This weekend was the end of an era for me. Two of my best friends (#1 - the guy who got me into HeroClix, #2 - the first guy I got into HeroClix) were both leaving town, looking for jobs/a better life. So this was our last game with either of them for who knows how long.
We decided we would play two games. Friend #1 came up with a MTG theme. Pick a magic color, and make a 500pt team with that kind of theme. From what I can remember...
RED = Brick Surtur, 3 Fire Demons, FF Starter Human Torch, Firefly
BLACK = Black Hand, Nightmare, Zombie Giantman, Ghost Widow, Raven
GREEN = Wolverine, Batman, Black Cat, Owlman, Songbird, Beast
BLUE = Professor X, Mystique, Blizzard, Umar...and others I can't remember.
It was a fun game. I played the Red team. I won because no one could hit my Surtur. They'd either miss the 18 def, or I'd get the impervious roll. The Black team had me the most worried, but the Green team knocked the Black Hand off of the highest point, onto the second level, and right into Surtur's lap. The charging Fire Demons were also great tie-up pieces.
Game 2 was a SCENARIO that I came up with. By the time Game 1 was over, my other friend showed up. The theme was to pick a real comics team, 300 points.
Team1 = Ulitmate Iron Man, Ult Captain America, Spider-woman
Team2 = Starters Mr. Fantastic, Thing, Sue Storm
Team3 = a carpload of old Shield generics
Team4 = Professor X, Meltdown, Bishop, Psylocke
I ran the scenario. In the middle of the building I put a broken robot (from Danger Room starter). I said it fell from space onto a building in Japan. The winner was the team that got the robot back to their starting corner.
Robot rules:
The robot cannot be moved by TK or thrown.
Someone holding the robot cannot be TKed or thrown.
It takes an action to pick it up.
You can drop it as a free action.
If you hold the robot...
1) you are earthbound, and cannot fly or phase
2) your speed value is replaced with a 3, and cannot be modified to a value greater than 3
3) your defense is modified by -2
4) your attack is modified by +2
5) your damage is modified by +1
I did not let the players know anything about the robot. The first time one of them picked it up, I said their character felt both vulnerable and powerful at the same time.
On the roof around the robot (to start) were 12 HDC Troopers. They represent a corrupt military branch in Japan who is trying to collect the alien artifact (droid). They will shoot at anything that comes within range.
My goal is not to kill the players, but simply set-up a harassing obstacle on the way to the droid. Like in the comics, the teams of heroes/villains should simply mow the poor soldiers down.
When the game began it was early night time (in the scenario). I started a counter. The following information was NOT given to the players. They never knew what was going to happen. Here are the triggers:
After 6 turns or when all of the HDC Troopers are dead, whichever comes first: There was no moon out tonight, clouds cover the stars (Deep Shadows BFC in effect). If any HDC Troopers are alive, they are all mysteriously slain. 5 members of the Hand appear (they will surround the droid as best as possible).
A new counter begins.
After 3 members of the Hand are killed, every time a member of the Hand is KOed, 2 members of the Hand take its place. This lasts for 5 turns.
Based on the new counter, 6 turns later Elektra appears with 5 members of the Hand.
And that's pretty much it. Again, my goal wasn't to kill anyone with the Hand. Heroes/Villains are supposed to beat up ninjas that are raining from the skies. Whenever a ninja would go down and 2 would take its place, I had a focus on "fun" rather than "strategic" when placing them.
Eventually they KOed all of the ninjas and Elektra, and it became a free-for-all to grab the droid. I then just hung around to watch the final battles.
