View Full Version : Question about Sealed and AEs

So I bought a few boosters over lunch and pulled a few AEs. We've got a sealed later tonight so I was curious what happens if you pull the AE, like Bruce Wayne, but don't pull Batman. Can you still use the AE ability if you actually own Batman but didn't pull him? Or can you only use him if you pull him? I'm thinking you can use it if you own Batman, even if you didn't pull him, but figured I'd ask to be on the safe side.
At my venue I would rule that you can only upgrade/swap via the AE mechanic if you pulled both of the figures from your boosters for the sealed event. If you did only pull Bruce Wayne for example, you are welcome to play him, but just not to use the AE power to swap him out for Batman on his orange starting line. My reasoning stems from the ruling forbidding the use of special objects that did not come form the boosters you opened in sealed events. To me this is the same thing: introducing an outside element to a game format that does not allow outside gameplay elements.

I agree with SFBull 100%.

What about this situation: You pull both a Bruce Wayne and a Batman, and you put both on your team. Batman is KOed and so not on the map. Bruce Wayne takes some damage, so that he has the special power. Can he swap out for the Batman figure, which you pulled from a booster but also played earlier in that very game?

I'd allow it at my venue unless we hear otherwise.

nbperp said something similar about if you had 2 bruce waynes and 1 batman, you could have 1 turn into batman then have him be KO'ed then have the other turn into batman.
The way I look at it, the rules for sealed play are basically that your "collection" changes from "everything you own" to "whatever you pulled out of the booster".

I don't know how drafts are traditionally done but at my venue all the pieces we aren't using for our teams goes into a pile. After the game are teams go in and we draft out all the pieces for keeps (i don't believe that's how its done regularly, i think you just keep what you pull?)
Anyhow, could i use Bruce to pull a Batman out of the ante pile? Also can Bruce be given Brilliant Tactician?

For BT, I think the answer is yes.
As far as the ante pile goes, that's a question for your head judge. FWIW, I would probably say you'd need to draft the figure (even if it doesn't go onto your starting force). Otherwise, what happens if 2 players have Bruce - which one gets to use Batman?

Why? He's got no Perplex.
BUT, you can assign it to Bruce, switch to Batman and use it.
That's as far as I can tell.

Good point. I think that we'll just have to keep the AE's we draft aside in a sideboard.
Thanks
