View Full Version : Why does unique Superman suck so badly

When I first got my case of DC in Sept or whenever they came out, I got two unique Superman's and I had no desire to have this figures so I sold both of them for 30 each. Not too bad. The other day just for the heck of it I bought a DC booster and pulled unique Superman. After seeing he only goes for 10 bucks now and I doubt anyone will trade for him, I opened up his baggie and looked at his stats.

0 range and he has X-Ray vision? Cool he can see those stealthed characters from a mile away, he just can't shoot at them. So he has to move into close combat with them and attack them. Hey isnt' that what every other figure has to do?

Then I notice he has super strength. Cool he can throw objects at the stealthed characters... for 2 clicks! Yeah so for the rest of his dial he sucks.

Sure an army of Doombots can use his team ability, but isn't Steel easier and cheaper for that? So he has force blast and toughness and his attack and shield keep getting lower after the first 2 clicks. To me he looks like an 80 point character not 125.

Hopefully I can still trade this guy. I'm very tempted to use him in a game and see if I get my butt handed to me. I can see his charge combined with Hawkman being tough but I doubt I would get a real chance to use it.

Mr. Kerr: you are completely correct about the uselessness of U Superman. The Superman Ally Team Ability is not cheap, so it artifically pumps his cost up to 125 - I say artificially because you'll hardly ever get to use it unless you're holding an object - but guess what? If you're holding an object, I suspect you'd probably just use Charge and attack that way instead of throwing it. He's useless - and look at the third click. He's not even as good as Blue Beetle at that point. Massive waste. I'd have a hard time fielding him for 80 points, let alone 125.

Yeah that's the thing. What good is force blast to this Superman? His range is 0. So if you push the character back 3 spaces then sure he has to come back to you, assuming his range is 0. Even then the character pushed back could be taxied to Superman to continue his assault.

Sometimes I wonder if they look at some of the figures they make.

And at least Blue Beetle moves for free and takes advantage of his team ability.

A friend of mine has him, and boy U. Sups lame. Everytime he uses him, U. Sups is the first to be eliminated. He's worse than that guy who sang, "Like A Virgin" on American Idol. Unique Sups is nothing more than a really expensive Taxi. I rather have a R. booster Gold anyday.

I had a tremendous time pairing him with V Bane. Charge is with Supes, then smack em for 5 with Bane.

Add, say, V Nightwing for Outwitting whoever the big guys are beating on, and then either R Huntress, E Metropolis SCU, or E Checkmate Medic depending on your tastes.

Shake vigorously, then enjoy.

Important note: Since you've got 2/3 of your points invested in the Supes/Bane combo, be careful. Feel free to push Bane a few times, as he doesn't really lose much. Don't push Supes unless you have to, unless he goes off his Impervious clicks, than push him to get him to the medic.

Also, thrown heavy objects do 3, not 2.

Unique Superman does have his uses. He is the cheapest flyer with Charge and Super Strength. If you combine him with another Charging Super Strength figure and a 3-d object dumpster you can do a double charge using the same dupster twice. But that can be hard to coordinate since Hawk is your only DC choice (other than another Superman, since Doomsday is AE and all). It works best in mixed games where She-Hulk can help out.

Overall Superman just isn't that super in any form... even OWAW flavor... that's a lot of points in one figure.

I think he's more worth his points than the other Supermen. I've seen a couple of teams take first at tournaments that utilized him, including one of mine. The charging super strength flier with a couple of clicks of Impervious is very nice. He'd be better without that Superman Team symbol, admittedly.

Well the Unique Superman (black costume) is supposed to represent Superman just after he is "reborn" (read 'Death of Superman', 'A World Without Superman' and 'Return of Superman'), and he is only just reganing his powers, so he is quite weak. Infact, Mongul almost killed him just as he and Steel were running through what used to be Coast City as they were trying to foil the Cyborg's (Hank Henshaw) scheme. It was only Hal Jordan's intervention that saved him.

He is quite useful if you can use him well, don't expect him to last long if you charge him in all the time as your 'big hitter'.

I think the Superman team ability was put there just to save face, with the exception of his Veteran version, how can you not make a Superman figure a Superman ally?

you can have Superman not be a Superman ally the same way you can have Spider-Man not on his own team, to save the points.

Of course we could possably see some cheap wildcards come out in a future set that would make him worth it (IE Doombot)

Unique Superman doesn't even represent the character correctly. When Superman came back in Reign of the Supermen he was wearing that black costume and had almost no power at all. He shouldn't even have those powers or have been able to fly unless he was using the jet boots. He should have been a nice cheap leadership piece like Kingpin. Also, they could have done a better job with the face. He looks more like Michael Jackson than Superman.

I always call him Fabio Superman for that dashing and manly pose combined with his fine flowing locks. :D

"I can't beleive it's not Batman!"

I forgot all about this post. When I was looking over the new topics I saw "Why does unique Superman suck so badly" and I remembered my post, wait it is my post. :)

I wish I could trade this guy off, but I stupidly glued him to his base thinking I was going to be happy and keep him. Well I was wrong.

And to answer the question about Doombots and Superman. Yeah you can combine them in friendly play and in a lot of tournaments people use house rules saying it's okay to mix them.

They just aren't supposed to be mixed in prize supported tournaments. Friendly play and house rules make it okay.

This Superman isn't cheap. R Steel is much cheaper and he's a better use of the wildcad ability with Doombots and so on.
