Howdy, all! I'm a novice painter, still getting the kinks worked out and all that, and I'm looking for some help. Specifically with chest emblems. Folks like Superman, Batman, the Green Lantern Corps, and the Sinestro Corps all have exceptionally detailed chest emblems. What's the best method for recreating those on a 'clix sculpt with the best possible detail? I'm working on a repaint right now, and want to use a custom emblem for it.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!

example the superman logo you first paint the diamond and them work your way in. for teh diamond start by painting the widest part first whcih si the V (bottom hal of the diamond or w.e) then draw the rest. that makes sure you dont draw the top centre line of it to big etc.

then when painting the actual S inside teh diamond thingy. focus on painting the outline of the s (the outer edges) then fill in the S afterwards. It helps to visualize in your head what it should look like. then do it.

the real key to painting emblems like that is a steady hand and having a solid mental picture of emblem you want to paint.

another example si the batman emblem (the all black symbol not the yellow with a mini black one inside) you start off by deciding how wide you want it then paint the outer semi circle like shape of it on each side then the top centre of it then work from the centre outwards. that probably sounds confusing but basically the key is to know where to start and where to go next with logic.

its hard to explain in words lol.

so to sum it up.

1. think logically on what to paint first. (like example with superman logo where you would paint the bottom V shaped part of diamond first so the rest of the diamond becomes easy to paint. etc.)

2. having a very steady hand and visualize the logo on the figure as your painting it and paint slowly and carefully

Addition by Subtraction

Depends on the logo you want to paint on the exact technique. For example if you want to paint the Batman logo you would do the following:
1) Paint the logo as best as possible. Here you are just setting the boundary of the logo and positioning on the chest. When you're done you should be able to tell where the head and end of the wings are.
2) Take gray paint and paint along the edges of the logo straightening up the edges and creating sharp points.

You should practice this first on a piece of paper or better yet if you have a dry erase board.
If you have access to a dry erase board color a solid blotch of color on the board. Then run you finger or eraser along the edges to create straight edges until you create a square. Keep up this technique to create or shapes/logos.

Another issue are multiple colors.

Superman:
1) Solid blotch of yellow roughly in the logos shape (thin your paint down and do multiple layers of yellow until it is smooth and solid) Now your background is done and your red will show up better. Keep this yellow around.
2) Paint the Red S. This is the hardest part of the process and no you can't do it perfect.
3) Take your yellow paint again and smooth out the edges of the S. When you are done you should have a nice S sitting in yellow.
4) Take Red paint and create the inner diamond by painting straight lines. Do not worry about the outside. You are encasing the S.
5) Take blue paint and paint along the edges. This will sharpen the edges and give you your Superman logo.

If you are looking for the best way to duplicate these sorts of emblems, the most accurate way to do it would be not to paint it at all. These figures from WK have decals which have been adhered to the figure rather than painted on. Waterslide decals (like those which come with plastic model kits) can now be made at home with special paper you can order, and your computer's printer. All you have to do is find an image of the emblem (easy as can be online) and you're good to go.
