My friend and I had a disagreement about Enchantment and Its use with Running Shot. If someone could give me a ruling on this situation it would be greatly appreciated. Here is what the map looked like:

T = Thor (V)
N = Nightmare (U)
S = She-Hulk (V)

(Beginning of action)

T

N

S

(After Running Shot)

NT

S

Thor begins 2 squares away from Nightmare (not adjacent) and declares a Running Shot. Thor moves 2 squares adjacent to Nightmare and makes a Ranged attack against She-Hulk as part of his Running Shot. Does Thor gain Enchantment from Nightmare even though they were not adjacent for the entire attack?

Thank you for helping us with this ruling.

You would have to start adjacent to gain the enhancement since once you start the move part of running shot you cant stop midway to declare enhancement.

For Enhancement to be used, the figure possessing the power must be adjacent to the ranged attacker when he begins his ranged combat attack. It is not the action which matters, but the ranged attack, and so Thor can run next to Nightmare to gain the benefit of Enhancement. If he began adjacent to Nightmare and decided to use Running Shot to leave adjacency, on the other hand, he will not receive any benefit.

That makes enhancment much better than the shield team.

The SHIELD team ability works exactly the same way.

Well, the SHIELD ability has one distinct advantage... Being a team ability, it can't be Outwitted like Enhancement can.

[color=invisible]In regards to Running Shot timing[color] The SHIELD team ability works exactly the same way. [color=invisible]It also requires an action and token to be assigned, whereas Enhancement is free. However, it cannot be Outwitted, true, and can work with RCE.[color]

One additional thought -- Enchantment is an optional ability according to the PAC. Since Enchantment is not always *on*, the player must declare that it is being used before an action begins. Since Thor is in the middle of an action using Running Shot, can Nightmare 's optional ability of Enchantment be activated?

I thought that once you started an action with a figure you were not able to use another ability or action until the current action had ended.

Anyone else have any additional thoughts?

Oh yeah... make that TWO distinct advantages for the SHIELD ability! Can't be Outwitted and works with RCE. Awesome!

The way I would think it works is that Thor could gain the benefit of Enhancement in the action described because enhancement does not require an action just B2B contact. If a power is optional I beleive it is considered to be on unless turned off. However I would not think that the Shield team ability works the same way because it does require a move action and it would need to be done in the middle of Thor's action. Since you can't take an action in the middle of another action, doesn't make sense that you could do it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

To a degree, the SHIELD ability already requires that the figure act during the action of another figure, and so is already an anomaly in terms of timing. Based on that, Chapeau related that the SHIELD team ability would also be able to occur mid-action in the instance of Running Shot, so that the Running Shot figure only needs to begin their attack adjacent to the SHIELD Agent, not their action.

Thanx for clearing that up. I appreciate it. Makes the Shield team ability even cooler.

so that the Running Shot figure only needs to begin their attack adjacent to the SHIELD Agent, not their action

I was about to say something here, but I guess this could be read out of context....

Meaning.... Running Shot... you can move half your Speed value (rounded up)... it's at this point that the requirements for adjacency to the SHIELD team member must be met. Then the attack will take place as normal.

Unless they changed something again, this is the way it is.
Am I missing something?

Enchantment is an optional ability

I don't know what game you are playing, but there is no Enchantment in Heroclix. The ENHANCEMENT power is what everyone else is assuming you are talking about.
