View Full Version : Eye of Agamatto Issue

Hey, first time poster but a quite frequent lurker. I find a lot of stuff on here interesting but don't really have much to contribute or any questions; at least until now. I used to play Heroclix back around the time when Ultimates was coming out. Just recently I started getting back into it with a friend of mine that played back then too.

Dr. Strange has always been my favorite comic hero so I was pretty excited once I got to looking at the newer sets and discovered his figure from the Secret Invasion set. To keep a long story short I tracked down a single of the fig and first game test driving him against my friend ran into some trouble over his Eye of Agamatto power.

The main issue revolved around Eye of Agamatto and Stealth. I thought I was pretty sure on how it worked. I looked around here a bit reading up on the figure and everything I saw suggested he could see characters that have Stealth due to ignoring Hindering Terrain and even on other places saw it listed as a great anti-stealth piece.

My friend's issue with it stems from two points:

1) The wording for Eye of Agamatto compared to the feat Trick Shot (which arguably both of us have seen a lot of people compare EoA to).

Eye of Agamatto: Dr. Strange ignores the effects of characters and hindering terrain (including team abilities that give hindering terrain bonuses) when determining line of fire.

Trick Shot: Choose a character. When making an attack from a square that is not adjacent to an opposing character, the character ignores Stealth and team abilities that duplicate the effects of Stealth, and it ignores characters and hindering terrain for line of fire purposes.

He asked why Trick Shot explicitly mentions Stealth yet EoA does not?

2) He asked why doesn't the Stealth power already render the Hindering as Blocking? Clarifying on that he said that it is like saying that one power is superior to the other because you could say the EoA ignores the hindering object which empowers stealth, but you can argue right back that the stealth power says it causes the hindering to be blocking terrain.

====

I'm not really sure about the first point... I've just been getting back into Heroclix so I'm not really up on things. As for the second the way I understood the power is that he ignores the hindering terrain as being there so essentially there's nothing there to activate Stealth on from his point of view.

I searched the forum here some but never found any threads that specifically hit on these (most seemed to be about ranged attacks while based instead) and I'd like to get some input/answers if anyone is willing to chime in. I'd hate to mis-use my favorite character or have to avoid using him ever due to disputed issues.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long winded post lol

Eye of Agamotto was printed more recently. They figured the wording helped to clarify things a little better that way. It also helps to nerf things that could occur in the future if there is any bonus that happens as a result from terrain.

Dr. Strange Ignores stealth. Stealth uses hindering to get the bonus of not being able to draw line of fire. Dr. Strange stoots at someone like the hindering terrain isn't there like the Ultimates or Superman Ally team ability.

btw, stealth doesn't say anything about blocking terrain. I know semantics, but this game is built on wording of powers.

Well this is my interpretation of Doc Stange

Basically, the wording on Eye of Agamotto makes it superior to Trick Shot. While Trick Shot ignores Stealth, EoA ignores the terrain itself, allowing you to see the guy trying to use stealth, as well as ignoring the hindering terrain modifier when attacking anybody else.

pretty much EoA ignores hindering and its effects, as well as characters.

Stealth needs the effect of hindering to activate it. The reason as to why Trick Shot explicitly states Stealth, may be a ruling that was made back when Trick Shot was made.

It's already been answered, but I thought I'd quote stealth to help out the discussion

From the FF PAC
Any line of fire drawn to this character that crosses hindering terrain, including a square of hindering terrain occupied by this character, is blocked.

As others have pointed out, stealth causes lines of fire to be blocked when the LoF crosses hindering.

By ignoring hindering terrain, Eye of Agamatto, Superman Ally, and Ultimates effectively ignore stealth.

And to further clarify any confusion there about blocking terrain, you'll notice that the last words are "is blocked" not referencing "blocking terrain" at all. That's where we always got hung up on it the first few games.

I've been busy and haven't had time to get online and check, but I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that answered.

I talked it over with my friend and your answers pretty much cleared everything up; I really appreciate it.

Your friend can now watch his Batman figure get blasted. Enjoy.
