Today I'm taking a look at two possible comic accurate versions of the
Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight.
First, here is a 400 points built from the pages of the Uncanny X-Men #120...

I'm a little confused... Snowbird's in there twice for the second lineup, and the build total's actually 508... is someone else supposed to be in the 2nd Snowbird's place???

While the teams may be comic accurate they lack effectiveness. How can you not play vet Puck?

Puck didn't pick up the super strength until late in the original run. My collection is incomplete at that point but I think it was around the #80-90 area. I'd still always pick up the E Puck over the rookie every time.

I'd also point out that Heather didn't don the maple leaf suit until the #30s, long after Jimmy's demise, so Guardian and Vindicator in the same team isn't comic accurate either, at least not until Guardian's ressurection. By which time Puck had picked up the super strength...

I'll try and get back soon with an idea for a #1 team.

I'm guessing that both the extra Snowbird and the U Vindicator are mistakes and that its supposed to be E Shaman and LE Walter Lankowski.

E Shaman + Brilliant Tactician 66 + 20
E Puck + Vault 42 + 3
R Snowbird 64

498 points.

The Vault on Puck is exceedingly characterful. I went for the R Aurora rather than her E version because the E has the ranged attack she didn't pick up until the late teens of the comics. Since Marrina actually had more impact on the fight in issue 1 than Puck I would say that this is actually more an issue 12 team, but I'd happily use it.

Sadly, I agree. It seems comic accuracy = total beat down. I think some of these teams can be better built for actual game play with a slight tweak against the accuracy part. Maybe try to balance it out a little more with accuracy still being a key component.

Ahh, but for some of us a comic accurate team vs another comic accurate team is fun, competitive or not. It is not always about winning, but recreating cool or favorite comic battles.

You were faster than I. I mostly play like that and I actually played Uncanny X-Men 120 a few years ago.It was a real fun game and balanced with the X-MEN of that issue not having many shooters.

I'm not a big comic buff, but I do enjoy the articles to give me ideas for teams.

However, the biggest complaint I have is that the "comic accurate" teams are always from ancient sets.

I would suggest for future articles that modern figures be used. Who would Morbius team-up with? Who has the Holiday Killer worked with?

While these articles may be accurate, the teams are horrible by no fault of the author. So why not choose a team with modern figs that stand a chance!

I must disagree. A lot of the figures used are from older sets, due to the lack of a newer version. Go back in the series to see that there were quite a few figures from newer sets involved.

I would suggest for future articles that modern figures be used. Who would Morbius team-up with? Who has the Holiday Killer worked with?

I didn't think I was complaining. I thought I said I enjoyed the articles.

As for writing an article, I started my post by confessing I was not a big comic buff so it would not make much sense for me to write an article about something I know next to nothing about.
My recommendation was to chose comic accurate teams based around figures from more current sets cause I would like to do fun, comic accurate teams involving figs that I just got or just came out.

To Dr. Morbius, I totally understand about the lack of remakes. My suggestion was merely to pick a fig or two from a current set and base the article around them. As to who The Holiday Killer is... I have no idea! I was hoping you could tell me! But it is DC so that would explain it! I look forward to the Morbius article.

This is Heather Hudson.

As for James himself, he was Weapon Alpha when he first tried to bring Wolverine back solo, because he accidentally wounded Moira MacTaggert he started to use the Vindicator codename, and was Vindicator when he tried to bring Wolverine back with Alpha Flight, and then became Guardian much later. And then a lot of other codenames came and went.

I've played Alpha Flight on a few occasions. Usually I go for the issue #1 lineup (Guardian, Sasquatch, Shaman, Snowbird, Marrina, Puck, Aurora & Northstar; 600 points IIRC), but there was also a time that I played every Alpha Flight character available (IE: Both Guardian *and* Vindicator along with Box, Wildheart and Diamond Lil at 900 points). Mixed results both times.

Some tips for Alpha Flight teams:
- Don't bother with any Snowbird besides the Rookie unless you're trying to fill points. She's worthless and overcosted.

- If you can get the LE Jeanne-Marie Baubier, use it. She's awesome.

- Don't be afraid to use the Experienced Puck. Where he's lacking Super Strength, he'll have Combat Reflexes getting an 18 defense.

On feats: Besides the ATA, I recommend...
- E Shaman with Brilliant Tactician & Coordination. With such low attacks, his team is going to need every modifier it can get. That, the Alpha Flight ATA, and maybe Assembled if you can get the BFC into play.

- U Vindicator with Inspiring Command. She'll arguably be the highest point character on your team, so giving your other characters actions without having them take damage will be really useful.

Here is the last Alpha Flight team I played (499 points):

125 Box
104 U Vindicator
+15 Inspiring Command
66 E Shaman
66 LE Jeanne-Marie Beaubier
61 E Northstar
57 V Puck
+5 Unstoppable

+ 6x0 Alpha Flight

Some general comments, applicable to many Alpha Flight teams:

Inspiring Command is a great way to get the most out of HSS figures (Northstar, Aurora) and Barrier figures (Shaman) plus moving others. There are only a few figures that have it (and not for long) but it can truly make a difference...especially if you win map choice and can use Barrier to prevent a first strike against you. Mind that Box cannot be "Inspired" by other teammates.

With two HSS figures, Armor Piercing can be useful, but mind the 10% feat rule.

I play a ton of Alpha Flight, and I wish we had large parts of the roster, (Windshear, Bochs, Purple Girl, Nemesis, Manikin, Goblyn, Witchfire, Talisman, Wyre, the entire 3rd series roster...)

Alpha Flight 14# (they were all in the issue, even if they weren't working together, Alpha actually makes it really hard as they split their roster over and over again.)

Namor (SI) 150
V Puck 58
E Marrina 37
LE Jeanne Marie Beaubier 66
E Shaman 66
Total: 377

I'd normally fill out with Monster Hunter on Puck or Namor, and ICWO, representing Heather's influence on Puck and Jeanne-Marie. Of course, use the Alpha Flight TA. Before keywording I ran these type of Alpha teams all the time. (Namor and Marrina made lots of cross appearances during their marriage, even after for Namor and coincidentally I have full runs of early 90's Namor, and Alpha Flight.)

For something a bit themier Alpha Flight 107-109: World Tour

U Vindicator 104
E Wildheart 50
E Northstar 61
Jeanne Marie Beaubier 66
Walter Langkowski 93
Total: 374.
Alpha Flight the team, Armor Piercing on Northstar and Vindicator, Double Time on Walter.

or a different take on a late issue roster; Alph Flight #103:

U Vindicator 104
E Northstar 61
E Wildheart 50
LE Walter Langkowski 93
Box 125
V Diamond Lil 60
Total 493. Double Time on Walter, Alpha Flight the team obviously.

Pretty much anything else requires subs, sadly, as Beta Flight, Wyre, and Windshear were pretty important parts of the series.

Or go with the veterans of Alpha Flight, 2nd series #1!

V Vindicator 123
U Vindicator 104
Box 125
LE Walter Langkowski 93
V Puck 57
Total 482.
Alpha Flight everyone. Slap Double Time on Walter, Endurance on V Vindicator, and Protected on someone.

E Northstar 61
Jeanne Marie Beaubier 66
Walter Langkowski 93
Total: 374.
Alpha Flight the team, Armor Piercing on Northstar and Vindicator, Double Time on Walter.

or a different take on a late issue roster; Alph Flight #103:

U Vindicator 104
E Northstar 61
E Wildheart 50
LE Walter Langkowski 93
Box 125
V Diamond Lil 60
Total 493. Double Time on Walter, Alpha Flight the team obviously.

Pretty much anything else requires subs, sadly, as Beta Flight, Wyre, and Windshear were pretty important parts of the series.

Or go with the veterans of Alpha Flight, 2nd series #1!

V Vindicator 123
U Vindicator 104
Box 125
LE Walter Langkowski 93
V Puck 57
Total 482.
Alpha Flight everyone. Slap Double Time on Walter, Endurance on V Vindicator, and Protected on someone.

Thanks for those. I'm missing large chunks of the later series, so knowing who goes with who is invaluable.

As far as the bit I've bolded goes, who would make good substitutes for our missing Alphans?

I like http://www.alphaflight.net/ for AF info when my brain comes up short.

I play a ton of Alpha Flight, and I wish we had large parts of the roster, (Windshear, Bochs, Purple Girl, Nemesis, Manikin, Goblyn, Witchfire, Talisman, Wyre, the entire 3rd series roster...)

Lets have WK start with Bochs and Windshear as they are really all that is missing from the 1st AF run.

Some of the original Beta and Gamma Flight members would be good for some filler. Smart Alex etc...

I loved the 3rd Series roster and would like to see them made after Lillith and Serpent Society

If you're patient with making mods, you can turn the Wingless Wizard into Smart Alec pretty easily.

I used the Mad Thinker's dial (which I still love to this day).

Apeman- pretty much any cheap brick ever
Witchfire- Magik
Bochs- Box. Iron Man, War Machine, Crimson Dynamo
Windshear- The Mach pieces
Wyre- Omega Red, HoM Wolverine, Colonel Logan

You should look at getting the later first series issues from your local quarter bin, the stuff from around #100 on was much better than some of the dreck we got after Byrne left the title.

I love Comic Accurate as an idea, but almost never in practice - if you're playing Alpha Flight you have to play Sasquatch, and if you have to play a Sasquatch, playing anything other than the LE is foolishness. And I feel the same way about Vindicator/Guardian and it's LE. They're the only ones that give you a cost effective, comic accurate portrayal of the characters (IMO). Shuttle pretty much nailed the team I'd use.

U James MDonald Hudson 99
R Aurora 50
E Shaman + Brilliant Tactician 66 + 20
E Puck + Vault 42 + 3
R Snowbird 64
E Northstar 61
U Walt Langkowski 93

498 points.

Don't forget your Alpha Flight ATA, kids. The +2 to attack (with BT and the ATA) makes them almost formidable.

PS: She doesn't have the keyword, but V Marrina is a shocker against almost any opponent. Those 2nd, 3rd, 4th clicks are fun for 55 pts.

V Vindicator is money actually, especially with Endurance. The extra 2 range and 1 damage is totally worth it. Especially with the middial perplex. I ran over people so many times with him, my entire venue went out looking for the piece.

With AF, ICWO, and Endurance you are looking at a piece with 15 swing, 11 attack, 5 damage and can freely push for 138 points. He's just nasty.

I prefer the opening SS and lower cost on the LE Mac myself, but I have used the V before. I agree with starr226 though, there is only one real choice for Sasquatch and that's a shame (and why I think we so need a new one). I'm tempted to mod one on to a grey-skin Hulk dial from Mutations and Monsters which is closer to what a Sasquatch dial should be like (although puny Banner stats don't accurately represent a former Packer).

Does anybody use Tanaraq?
I've had a lot of success with him.
Then again, I haven't used him since late 2008, probably...

Actually, I don't know how much success I've had with him, but I sure have used him a lot...

I think R Elongated Man is a better fit for Smart Alec. Leap/Climb & Plasticity to represent his knowing where and how to go (or stop you).

Super-Senses and Incap work well with this, too. And Prob makes sense with his powers of perception. The TA is Avengers, too (sort of). 0 range.

Thinker isn't bad but the 8 range and Mind Control don't work for me.

I love Tanaraq as a piece but he's one of the couple Alpha Flight enemies we have in clix form, (the others being Marrina, Attuma, the Wrecking Crew, Omega Flighters Wild Child and Diamond Lil, and the X-men...)

I'd love a Master of The World, Headlok, Omega Flight, Plodex generic, Gilded Lily, Dreamqueen, Deadly Ernest, Pink Pearl, and the other Great Beasts...

At least if they gave us an original-style Box we could use that as an Alphan and an Omegan. :)

Not sure a Pink Pearl would be all that effective or beloved by anyone except hardcore Alpha fans. But a Deadly Earnest with almost full dial Steal Energy/Poison would be cool.

But you could use her as a sub for Big Bertha! Or the Blob!

Just think of the crazy barrier powers they could give The Master...

Elongated Man is pretty good! Good idea, Tyro!
But I like the late dial outwit and soft defense of Mad Thinker a bit better for comic accuracy still.

And zyxba, I tend to use Tanraq AS Sasquatch when I'm playing AF in larger games. He just feels like the most accurate representation of Sasquatch (to me), who is pretty dang tough in the Marvel Universe.
