Thank you to Draddog and HCRealms for putting up an area for Clix web tools and projects. Great idea!
I have added a HELP file, click on Help on the main screen for the tips I have listed in this thread.
Well, this is my custom dial database and dial maker. There is only one major bug. The vector dial prints out full screen. This bums me out alot. It is done in Flash and is dynamically generated from the character record in the database. If you are logged in and select Add New it will create a hero right now it inserts a record called Generic Hero, just change the name and any info you would like. I certainly don't mind people adding figs. If I find that they aren't appropriate I may remove them. I prefer to keep this to figs that aren't in comics today. But if you have something you want to share, go for it. There is no picture uploader yet. I put the picture of one of my figs in using ftp. PM me if you want to put a picture of your fig with your mod.
PLEASE MAKE PLAYABLE DIALS. If I find a dial that is just a bunch of zeros. I will set it to private. I don't mind funny figs, I think there are several that are funny. But if they have stats over 20 or no stats. They will be removed from public view. I am looking to create a database where people can go to get ideas for figs. REALISTIC dials. I also would like to see descriptions on ALL the figs. I know I have to put some on some of mine still, but there are some great figs in there that I don't understand what the character is.
If anyone knows anyway to get the dial to print out correctly please let me know. I have exausted all of my own knowledge as well as that of the flashkit community.
I am adding this because there are several dials created that are private, I just want to make sure they were meant to be.
About Dial Privacy: All dials that are created start out as private. If you want them to be viewed by the public you have to uncheck the "private:" box in the edit mode. In "View Mode" any of your dials that are private will show up (only for you) as red. Any public records are listed in yellow. Any record that is private is not going to be displayed on the list to anyone but the owner.
Here is a list of things I need to do with it:
Add a point generator (will take some time, maybe a few weeks)
Fix the dial maker to print correctly (See work around below)
*FIXED* Add a delete function (a little too worried about abuse until permissions model is done)
*DONE* Adding permissions model. (add/edit/delete privlages)
Adding image linking for adding full path to off site image. (mod display)
I may or may not add a file upload for uploading custom pics... a little worried about abuse based on some of the figs I have cleaned up...
NOTE: I am only developing for IE version 5.5 + it may or may not work in anything else.
It's beautiful. Sorry I can't help you further. What very little I know is probably beneath you. :D
What part is not working?
No dial top?
And you have not incorporated the point cost calculator? All that work and you couldn't do an easy thing like that :p
Just kidding, I don't know if it could be done, but it would be cool

If you click on "View Dial" on the first page a very beautifully filled in dial comes up. If you click on print in the dial box it prints a full screen dial. A VERY NICE full screen dial. But if it was working correctly it would print a non-pixelated dial at the correct size. If you click Print on your web browser you are getting a bitmap of the vector so the dial is not clear. I make vector dials at home using flash and they print as clear as the real deal (from the creation window, not from the swf). And this was supposed to do the same.

Very Cool I really enjoyed making Voodoo Child. Would be cool if you could add your own team names, just for the fun on it. Maybe also you could have a password to characters. But then again I know nothing of how hard stuff like that is to do so don't listen to me.
urlmaker
02/21/2003, 15:59
Thanks, I have alot of fun with it. (obviously) I like the Infinity Gems Thanos also. I like the Vodoo Child write up (I hope you don't mind, I attached your tag to it). One of the cool concepts I have for this tool is upgradable figs. I am hoping this breaks the RPG barrier.
Teams are going to be easy. They are already databased, it is something I planned on doing. The idea of password protecting is becoming more and more appealing. I have already had "user edits" of my figs. (I have a backup, I really don't care, it is just annoying)
I would prefer people not add in figs like "Wad Launcher" just because I want to actually be able to use this thing for people I know. I really don't mind silly ones... Mr. Yuck is one of mine. Just not lewd (and I do know that is subjective, but use MY best judgment).
USER TIP: When the URL comes back from an update you can see the fig ID at the end of the string looks like this "?Figs=31" Append this to the end of the main url like this http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?Figs=31 and you have a link to your fig so you can show people.
More Tips: When you don't put stat data into any of the 4 stats in one column and update the record, that column is deleted. The same thing will happen with non-numeric data. (if you put a "D" or other letter in the field that column will be gone when you update)

Printing work around: Not the best solution it requires some kind of image software.
·Click on View Dial a large dial will display.
·Click on Alt-Print Screen (Capture Image)
·Create a new image with 1000 pixel per inch resolution.
·Paste the screen capture.
·Crop to as close to the dial as you can get. (Make sure that your proportions are equal using set canvas size)
·Set Image size: Reduce image print size to 1.1 inches.
This process only takes about 1 or 2 minutes. I printed out a bunch of dials last night before a game. The 1000 pixel per inch will create large image sizes, I don't even bother saving them since it doesn't take too long to print a new one off the web site.
We are not worthy...
Great work.
Well done.
VERY impressive.

i just made a unique deadpool. i looked at some of the others, and it didn't look like they were too realistic. i tried to keep mine to what i really thought deadpool would be like but keep in mind, i'm really just a reg comic fan. don't know everything. tell me what you think of my deadpool, thanks. be fair! if only the site printed out the dials perfectly with the right stats.

I'm unsure exactly how does one capture the image?
Alt-Print Screen?? These two buttons do not do anything (for me)
And why can't I right clix and copy? :(
Please help!
P.S. LOVE your program! You have just created the coolest add-on for this game!

I am glad that people enjoy the program.
IndyClixxer: Alt + Print Screen at the same time just captures the data that is in the current window. It doesn't DO anything that is noticable. When you go into a program like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop and use the paste function the selected screen will be pasted into the program. You then crop the dial out using that software and set the print size. (make sure you change the PRINT SIZE and give it like 1000 pixels per inch of resolution this will keep the image crisp when you print) Also print at 600 dpi if you have the capability. If properly cropped (tight to the dial) the print size is 1.1 inch at the resolutions mentioned above. The reason you can't just right click and copy is this is not an image, it is a flash movie and it has different rules then images do. Just the way it is. I HOPE I can fix the printing issues soon, but this workaround may be it for a while.

(snif) I told myself I wouldn't cry... Thanks again guys. The Login system is quickly approaching (maybe by the end of tomorrow) so no more worries about people modding your mods. The way I am going to do this is allow the ability for the creator to select if they would like the custom to be "publicly viewed" or "private". Private records will not show to the big list that way you can tweek your record until you are ready to have it viewed. Private records will still be linkable though. If you want to show your buddies or even post it here but still don't want it on the browse list you can append your figs=# to the end of the main URL and this will call the dial directly. If this goes well I may have to add some search fields...
I am also considering two new features, a team maker, for putting in custom team affiliations and figure catagories to break up the list a bit. Catagories I am considering are, Marvel, DC, Indy, Movie and RPG Conversions (as my Loose Cannons figs are including Upload, converted from the old DC system) and HeroClix RPG (created soley for HeroClix RPG) and possibly a comedy catagory for creating yourself, your brother, or other oddball characters like Freakazoid and the such.
The theory for the HeroClix RPG is that you have an "Upgradable" dial. And you can come back to the generator and build onto your fig after gaining experience. You can even expand on this by capturing R/E/V versions of your custom figs after playing a while.

Ok, I have added a user login. This is just so that you can maintain your own dials without other users modification (and so I can keep my own intact, poor Upload has been overwritten 4 times.) I also made it easy so that while you are viewing dials your dials are highlighted for you. You can go into any or YOUR dials and edit them. You can also add new dials from the view screen. If you create a new dial and don't edit it, then add another new dial it will just take you to your unedited dial. (this will save space from unedited dials) I am working on the privacy feature right now. When you create a new dial it is automatically private and doesn't show on the list to other people, although you can see all of your dials regardless of privacy level. You can also link to a private dial without making it public. It will show on the list as long as the ?figs=# is in the url. When I fix the privacy setting I will also add the fig_id to the edit screen so that you can easily create the links.
I also added your user name to the bottom of the fig screen so if a dial has a user associated to it there will be a "By:" line at the bottom, below the description. You can remove By lines in the description if you want to.
If you create a user and want to get your dials associated to you, you can PM me or post. You must go and create a user though FIRST. If you haven't done it yet, you can Go Here (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/create_user.cfm). There may be intermitant problems as I update the site. I think I got all the bugs from the user system I put in last night. Please let me know if you run into bugs or system outages so I can inform my ISP.

I've just uploaded my LE X-Factor:
The only thing I don't like is the PB on Scott Summers. For one thing you still can't use it for a running shot. Also, PB should only be used to simulate, Mental, Mystical, or any attack that completely circumvents the use of any natural or technological armors. I really don't think that Cyclops can do that. That is cheesing out the power. There ARE other effects that you can simulate with PB like disintigration or an energy that is "other worldly" (anything with the word quantum, or cosmic in it) But even those can usually be taken care of with RCE. ;)

I can't access my Thanos. I put him in a few days ago and now it won't let me open him, here is the message I get;

I am sure it will work again if you try in a moment.
OR
Your login has expired and you are trying to do something technical.
Try loging in again from Here If that doesn't work see the first possibility. Either way it isn't my fault, they told me it was fixed. "
But, whoever you were on when you click the link to Thanos you can click veiw dail and you can still see Thano's dial.

02/26/2003, 11:49
Darkhawk_76, you have your Thanos now. Since last time you were in the system I have added a user system. The dials are not publicly editable now. Only you can edit your dial. But the whole world can view it. I have associated your Thanos to your user. If anyone else has a dial that they need attached to their user let me know. The error you got was trying to pull up the edit mode with a dial that you couldn't access. So try again now and it will be listed in your edit mode.
I have been going back and adding information to the previous posts so I am not padding the amount of URLMaker posts out. Some of the updates are on the first page. There are tips throughout. I will try to go through at some point and consolidate them to one post.
I see Psychic Blast simulating the fine control Cyke has over his blasts, being able to hit people in "sensitive spots".

Okay, just did one myself... the "Smart Hulk", as he was during his Pantheon Days. I envision this version wearing the Pantheon bodysuit, and maybe wearing fuzzy bunny slippers. ^_^
And the points were calculated with that Visual Basic dialmaker, so don't yell at me "But he's only two points more than his cousin!".... I realize that I would have probably made him more like about 135 points, or more, were I making that fig to actually bring to a tabletop battle...

I've started using the site to finally get my Star Wars clix done. I've gotten REV Luke Skywalker, and Unique Princess Leia done so far. I was working on them before, but it was rough going. I don't have Adobe Illustrator, and if I did, I still wouldn't know how to use it! I've discovered that if I print the dial at 19% on my printer, it's the perfect size!
If you're interested in Star Wars clix, I've got tons of dial stats already designed. Now all I've got to do is get them into the database.

Wyldstaar, I love the Star Wars figs. Do you have any figs done for any of these? I will post the picture next to the stats if you have them. Let me know.
I have put in the stats for Pootie Tang and the rest of his crew: Trucky, JB, Lacey and Biggie Shorty. Their total points comes in at exactly 200 points, if anyone plays them, let me know how they do!

BTW, ealier you mentioned the possibility of integrating one of the point value spreadsheets into your site. Has there been any progress on this front so far? No pressure mind you. I'm just curious. Your site as it stands now is a godsend.
Also, I really like the idea of dividing up the figures into categories. It would certainly allow searching for a certain clix a lot easier. If you decide to do a Star Wars category, is there any possibility of adding my custom Team Abilities? It's a longshot I know, but it can't hurt to ask, right?

I didn't give him Force Blast because I've never seen Yoda use it. I have seen him use Flurry.
I didn't give Yoda a combo of Flurry and CCE because you can't use Flurry and CCE together. Neither CCE or RCE can be used in conjuction with another super power.
I didn't give Yoda Telekinesis because a Jedi may not use the Force to attack. Only Sith may use the Force to attack.
Having Mind Control is fine, but a Jedi must be carefull in this regard. If you want to use Mind Control to force an enemy to move away from you, that's fine. To use Mind Control to force an enemy to attack another would again be an attribute of the Dark Side.
On the whole, I like your version of Yoda. As I said, I'd dump the Telekinesis for accuracy. Aside from that it's quite good. I'll stick with mine either way. :D

It is definately going to be a while before I even think about the 6 inch fig dials. My next task is to add in Retardog's point formula into the dial maker. Then I am going to add a custom team tool. Then I am going to add fig search/sorting by catagory. After that I may start to think about the large dials. I will give you advice though.
Scan in the sentinel dial. If you don't have a scanner then that will be difficult. Ask someone to scan it for you. You then use this image as the bottom layer in your graphics program and build all of your stats on the layers above. Once you have everything aligned get rid of the original dial layer. If you don't have a graphics program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, download one. JASC.com has thier Paint Shop Pro avail for a 60 day trial. Plenty of time to do your Galactus dial. Good luck.

Okay, just added, for a little self-aggrandizement, the dial I see for my Avatar... basic concept, he can pull any sort of weapon he wants from his trenchcoat (though they're not really said weapons, but solidified life-force). He also has somewhat super-human agility, thus his Defense. He normally starts off bouncing around shooting, then just says "Heck wit' it", then gets stuck in slashing away with bladed implements. When he starts getting really hurt, he starts to use his innate cunning, thus Outwit towards the end of the dial.
Any opinions? Would this character be one you would use in a game of Clix if it was an 'Official Marvel Character' ?

I'm pleased to hear that the point formula is getting first priority urlmaker! I'm curious though. Once it has been added, will it automatically alter the point values of previously made dials, or will we be required to do something extra, such as re-edit? Either way it's fine with me, of course. I also greatly appreciate the plans for adding a custom team ability section. By the time you're done, your site will be THE place to go for custom dials. (Well I suppose it is that already, but you know what I mean!)

It is actually going to be done in the edit process. It will fill in the Text Box for points as you go. I may have a checkbox to turn off autofilling the points. Haven't gotten far on it yet though, darn work is keeping me from playing...

Thanx for the info urlmaker.
trust7, here's what I did before I had the advantage of Dial Maker. Like you, I'm totally in the dark when it comes to illustrator/photoshop programs. Microsoft Word however, was very simple. I used the highlight function to create the stats I wanted. They weren't rotated of course, so I had to cut out each set of stats and glue them onto a dial. Luckily, you don't have to go to that much trouble. All you have to do is make a private dial that has the stats you need on it at the Dial Maker site. Then cut and paste those onto the large scale dial you wish to use. It will take a bit more time and patience, but it will still look professional.
This is going to require a LOT of playtesting so I am not doing this once, I need a solution that I can reprint/redo the stats a few times over, if I was going to do it once only that would be fine. help ?

Just some advice trust7, you may want to move this to a different thread to get more visibility. I can't fix the dial maker to do 6 inch base dials without alot of work. But as far as this discussion goes it no longer has to to with this thread.
aight.
But you keep saying 6inch dial, the 20click dial is only about 2.5-3"'s across from what I can tell what do you mean 6" ?

Urlmaker,
You are the Gringo Supremo!!!
What a great HC tool!!
Using the screen capture, and importing into Word works great. I can now make my "Hockey Mascot" team :cheeky:
The only thing it needs, would be a dial TOP generator, with points, range, targets, name, team, rank, and number (or creator).
Soon, I shall have the Billings Bulls stomping on the Bozeman Icedogs, mwooooaaahahahahaaaa :cross-eye
Good work, Urlmaker!!!!!!!
The fist of tesla dial I am working with is indeed 20clicks NOT 26 like the sentinel the sentinels base is TOO small so I had to use one of the very wide bases to fit galactus and just use the two outside 20 click dials to equal 40 clicks so at this time I still do not have the ability to print these, ;*(

Url, just made a Killer Frost & I'm having problems printing the dial, When I view the dial, all the stats are wrong and also my Killer Frost is showing private. When I try to edit, there is no private box, the word PRIVATE is there though. I am using Netscape rather than explorer. Is this my problem?

Wyldstaar, Actually alphabetical is part of catagorized dials. Catagories are coming VERY soon, possibly tonight. I decided to work on that before doing points formula. Partially because it will take less time and partially because there are well over 500 dials in there now. The down side is that people are not getting the "Private" setting or they just don't want to show thier stuff. I have over 200 private dials in the database. I am seriously thinking about just making any good dials public. There is alot of good work in there that no one is seeing.
okiedokie, I would imagine Netscape being a problem. I honestly never tried it. It has some heavy javascript and that stuff often requires different calls for IE and Netscape. I didn't do any of the Netscape type calls. So I would bet it doesn't work properly. I may eventually make it cross browser compatible. But that just seems like I am at work and not just playing. ;)

Dinoman, you are right, I will put that upgrade in soon since it is a quick fix.
Eric Qel-Droma, thanks for the compliments, the colors are databased so it is an easy fix that will require no code change. I just thought that purple dial colors were black text. I will check against the original dials and make any adjustments tonight.
okiedokie, thanks for your compliments and no donations are required. I love doing this stuff and just want to see a bunch of happy clix makers out there. (like me!)
Thanks all,
The dial maker maker...

Urlmaker, do you have any idea why I cannot do anything with your site? If I click on create new user, it doesn't do anything. I have been wanting to do my dials, but can't get it to work.

Well, if you are using IE 5.5 or above (it is all I support because it is all I use) then there should be no problems. If you are using Netscape or AOL internal browser then just try to open it in IE and see if it works. If you are on a computer that doesn't have/support IE then I would download one of the spreadsheets from retardog or another site in the projects folder. The reason I only support IE is I don't have time to recode for all of the different browser types. If you ARE using IE and you are having problems then either your cookies or your JavaScript abilities are turned off. Almost every site, including HC realms uses some level of JavaScript and Cookies. So if they are off, turn em on. (if you can't because you are on a work computer, HEY why are you playing at work?);)

Sshhhhhh! Don't tell ;)
I am on IE, but I am not sure what version. I just really want to print the dials I have for a few customs so my figs can have bases. But alas I cannot.

Url,
How can I post a photo of the mod that goes with the dial? Is the best way to put a link in the description?
urlmaker
03/31/2003, 17:10
okiedokie, I really want to just put a url link field that will display the image next to the dial just like the HCRealms does, and just like the Upload dial does that is on the initial screen. It would be a very easy task to put in image linking. A difficult decision. I am worried about abuse it could get and the kinds of images that could get linked to. I will likely throw caution to the wind and just try it this week. If I get any bad images that get linked in I will just remove the functionality. Or maybe I could just "grant user permission" to certain dial makers who have been doing some awesome work. (there are alot) For now, you can post it in the description. Actually since the description can store some HTML, you could probably include a link in the description text. Give it a try.

Hey urlmaker! I see you've got the categories up and running. Good for you. Just a couple of bugs to let you know about. First, when the screen comes up, the figure select slot is already registering that it has been clicked on. This causes any mouse movement to instruct the page to change. Even the new page registers yet another sellection.
The other problem is less technical. It's about the categories themselves. Some of the dials I've made I can't find. This is perfectly understandable. The ones that are MIA are of VERY obscure characters, and you likely didn't know where to put them. Wonderboy, Nastyman, and Sassafrassquatch are characters created by the comedy musical duo Tenacious D. They should be in the 'Funny' category. I also can't find my Spawn dial. I figured he'd be in the Indy category, but he's not.
Another thing is the categories themselves. There's waay too many of them. Some of them I don't even understand. What do you mean by 'Clix Gaming'? No Anime category?
I would also suggest giving us the option of picking a category ourselves so that you don't have to concern yourself with knowing the obscure characters some of us weirdos care about. While I may think that Deunan and Briareos are awsome, I don't expect others to share my appreciation, much less have any clue who they are.

Wyldstaar, Excellent feedback, thanks again! The first issue is something you may have to get used to, let me explain. This is a feature that SEEMS like a bug. On page load the focus goes to the dial selector. That way you can use your mouse wheel or arrow keys to scroll through the figs without selecting the dropdown. I actually use this for figure review. So if you click on the Star Wars Category and mouse wheel down you can go from fig to fig. If this is NOT the behavior you are getting let me know. JavaScript can get squirly from browser to browser and although this is how MINE functions I could see it doing something different for others.
I am going to add a category self selector to edit mode. It is true, some of your figs and many of others figs are too obscure for me to place a category on. The reason I have delayed the self selector is a silly one. I want control over the UNREALISTIC category. This is a category that I will put any dial that crosses the line into rediculous. (defense higher then 19 that cannot be completely justified, attacks higher then 15 etc.) Once placed here the dial will have to be scaled back to get back into "general population" (more then slightly totalatarian)
As far as category types, that is a hard one. There are alot of dials. If I don't have alot of category types then I will have huge generic categories. I could merge TV/Movies/Cartoons into some kind of general larger category but they are really completely seperate kinds of dials. Plus, if I am looking for a Terminator, I know where to go. I can very easily add Anime, I just forgot because I don't really know any.
As far as what is 'Clix Gaming', these are simply dials of heroes or villians that were completely created for the use of heroclix games. They have no counterpart in another genre. RPG is for conversions of heroes RPGs. These two Categories I created for me, because I have them. Upload is an RPG conversion and I have a ton of Clix Gaming dials that are currently private, but won't always be.
Oh and Spawn is/was/I thought was a Marvel property so I lumped him into there. I am probably wrong about of alot of dials I placed though, so as soon as the self categoizing is finished (by the end of the week) the dials will be home where they belong.
If anyone has any more (or less) Category ideas, let me know. Also put in a vote if you like the dial selector the way it is. (even if I remove it, I can keep the functionality for myself)

i cant figure out how you put the super powers on the charecter
i mean i can make the stats but i cant put the superpowers on like i want....

Step 1- Log on
Step 2- Click Add New
Step 3- Assign stat numbers
Step 4- Use the scroll option below each stat to pick a Power
It's incredibly simple, and user friendly.

I sometimes have trouble getting the super power drop down boxes to appear. Often I am only able to edit stats, and have to hit "Update" 25 times to get the boxes to show up.
Also, Urlmaker, while I am not complaining, are those number colors going to be fixed as you promised? Right now I'm having to substitute in powers, do a screen capture, use Windows Paint to fill the color in, then going back in and fixing my powers so that my Jedi don't all have regenerate instead of willpower! ;)
Thanks,
Eric

If you are using IE 5.5 or above the dropdowns should work like a dream. (they do at my home and work) As far as coloring the numbers I realized it is more work then I thought. I initially reported that the number colors were in the DB, well, they are generated on the fly. So it will be another couple days.

brendanbrown:
To do the screen capture, click the "View Dial" button. Then make sure that you can see the whole dial on your screen (I have to hit F11 in IE5.5 for this). When you can see the whole thing, hit ALT+PrtScn. Then go into whatever graphics program you're using and do Edit-->Paste, and it should show up fine.

Well, this is what I get for saying I've never had a technical problem. I can no longer totally edit my dials. I can still change the numbers, but the scrolls for the super powers no longer appear on the edit screen. I'm not doing anything I havn't done twenty times before. It's just not working now.
Help me urlmaker, you're my only hope!
Edit- Now the scrolls for super powers don't appear on the Add New screen either.
Okay, it may be only me, but I can't get anything to work. I went to create new user, but i click it an nothing happens. Or if I click on al ink nothing happens. I don't get it.

I haven't changed anything. I know that IE can use alot of memory for the dropdowns, especially with all the colors. You could try rebooting to clear your memory cache. But beyond that, nothing has changed on that page for a few weeks. I have only updated the colors on the view screen and the dial display recently. Have you changed browsers or anything?
Sorry, you are having problems.

I never go to that much trouble. All that I do is go to the dial screen and hit my print icon. I change the size to 19%, then print. They turn out perfect every time.

Hey.
This looks like a fantasic tool - great job.
...unfortunately, I can't get it to work.
It won't let me create a new user. The link on main page did nothing, and when I tried to get through the link on help page, that got me to the username/password page.
I filled in the info and clicked the sign in button, and that also did nothing.
Am I being incredibly dense and missing something obvious?
Please help!!

Several people have had this problem. It is usually because they are not on the supported browser which is Internet Explorer 5.5 or above. I know not everyone wants to use it but it is all I really have time to develop for.

Please help me this my first attempt at this

Keeping in mind that I am speaking of PC terms and not Mac.
Print Screen is generally found on the upper right hand side of the keyboard. The button is usually found after the F12 key in the function row. Hitting Print Screen on windows computers writes the entire screen to your computers clip board where you can then paste into graphics programs. (or even word)
Alt is the key on either side of your space bar. The key is generally a shortcut key for various computer functions often software specific. When pressed and held before hitting the Print Screen key (both pressed together), it will take the currently selected window and copy everything that it is showing to the clip board.

Catagories can now be edited by the creator. Now I can spend less time going through trying to come up with what goes where and start developing again. So if you have stuff that is in the No Category area, see if you can find an existing category for it. If your dial has been deemed unrealistic by the evil dial maker dictator (me), then you can't change it. Muhuhahaha. Well, I am trying to encourage realistic playable dials and don't want any way off the wall stuff (although I do like wacky, check out the funny and Cartoon categories!). I am sure I won't catch all of the totally unrealistic dials but you guys feel free to let me know if you see something horrible. In very rare circumstances I will banish the dial all together. But this is only if it is like all zeroes or the description is lewd, offensive or just generally annoying. (to me) You can leave your dial as new for a while but you should move it to it's appropriate category after a while so that we can see what really is new. If New gets too full I will just dump New into No Category. (or the appropriate one if I know it and have time)
This is an example of what I find unrealistic.

The Teleport Pylon I created on the site has an odd problem. Instead of having KO all the way down the last click of the dial, there is a 15 in the Defense slot.

I am looking at them, but have no knowledge of what they should be. They look ok as far as I am concerned but I am sure you
8 8 8 7 7 7 6 6 5 5 4 KO
12 12 11 11 10 10 9 9 8 7 6 KO
19 18 18 17 17 16 16 15 14 13 12 KO
3 3 3 3 2 2 2 2 2 1 1 KO
This is Glories stats as I see them. The last click is the 11th slot with Steal Enegy as the only power. Is there only supposed to be 10 clix?
The other is similar. From my point of view.
Let me know.

I think kon-el makes some of the greatest dials never seen. The only public dials he has up are:
Natalie Furst (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?figs=1610)
Original Superboy (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?figs=1493)
He has some terrific private dials many in the DC side.
I love the Star Wars collection many cudos to both Eric Qel-Droma and Wyldstaar on the majority of those.
Although I don't follow the show Buffy (I have seen it just not often) I think you have a very well built collection. (yes, I actually go through almost all of these)
My favorite fig goes to Wyldstaar for
Longshot Veteran (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?figs=988)
In the cartoon section brendenbrown has two dials from Aqua Teen Hunger Force which I haven't seen but now want to just because of the descriptions of Meatwad (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?figs=905) and Frylock (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?figs=907)

Thanx a lot urlmaker, for both the compliment and the use of your site. I've always been a huge Longshot fan. I don't know why. I've barely read any stories with him in it. The ones I have read have almost always been excellent. (I didn't like the story line in Exiles at all. He was a wuss in that one!) He certainly is a highly usefull figure. I like to think it represents him well, while staying loyal to the comics.
I like the idea of being able to leave comments about a figure. I've lost track of how many times I've looked at a figure and thought, "What was he thinking?!" I don't mind when people critique my own figures either. Sometimes it's useful. Many of my original plans for Star Wars clix were severely flawed, and others helped me realize that. Some critiques have been flawed, and perhaps I've managed to help others realize their own errors in judgement through debate.

...are you going to add a way to display large figures...
Well there is alot I WANT to do. I just have limited time to do it. I basically have 3 requested features on the table and some upgrades that I have to do just to keep me happy. Why don't you guys give me some feedback as to what YOU would like to see. Just reply to this and prioritize the tasks below. I will try to average out the priorities by demand. Also if anyone has any feedback for improving the actual interface any critiques are welcome and listened to.
1) Dial Top printing, as with the dial, people want the ability to display the dial top info with name, team, expansion, id # and the stat icons, with the movment being the appropriate (fly, walk, swim) icon. Task level: Hard
2) Point generator, the Retardog formula put into the generation of the dial. It will have the option of using the formula or allowing for your own point input. Task level: Hard
3) Big fig stats, the ability to bring a stat set out to the big fig level. this would also require a new printable dial. Task level: Hard
4) Developer sorted views, I want to be able to list out the figs by developer. Task level: Easy
5) Change the New category so that it is not a selectable category. It will list the figs that are new to the system by date. (say last 10 days or so) Task level: Easy
6) Ratings system, I want to be able to rate the dials on a 5 star type system. This would be a user vote feature for any public dial. Task level: Medium
7) Dial Feedback, I haven't decided weather to make this a message system to the dial owner, or if it should be an open message thread for each dial that other users could view. Task level: Medium
8) Stats page, this page will just show some stats about the site. Like the stats listed in the thread above. # of users, # of dials, dials per user and private and public listings for all of the stats. Task level: Easy
Estimates:
Hard = 10-20 hours
Medium = 5-9 hours
Easy = 2-4 hours
My priority vote: 6, 7, 2, 5, 8, 4, 1, 3
Manchine
04/25/2003, 11:12
6) Ratings system
5) Change the New category
4) Developer sorted views,
7) Dial Feedback
I would say these should be done in this order. These are some of the most important things.

You have to consider a few things about how he made the dial.
1) He is 60 points making him a very expensive utility piece.
2) He only does 1 damage. Granted he has 3 targets but still he isn't a top threat piece.
3) Yes, he has PC and SS down the dial, but he is almost unhealable even with 2 rolls. Most medics will need an 8 to hit Longshot on his worst clix.
4) Longshots offensive luck runs out quick, he starts with the lucky shot 11 but drops fairly quick with a low of 6.
The only thing I would change at all is maybe take away a click or two of Super Senses. Check out the Rookie and Exp also. Nice logical dial progressions. You have the utility only Prob controller in Destiny and Scarlet Witch, we need another PC fig that can mix it up a bit like the Black Cat. But Longshot just isn't going to be able to eliminate opponents and I think that is reflected well.

Certain things are fine on his dial. I wont dicuss it Publicly unless Wlydestar (sorry if I get your name wrong) puts it up on the board. Some people dont like discussing or being told they are wrong. I said my piece and I will leave it unless Wyldstar(same as above ;) ) says we can discuss it. There's been several times in my Character Creation Threads that I have been wrong and I change it. Other people can give insight that you just never thought of.
Hope ya understand.
On a side note. I thnk I started my CHaracter Creation Threads about the same time you started your site. If I am not mistaken.

3) Big fig stats
Sorry, personal impetus here :)
4) Developer sorted views
It'd be easier to find a certain set of dials, per user
5) Change the New category so that it is not a selectable category. It will list the figs that are new to the system by date. (say last 10 days or so)
I, personally, like to check out what people have added every couple of days. This would make it a lot easier.
8) Stats page
It'd be nifty
6) Ratings system
It'd be interesting to see what people think of your dials
7) Dial Feedback
Ditto, but not as important
1) Dial Top printing
I have Adobe Illustrator templates, so this isn't an issue for me.
2) Point generator
I do it all personally, by hand, so again, not an issue.

As I said earlier, I always welcome public input in regards to my projects, as long as the opinion is well thought out and reasonable. With Manchine that won't be a problem. I've seen many of his posts and can't recall a time he's ever simply dissed something "because it sucks".
As for my defense of Veteran Longshot, well, it seems as though urlmaker has been doing a pretty good job of that in my absence already. I gave him high attack and defense stats for very straightforward reasons. He's just that lucky. He always hits what he aims at. It's not about skill with him, it's just who he is. Bullseye himself can be shooting at him, and a piece of masonry would fall from the building above to impact the bullet before it got to Longshot. Injury doesn't change the nature of a person to much extent, though fatigue will usually effect performance. He keeps his high defense because his luck is ballancing out his fatigue. Same with the attack value, but to a lesser extent. He doesn't deal out much damage despite the triple attack. Longshot simply HAS to have a triple attack. He'd have more if he only had the fingers for it! (Longshot only has three fingers and a thumb, for those of you who never noticed.) His high attack and defense values make him very costly for a piece that can inflict so little damage. I used a points generator program to calculate the points. I don't know who's system it uses, only that it's an easy and fast program that works in much the same way as urlmakers site, but without the ability to create the dial. I don't think it uses Retardog's formula, but I'm not sure. I'm far to busy/lazy to calculate the cost by hand. Retardog's formula may make him even more expensive for all I know. If so, I can live with that.
Manchine

I gave him high attack and defense stats for very straightforward reasons. He's just that lucky. He always hits what he aims at.
The Defense I have no problem. Isnt his ability to Hit and always hitting his luck. IF you roll and miss you have your PC to reroll. If he had a 9 attack (which is what I have discussed with others) to hit defense 16 is 61%. Adding a reroll in there increases it to about 80% hitting. So him hitting most of the time (he has missed against Wolverine and Spidey) is still there.
Now the last part His Dial. He is not made to take a lot of punishment. 6 Klixs of health is the Max I would think. Now his Rookie and Experienced I would say 5 Klixs of Health. In his Veteran I would say he's equal in Health to Black Cat, Cyclops, Bullseye, Daredevil, Elektra and others but you get the idea.
Thats it. The unique I would consider that the XP Elektra. LOL  :p :) ;) :classic:
Wyldstaar
04/27/2003, 00:55
Fair enough Manchine. So fair in fact, that I agree with you in part. Longshot should absolutely be no more than 6 clix total. His biology isn't alien enough to warrant any extra endurance, and luck doesn't factor into that.
As to the Attack value, I'm happy with it as it is. Spidey can use his SS to dodge, plus he should have a Defense value of at least 18. Hitting Wolverine is easy. He rarely bothers to dodge anything, especially a bunch of piddly throwing knives. He has a bad habit of letting people hit him since he knows it'll just grow back. That's why all of his figures have such low Defense values.
I'll be making the changes shortly.
On another note, I feel I must question your math. If a 9 Attacks a 16 Defense, you need to roll a 7 or better to hit. The most you can roll is a 12, but there is no 1 and 2 is a critical miss. Wouldn't that make a roll of 7 about 50/50? Anything above 7 should have less than a 50/50 shot at hitting, right? I'll be the first to admit that I'm LOUSY at math, but this seems simple to me. Maybe that's just because I'm bad a math, but I'm interested in hearing how you arived at your answer. Knowledge is power, and I can always use more power. If the formula is long and complicated, don't bother posting it. I'll just stare at it and go, "Uhhh... okay...?":cross-eye

This is how many combinations you can get with each dice roll on two 6sided dice. For Example getting 3 you can get a 1 and a 2 or a 2 or a 1. I know its the same number but each die can roll a 1 or a 2.
roll a 2 only 1 Odds 1/36 odds of rolling this or higher 36/36
roll a 3 only 2 Odds 2/36 odds of rolling this or higher 35/36
roll a 4 only 3 Odds 3/36 odds of rolling this or higher 33/36
roll a 5 only 4 Odds 4/36 odds of rolling this or higher 30/36
roll a 6 only 5 Odds 5/36 odds of rolling this or higher 26/36
roll a 7 only 6 Odds 6/36 odds of rolling this or higher 21/36
roll a 8 only 5 Odds 5/36 odds of rolling this or higher 15/36
roll a 9 only 4 Odds 4/36 odds of rolling this or higher 10/36
roll a 10 only 3 Odds 3/36 odds of rolling this or higher 6/36
roll a 11 only 2 Odds 2/36 odds of rolling this or higher 3/36
roll a 12 only 1 Odds 1/36 odds of rolling this or higher 1/36
At 7 if it was 50/50 it would be 18/36 but its 21. This is the simplist I can put it in. :p ;) :classic: :)

Ok, the user rating system is fleshed out. Users (when logged in) can place a vote by clicking on the star number that they think the dial represents. A loose criteria should be followed.
1 star - This dial wasn't well thought out. Inacurate or unrealistic.
2 star - This dial may have gotten something right but missed the mark on much of the concept. The concept may even be solid but an unplayable dial.
3 star - This dial may be playable but is missing key components or powers for the fig. Maybe the numbers are too high or low.
4 star - This should be a technically acurate dial with a few minor adjustments this would be wizkids quality.
5 star - This is the dial that should be made for this figure. It needs no changes and you would like to see this fig on the table. Wizkids quality.
Please don't make judgements for or against favorite/disliked characters in the ratings. This is rating this persons ability to create and acurate and playable dial and should not reflect your opinion of the character or creator personally. Many of the figs in the system don't have a comic counterpart. Don't feel like you shouldn't rate these. Rate based on the dial compared to description or playability (would you play the dial?) You can only vote once for a figure, but you may change your vote at any time by clicking on a new star. There is currently no indicator for your current vote but I may add one later. There will also be a vote review screen where you can view the vote history. (This is so you know if someone hates you or if you have a fan) The review screen is not yet complete.

I've done some voting as well, though I'm far from done. So many to review! There are some great ones, some awful ones, and some that just need a slight adjustment. I've even spotted a few of my own weak spots that I need to adjust sometime.
So far, I've been focusing on the Star Wars figures since that's my speciality. The biggest problem I see with many of the Star Wars clix are with the Force users, especially the Jedi. Many of them have been given hefty amounts of Mind Control, Psychic Blast and Telekinesis. While at first thought, they may seem appropriate, you have to keep in mind the restrictions the Jedi must abide by. The Force is for knowledge and defense- NEVER to attack. That means a Jedi can't throw an object at someone using TK, or use Psychic Blast, or use Mind Control to make an opponent attack one of his own. It's out of character and inappropriate. If you want to play that way, you should use a Sith. They have no such restrictions since they have no moral code. There also seem to be extremely large amounts of Probability Control amoung the Star Wars category. While Jedi and Sith can sometimes see into the future, it's not the kind of info that they can use the aid their comrades in battle. Super Senses is more accurate. Non-Force users such as Han Solo and Leia certainly have no business with Probability Control.

Here's an idea. I don't know how much trouble it would be, since web coding is one of the great mysteries to me.
When a user is logged in, they can open a "user summary" page that lists all their dials, the dials' "public/private" status, and their current ranking. Just a thought.
I'd find it incredibly useful. Browsing 170+ dials to see how people have voted on them takes a bloody long time.

Hey, urlmaker, great site. I've just started playing around with it for a set of customs I'm working on.
Unfortunately, every time I look at the "View Dial"; I get a power-less dial with 12, 12, 12, 5 for every single click. This happens when I view my or anyone else's dials. I'm using IE 5.2.2 for Mac OSX, and I also tried Netscape 7.0, to no avail. I've seen a number of comments that IE 5.5 is needed for some things, but Microsoft has not seen fit to update the Mac version to 5.5 yet. Am I simply doomed for my Mac-ness, or is this a problem with a known workaround?
Thanks in advance.

Ahhh yes. The Mac. I have heard of such a machine. I fear young lad that you may be doomed, for the time being. You see the methods I am using to update the dial are the Active X updates. Well I believe Active X is a windows only type of thing. I would have to modify the code to accomodate an embedded object for the Netscape/Mac crowd to enjoy my work. I suppose it is possible that I would get around to it someday. But cross-platform development takes time. We will see.

I agree with Wyldstarr's attitude of "public critique is helpful and appropriate," and since anyone who's spent time on the site knows that he and I have put up the vast majority of Star Wars clix, it stands to reason that it is my decisions being mentioned here, so I wanted to take a moment to discuss his criticisms.
All quotes from Wyldstarr
Force users, especially the Jedi... have been given hefty amounts of Mind Control, Psychic Blast and Telekinesis.
In my opinion, this attitude is completely untrue. Yoda says that the Force is for knowledge and defense - NEVER for attack. True. However, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Mace, Luke, Anakin, Kit Fisto, and other Jedi we have seen in the movies have absolutely no compunction about attacking in a fight. They aren't going to start it, but, by God, they'll finish it. (See also one of the Jedi Council mini-series by Dark Horse, where some thugs invade the Jedi temple to find Yoda and several other Jedi waiting with sabers drawn. Yoda smiles at them and says something to the effect of, "Easy to get in, it was. Not so easy to leave, you will find."
I have to add a bit of personal info here: I have studied Aikido for two years. Aikido is about as non-aggressive as a martial art can get, and the style that I study (Seidokan) is about as non-aggressive as Aikido can get. I do not believe in starting a fight. However, I have yet to meet a single yudansha (black belt) in Aikido who believes
1) punching/kicking/striking is never justified
2) injuring/maiming/killing an opponent is never justified
It's all a question of appropriate levels of threat and response. Aikido allows the martial artist to lower the level of threat, but not indefinitely. If someone wants to hurt me, I can (theoretically--I'm still pretty new) stop them without hurting them. If they want to injure me, I can stop them without injuring them, but I may hurt them (hurt being temporary pain and injure being actual damage to the body). If they want to maim me, I may have to injure them, etc. If there's five of them, and they are threatening my life, I may have to kill one or more of them to save myself, but I do not kill if I can reasonably avoid it.
This is just my personal philosophy and experience based on my life and experience with Aikido. I note it only to demonstrate that great thought has gone into my interpretation of SW characters and to show that I am not just dismissing Wyldstarr's opinion out of hand. I just strongly disagree with him on this point.
If you want to play that way, you should use a Sith. They have no such restrictions since they have no moral code.
Again, see above. There is a difference in my mind between killing for selfish or indiscriminate reasons and killing/attacking when necessary. Mace Windu's killing of Jango Fett (when Mace was so clearly dominating the fight that he could have just cut off his arm or something) I believe clearly demonstrates that, canonically speaking, the Jedi would agree with me here.
Again, a question of interpretation. The Black Cat is not a Force-user, and ever since Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 115 or so, she has not had bad luck super powers. Why, then, does the Vet have PC? At that point, the Rookie would do better with PC, as she used to pre-rig her fights to make it LOOK like she had bad luck powers. Instead, PC is used there as a way to show that she is an extremely lucky person.
In my SW clix, I use it on Han to specifically show that he is one lucky dude. Next to Luke and Vader, he's probably the single best pilot/fighter in the Classic Trilogy. In the SW:RPG, scoundrels like him get a power called "Better Lucky than Good." PC is my way of showing that with Han.
PC on Leia's Vet version is to show her emerging power in the Force. ("My father has it... I have it... and, my sister has it.")
PC for the Jedi is about as appropriate as it could be. Destiny, as a character, wasn't quick enough with some of her fortune telling to be able to yell at Mystique ten yards away and say, "duck!" but she can do it in HC. Sometimes the powers are just darned handy.
The Jedi are also known for their teamwork and uncanny reflexes in battle. In my Aikido randori (group sparring) experience, what looks very cool and very planned and very "three-moves-ahead" is often no more than good tactics mixed with instinct. I'm no Bruce Lee; don't get me wrong. I often tell people that I know enough Aikido to REALLY get my butt kicked. However, I have seen several people (and, once or twice, done this myself) take an attacker and turn them into a blocker in the middle of randori without even thinking about it. Is it so hard to believe, then, that a Jedi could block a laser blast in a certain way so that it helped out someone else on the board whether they meant to or not?
Again, Wyldstarr and I have different interpretations of the Star Wars characters, and I, for one, think that's great. If you agree with mine, fantastic; if you don't, you're not stuck with my interpretations!
Huge props to URLMaker for the site; where'd the donation thingy go?

Let me throw out one more thought in regards to my Star Wars HeroClix on URLMaker's site:
When I initially made my set of 75 or so figs, I was working with Marvel IC powers ONLY [b] and the game was meant to be SELF-CONTAINED[b] (it still is--more on that in a minute). There was a TON of B/C/F, and what happened was that Mace fought like Obi fought like Vader fought like Tyranus fought like Maul fought like Yoda. It was a really boring game that was often over in a matter of MINUTES. Especially when powers like Psychic Blast came out, I had more options to play with.
I decided that, in the end, lightsabers just don't really speed things up that much. Sure, they'll cut through battle droids like you wouldn't believe, but so will a 3 damage. So will CCE. So will... you get the idea. I decided that the game would ultimately be more interesting if I only used B/C/F for people who really sliced and diced with their sabers, and even then, it was just used for a few clix here and there.
Also, as I mentioned above, my SW HC game is meant to be self-contained. NO WAY is my Vader Veteran only 100 points with that rainbow-dial. I came up with a separate spreadsheet that emphasized stats as much as powers, because I think WK puts too much emphasis on powers. (Look at DC stats vs. Marvel; which set of figs would you want to choose from in any given game--Bane notwithstanding.) When I make my Marvel figs (Spider-Man, Surfer, Mysterio, etc.), I try to price them fairly for the game at large.
I think HC figs are too-expensive in general; all their prices should be reduced by 30%, IMHO. So, when making a SW-game, that's kind of what I did. I don't think powers are worth as much as stats (give me a natural 12 attack with a natural 5 damage over a 10 PB and 2 CCE any day of the week), for the most part. So, lots of powers in the SW clix, with more moderate stats to keep things even (Ultron and Firelord's attack values are obscene).
I also changed several powers. Psychic Blast is one of the major changes: it ignores ALL powers that affect attack or damage, including Super-Senses and ESD. Why? I tend to think that Force-abilities cancel each other out; Vader trying to choke another Jedi at a distance is the same as a Clonetrooper shooting at a Stormtrooper. Psychic Blast represents that cancelling idea.
Impervious in my game is basically Toughness + Super Senses without the targeting restrictions of the actual power. Only Vader has Impervious, as it combines his armor with his Force powers. The problem was, Vader was darned-near unbeatable, even for other Jedi. I hate when characters are rendered 100% useless, and I didn't want to give all of my light-side characters 3+ damage OR Outwit OR Perplex OR B/C/F OR Psychic Blast OR Enhancement OR Incapacitate, but I was so scared of Vader's game imbalancing tendencies that I decided to downgrade Impervious a bit. That way I could have lower damages and fewer illogical powers.
Because of the point shifts, MC has been changed to a 50-point 1-damage threshold, with the Jedi/Sith teams counting automatically as an extra 50-points for MC damage. This way MC wasn't totally useless, as most of the characters weren't immune to it, but it's still not necessarily your best move to mind-control Vader (3 clix of damage to the MC'er!).
Finally, all the figures I have up on the site for Star Wars are figs that I was able to get/rig out of 3 boxes of the EPIC DUELS game from Hasbro, which is why Qui-Gon is a unique (I converted an Obi-Wan) and why there's no Rookie Anakin (no Jake Lloyd). I plan on buying the QUEEN's GAMBIT game soon, which will provide me with Gungans (yay?) and other versions of Amidala/handmaidens, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Maul, Naboo Troopers, etc. BTW, I also have the Endor Attack Micro Machines stuff, so expect some Speeder-bikes and AT-ST's in the future.
I am very interested in any comments or questions, and welcome criticism, although I reserve the right to disagree.
I have to get up in 7 hours; good night...

Eric Qel-Droma has returned! I was beginning to think you had gone MIA. Don't worry about the name thing. Everybody does it.
You make some excellent arguments. It's time to make my case. Let the debate begin!
I can certainly see your POV in regards to justifying a Jedi attacking to defend themselves/others, and even agree with it. We see Jedi fighting throughout the Star Wars saga. No surprise there. I made my decisions regarding appropriate powers of the Jedi through observation of the films: What we did or did not see a Jedi do.
What we don't see is a Jedi using the Force to throw objects at another sentient being (Telekinesis). We did see Sith do it though. We see Jedi use the Force to get their enemies to PASSIVELY do things they wouldn't do ordinarily, but not use the Force to have one enemy attack another (Mind Control). We've seen Jedi use the Force to throw battle droids about (Force Blast), though never a sentient being. Personally, I don't consider Force Blast enough of an attack to be considered the Dark Side, but some may interperet it that way. We do see the Sith use Force Blast. We never see a Jedi use the Force itself to attack (Psychic Blast). We see Darth Tyranus and the Emperor use it. This is why Darth Tyranus knew he must fight Yoda with a lightsabre when his attacks of Force Lightning failed. Yoda could only use a lightsabre to retaliate because using the Force to attack in kind is an attribute of the Dark Side.
In regards to Probability Control, I think we're simply going to have to agree to disagree. I understand your reasoning behind the decision, it's just not my cup of tea.
I certainly agree that Star Wars clix should be used as a stand alone game. If it's played mixed, some cheese-head is going to want to taxi in Darth Vader with a Doombot! Blastphemy!!!! I like some of your modifications to the powers as well, especially Impervious.
On the subject of acquiring Star Wars minatures, check out Ebay some time. There are usually a good number of the West End Games minis available, often at reasonable prices too. Unfortunately, half of them are already painted most of the time. WEG made minis for EVERYONE! They even made speeder bikes with scout troopers and rebels. Other options you might keep in mind are the Hasbro Action Fleet vehicles. Luke's land speeder, X-Wing, Snow speeder, etc are all perfectly scaled for heroclix. Again, more special rules would be necessary. Personally, that's a bit too complicated for my tastes. My only large scale figure plan is for an Imperial Scout Walker aka AT-ST. That will be SWEET!
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!
Eric Qel-Droma
05/06/2003, 10:48
This has to be quick, as I'm at work and shouldn't be goofing around!
What we don't see is a Jedi using the Force to throw objects at another sentient being (Telekinesis). We did see Sith do it though.
That doesn't mean that they CAN'T. TK the power can also be used to throw opponents away, and using that like FB (for knockback, etc) is a modification to the power I would definitely make. I would argue that the lack of Jedi throwing stuff at opponents has much more to do with fighting style over fighting rules or morals. If your opponent is constantly coming at you, why bother with attacking? It's much easier to blend with the attack and use their energy than to attack and expend your own.
We see Jedi use the Force to get their enemies to PASSIVELY do things they wouldn't do ordinarily, but not use the Force to have one enemy attack another (Mind Control).
Again, this doesn't mean that they CAN'T or won't. Honestly, with the notable exceptions of Jango and Boba, who do serious damage, I would argue that the click of damage that your MC'ed Stormtrooper just did to your other Stormtrooper is more him getting confused and tripping everything up. Like R Doc Ock and Energy Explosion, the results of the power are more important than the "working" of the power; I can explain the storyline behind the "working" of a power anyway I want.
We've seen Jedi use the Force to throw battle droids about (Force Blast), though never a sentient being. Personally, I don't consider Force Blast enough of an attack to be considered the Dark Side, but some may interperet it that way. We do see the Sith use Force Blast.
See TK above. I think Anakin might have done some TK/FB stuff in the Geonosian droid factory (esp. TK-style stuff).
Now this is REALLY a question of interpretation, and several different interpretations of several different points. VERY quickly:
1) My modified Psychic Blast is not necessarily Force Lightning; it is a ranged, Force-based attack that both passes things like Armor (Fetts) and Force powers (Super-Senses).
2) Tyranus, IMHO, did not resort to a lightsaber because he wanted Yoda to be able to retaliate. He did so because
a) Yoda was just turning his Force Powers aside repeatedly, and Tyranus figured out that the Y-Man could do so all day, and...
b) He believed himself to be Yoda's superior with a lightsaber. The Ep.2 Visual Dictionary notes that Dooku was a master of Type II lightsaber fighting, which is an older fencing-like style. (This, BTW, is the major reason he beat Obi-Wan so easily; Obi-Wan concentrated on Type III, which is basically blaster deflection against multiple opponents. Dooku had trained for that type of fight SPECIFICALLY, whereas Obi-Wan had not. Although, if you think about it, his fight with Maul should have been a wake-up call to him. Oh, well.) With his big, dark side ego, Tyranus thought, "Okay, maybe he has more parlor tricks than me, but I've mastered lightsaber combat and just beaten one of Yoda's prize students without breaking a sweat. He's old, and I have the power of the dark side at my command. I'll surely win this way."
3) Using the Force to attack is, IMO, not of the dark side. The reason your average Jedi doesn't generate Force Lightning is that that attack specifically comes from anger, and using ANGER to attack is of the dark side. (See the recent NJO book Traitor and/or Destiny's Way(?)where Vergere explains to Jacen Solo that there IS NO DARK/LIGHT SIDE of the FORCE; there is only THE FORCE. It is our choices which determine the side of OURSELVES that we use. Sure, it might be an exercise in semantics, but I think that's a much more accurate description of my understanding of the Force and life in general.)
As far as miniatures go, I'm not sure how I feel about metal HeroClix. Somehow that seems to offend my sensibilities...?
As for the MIA thing, work has been murder (to quote Norman Osborn), so I haven't had time to post like this. Also, there are few HC subjects that truly deserve this much attention, IMO.

EQD- "As far as miniatures go, I'm not sure how I feel about metal HeroClix. Somehow that seems to offend my sensibilities...?"
Well if this is the case, I have one more recomendation to make. There was a plastic model kit made of Jabba's Throne Room back in the day. I never had it myself, but I believe it was along the same scale as Heroclix. It was mainly full of the assorted aliens of the Palace, but it does have Boba Fett, Jabba, C-3PO, and the other main characters as they appeared in the throne room. The sculpts aren't nearly as good as the WEG metal miniatures, but they're better than nothing. Unfortunately for you, the best and most plentiful selection of Star Wars minis are in metal. The old Micro Collection figures from Kenner were metal too.
I also noticed that you are an Expanded Universe fan. The Mandroid Armor figures would easily pass for Zero-G Stormtroopers if they were repainted. Just a thought.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! I think one of the main reasons we disagree on powers and such is due to the Expanded Universe. To be honest, I'm not a big EU fan. Some of them are good (such as the Thrawn Saga), but most of it just didn't do it for me. I found them to be too hit or miss. They were either pretty good or simply awfull. The EU books are huge sellers, so I'm obviously in the minority in this regard.

Manchine, actually, yes! There is a new user dial view mode. The menu item right under the category title "User Mode". It will only show users with more then 5 public dials. That is greater then or equal to 6. So if you have only a few dials start cranking. The numbers represent your public dials, so if you click on your name while you are logged in, you will get more dials then the number represents since you can also see your own private dials by user (highlighted in red) Your user dials will still be highlighted in yellow, just because I didn't want to recode all of that highlighting stuff for user views even though it is redundant.

I have actually been very busy and off line for a bit. I am still thinking of the dial maker users. My newest project has sidelined a bunch of the other issues. We have well over 3000 dials with over 20,000 clix on those dials. The puny Access database can only handle so much. The site crawl has gotten to me, so I am getting some SQL server space. I have to port the database so that is my new priority. The benifits go beyond performance, as I will be able to make DB changes without bringing the site offline in most cases.
Hopefully after that is done I can spend some time cleaning up some of the previously listed items. Also, I plan on doing cleansing of the current records. This will not impact any of the current dials. I am going to purge Generic Hero records, I will also ax any accounts that have no active dials. This doesn't mean they can't simply resubscribe but I want to weed out any accounts that are simply forgotten or unused.
I have seriously been considering eliminating some of the uncatagorized dials. They take up space and they have been forgotten for the most part, so if you have any in the No Catagory section please catagorize them or let me know what catagory is needed for them. I certainly don't mind adding catagories if I can get some dials out of the No Cat bin. There are way too many.
Also, anyone overutilizing the New Dial bin will have to start catagorizing thier records also. I will not purge these records but I will start catagorizing them myself. If I don't know what they are, there is a danger of them going to the No Category bin which I will clean out periodically. So please catagorize your new dials. After I fix the DB I am going to automatically populate the New Dials bin based on date of creation.
I have deleted the "Rape Artist" dial from the system. The creator has created some good dials, I think this was just a lapse in judgement. I don't mind dials that are oddball or wacked out. We have religious icons and all sorts of other things in the database that some may consider off color but lets try to maintain a bit of class.
In the future I may ask for some administrative help from the users, if anyone is interested in helping with some general maintenance tasks please let me know. I have been very busy with things and with 3000 dials I can't keep up with that kind of misuse checking. I have a rudimentary admin system set up but I could beef it up a bit if I knew it would save me time in the long run. It would be the equivelent of Moderator status on the realms.

Is there any way that we can help pay for that extra server space? I don't know about anybody else, but I've gotten a ton of use out of the site, and would rather fork over some green than see the site go away.
(I also don't have any time to help out with it, but as the subject says, if time is money...)

I'd be happy to act as a moderator. I don't mind unusual dials either. I have a few in there that most would likely just go "Huh...?" to. I'm also pretty knowledgeable in regards to comic characters, so I could send unassigned dials to the proper categories once in a while. Your site is awsome, so helping out some of the day to day maintenance is the least I can do.

Finally created a few dials for some characters I'd like to see:
Black King, Union Jack, Baron Blood, and the Impossible Man. Tried to do some that weren't up there yet. There was another Union Jack, but it's obviously a much more experienced version than my interpretation. Anyway, take a look and let me know what you think. This is fun. Thanks for the site, urlmaker!

Impossible Man (http://www.aduckwhat.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm?cat_view=3)
And since I can't seem to un-privatize Black King, here's the stats I did for him:
64 points/Ground Move/No Team/No Range
7 7 8 8 8 8 7 7
7 8 8 8 9 9 8 7
13 14 14 15 16 16 15 13
1 2 2 2 3 2 2 2

Sorry, spacing didn't work out quite right on the Black King's defense. Hopefully it's not too hard to read. Also, apparently the links don't take you right to the dials themselves. Just the list that you'd choose the dials from. Little less convenient than I'd hoped. Ah well, I'd appreciate any comments, anyway.

An update on the Dial Maker progress or where in the world is URLMaker
It has been 5 months since I put up the first post for the Online Dial Maker. On 2/21 I posted the first thread, on 7/21 my wife and I had our 3rd child. Several months previous to that she was on bedrest. So I have been effectively out of commision for the last several months. But still in 5 months I have a tool that has over 3700 dials input into it with over 700 user accounts. Now mother and baby are well so what is in my queue?
· I have purchased a SQL DB but not implemented it.
· I have a point generator code to implement.
· Make the new category self populate based on age.
· I will look into a dial top and perhaps revisit print sizing now that I have had time away.
That being said, I still have little time to do any of this and it will likely be several months before I get these things complete. The DB I could have done in a few weeks if all goes well.
Do you guys still monitor this stuff? Are there still needs for this tool to advance? Don't worry, I won't remove anything that is already done and nothing will go away. I am just curious if the interest is still alive in others as it is in me. The tool works great for me as it is now, but I like making the fans happy. :) Let me know what you think.

(almost 5000 dials, that's over 20,000 clix!)I haven't updated the software since my daughter was born in July, it has just been too busy. As things settle down and I get back into my old patterns (I haven't played a clix game since I got my CJ case) I will get back to updating the site. I don't forsee any upgrades as this thread has been dead for months. But I will likely tinker with it again in the future. A large part of why I built it was to upkeep my Cold Fusion and Flash skills as the job I am in now does mostly Java and little web stuff. But it was fun and I love browsing through the dials to see what people had done. It is fun now to go through and see if anyone got the Silver Surfer close and chars like that. :) Take it easy.

I have updated the Team Abilities and Powers. I had noticed someone writing in the comments area, "Quake on the last two clix" and became embarrased. It's a relational database even the colors are stored, so it takes like a minute to update that stuff. Next time I slack on something so trivial, please feel free to post to this thread as this thread sends me an email.
I posted some new stats to brendanbrown's new thread on char reviews (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77249). I will likely still be on leave from major updates for the forseeable future. I would like to update the database for speed but probably won't be able to for some time. How's it going URLMaker? It's time to ressurect this thread once again. It's also time to pester you for the inclusion of the Morlocks, Serpent Society, and Ultimate X-Men Team Abilities into the Online Dial Maker.
I've made a couple of new dials recently with your site, but they're actually NOT Star Warsclix! I'm in the process of creating a set of Generation One Transformers Clix on Sentinel sized bases. The figures are the PVCs sold as "Heroes of Cybertron." I'm making four Autobots (Optimus Prime, Grimlock, Jazz and Wheeljack) and four Decepticons (Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream and Devastator). While your site doesn't make large sized dials, it's quite simple to cut and paste a pair of regular sized dials onto the large one. The dials just have to be created as Part One and Part Two.

I'm not sure how to save the dial image, but I can tell you how I print them. First, get the big dial on screen. Next, go to your File window in the toolbar and click on Print. When your printer pop-up appears, go to the section that lets you change the scale of the picture. This will vary depending upon what brand of printer you use. I have an Epson, so I can only give you details on that model. I go to Properties, then Layout. The Layout screen has the option to change the scale of the printout. Printing at 19% works perfect for me. You may have to use trial and error to get it just right for your printer. Good Luck, and happy dial making!

Try www.irfanview.com It's the best image viewer for PCs - fast, free, a zillion functions.
I copy that big dial from Internet Explorer just by pressing Prt Scrn. No Alt needed.
Then I open Irfanview, hit "paste" and crop (Ctrl-Y) the image down to just the dial.
Then I save that image as a bitmap (not jpeg), and paste it later into Word or Wordperfect.
If there's not too much white space around that dial image, then you can resize in Word or Irfanview to 1.13 inches. In any case, shrinking to 19% works for me, too.
I recently fit 30 dials onto one 8x11 page - including my new versions of Hulk, Iron Man and Colossus. Very happy to have playable versions of these heroes...
All of this might be posted somewhere else, but I thought it was worth repeating.

You have to hit the Update button first. Once the update screen has come up with your dial, you may then hit the View Mode button to put the dial into the main database. Once the dial is in the database, you may hit the View Dial button and get the results you are looking for.

Ok, back up, sorry again for the outage. If you are curious as to what happened read on, if you are just glad to have it up again there you go.
I had done a simple update several months ago to improve load performance on the initial page. You may have noticed that "All" is your worst enemy for load times in the dial maker. I cleaned out the "New" catagory so that it only had a few things in it. That worked fine, even though the system wasn't actually capturing "new" data. (rather have a clean first load, then everyone assigning thier dials "new" status)
So everything was fine until I loaded the access file into Access 2003. When I saved it put a bad record into the new status that I can't seem to delete. So it returns the very nondescript message that "the record is deleted" or some such. I am pretty sure it is enforcing a relationship with another record, but can't figure out which.
Anyway, for now I had to remove the "New" initial load and if you click on "New" you will get an error. But I can work around that until I get that fixed.
Maybe I will fianally put in the REAL new feature where it pulls the last 40 or so new dials in. Heres hoping that City of Heroes doesn't take priority. :)

First of all, kudos on the DialMaker, it's a lot of fun to work with, and great for prototyping dials for custom figs. Additionally, the dial generator option is a fantastic enhancement, and automates an important task in the custom-fig/dial hobbyist creation process.
I know this has been brought up before, but I must put in another plea for those of us whose custom clix hobbying has been seriously curtailed since the untimely demise of Retardog from the ranks of Clix R&D mavericks. His Excel file was the only program I knew of that attempted (and succeeded to a great degree) the monumental task of cracking the Colonel's secret recipe of calculating point values for all those numbers and colors and icons that appear on dials.
We have been floating in limbo for about two years since Retardog apparently got a life and moved on to more important matters, but unfortunatlely, the solution he left us with is only a partial one, missing the updated yellow-green powers and several Team Abilities that have appeared since.
Your creation primarily addresses dial making from another point-of-view, that of creativity and fun -- certainly a perfectly valid perspective. And it has gone even further, adding the ability to create (again, automatically -- an awesome idea) actual, printable dials for the customs enthusiast.
So I implore you -- please do not stop here! You have the basic ingredients for a truly outstanding product -- the final piece of the puzzle is all that remains. I have seen no one else step up to the plate since Retardog's departure. We need someone to take up the mantle -- you are already closer than anyone else has dared. Apparently, the ability to appreciate Heroclix and mathematics/programming is a rare combination. I would ask you on behalf of everyone who enjoys "dialing their own", please consider trying to code a point-value generator into your DialMaker.
I, for one, would gladly pay money to have such a tool. -- Thanks. :)

Thanks for the Kudos on the software! I really enjoyed writing it and it has been up for a good long time now. I haven't really done any new updates on the site other then just updating the database for new abilities and teams. I have read through the formulas of Retardog and I believe I could implement them into the dial maker in the state they were in back in the day. My mathmatics skills, however, are not up to taking on updating said formulas. To be honest with you, I haven't really been motivated to even add in the point generator with the code given to me by a very nice member of the realms here. I haven't moved on to greener pastures, I have some VS cards but still have a case of Fantastic Forces coming to me. I just don't do the amount of custom work I used to. I still like to create dials now and then, I am currently working on an adaption of clix for Starship Troopers, using the miniatures from Mongoose Publishing.
There definately is a hole in the process of custom hero creation and it will likely be many years before it is completely filled, if ever. Until then, just guess the point value and playtest, that's what I do. :)
Good luck and happy dial making.

It's working for me just fine. After you make the dial you want, first you hit 'Update'. This will bring you to a new screen to finalize the dial. If you don't want to make any changes, hit 'View Mode.' This will complete the dial. Now hit 'View Dial', and a large image of the dial you created should appear. If you print it as is, the thing will take up the entire page of paper. To get it to the proper size, shrink the image to 19%. As for the paper, I just use the typing paper I always use. It works just fine.
Good Luck!

Alrighty, I was able to log in, design a dial, double check it, but when I go to View Dial, it's giving me a blank dial with 12, 12, 12, 5. Any solution for this?
Thanks again!:)

Hmm... I know that some people have problems using it with some operating systems. The site isn't compatable with some of them. I don't know enough about that sort of thing to understand it. You might try contacting urlmaker about it. It's his site, although he doesn't work on it much anymore.

My Dial Maker has had quite a few updates. I have admitadly neglected the poor dial maker for quite some time, well, after a long time (check out the first post date in this thread) I have finally upgraded my database. I was running on Access (a small office database) and now have upgraded to SQL (a real database). It was alot to do to convert it, but it bought the site quite a bit in speed. But even that wasn't enough, because I had 11,000 + dials names showing in the drop down on every page load, I have streamlined the interface to show only the categories you select to view. There are a host of other upgrades that you can read about in the Release 2.0 link on the site. But one of my proudest features is the integration of the hcrealms code which for now displays at the very bottom of your dial screen (I will make it pretty later) but you can put one of these on the boards without any pesky bboard coding!

I do need a hand, if anyone runs into bugs or errors please send me an email or PM me with what the problem is. There is still a problem where sometimes you need to login twice, but I was able to log in on both Firefox and IE. So have at and PLEASE let me know what you think, even if you think it blows!

I really like the HCR code mod alot. I'm also a fan of the new creator mode list. I always hated that my name was at the very bottom!
I've sorely neglected my mod projects. I haven't worked on any of my Star Warsclix in ages. I finished my Transformerclix at least. There weren't so many of those, so the project didn't seem so daunting. My SWclix collection is so huge that it seems overwhelming. The Doctor Whoclix are in a similar situation, but the advent of the new TV series has given me new inspiration. I also finally managed to track down my large stock of Daleks and Cybermen to go along with them. Now all I need to do is come up with some custom versions of Doctors nine and ten to go along with the first seven.

Yeah, I just decided that the most productive dial makers should be at the top. The upgrade happened because the site went down. I realized how unmaintained it was so that's why the flurry of motion on it. Even if it is less used then a few years ago, it is still used almost every day and since it is the host of 22,000 dials (11,000 of which are public) I felt it deserved to not die. I will maintain the site as long as people keep on using it.

Thanks Gacy!
A few updates, I fixed the dial printing in Firefox. and made the HCRealms dial code expandable, you just click the "Show HCRealms Code" Link at the bottom of the dial screen for the dial code. I changed the "Privacy" setting to be the more obvious question "Allow Everyone to View This Dial? Yes/No" as the system hosts over 50% of it's dials as "Private" non publicly viewable dials. I am thinking that people think that the community will be able to EDIT the public dials, when in actuality, it is just the ability to view the dials.

I really love the site and have used it in the past. Thanks for all of the hard work.
Great work, I think I came across your site ages ago but never got around to using it, I will for all future creations now! Thanks for the DB!

It's good to see that you've included the Special Powers on the site. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on the actual dial. It only shows up on the display screen. The view dial screen shows special powers without the box.

I put that up yesterday, added the Realms code and the front door dial, but haven't yet done the print dial. The Flash takes quite a bit longer to modify, the DB already had the capability for a background image for the dial, I added that when I was playing with the horrorclix dial maker. I kinda want to do a card-maker too, but I don't know how much time I will have. But I WILL update the print dial soonish. Just give me a bit of time.
You're quick!
