my old strategy of picking up a few boosters and picking off what else I may want via ebay or at local stores.

I bought the *Expletive* out of Crisis. It has the most Teen Titans characters and from the Mini-Series that I most familar with. It has a perfect blend of single/duo ratio and a perfect selection of characters for common, Un/Rare and SR. I started out with a case and booster or two for every weeks after that (a total of maybe around three cases). This set was the most successful of all the other set for me since I got a spare SR of the best (Specter, Monitor...etc.). And is the first set I consistantly pull chases after chases (total of four) out of boosters. loved that set.

I usually buy singles but I bought a case and a half of Arkham trying to pull Superman Prime and never got him. I know most people hate him but I love the character.

Secret Invasion 1 case. HoT 1 case. All others as singles only.

The most I've bought so far is three bricks for Hammer of Thor, plus assorted boosters for drafts and sealed events. I would like to have bought more of Crisis but the set sold out too quickly.

I pretty much buy a brick of each set when it comes out, and then trade for extras I need, but I definitely picked up many additional boosters of Arkham Asylum. What a great set. One of the best they've ever done, IMO.

It's pretty close for me between Crisis & Arkham.

We played alot of sealed games with Crisis though so I think that edged AA.

I bought about a brick for HoT. BaTB will be the most as I've pre-ordered a case.

The last brick of boosters that I bought was for the Crisis release. Haven't had a whole lot of extra money to play the booster lottery since then, though I have played in the occasional sealed event.

HoT. I bought about 2.5 cases.

04/12/2010, 15:34
Probably avengers since I am a huge avengers fan.. B&TB is a bit skewed thus far since it's not officially out.. So that doesn't take into account the extra boosters people will be pickin up.

BigDuke
04/12/2010, 15:44
The first clix I bought were Avengers and I bought a bunch (probably 3-4 bricks worth)before I became shrewder in the way of clix. Next most was HoT, 2 bricks and a few boosters. I bought about 1.5 bricks of JL, and have been buying single figures from Crisis and Arkham since less than half of those figures interested me. I have one brick on order for B&B and whatever I want that I don't get I will buy as singles. It just doesn't make sense to have all those extra commons lying around.

04/12/2010, 17:10
For myself I would think either Justice League or Avengers. I've been buying a case since Legacy and a few odd boosters every now and then. So any extra large purchases of boosters would have to be from sealed/marquee tourneys.

Becase back then as we all know Wizkids was forcing everyone to buy Boosters to play every week to play in the Galactus and Starro events. My venue had our largest turnouts with the Avengers/Galactus events. We averaged 16 or 17 players each week with a high of 22.

But with JL/Starro. Everyone here was sick of being forced into buying boosters. I think 9 was the most we had at any one tourney. Wizkids own greed back then almost killed the game at my venue all by themselves.

I bought a Brick of Crisis,Arkham and The Brave&The Bold even though it ain't out yet. The most from a set I've bought from is Crisis though The Character selection was amazing. I want to buy one of the chase Superman's though which will cost big time $ at my local comic convention :(

It is a toss-up between about 4 of them, but I voted Hammer of Thor, which probably edges the others out. Arkham Asylum is probably a very close second.

I voted for Avengers but the only reason why I ended up buying more of that set then the others is because of all the sealed events they made us do. JL comes in a close second for the same reason.

I got caught up in Heroclix's return and bought More of Hammer of Thor, and collected a complete Set (CUR and almost all SRs) faster than any other set to date, and I've been playing since the beginning... I still didn't get any friggin chase figures though~!! I really wish I could say Crisis. I will still buy packs of Crisis or Justice League when I can find them.

Avengers. It was really new to all of us and I was really interested in it. Boy what a waste I spent :P. Just kiddin, but I would have rather spent more on a different set.

phantalien
04/12/2010, 20:16
Avengers due to the coming of Galactus events and the amount of venues open where I could play.

Crisis because I really liked the set and if I saw packs I would impulsively buy a few because of chases and some SRs were hard to obtain; Sinestro, Monitor, and making a super cheese team with many Dawnstars :p

Going to be Batb as I was away from the game for a few years before the hiatus came out just to come back on when HoT was released. I didn't buy any of HoT but I am buying a brick of the new set, so by default, Brave and the Bold wins.

I only ever bought a brick (plus maybe about another half dozen or so boosters over time) for one set - it was Crisis. I knew I wanted as much from that set as I could get my grubby little hands on.
Most sets, my desired list consists of about a dozen or so characters.

I am newer to Heroclix. I started playing a few weeks before HoT and fell inlove with the game(I didnt even read comics!). I have since went wild and purchased a ton of these things. Looking at my collection I have the most characters/Dupes from AV and SI. I dont know why I have so many AV though. I dont really like much in that set. I just bought them before I really knew what was good to buy because I thought alot of the pieces looked cool. Just to let ya know where I was coming from, I thought Dragon man was the end all - be all piece ever made. Now that I KNOW how to play, all the ones I have have dust on them. I probably bought LESS of HoT. Only because there wasnt much around my store. I got a case that had a God Pack and only lacked 3 SR's so besides a sealed or two that was it. I already have 2 cases of BatB pre-ordered as it is the first set I have ever been excited for.

Arkham, because everyone bought the hell out of Crisis before I started playing.

Actually, I started playing after Arkham came out, so that's the most likely reason.

I have to say BatB due to the fact that I pre-ordered a case and a half three months ago now. That olus add 3 venues doing at least 3 sealeds apiece adds another 18 boosters to this. I will never be re-ordering again, at least not that early(considering ppl have been getting emails from the same place I bought mine aboot how theirs are being shipped out already and I ain't heard #### so I guess I wont be opening any til sealed on thursday)

B4 I made this mistake, It was SI easily. Brick for my self, then sealeds, then got a friend into the game and wee both went in on a case of SI and AA.

Normally it averages aboot a case on sets
