View Full Version : JLI ATA Question
Forgive me if this has been asked already, but I was contemplating the JLI ATA the other day:
"When a character that possesses this team ability would be dealt damage, you can instead choose to reduce damage dealt by 1 if you deal 1 unavoidable damage to a friendly character that possesses this team ability and is adjacent to the first character"
Could you conceivably use this power multiple times per attack? It never says that you can only do it once per attack. So, say Fire and Ice are hit for 4 damage. Could I deal all 4 as unavoidable damage to, say, an adjacent Rocket Red, thus not allowing Fire and Ice to take any?
Please advise. Thanks!

nope otherwise no one would be able to hurt anyone with toughness since it says the same thing, reduce damage by one.

The triggering condition for this team ability to work is the dealing of damage. Damage is only dealt one time so I'd say you'd only be able to use it one time each time damage is dealt regardless of how many characters possessing the team ability are adjacent to the character being dealt damage.

If it said 'for each unavoidable damage', then yes. But, based on its wording, I would say this is once per damage source
Also of note:
1) You have to choose to use this ability before you roll for Impervious.
2) You can choose to use this ability after you roll Super Senses.
3) It does NOT trigger Mystics on the non-targeted figure.
4) You do not deal knockback to the non-targeted figure.
Thanks for the help, all! One other question:
Let's say, in my example earlier, that Fire and Ice are on one of their clicks where they have Toughness, and are dealt 4. So, can their Toughness absorb one, the ATA pass one off to another, and then they only take a net 2 Damage, correct?

Damage reducers can possibly stack, yes.
It doesn't happen often, but with odd circumstances (like Nico using Impervious with Staff of One and then Compelled to use Invulnerability) it could happen.
I say 'possibly' because prior to this ATA, the most common way a character could get an extra bit of damage reduction was via the Life Model Decoy feat... and that specifically says that it only works if the damage wasn't otherwise reduced. So it wasn't really a big deal before. This JLI TA, though, looks like it has no such 'no prior reduction' provision.

Why would you have to use the alternate team ability first???
If you hit the imperv it reduced damage dealt to 0. If not it reduces damage dealt by 2. The end result is still damage dealt, which still triggers the power.

I think that part will be in effect as of Blackest Night. Impervious' wording has been changed from, "When this character would be dealt damage", to, "When this character is dealt damage". I believe "would be" comes before "is" so the team ability would have to be used first.
I know and love that HeroClix is a verbiage-based game, but I never thought "is" would be an important word.

Even after the change in wording I still don't think you have to use it first. Imperv will reduce the damage dealt by 2. The end result is still going to be the damage dealt though. It's not damage taken until you turn the dial.

I would say no simply because I find it unbelievable that Rocket Red would be close enough to use the TA. "In that box in the back of my closet" is not "adjacent." Or so the rules lawyers keep telling me.

Another easy way for having a character use two damage reducers is event dials.
Atlantis Attacks - becoming serpent men
and
Infinity Gauntlet - gem effect power
both give a character a damage reducer, with no stipulation that it not already possess one.

If you Compelled Nico, could you give her a second Impervious? She hadn't used it during her last turn or she couldn't have it this turn. Would it stack giving you two rolls to reduce the damage or reducing the damage by 4? On the face of it, it seems like a better idea than Impervious then Invul.
