I know I have heard the answer to this, but it seems to come up fairly often at our venue, and we always seem to forget which way it is.

Do powers that are gained through a SP, continue their effect when you take damage and move onto the same power actually printed on the dial?

Examples: You have a SP that grants the use of Outwit, and use it, then you take damage and move onto regular Outwit. Is the power still countered that you Outwitted?

You have a SP that grants the usage of Super Strength. You take damage and move onto a regular SS click. Do you still carry the object you are carrying, or is it dropped?

Also, would there be a difference between a SP that gives the use of something and one that gives possession?

Thanks for the help!

No, they don't. One of the most prominent examples came up with Avengers Silver Surfer. He has a special power that lets him use Hypersonic Speed, but only make ranged attacks followed by standard Hypersonic Speed. If he makes an attack and gets a critical miss while using the special Hypersonic Speed and it changes to standard Hypersonic Speed, he would not be able to continue his movement after the attack because it's a different power.

With special Outwit to standard Outwit, the power would no longer be countered. You could still counter the power again with standard Outwit if it's still your turn when the change happens.

With special Super Strength to standard Super Strength, the object is dropped.

The only difference between a special power that lets a character use a power and gives a character possession of a power is that giving possession of a power allows the power to be countered individually rather than having to counter the special power to get rid of it. A power that can be used can only be countered by countering the power or ability that allows use of the power.

For your question, use and possess don't change how the character would be affected.

Thanks for the reply, Adam. So, you would drop an object after clicking from a SP to regular SS?

Edit: Answered. Thanks!

With a possessed power, isn't it considered to be "on the dial"?

If you had a SP that grants possession of Super Strength, and clicked to regular SS, it seems like you would still carry the object.

All of the above is correct except what I bolded. The Objects section of the rulebook makes it clear that an object is dropped when a character can no longer use super strength. Going from standard to special super strength never puts the character in a state where he cannot use super strength, so the object is not dropped.

Well, the rules are rules until the rules say they're not the rules in which case they're more actual guidelines than rules.
