In honor of all our soldiers on Memorial Day, here's a quick look at the most recent incarnation of DC's Freedom Fighters! Despite nearly being wiped out by the Secret Society of Super Villains, visit this turn at COMIC ACCURATE: DC EDITION to play a team this weekend!

A team that first debuted in the '70's, their most recent go at team-forming went disastrously but that won't stop us from building and running the Heroclix version! To read more about their short history, go here: The Freedom Fighters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Fighters_%28comics%29).

With the scant figures available to us with the Freedom Fighters keyword, we can throw down a semi-competitive team that's definitely going to be counting on a lot of factors, the most important one being your dice rolling!

For starters, we'll kick off with the leader of the FF, man you don't want to say no to when he asks for your service, UNCLE SAM:

(Damage) No...NO!: When the Human Bomb uses Pulse Wave and targets two or more characters, you can choose not to replace his damage value (using his unmodified damage value for the attack); if you do, after the attack is resolved deal Human Bomb unavoidable damage equal to his unmodified damage value.

This scant 4-man army comes out to 352, plenty of room for 40 points' worth of feats and bystanders to round out the squad.

Strategy would definitely depend on Uncle Sam getting his transporter Move & Attacks in every time, which shouldn't be a problem with his Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor SP. When he turns into a giant with As Big As My Country, be sure to tie up the opposition with Phantom Lady and her dual-incap lest Uncle Sam turns into a huge beacon...for the opponent's rangers. The Ray will be flitting about with his HSS and hitting soft targets, especially those who can give Sam trouble, carrying the Bomb for meat shielding. Very precarious is this team but should rolls go your way, this team will win you a couple!

I've played this team before, minus the Human Bomb and with the Vet Phantom Lady, and it's like playing Seven Soldiers. Really fun, and with the right strategy it can surprise most players.

I was really disapointed when the new set didnt have a new member to add of them and the Great 10.

Black Condor would be awesome.

I think I've played a 400 point team before with Sam, Ray, Bomb, R Phantom Lady and Plas. Didn't work out so well, IIRC.

The biggest problem for the team is they don't really compliment each other all that well. The defenses of the JSA TA guys aren't that strong unless Sam takes some damage, which you don't want because he's going to be your best attacker. Even moreso if you have Contingency Plan on Sam to help the already weak attacks of the other characters. Like Ray, for example. Best range on the team, but a very weak AV by today's standards.

But if we're playing "sans Plas" and throwing in Vet Phantom Lady; You could throw Auto Regen on Ray and Sam (hoping you won't have to use those feats), stick Takedown and Running Start on Phantom Lady, that'll leave five more points for feats? Double-Time on Sam? Dunno.

I've just realised how great Human Bomb is for 45 points. If you ignore his Pulse Wave power, he's really really tough and consistent for such a cheap price tag - and can break invulnerability on the first click.

Can't you just turn off the power when needed? I mean, the power isn't non-optional, right?

I think a build that included Max Mercury on it would be reasonable since he was initially a Quality character also.

You really can't do a comic accurate version of the new Freedom Fighters since there's currently only eight figures with the keyword. Three of those are the R-E-V of Phanton Lady (and it's not even the current version), and two are Plastic Man, who's not on the current team.

Which characters should WizKids make next to fill out the team? Firebrand? Doll Man? Red Bee? Miss America? Black Condor? A version of Phantom Lady that can teleport her teammates?

I don't expect we'll see any of these soon since none are really A-List characters but who knows.

I always thought Liberty Belle would be a good addition to the Freedom Fighters, in the comics and in 'clix.

Referencing special powers that give the giant ability, yes you can turn them off and "Lose" the giant ability. While the giant ability itself is non-optional, the special power is still optional and can be countered or turned off as normal. I like SPs that give giant, makes it much better!

I want to cook up a scenario that has Uncle Sam, The Ray, Phantom Lady,
the Human Bomb, Plastic Man, Max Mercury and the three Blackhawks we've got, against a team of Marvel villains. I had Psycho Man in mind but I haven't decided who else I'd team him with.

The 3 Phantom Ladies are supposed to represent each one that was on the team, just not that well with the latters case.

My friend plays the All New Atom mercenaryd to one of them for Doll Man, dont have a good representation for the new Black Condor yet, and you can always use the Marvel Firebrand.

I was big fan growing up back in the bicentenial days.

Still wish we had Doll Man and Black Condor.

I did play an interesting team once pre-Crisis....

Robot Man
several Blackhawks

(basically a back-up judge team for the guys with the bye)....I managed to beat a very good player playing Capt. and Mary Marvel and some friends.

I'm REALLY (*REALLY*) hoping for at least a couple more Freedom Fighters in the DC 75th Anniversary set. Not giving Max Mercury the keyword was a major screwup IMO, but there are a lot of keyword issues with BatB, IMO. For new characters, my order of preference would be Miss America, Black Condor, Red Bee (either one), Firebrand, and Doll Man, then others like Invisible Hood and Manhunter, Jester, Alias the Spider...

Very disappointed that the Max Mercury/Quicksilver piece from BatB didn't have the Freedom Fighters keyword. Like reddy said, he was a Quality character and Roy Thomas and crew retro'd him into it via All Star Sqdn. just like they did Plastic Man and a few others. Not sure why Plas gets the keyword and Max Mercury doesn't? I'm sure a judge would go along with it if a player really wants to add him into their team and can confirm that he was a member.

Anyone Mod an Atom into Dollman out there?
