View Full Version : Playing for Keeps

Wondering if anyone else out there is into this style of Clix play. I have a group of friends who "play for keeps". They feel like the game is more fun when everyone has some skin in the game.
The rules are basically that the winner of the game keeps any of the opponents pieces he KO's during the game. They also hate Firelord and have banned him from their team play.
It's tough to stomach actually risking losing figures you like, but it is interesting in terms of strategy. Players hesitate to risk any characters that are valuable (ie: expensive to replace) but it can pay off to use that valuable figure to press an advantage against a more conservative opponent.
The one and only time I played with these guys I used my Nightcrawler (it was an extra I could afford to lose if I had to) and tipped the scales to win the battle for me, and I did end up with an E-Magneto I needed.
All in all it was sort of fun gambling like that, but added a whole level of stressed out intensity that I wouldn't want to deal with regularly.
Anyone else tried playing like this - or any other variations on game play to make things more interesting?

We dont play for figures, but sometimes we place money on the games, best 2 out of 3. Usually no more than 20 bucks. Its fun, plus you have an incentive to put your opponents team to shame.
Im not brave enough to play for figures, my strategy usually gets a great many of my figures KOed. Besides, if I played that way, I couldnt field ANY characters I liked, because I always lose at least one figure.

I played in ONE Ironman Young Jedi tournament. Every time you took damage or discarded cards, they were destroyed. Nothing like watching a foil card going through a paper shredder.

... there was a reason M:tG banned cards that affected anted cards. the notion of having to put something constantly at risk is an absurdity when it comes down to it... particularly when you've a set of something, and your opponent's going to insist on breaking that set just because they managed to ko the figure.
But then, I'm not one to play kill and keep- it's one thing if it's a huge game against a judge/venue and the keepers are the pieces that come from the venue...

I've played for keeps a couple of times with my friends. We are all little kitties and always play with garbage pieces that we don't mind losing.

My buddies and I will sometimes chip in on a couple boosters and play for the best figure. but never anything out of our own collections

I played in a tournament where we were all randomly given LE's to build a team around. If you managed to kill one of the LE's another character controlled, you kept it at the end of the game. We played Battle Royal style, 4 people on each map. It was fun; you got the thrill of "Oh man...I might LOSE this figure!", but you weren't really risking anything of your own.
I ended up with 3 from that game! My Norman Osborn LE will always hold a special place in my heart (since he pretty much ran that whole map lol).

I just read that thread last night. I'm still trying to figure out what was going on with the bit about "Keith."
