Okay, maybe I'm showing my age here, but does anyone remember when toys were cool?!?
I mean, I was a huge fan of the original Transformer toys. Cars and planes that became robots who battled for the fate of Earth. They were cool! They looked cool as vehicles, they looked cool as robots, and they looked cool sitting on your dresser. You could even fit a tiny driving figure in some of them like Optimus Prime. Laserbeak, Ravage and Soundwave was always a deadly combo. Even the show rocked!
Now, they are animals and insects. You can barely tell the difference between their two forms. Apparently it didn't sell well enough cause they've decided to go back to the original vehicle mode, however the robots are no longer symetrical. Doors become immovable shields for their arms. None of the arms match the other, and not every arm is guaranteed to have a hand. So sad...
Voltron was cool! Huge as all hell, but still cool!
StarWars with their extending lightsabers!
GI-Joe with their action vehicles (and breakoff thumbs)!
Go-Bots, Mask, and the Knight Rider BigWheel (whatever happened to the bigwheel?)!!!
==========
With the exception of Mega Blox, Lego, and Todd McFarlane's figures, there just doesn't seem to be a perfect marriage with imagination and coolness just yet like their used to be at one point.
Generation one Tramsformers are still the best!
Voltron... I only liked the Vehicle one not the Lions.
Star Wars... the ships were cool, but the figures were less than cool
GI Joe... was only cool when everyone got Swivel arm battle grip.
Go Bots... were for those who couldn't afford Transformers.
MASK was like Star Wars... Vehicles were cool, but the figures weren't
Big Wheel.....ah... that's all you, man...
pokemon and yu-gi-oh... trading card games and cutesy little animals have replaced all the cool toys of our generation.
In my neighborhood, if you had the Knight Rider Big Wheel, you were #### cool!
Star Wars is one of the best toy lines of all time and the first to make figures 3.5 unches tall.
GI JOE is the greatest line of all time. Figs, vehicles....they had a space shuttle, headquarters and a AIRCRAFT CARRIER!!
Mask was super cool, but didn't last unfortunately, but when those commercials hit....
Transformers to me were those mysterious toys....like super cool and you had to have them, but how did they work?! Only the rich kids everyone wanted to be friends with knew!
I was sorta stuck with GoBots...the poor man's Transformers.
And Voltron....in 2nd grade, that was THE hot toy!
I love G1 Transformers. Im a HUGE fan, and cant stand the way the show is done now. Heck, if Megatrons lackeys talked back to him as they do on the new show, hed have BLASTED them to bits in a second. And dont get me started on Galvatron. Hed blast you just for the &^%$ of it. Great show, great figures, and an EXCELLENT recent comic series.

Micronauts. I even had the Marvel comics. Can't remember a blessed one of them now, though, or why I liked them so much.
I was about a year or two too old for Transformers and GI Joe, though. Those were baby toys to me back then.
Yes, and now I play with little plastic figures in colourful tights. My wife just shakes her head.

Beast wars was better as a show than a toyline
In our years creativity in recreation was a must. The toys were created with great panash and stlye, representative of their sources. They held great oppurtunities of imagination in them, while still having several tricks up their sleeves. Now in the toy world, quality has gone down, the action figures have focus more on commerciality than they do in quality of the figure, and in more relation to television than they had been. We all miss the toys of our youth, toys that ispired as well as entertained, toys that involved being cool and being fun and not just being the face of some entertainment character or having too many functions to remember them all.
This is why we play heroclix.
Thank you for your time,

Generation one Tramsformers are still the best!
I agree, way better tan any other set of transformers.
Voltron... I only liked the Vehicle one not the Lions
Owned both sets but played with the lions more, still have both sets though now they sit on my shelf where my wife will allow.
Star Wars... the ships were cool, but the figures were less than cool
Huge disagreement here,Starwars figs were the original figs of the 80's,the only reason GI joe was remade in the 3.5 inch version was because Starwars sold so well.
GI Joe... was only cool when everyone got Swivel arm battle grip
Gi joe rocked because up till then you only had Starwars that had no joints, however they were improved a thousand times over with the kung fu grip.
Go Bots... were for those who couldn't afford Transformers.
Not true,Gobots were the original transformers, they came out at least a year earlier,so give credit where credit is due, without Gobots,no transformers.
MASK was like Star Wars... Vehicles were cool, but the figures weren't
The vehicles were awesome, the figs less then spectacular but at least they were included and did make playing with the vehicles that much better.
I did own a bunch of big wheels but that was when I was super young and the best ride in my neighborhood was the Greenmachine with the hand brake on the side for 180 spinouts, now thats sweet.
Hey, who remembers Jace and The Wheeled Warriors? A small group of humans in suped up vehicles fighting a race of plant monsters that can transform into deadly vehicles as well. Very cool show.

Liking Micronauts was easy - nothing else in the late 70's combined so well the concepts of action figures and construction sets. There's a good reason why these things fetch major dollars on Ebay. Even the lowly Time Traveller, the basic "get one with every vehicle" figure with *amazing* articulation, broke down into about 15 parts with a jewelers screwdriver. I used to do Frankenstein surgery on those things constantly.
Palisades Toys bought the rights to most (all?) the Micronauts line, and have been re-releasing the basic figures. Got a Baron Karza sitting on a shelf in my office.

I loved GI Joe and Transformers G1. I bought my son a generic rip-off of some transformers. Only five bucks got him the firetruck, police car, police cycle, ambulance, and helicopter that all combine into the big guy. I can't remember his name. They also had the "Constructicons" and the jet guys.
I personally liked GI Joe more than transformers. Half the fun of GI Joe was building your vehicles using the blueprints. That was hot and I haven't seen it done since. Except for lego, but those used to be just blocks that you put together and used imagination, NOT the "Harry Potter Castle" playsets they have now. (Although the Star Wars legos are calling me....)
G1 Transformers and GI joes were the coolest toys ever. I still have the original optimus prime! CARTOON NETWORK NEEDS TO STOP SCREWING UP WELL DONE CARTOONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot believe no one has mentioned the ultimate toy line from the early 80's.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Those figures and vehicles rocked!
Logan185
02/20/2003, 16:47
The new He-Man line is the only figures that surpass their predecessors. The new toys are way cooler (did I just say that?) than the original bulky toys. The cartoon is a work of art. Transformers: Armada is an embarassment.
I can't believe no one in here has mentioned the Ubertoys, the greatest toys produced in the twentieth century:
Mego eight-inch fully articulated action figures. DC, Marvel, Star Trek, Planet Of The Apes...
The toys that were so cool, they actually brought them back in a collector's edition, twenty years after the company went broke.
The toys that actually have their own section in Toyfare Magazine, despite the fact that no one manufactures them any more...
And so WHAT if Thor looked like a fruit?

Transformers G1 is the best, but when Beast Wars came out it kicked A$$! If you followed the story line you would of been amazed. It tied into G1 and the CG was amazing it grew on me. Now Armada is cool for the 5 yr olds but for me the Armada Comic series is way better. It comes no where near the cartoon. What Pat Lee did to the comic was amazing! Also the new G1 comics, and The War Within series is good. But nothing will ever beat G1 toy line I man come on they were meatl for god sake, now every thing is plastic.
Ok I am done ranting. Also I think way to much about Transformers!
Decepticons Forever! (Ravage in Beast Wars as he was about to die.)

Loved GI Joe, $2.99 got you 1 figure 10 bucks go you three. You dont have that anymore.
Transformers were cool, but rarely a toy made it a year and could not survive a fall down the steps. Cool toys, but super fragile.
Heman was awesome. Hordak was the man, in my heman universe he put Skeletor and Heman in their place. Are they gonna make a second generation Hordak? I would definately get him.

It's great to see the fogies living up their past. For me, cartoons and toys, in my younger days consisted of:
Star Wars,Transformers, G.I. Joe, and He-Man. That's it! Armada and Beast Wars have been embarrasments, to something that will forever be enshrined in my mind, as the best cartoon/toyline ever.
Mask was actually cool. I liked the vehicles, the size of the figures, and the cartoon was a good b-level toon for it's day. I mean, to compete with the big three (TF, Joe, and He-man), would've taken an act of God.
Now, just a few things. Living Tribunal> Glad to see you still remeber the Universal greeting. However, the final word is "Bong" not bam. ;)
four_winds, you are somewhat mistaken. Transformers were released after Go-Bots, but that was in the US. By the time Transformers hit the US, they were already a monster hit in Japan. Go-bots, was the original name given to Transformers, prior to their US, and consequently world-wide release.
He who metions Hordak, should get some props.!
Props to dmac7979!!
Hordak was He-man's equivalent to G.I. Joe's Serpentor. Then they had to screw Hordak up by having him be the enemy of She-ra (ugh!:p ), He-man's lost sister.

Back when Joe was a "real man" not the little weenie Heroclix and a half sized ones.
Only one Joe could fit in the capsule - you could have fit ten of the little ones in there and close the hatch with no effort.

I thought Gargoyles were the Gargoyles of our time? :p That was an amazing series. So dramatic, yet still had it's humor... I loved it. (And now Disney practically doesn't even acknowledge that they made it. When was the last time you saw *any* Gargoyles merchandise in a Disney store?) Easily one of my all time favorite series... right along with TF G1. And this new TMNT show is definitely a hit as far as I'm concerned.

Man this is a silly discussion.
Hmmm. . . then again maybe I need my ears cleaned out . . hmm where are those subtitles???
Hey, how about one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons, that they NEVER made a single figure for.......Dungeons and Dragons. I mean, Venger was MEGA COOL, in voice and look and behavior. Nobody messed with him......cept for Tiamat, who would have made a great large sized figure. You could have even had Hank fire real plastic "energy" arrows with the help of a trusty rubber band going down a plastic bow. Great show, great animation, great characters but alas, no toys in sight.

Nonetheless GREAT Discussion! And to think, I was holding on to my G-1 Megatron and Devastator toys in secret!
Devastator is great. I've gone mine stowed away for now.
I need a Megatron - Have a Prime. My pride is the 3 G1 jets, Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp... They were always my favorites when I was a kid, so they were among the first ones I looked for when I started picking some of the older ones up again.
To DTM they actually did make Dungeons and Dragons figures they just didnt make any figures of the characters from the cartoon show just from the game. No Venger or the party of kids but they made a butt load of creatures including Tiamat.
Really? I didnt know that. I remember a few, like Warduke and ....er....that Evil Wizard, and the Good Knight with the golden Hammer. Those were actually on the cartoon as well. Dont remember a Tiamat though, sounds cool. Shame they didnt make the main characters from the show though, Id definately have tried to get myself a Venger if they did. Great show, I wish I could get them all on DVD or VHS now. Loved the one where Eric opens the BOX O EVIL and unleashes this evil force whose power dwarfs even Dungeon Masters. I think thats the one where you find out Venger is DMs son too.

The Silver Hawks toys sucked, but the series was aight.
If you wanted a rocking series you had to watch Thundercats, Exo-Squad, and the really retro... uber-old school... original 'bad guys die' series... Johnny Quest!
Johhny Quest, eh... I still can't bring myself to watch that show.... but the parodies on Harvey Birdman were outstanding....

Galaxy rangers were awesome!!! Where else can you find a giant purple space hamster? I hope I remembered that right. A friend of mine has almost the entire series on VHS, but it's been years since I saw that.
If I recall, there was another sci-fi/western cartoon. All's I remember was a giant vehicle/robot named Ramrod that they used. I think it had a John Wayne sound-alike voice.

Kinda funny how the puny humans were able to subdue such strong, primal monsters to do their bidding. Especially since all they did was get themselves attacked every day. You'd think the animals would rebel after a while.

Well.... I think that something could be said for the toys kids can get today.
I have been pleased to see a variation on the original Mattel Thingmakers on sale the past few Christmases. Yes, children can still bake their own latex insects to terrorize their classmates with!
The Queasy-Bake Oven is a neat idea. When I was a kid, if I wanted to make my own cookies and cakes, I either had to interest Mom in the idea, or I had to con my little sister into breaking out her Easy-Bake toy. Now, boys can cook in their own rooms without looking ... well... (insert effeminate slur here).
...but Super-Articulated Action Figures are where it's at. Picked up a Superarticulated Ghost Rider this morning, with motorcycle, complete with flaming wheels and a comic packaged with the whole thing. And anyone who ever wanted a Hulk action figure, now is the time.
Man, the action figure market hasn't been THIS cool since the days of Mego!

Rolls over your neighbor's dog.
What's great for a snack
And fits on your back
It's log, log, log!
It's lo-og, lo-og,
It's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
It's lo-og, lo-og,
It's better than bad, it's good.
Everyone wants a log,
You're gonna love it, log
Come on and get your log,
Everyone needs a log...

3 cartoon series that didn't fly:
Bionic 6, Ewok Village (?) *It had C3P0 and R2D2 in it living with the Ewoks*, & Planet of the Apes
Has anyone mentioned "Thundarr (yep, two "r"s) the Barbarian"?
Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel??
Now that was a cartoon!
"Demon dogs"!

I remember Thundarr. Probably predates a lot of the people on the board though.
I remember Space Ghost, too. When he was just a poorly animated action cartoon. Not the poorly animated (but absolutely hilarious) talk show host.

I remember watching Space Ghost so long that I actually memerized all the different beams he had, and on which wristband too!
However that was a long time ago, I now only remember there being a freeze beam, a force beam, a fire beam, and something else that seemed to hit consistently like a jackhammer (unless it's the force beam I'm thinking about).
He doesn't use them often enough in his talk show. And he doesn't say which one he's using when he does it either. :-(

I don't remember him having a spank ray on the old show.

Does anyone else remember this old 3-D animated filem from the mid 80's- Starchaser: The legend of Orin. I remember seeing this thing in the theater and was totally blown away by it. The only scene I remeber well is where this kid is trying to escape this under-ground mine, and these leach type things attach to him and suck his blood and change color while they do it.
Anyone else??

Well, if we're all seeing how far the dial goes on our Way Back Machines, here's one that brings us back on topic for HCRealms.
The Mighty Heroes
Strong Man! Rope Man! Tornado Man! Diaper Man! Cuckoo Man! The theme song is probably already playing in the minds of the other old farts around here...
Now *those* were super heroes. If these guys, Marshal Law, and The Tick made it into IndyClix, I'd hand wash and wax both Jordan Weisman's and Monte Cook's cars - flying up to Washington to do it.
Probably a safe bet, sadly, given the toy licenses on The Tick are wrapped up pretty solid by other companies. Or that few people know or agree that any game about super heroes beating the snot out of each other *has* to have Marshal Law. Or that probably all of 2 other people actually remember or give a rat's posterior about the Mighty Heroes.

Hmm... nope. But I do remember seeing The Secret of Nimh as a child and not grasping what the secret was.
I remember The Fox and the Hound was one of the first movies I ever saw in the movie theater. I remember crying and closing my eyes when the fox was in that burning tree trunk surrounded by the hounds (I cried myself to sleep) and had to wait till I was a teenager before I could successfully track down a copy of that movie to see how it all ended.
I remember thoroughly enjoying the Fat Albert cartoons all voiced by Bill Cosby.
I remember every single one of the Charlie Brown movies. I wanted to jump through that screen to pinch Marcy for pulling that football away on that game winning kick for Charlie Brown. He gets less respect than Rodney Dangerfield.
I also remember a few movies that mixed animation with live action. One with Don Knotts turning into a fish. Mary Poppins. And the actress from Murder She Wrote traveling around on a flying bed with a magical bedpost.
G1 TFs, He-Man, Star Wars and G.I.Joe were my favorite toys from the 80's, but G.I.Joe always topped the cake.
It wasn't until the mid to late 90's before I actually started getting any sort of a real collection but the G.I.Joe line is just massive with incredible vehicles....7 1/2" Aircraft Carrier....Nuff Said!

People.....what about the timeless toy for all generations; the green army man! Go to the drug store, pop down a buck and get a sack of like 100 little green army men to maim, melt, blow up, and generally abuse in all kinds of fun and nasty ways!
As for today, there are cool toys though. Any of the figures produced by DC Direct are stunning, and also the new Marvel Legends line from Toy Biz sport some really awesome figs of many Marvel icons.
The new He-Man and GI Joe lines are cool too....but I don't know if they measure up to the original. Oh well.....could be wrong I guess.

Hey, I remeber the Sid and Marty Croft shows. Some of them anyway. Sigmund and the sea monsters and the Bugaloos (can sort of remember the theme song to that  )were two shows I liked to watch.
As for the other cartoons, I'd watch Mr. T. Shortly thereafter, there was a WWF cartoon also with Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. I was a Smurf watcher also. Spider-man and his Amazing Friends and that older Spider-man cartoon (Spider-man, Spider-man, does whatever a Spider can....). That one was cool cause you actually got to see the Hulk, Thor, Namor, and Iron Man in their own toons.
All that changed whe the Transformers mini series hit the screen though..........

Here are some more to throw in the mixx;
Robotech - All three series.
Go Bots - hahaha
Droids - Cartoon of Star Wars.
Also, Cartoon Network just announced a new series of Star Wars. It will be 21 or 22 Episodes after Episode II. The only problems I see the writers of Samuri Jack and Dexters Labatory... I am sure it will be cool I am just not a big fan of the writers.

FINALLY, AFTER 20 ODD YEARS, I'VE BEEN ABLE TO COMPLETE MY QUEST BY PURCHASING A REISSUE OF THE ULTIMATE BAD-GUY, MEGATRON!!!
New Year Megatron reissue (red) (http://www.tformers.com/download.php?op=getit&lid=61)
...and for under a $100 too!
Hey higher... how much you pay... I've been watching these ebays for a couple of days.... I'd rather get the Megatron in the purple box, but it seems the book boxes may be easier and cheaper to get...
Darned American laws!!! I wish we could've bought him here!

EBAY had the cheapest price ranging around $70 with a few hours left, but the $30 shipping and handling didn't make it worthwhile. It took me about 6 hours to find a place where I could purchase a non-knockoff model for $90 total (after S&H). If you'd like I'll send you the web address. They are definitely in high demand. There are more expensive models with blue to replace the red (but red is the original color), and there's also a more expensive limited edition black model.

Oh Dear Lord!!!
I just saw a 2 DVD set of the first two GI Joe miniseries on sale at a local store.
The descriptions on the back of the box did not give any story-line info, just the episode titles. Does anyone remember what the story-lines were about. I remember one of the first min-series was about the Weather Dominator weapon (I'm thinking it was the first, but am not sure).
Can someone help me fill in the gaps in this geriatric mind of mine??
Higher,
I sent a PM to you...

I don't remember the specifics, but each episode is going to follow these general guidlines. Cobra has a new plan to conquer the world. GI-JOE gets wind of it and attacks. The Cobra lackey's fire 1000 bullets each, but none of them ever hit the GI-JOE figures. It doesn't matter that the GI-JOE are standing out in the open and wave their comrades behind them to follow their lead.
The first wave is usually captured, but escape just about the time their rescuers are within earshot. They are able to spoil the plans within the last 3 seconds by blowing up 'something'. It doesn't matter if the only thing they ever blow up was a toilet, it'll trigger a chain reaction and the whole Cobra base will go up in smoke.
Hmm...
Now that I think about it, Cobra must have a LOT of money. Why didn't he just live the life of a playboy instead of trying to conquer it every night? It must've just been a hobby.
Wow, higher...
now that I know that..... it seems like half the battle....

And everyone miracalously jumped or parachuted out of there vehicle just before the big laser blast or missle hit it.
I think one of the more bizzare episodes was the one where there was this giant blob that keept eating everything and the only way to beat it was by throwing apples at it......
D a m n, those were good times....
