Ok so here's the story, my friend made two 300 point teams and stated that these two teams could beat any team I could make in both value and playability. While I doubt I could actually build a team (with the figs I own) that would beat his value wise, I was determined to make one that could beat both his teams. So during a night of drinking and watching the big bang theory I pieced together a team with which to play against his two teams.
My Team:
OR Johnny Quick 77pts ($7)
SI Spider-Girl 77pts ($5)
HoT Moonstone 76pts ($3)
Vet Destiny ($0.60)
AA The Question ($0.35)
Total Points: 296
Total value: $15.95
Opponent team #1:
BatB Nekron 146pts ($77)
BatB Black Hand 11pts ($77)
Rookie Lockjaw 24pts ($1)
LE Jane Foster 16pts ($40)
Total Points: 297
Total Value: $195
I took down his entire team only losing Moonstone
2nd Team:
Batman and Catwoman 142pts ($30)
Lamppost Batman 120pts ($80)
AA The Question 37pts ($0.35)
Total Points: 299
Total Value: $110.35
Once again I won, this time only losing moonstone and spider-girl
just goes to show that expensive doesn't always mean good ;)

You're definitely right, greater cost does not necessarily equate to greater effectiveness (except for chase KC Supes, he is in a broken category all by himself!! ;)).
I think this is an example of how effective a balanced team can be. Johnny Quick and Spider-Girl provide good Close Combat ability, Moonstone is an effective Ranged Combat piece, The Question is an awesome Outwit-er, and both JQ and Destiny provide Probability Control.
Nice design!

there's never been any doubt at all generally speaking, that pieces you're gonna pay out your behind for are gonna ensure your win. it's not a huge surprise in at least the first case that you took that win.
Whoever built that second team however has some serious problems right off the bat... I'd not be caught dead running both Lampost Bats and Bat and Cat in a 300 point game. either take one, or the other... toss in Captain Gordon, Alpha Alfred, and a few bits and pieces here and there...
if taking the bat and cat route... perhaps.....
Bat and Cat
The Joker (AA SR)
Alpha Alfred
GCPD
yes, alfred's going to be target numero uno, as any medic is always going to be. so keep him with the Joker, in a distanced position that Joker can get his shots off, and alfred's stuck against a wall or somesuch... a place that if he's attacked, Joker's PC can see to force a re-roll... AND force the character rushing in to have to hang around... and next turn, take that wonderful poison damage! Late dial, the Bat and Cat would do well to call the raving lunatic up to them in the event they are based up, and he can again do his poison trick... oooor, go crazy with blades. the GCPD can push ahead to willpower and plasticity to hold any non-phase/lc/hssers in place too... the only downside is that putting the bat and cat out on mostly their own, they run the risk of not being able to get back to Alfred for their medical needs... but them's the risks you take.
for Lampost Bats,
Lampost Bats + Lunge and Protected ( with lunge gone in modern age, he suffers slightly, albeit not make or break in most people's eyes)
Captain Gordon (fills the roll of Cat and Bat's summon or set trap, and also adds in enhancement)
Hitman- Stealth, Sharpshooter, able to make 2 diff attacks...and capable of also lending a hand by copying the PD ability, OR if his stealth were cut, swapping to Bat TA from the get-go
GCPD: Self Explanatory
Alfred: Keeps the fellas alive, hitman particularly, since a failed SS roll puts him potentially too far down the dial, despite psychic blast, to hit frequently.
as for the Black Lantern team... sorry, but... Nekron's a joke by comparison to the Manhunter. just that simple. Jane Foster's an easy target, and frankly I'd rather spend my money on a cheaper healer, who may not have willpower... but is far more survivable at least against range.
