View Full Version : Outwit & positioning question (NOT Outwitting B2B...) :)

Hi all,

Here's a question for you. I know Outwit isn't technically an attack, but it leads to an interesting situation at times.

I had a character on a small 2X2 elevated rooftop last night, and my opponent moved his Outwitter to the rooftop as well, B2B with my guy. He then proceeded to Outwit someone else below him on the ground. Which suddenly got me to thinking: since you can't ranged-attack a distant enemy if you're based with *another* enemy, shouldn't Outwit work this way too? There doesn't seem to be anything in the rules that disallows this, but somehow it doesn't seem "right" that someone can use Outwit on a guy 10 squares away when there's a Solomon Grundy vet sitting next to him. :) I'm not a newbie, in fact I've been playing for a long time now, but that just struck me as weird last night...

Am I missing some obscure ruling, or is that indeed doable if not exactly right?

Thanks in advance...

alrighty... two things here...

When you were on the Elevated Blocking Terrain, and your opponent was on the Elevated terrain in a square next to you...

Neither of you are considered adjacent to the other because of the blocking terrain line between you (even though you are both on the same elevation).

Outwit has no such restrictions like Ranged Combat would.

As long as the Outwitter has Line of Fire and the target is within 10 squares, then the target can be Outwitted (even if there is a different opopsing figure B2B).

Your statement about it not being a ranged attack is the key. It just happens to be a superpower that is restricted by range and line of sight. Since it is not an attack, the btb figure is irrelevant.

There is nothing in the rules to require a figure with outwit to use it exclusively against an enemy figure that is adjacent. You can use it on any target that is within the 10 square range and to which your figure has LOF. As for whether or not it makes sense, I'm not the person to answer that, I loathe Outwit as a power in general. :D

Tsannik, to answer your question, there was no blocking line between us. We were on the same 2X2 elevated terrain.

A couple of things occur to me here:

1) This probably should have gone in the "General Discussion" area, since it's probably more a philosophical question about Outwit... I know what the rules say to the letter... guess I got ahead of myself... but it's good to have confirmation on it.

2) YOU GUYS ROCK on this board. I had barely hit "Submit" when I got an email back that there had been a reply - at which point I found not one, but FOUR responses.

I love you all with the love of a man for a fine cigar. :D
