View Full Version : Which is your favorite Heroclix set since the introduction of White Powers?

Back in the days of Infinity Challenge and Hypertime, it was always stated that the game would stay simple, i.e. card-free. Of course, we all wanted "comic accurate" more than "simple", and so White Powers were introduced.

Since that change, which set has been your favorite and why?

I'm still digging Hammer of Thor due to the triumphant return of generics that kick butt and the "minion" mechanic. Plus, HoT Thor and Captain America are great examples of how "white" powers can improve a figure's comic book accuracy.

White powers in Hammer of Thor were distributed only when necessary, they did not "break" any characters, are easy to understand, and fun to use.

HA is hands down my favorite set ever....and I own full collections of all Marvel REV/U, CUR/SR sets!

M&M. Storm was the proof that SPs are a valid mechanic.

this is a hard one. I really enjoy most of those sets. But I guess I'm going to have to go with Secret Invasion. All that Skrull love plus an Awesome Iron Man.

Crisis! I think most of the sets after Avengers are pretty darned good (BatB was a bit of a step down, but not much) btu Crisis stands out as my favorite.

For me it's a hard one between Mutations and Monsters and Hammer of Thor.

Mutations and monsters had white powers mostly on figures who needed them. (I said mostly, don't bring up Jean Grey's outwit) In addition, MuMo had other figures who were excellent even without White Powers (Brood for example)

Hammer of Thor proved that they know where to and where not to place some SPs. Female Loki is awesome without SPs.

I voted Mutations and Monsters, as it gave me two Hulks that can get across the board without being slaughtered in two turns.

Crisis. It was the first set I collected seriously and I think the pieces and their powers are great.

This was a hard pick for me. I really liked all the sets from Mutations and Monsters, to HoT, about equally. They were all really good, hell great even.

In the end, I chose HoT because it was the 'Legacy' set of Marvel. Great dials from start to end, great character selection, awesome generics, great sculpts and it hailed the return of clix after it was thought long dead.

Crisis had an awesome Black Adam that was almost immediately outshined by a quarter dozen Supermen, so I ended up going with Hammer of Thor. My favorite Avenger and probably my favorite character period gets practically a whole set devoted to his world. I never thought I'd see Baldur or the Warriors Three in clix form!

"Just because some people in the White Powers movement have claimed Thor and Odin as symbols, that doesn't mean..."

"Ms. LaTella, we're not talking about the White Power movement. We're talking about White Powers on HeroClix dials."

"Oh! That's different! Nevermind."

Still had nothing on Origin, which is a perfect set.

I went with Mutations & Monsters; great sculpts, good variety of figures (though I think we're all still waiting on an X-Men First Class Angel) and solid special powers.

This said, I spent more $$ on Crisis than any other set. Darn game-altering chase figures got me into a spending frenzy.

Generally, I'm happy whenever a new set is released, and particularly happy when it's Marvel!

Secret Invasion had everything I want in a set. Good mix of characters (including a variety of headliners), nice theme tie-in, new mechanic that actually worked (humans vs skrulls), lots of mid to powerhouse level pieces, SRs worthwhile getting, accompanied a starter w/LEs, and even 2 playable chase figs that could easily be resisted.

Runner up would have to be HoT. For a long time I've wanted a set that emphasized stats over powers and for the most part that's what the Asgardians are; god warriors. The only thing that taints my vote was the god-packs.

i can't bring myself to buy secret invasion anymore. it was a great set by all accounts, but when you open a pack and pull 4 doubles, you just start to hate the set. (same thing happened w/justice league:ermm:)

This is why I won't "chase the chase" with older sets. I won't necessarily do it with newer sets either, but I'll buy an odd pack here and there to get a Rock Troll or Assassin.

I found the last option confusing. My all time favorite set was Origin and overall preferred the older sets, does that mean that I shouldn't answer the question?

Of the new sets, I've most enjoyed Arkham Asylum and Hammer of Thor.

Crisis. It's simply got the most clix that I use on a regular basis.

After Crisis the order is probably:

Arkham Asylumn
Secret Invasion
HoT
Justice League
Edit - Mutations and Monsters - I knew I'd leave one out :)
Avengers
BatB

All of the above sets are good (well, BatB is mediocre in comparison with the others, even Avengers), and all of them have figures that I love, but Crisis is a little above the rest. Black Adam and Sinestro are two of my favorite villains, and Crisis gave me GREAT representations of both. I've always loved the Metal Men, Deathstroke, the Fearsome Five (hopefully someday we'll get a decent Gizmo :( ), Darkseid, Teen Titans, Nightwing, GREEN ARROW, not one but two great Green Lanterns...yeah, Crisis for me!

The question is which is your favorite set that was released after SPs were introduced into the game, not which set is your all time favorite.

From the OP:

"Since that change, which set has been your favorite and why?"

Origin was before the change, so it's not a valid option.

And yes, I get that the wording is slightly confusing. :)

As much as I hate to say it, being a big Marvel fan and all, I have to admit, Crisis is the best set released since the introduction of Special "White" Powers. Hammer Of Thor is a very close second though.

Crisis just had so many playable and cool figures in it. It also had some of the best sculpting that any heroclix set has ever seen. 2 great and very sought after chase, decent LEs, good cardboard, a Anti-Monitor collecters set attached to it, and a very cool looking BiBtB figure. What more could you ask for out of a set?

Gotta say, though, BatB has REALLY grown on me. When I'm sitting there trying to decide which team to take to a tourney, out of the 7 - 10 teams I've built from ONE SET, I'd call that a win.

In my mind the only thing that sets Hammer of Thor apart from Crisis being the set I like more, is because indomitable came out after Crisis, and it truly is probably my favorite new power.

I was just thinking of posting a poll like this, but it looks like someone else beat me to it!

I picked Secret Invasion. I've enjoyed all of the new sets, and I really, really liked HOT for the sheer volume of playable characters and all the minions. I also really liked it for the fact that it has been the most cohesive "theme" set yet released (34 characters with an Asgardian theme). I voted for SI for several reasons:

1. Great comic-event tie-in that was released at just the right time (unlike the yet-to-be-released Watchmen set).
2. Lots of Skrulls (12)!
3. Some fun characters that I was waiting for to see the light of day (Impossible Man, Howard the Duck, the Power Pack, Mephisto, Mystic Doom).
3. Nearly 2/3 of the characters in this set (39) had never before been made. I wish more sets were like this...
4. Lots of Marvel Knights character with the useful wildcard TA.
5. Introduction of Indomitable.
6. A few EXTREMELY useful characters that make teams everywhere (Namor, Ms. Skrullvel, Dr. Strange, Iron Fist, Gamora).
7. Best box art of any set, in my opinion.
8. Duos that make perfect sense (Cloak & Dagger, Power Man & Iron Fist).
9. Prize LEs were great variants of the FF.
10. Nice sculpts and decent paint jobs (unlike TB&TB).

Arkham Asylum, by far. Lot's of awesome characters like: Robin, Zoom, Joker, GCD, Question AND THEE BEST LE's!! That set is what got me into the game!

Other than the very disappointing BATB set all of the sets since and including Avengers have been nothing less than outstanding. Hopefully we see a return to form and start a new streak of 7 great sets with WOS and DC75.

Mutation and monsters, Green scar as a rare, enough said.

I don't understand how you can pick Secret Invasion. It had the worst sculpts since Hypertime, maybe the worst ever.
I also don't have a lot of love for Crisis, most of the commons and uncommons were crappy b-list characters. I think I'm still mad that I bought a brick of Crisis and pulled King & Queen as my SR and no Green Lanterns.

I should shut up, I just bought 5 boosters and got 1 non-dupe. So I'm feeling kind of pissy.

My top 3:

1) Hammer of Thor (which I obviously voted for)
2) Arkham Asylum
3) Secret Invasion

Mine would be:

1) Hammer of Thor (Great generic/minion mechanics, hilariously fun figs like Volstagg and Heimdall, and a GOOD Thor as a Common)

2) Crisis (Awesome Chase figs, great representations of Green Arrow and Green Lantern, but the BIBTB fiasco sucked and teams like the Metal Men and the Royal Flush gang required you to pull SRs to have the whole team)

3) Mutations and Monsters (Possibly the greatest BIBTB figure ever, TWO near-perfect Hulk pieces, the best generic ever [Cukoos], but half the set was lackluster pieces like Pete Wisdom, Zombie Iron Man, Maverick, and Dazzler. And a SR generic [Warskrull] is just unforgivable.)

I can sum up my hatred of Secret Invasion in two words: Power Pack. Getting #### Commons is one thing. Getting 40 unplayable Commons that aren't even usable for mod-fodder is a crime against humanity.

I loved the skrulls in Secret Invasion! This was a set that finally bridged the gap between current comic book continuity and heroclix, be looking for similar trends with newer sets. I also loved Hammer of thor, tons of generics that are actually playable and worth the points, not to mention god packs made it a lot easier to collect the set, if you were lucky enough to pull one.

Secret Invasion: I love Spidey, Strange, Thing, Doom, Namor, etc.

Granted, I didn't like how out of hand the special powers got - thankfully they got toned down a bit with Hammer of Thor and Brave and the Bold.

I loved Crisis and Justice League, but both were lacking key abilities like Indomitable and sharpshooter to really make some of those figures shine.

Hammer of Thor, NOT for the characters, but for the dials. I am so tired of all the DC clicks being superior to Marvel (19 defenses and such). HOT brought some respect back to Marvel clicks. Not only did we see some 19 defenses, but nearly every piece had an 11 attack, which is awesome. HOT has the most Solid clicks out of the Marvel sets, that's for sure.
