did anyone else read the inquest article featuring the heroclix world champion. I was kind of put off by the fact that his army was a firelord, bullseye, and blackpanther. Also, his greatest moment was winning by stalling for ten turns and then blasting someone's medic for the win. Maybe I'm just jealous because he's "independently wealthy". It just made me glad I don't play at that level.
To me...
This is just another guy...
There is no HeroClix World champion.

with that kind of team, it's almost an flawless winning team
There is no World Champion, that was a mistake on Inquests part. Imagine that, Inquest putting up an article with shoddy details...
I was also very upset by what he wrote. If he was one of my players, I'd be one unhappy Judge. Just in stating his 'greatest bit of stalling in a tournament situation" he comes across to me as a bad sport.
But I'm just bitter... I hate people that only have fun by winning...

plus, you learn more from loosing than you do from winning. Stalling is a very ####py way to win though.
I personally play to win, but I fail to see the point in even playing if you're just going to sit there for 1/2 an hour and then smack a medic for 12 points. That's not a game.
If the guy really is independantly wealthy, does he have such a boring life that he has to run around being a poor sport like that? Can't he just buy the LE's off eBay and stop wasting people's time?
Ahhh, but at the end of the article it's revealed he's not independently wealthy or a world champ and Firelord didn't marry him after all.

It just seemed to me to embody all of the things that are wrong with heroclix. I'm glad I have yet to play someone like that.

I'm just astonished that nobody beat that team. It's really not all that effective and there are so many counters to it (even before the release of CT, which added so many more countermeasures).

When I read the article I found him to be incredibly cocky. I would like the opportunity to play him beacuse there is nothing I like more than beating someone who is that full of themselves. Unfortunately, I have to work for a living and spend my money on more important things than traveling to every Heroclix event.

In this inquest article, did they mention where this tournament was played at. The reason I ask is because the only major HC tournaments that have taken place were at Origins and GenCon last year. The same guy one both of them. His first name is Rex I believe. Anyways, he is power gamer. I watched him play at GenCon and he is very tricky when it comes to a ten turn, fifty minute, game. His opponent at GenCon was doing well, i.e. KO'ed Rex's experienced Bullseye and rookie Vulture. But only after that Bullseye/Vulture combo landed a shot on each of his veteran Bullseyes. Once Rex's opponent had his Bullseyes weakend, Rex used his experienced Firelord to KO each Bullseye before a medic could be used. Once he killed each Bullseye, Rex retreated his entire force to the rooftops where he placed his Firelord and Wasp on elevated blocking terrain. This was on turn seven or eight I believe. There was absolutely know way for Rex's opponent to try and kill anything because Rex ran away once he killed the bullseyes. The frustration on his opponents face was enough to make me mad. Come to find out this guy had been doing the same tactic all tournament. KO two or three figures then run and hide.
He played the following,
Exp. Firelord (81pts)
Exp. Wasp (33pts)
Exp. Bullseye (31pts)
Rok. Vulture (15pts)
Rok. Black Panther (27pts)
Rok. Hydra Medic (12pts)
At origins the tournament was sealed booster, but he got a rookie Firelord, rookie bullseye, two experienced Wasps, and two Hydra medics plus some other ####. Anybody can win with that pull.
I hope to see this guy at GenCon this year for the HC GenCon championships.
I personally see nothing wrong with Rex's strategy(well, I do have a problem with stalling, though not because it's "cheesey," but because it usually requires giving up a chance to score points, it's importent to try for as big a victory as possible in a large tournament format where every point counts). I kind of get tired of members of this forum who complain about people who "play heroclix to win," I personally have fun just playing Hero Clix, win or lose, but my goal as I'm playing is to win(and I don't think there is anything wrong with that). This Rex person played very good figures and he played them very well, he deserved to win.

I do think it's cheesy, but I don't think it's wrong, at least not in a "Convention" tournament. You go there to beat other players and win a prize. You go to your local shop tournaments to have fun and win a prize. Rather than gripe, it would be much more satisfying to hear about someone going to play the Anti cheese team, to try to make sure no cheesy teams win. So what if you don't win overall, you can still be the one to have knocked off their team.

hahahaha, I can't believe people aren't putting teams together to actually take into account firelord teams.
Or worse case scenario. To heck with the medics...
E-Wasp x2
R-Firelord x2
Try to close and go b2b with his firelord and whoever's firelord taxi is. Try to lock them all up in combat. Key is getting the first hit. Hopefully you'll hit his firelord once which will really hurt his team. Use the other firelord to either attack close combat on bullseye (which takes away the +2 to his defense and still hurts him) or take the chance to do 5 points to him. After that, he's going to have to break away and use the medic (which will cost 2 actions). Next up for you is to push (key is pushing a lot) and going b2b with the medic/firelord and pounding firelord into the ground again (can't heal if the target and/or medic is b2b with the enemy). From there it's smoooooth sailing. :)
Of course, that's if you want to fight fire w/fire.

I saw someone using exactly that team against Rex. They lost.
More generally, bear in mind that the events in question all took place over 6 months ago. The game has moved on a bit since then. No doubt, Rex is keeping pace with developments and it'll be interesting to see what teams he is fielding now. What, for example, will he play in a DC event?

Something unoriginal no dout, but powerful and fair none the less.

Yeah, Rex is a dork. Tell him I said that. Me. The guy over here. I'm going to Origins and GenCon, so maybe I'll get to remind him I was the one who said this way back in February. I wonder if he plays sealed events. Can he handle the lack of total control?

REX is one of the few examples of why HEROCLIX CANNOT BE PLAYED AT A COMPETITIVE LEVEL BECAUSE IT IS BROKEN
that is why there isn't a ranking system yet and even if there was a ranking system it would be horrible because of all the exploits in the game. the designer HIMSELF said in his little interview with hcrealms that he doesn't like the rules and exploits of the game and you know why? because not even the designer likes it when firelords are taxied to medics constantly and people play turtle/chicken/clock tactics. he mentioned that this game should be about brawling head to head, but even he knows the rules don't lend to that.
i would love to have heroclix be a competitive game and i think the rules that we use now can be changed to fill in all the holes very easily (and if not easy at least it is not an impossible task) but for some reason wizkids drags their feet when making changes (is it because they don't have enough playtesters? $7 dollars for 4 pieces of plastic made in china should be more than enough to cover some more playtesters)
so in conclusion HEROCLIX IS BROKEN
... and i would have had the impulse to kick rex's rear if he pulled that #### on me, but he followed the rules... so i guess i'll have to find a wizkids employee to vent my anger instead.

And I get tired of members of this forum who continue to justify going against the spirit of the game. The article stated that they each moved their pieces the first two turns and then passed the next eight or so turns until making last second attacks. If that's the way they play at the "top" level, I'll just stay at my local comic shop. It's a heck of a lot more fun. If everyone played like that, how long do you think this game would last? Everyone would stop playing because it would be boring and pointless. Reading a major tournament report should be exciting, interesting, and something that we could learn from. Instead, it's like they took several steps back and regressed. Oh, and just imagine how "exciting" it would be to watch something like this on a big screen compared to watching a world championship or pro tour final of something like Magic the Gathering. I only use MTG because I've seen them do this kind of coverage, well, if HC has top matches like this often, they can forget that idea.
Very valid and accurate points Xavier PHD. I agree. If Heroclix wants to step up with the biggest games out there and the major tournament scenes, they need to fix their system fast. Stop wasting time. The person that was interviewed the other day seemed to agree with several of the issues, but they continue to let time go by.

You're right, Tsannik old boy, there is no World Champion....til this summer. And "The Rex" is hardly a guy I would acknowledge as such anyway, based on his posts around here...

You have to understand that the "spirit of the game" is different for different people. In my opinion the "spirit of the game" to try and build the best team possible with in the rules and put it up against what your opponent thinks is the best team possible with in the rules and to have fun win or lose.
I do however agree with Xavior PhD that the Hero Clix has a lot of rules that could be improved(especially the rules that allow dupes and stalling) to add some more strategy to the game. But until the rules are changed, I'm not going to put down the people who play by them.

I'm just curious about this, so I'll open the question up to the floor: when you first saw that ads for Heroclix, the pictures of the little clickybase figures, and heard about the game concept, was your first thought something like this:
"Cool! I'll be able to run Spider-Man and Daredevil up against the Kingpin and an army of mafia thugs!"
Or was it this:
"Excellent! Tournament play! LE figures! I will find out what the best figures in the game are and I will play them until I have stepped on the throats of all who oppose me!"
All right, that's maybe a bit much, but whenever I hear people whine about competitive play, I get a little pensive.
Ok people, the Rex bashing fest was a loooong time since past. I for one, was very harsh on him, especially when he had his " I am the Rex...!!!" thread going. However, as many have pointed out, it's been over and done with. New figs, new teams, more possibilities. More cheese? Only the krafty may have real shots at winning, to not build a team like that and win, should bring even more gratification.
Whatever the game, there will always be cheese. As a community, we should slice through it, and make HC the game it was intended to be.
