View Full Version : ROCK WARS 14 (GLEE): Round 1, Match 12
Okay boys and girls, here we have ourselves a rather unique Rock Wars, focusing on songs from the TV Show, Glee. If youre unaware of what this is, sorry I ain't explaining it to you here :), but I can almost guarantee that if you listen to the songs provided within, you won't be disappointed.
As always, these songs will be pitted against one another, Match by Match, Round by Round, weeding them all out until they get to the FINAL MATCH, which will have our two favorite Glee songs face against one another to see which one emerges as Grand Champion of our latest Rock Wars!
As always, this TOC should be voted using a very simple criteria, which song do YOU like more, which do YOU feel you would rather listen to, and which would YOU say is ultimately more deserving to move on.
Pretty basic really. Songs are matched up, you all vote on the one you like more, the winner goes to the Next Round, and we do this over and over again until the Rounds are Over. I do ask that you all give objective opinions and votes here, listening to All songs and arguments here within this TOC with an open mind, beginning to end, and base your honest votes from that.
So without further adieu, why dont we get started with the First of Many matches to come, in HCRs latest Rock Wars, Favorite Glee Song!
I now give you:
BUST A MOVE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRl1C6u9S04)

MAYBE THIS TIME (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylva20jAs50)

Maybe it's just that I'm finally getting Kristen Chenowith saturated, but I'm voting against her this time. Every once in a while I surprise myself in these things, voting against type. Give me a choice between show tune and rap and 99 times out of 100, I'll be picking the show tune. But these TOCs, and this show, has served to broaden my tastes a little. Not that I'm going to be haunting the Hip-Hop section of my local record store any time soon, but I am finding that there can be a few gems in any genre. Bust a Move

"You eat so much you split your pants"? Is that really what that moronic song says?
...sigh...I hate to be a hater, but....c'mon!
Maybe This Time I won't split my pants.
Booo!
Love both these songs but I can't vote against MAYBE THIS TIME.
Possibly my favorite from the show.
I have no problem with either one of these advancing, but I've gotta vote with the one I enjoyed more

Yo, Poindexter, BUST A MOVE
"You eat so much you split your pants"? Is that really what that moronic song says?

Heck yeah! Hell man, that song has some Classic rap lines in it, and from someone that Isnt a fan of the genre at all, Bust A Move has always been a fun, enjoyable and overall cool rap tune to me. :)
Now the Glee cast doesnt do as good as Young MC, but theirs is still a fun and enjoyable listen - the same CANNOT be said of Maybe This Time, my LEAST favorite song to listen to in this entire TOC (and proof that two greater singers Do Not sound great together).
A Very easy vote for Bust A Move to advance here, though really, against its competition, Id vote for Any of the others songs over it as well.
Maybe this time and this sucks that it is paired against Bust a Move.
Maybe this Time conveys such emotion....KC KNOCKS it out. Bust a move is generic.

There are a couple of songs that I have liked in the competition but this is the first time I found a song I thought they completely nailed.
I love Young MC, I grew up buying RapTrax Compilations and doing Drama class lipsynchs to Principals Office, but this sounds a lot like my Dad rapping with some loser friends occasional helping out in the chorus. Maybe This Time however was dead on, they got it just right and I would easily take it over any song I have heard thus far.

Maybe This Time almost won it for me. It was going great and I was pleased at the arrangement and the horn part but this chick gets to the end of the song and tries to go guttural and belt out the power. It's just not her thing and it all goes horribly wrong at that point. Then to top it off, she goes for that weird note to end the song, which I think she did on another tune, and it's just a huge fail at that point.
I had no plans on voting for Bust a Move but it wins by default as the lesser of two shi**y songs.

That weird note is KC knocking that song our of the park - that is her hitting the note that no one else has conveyed.
Not her thing? Are you kidding me? Kristin hasn't diva'ed ANY OTHER song in this contest except this one! She did an 80's ballad and a country song.
Maybe this time is possibly the BEST VERSION this song has ever seen and has been highly praised by critics. Bust a move has never been mentioned.
I know this tournament is what we would prefer listening to and I not surprised that a bunch of gamer guys are ignoring or even critiquing a broadway song sung with such emotional depth that the actor Chris Colfer was actually crying in the scene and the camera caught it, but to call that note weird and try to compare it to what Mercedes or Rachel has done is insulting to Ms. Chenowith.
This folks is why i will never do a Broadway TOC...

What do you mean youll never do a Broadway TOC, we ARE doing a Broadway TOC right after this one, and you were its biggest supporter.
As for Maybe This Time, Im sorry man, and I told you this when we were making up the song list, I really dont like this song, and skip thru it every time it comes up on my player (as VG says, its OK at first, then gets really off and annoying towards the end, as I dont feel their voices gel well and yes I dont like the last few notes either).

I think he's upset that a song he really likes is getting such a poor response. I can relate. I seem to recall one of my nominations in the one hit wonder TOC in which I was the only person who voted for it. Appalled I was.
Well sure, heck being disappointed that a song you really like is doing poorly in Rock Wars is all too normal really, Lord knows Ive been disappointed to frustrated to downright shocked that something I supported and thought would do well lost to something I thought was much inferior. It happens, it sucks but its a part of these TOCs, and always has been.

I actually really like songs from musicals, and am not a big fan of the original Bust A Move, but like a few others here I dont feel that the voices on Maybe This Time mixed well, and that last note sang on it killed the song for me (she sounded like she was being stabbed). So Bust A Move to advance in a lesser of two evils vote, for me.

Yes, and while I am somewhat disappointed by the number of "disapproving" votes, the "I don't really like any of these songs, but I have to vote for one of them" votes, I remind myself (and you, DTM) that they're the vocal minority. Most of us are thoroughly enjoying the songs and the TOC. Let's try not to let the sour grapes spoil our fun.
It's too bad the music is not to everyone's taste, but you can't please everyone all the time, especially if you try to branch out of the mainstream and do something a little different. I appreciate that they're loyal enough to these Rock Wars and big enough to participate, even if the songs aren't overall to their taste. I hope I can do the same if we ever get to a Rock Wars with a theme I'm not wild about. For them, just bear in mind that this is a short TOC, and you won't have to put up with it for too much longer.
Thanks buddy, though I dont think its a case of MSU not liking this TOC (actually hes one of its biggest supporters) over him being disappointed that a song he loved isnt doing as well as hed like (which again, is normal for Rock Wars really - All My Loving losing to Conquistador was my "Maybe This Time match" last TOC) :)

I hope I can do the same if we ever get to a Rock Wars with a theme I'm not wild about. I'll keep that in mind when I manage to convince DTM to do the favorite Led Zeppelin song TOC which of course, will have to be a 64 song TOC because of the sheer awesomeness of their catalogue.

Dont you just hate it when Captain America gives you the pouty puppy eyes. :p
I am sorry my friend, but it doesnt look like I Wanna Sex You Up made the final list.
As Im sure you know, there are more than 32 songs on the Glee soundtracks, and we nee to cut the season down to 32 songs for a TOC (as there wasnt enough for 64), so Magnito, MSU and myself went thru what was on the overall list and tried to put something together that was a good sublist of songs for a 32 song TOC that would be more to peoples likings and tastes, and that song didnt make the cut.
As for what did, please see below. :)

Well, doing a solo artist mini-TOC was an option in place of this Glee one, but only one person suggested or supported that (though Id go 32 songs per any solo artist, as we did with MJ).

Why wouldn't you do a Broadway TOC? Because a few of us don't like the way the Glee songs are manufactured? I think you misunderstand us when it comes to that. I've already picked out some show tunes for the next ToC and frankly I think your assessment of us as Gamer Guys is ignoring the depth of each person's musical tastes. I really could do the same to you on opera or jazz or fusion or metal or punk.
It kind of galls me too that you think you know this style of music better than everyone else, but I guarantee you, you don't. My opinions are my own and I like critiquing these songs, both the good AND the bad.
Y'know, I think I've heard you and a few others on here saying, "my tastes are just so different and no one ever likes my songs", but you're really saying is, I don't like the songs the rest of you like and wish you played in my musical sandbox more. Sorry bud, but that's not the way music goes. To each his own and all that.
Great, now I gotta go and listen to some South Pacific and wash this conversation right outta my hair. And speaking of Broadway, here's my friend's daughter singing from King and I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH80BSv889Y) in her high school music class.

I see it as two contrasting schools of Broadway vocals. You've got the original of Maybe This Time being sung by Liza (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3rkLRJ0m0k), where she doesn't have to reach for the ear-piercing octaves to get the emotion across. Because, hey, Liza. Then there's the more recent "louder is better" model which, as I've said, is common to all popular music over the past ten or fifteen years. This is encouraged by the American Idol school of singing, which promotes the shouty/shrieky crescendo so the vocalist can show off that, yes, just because you *can* hit a note, that does not mean that you *should* hit that note. As an aside, it was Patti Lupone's birthday a few days ago. Girl from Wicked wants to see how it's done old school, she's a good place to start.

I wasn't trying to single any one person out, certainly not MSU, who is, as you say, obviously a supporter of the TOC. Sorry if it came out that way. Just that as we veer from the mainstream just a little (or maybe it's too much into the mainstream?) people's likes and dislikes seem to be coming out a bit stronger and there seems to be a little tension in what are usually fun, even interesting and insightful discussions.

I just want to add that I totally get where MSU is coming from. I don't think I have ever had a song leave the first round, and it feels like sometimes people dismiss the less well known song out of hand. Obviously VelvetGuru is not one of these people at all, but it happens. I have just had to lower my expectation from "I hope everybody likes this and it wins" to "I hope one or two people who haven't heard this in the past dig this." And I hadn't heard this track before and I totally dug it, so mission accomplished.
Dude, the virtually unknown Conquistador took out The Beatles classic All My Loving, so dont tell me about HCR folk dismissing the less well known songs. :p
Personally, Im more than up for listening to new songs, though they are going to be at a slight disadvantage from the get go when going against an old favorite, which is to be expected really.
Heck, Im a Huge Phil Collins fan, have been since I was a teen, but after running how many RWs now, I know the general concensus is that HCR doesnt like Phil, some actually Hate him. Its frustrating that someone I enjoy musically so much has to struggle to beat songs that to me arent in the same league, but hey, personal preferences and all, everyones not going to see things the way I do, and vice versa (still try to get Phil or Genesis in as a nom each TOC though, even though its a miracle of they make it to Round 3). :)

Generally, I don't know most of the songs displayed in these threads. Also, the fact that I know them doesn't necessarily mean I like them. Hence, wether or not I already know a song doesn't give it an advantage.
(I discovered a lot of great songs thanks to these threads, by the way, and I'd like to thank everybody who nominates songs, and DTM too, of course, for running these)
Anyway, that's not the point. The posts above strenghten my resolution to not explain my votes. I don't want to hurt anybody because of my lack of taste (because, to be honest, I don't know much about music, nor do I understand it very well).

That's not really a fair comparison, I believe it has actually been scientifically proven that Phil Collins is terrible, even if the makers of Mall Music soundtracks everywhere disagree with those findings :p.

The best part of this for me is reading the responses both good and bad. I love hearing about why this person hates this or loves that, even if I think they are crazy for hating it. I almost like it as much when someone hates something I nominate as when they like it. If I nominate something I do so with the understanding that I have put it out there for discussion and I don't take it personally at all if someone isn't as blown away by something as I am.
Everyone's responses and reasons are equally valid, good or bad, so don't worry about throwing them out there.

What I meant was that I can't say much more than "I love this one", "don't like this one", "it was boring" or "can't decide between the two, so I'll just toss a coin". :p
I have a lot of trouble expressing the way I feel about music in general (and this has little to do with English not being my native language, I can't express it properly in French either).
(I stopped adding comments mostly because I felt it didn't bring anything to the discussion)
So, sorry, but I can't give you any valuable feedback about the songs. :nervous:

And that's one of the things I love about the Same Name Different Songs TOC. We all have such different and diverse tastes and I love when RE, Hail, Markrochip, Lensnart or any of the other guys writes something. I enjoy reading why they like a song or don't and it really doesn't matter whether I think a song is great while Lenny, Hail and RE all think it bites. It's a lot of fun to discover why people like a certain song and maybe I'll listen to it afterward and give it another chance.
In this Glee competition, I find I've been drawn to songs that feature choir style arrangements/vocals and not the solo or duet stylings. That's been my thing from the onset of the TOC and I hope to hear a few more songs that feature SATB, SSA or SAB voicings in the next couple matches.

Ahem! Conquistador is not virtually unknown. This song was considered to be so good Procul Harem had to release it two different times. Now I can field some very good virtually unknown songs for you to illustrate the trully V.U. if you want. I can find them almost as easily as pigs can find truffles.
Just let me know when you want them!
Er, no thanks bud, I think Ill take a pass on that.
I will never RUN a Broadway TOC because I would literally explode from trying to put what I think should be on the list versus what y'all would put on it.
Will I participate? Sure. Will I run one? Nope.
My music tastes differ VASTLY from most people who are posting here (no all female group making it into the final 4 in the 50s and 60s TOC is proof of that) and yes, I think Maybe This Time is the best song that Glee has put on (it is something my friends and I CONSTANTLY listen to when listening to Glee, versus never listening to Jump).
I am gay, I like my divas, I like my artists to belt out a note in the end, and I like my songs to be danceable. VASTLY different from y'all.
