Shield Ability Question?

with the shield ability you can boost damage by add a Power action token to your characters. Does this come from your normal allotment of token,
ie 300 points you get 3 tokens, do you have to use one of the 3 or is this an action that just gets a token, but no from your allotment?

It is a power action like any other, so it comes from your allotment.
