Ummm, it's just a game?
Go, have fun, don't worry about winning at your first tournament. Just have fun, and learn. :)

I'll be the first (and definitely not the last)to tell your friend that pretty much all heroclix players welcome everybody young and old. And if he thinks his tactics are a little shaky then he just needs to go and ask all the players for help. I'll bet ya most if not all the players would be more than willing to help out. That's just one of the many aspects that makes it such a great game to play.
Try and convince him to just come to the venue and hang out for a little bit while a tourney is going on. Seeing first hand how casual it is should be a big help. Or if you get him to come at the very end of a tourney he can stick around and hopefully play a friendly game with some of the older players afterwords, proving first hand that they don't bite and are happy to help out with rules and strategy.
Assuming the venue's cool and the people really are casual about the game there, you should have no trouble getting him to join in the next time.

Actually when i first started playing it was kind of awkward for me because few adults played at the comic shop. However after 2 go arounds more adults entered and the playing field opened up. I'd tell your friend to relax, play it for fun, and maybe he'd attract some one from his age group to join in. Heck age means nothing in clix I have lost and one against various ages.
Have fun BJ.

I usually find BlackMail to usually get people properly motivated myself. :D

yeah when i first got into this game, i went to a tourney, finding it full of people like 25 yrs older than me. I was a little shy and scared, but after a while i got to know them and now they respect me as a usual clix player. Tell his not to be scared cuz all the people i know who play clix are nice

The longest journey begins with a single step.
These games (by which I mean collectable strategy games) really do tend to attract a large range of people. (Mostly male, unfortunately)
If I can jump to Star Trek (since that's what I have the most experience with ;-)) we had one regular ST:CCG player who must've been around 11 when he started coming to tournaments (he and his dad both played) and another of our younger players (around 15-16 I think) is currently number 2 in the world for ST:CCG second edition sealed.

I'm 36. The first game I played, I taught my 11 year old nephew how to play - and he kicked my butt. I COULD say that I was to focused on teaching him to play properly, but I'm sure that is not the case.
We played a couple more games and ended up in a draw.
The point to all this is that we had fun. It's a game about little plastic superheroes. The best part about playing *ahem* older folks, is that we know the histories of the characters. Your friend might make a couple of new friends and learn a little about his/her favorite characters along the way.
Enjoy!!

Just tell your friend this : My nephew is 7 years old and he loves to play heroclix (I swear he knows the dials and rules better than me and I'm 22!) Anyway, I took him to a tourney and the judge let him play, he took eighth out of twelve players in the tournament and earned the respect from everyone there. Point is if a seven year old can enter a tournament and place eighth playing against adults then your friend should have nothing to worry about.

Tell him it's not true that they'll tear his arms off if he loses the tournament.
It's just his fingers.
