CHECKMATE
Keyword(s): Checkmate
Cost: 6
Minion: Kings and Queens and Bishops. When another friendly character using this team ability and with a point value greater than 50 is within 8 squares, this character can be given a power action to use Perplex if it can’t already use Perplex.

My team has a Checkmate Agent (with Checkmate ATA) and a non-Checkmate keyword wildcard figure that's greater than 50pts.

Q: Can the Agent use the ability (power action - perplex) if the wildcard fig copies the ATA and is 8 squares away from said agent?
I would say yes but i need a legit confirmation. thanks, guys!

Yes.

ATAs can be copied by wild cards, and as long as the wild card is within 8 squares of the Agent, the Agent may use Perplex.

Just a heads up though: The wording of the Checkmate ATA was changed in the latest edition of the Player's Guide. It now applies to all figures with the keyword, regardless of cost.

So would you need to leave six points of room on your team for Checkmate to apply to them?

If you mean, "Do I need to assign the ATA to all Checkmate characters on my team?" the answer is, "Yes."

From the player's guide:

Alternate Team Abilities must be used and costed for all qualified team members on your force.

If, instead, you mean, "Does the wild card have to pay points?" then the answer is, "Not unless the wild card actually has the Checkmate keyword."
