A while ago we had another musical showdown that featured songs with the same name but different writers/performers. They were one-offs and not done in conjunction with the Rock Wars. Please listen to all the songs, even the ones that you haven't necessarily heard before and then pick your favorites. Some songs may only have two competitors and some may have as many as four or five or six or even seven max. I'll try to weed out the pretenders from the contenders.

Our 58th match-up is (IN) ANOTHER TIME (with thanks to the AlienFlanders for this title)

As usual, there are a lot of songs on this one, but this will make for a nice time killer while you're working or blogging or whatever it is you do. Just sit back and listen. Give each song a chance, and then decide.

The last match-up featured the song Jessica and the big surprise was Wolfgang Petry and his sex-stash moving up and taking the #4 spot. In other News, Allman Brothers Band beat Bloodrock for the top spot by 1 measly point.

In the immortal words of DTM - "So what say you all." Who will be the winner in this latest match-up of Same Name/Different Song? Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite as there'll be a points system to decide winners & losers. Also, if you like, put in comments about the songs - good or bad, it's all cool.

1) Motorhead- It's a Motorhead song, and you pretty much get what you expect with these guys. That's enough to get them to the top in this round.

2) Yngwie Malmsteen Yay! Another song that I actually like. Not Yngwie's best, and not good enough to knock out Motorhead here, but certainly better than the rest of the field.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Jodie Simmons- A toss up between her and the next artist, really.

4) Sade- As noted, she could have been second, but she gets third and that's life.

5) Sagittarius- I didn't like this song at all. That gives you a hint about what I think about what I ranked lower.

6) Ed Guy- This was just bad. B-A-D bad. Wow. That was bad.

7) Pearls Before Swine- Make no mistake, they wouldn't have fared well, anyway, but when the video took a shot at both politics and religion, it dropped to the bottom of the list.

I do loves me my Wishbone Ash but it does seem like a stretch that would challenge Reed Richards, Elongated Man and Plastic Man to explain why they're in this match.

1. This slot reserved for Wishbone Ash if somebody can convince me it's supposed to be here.

2. Sagittarius - Never heard of these guys but I liked them.
3. Pearls Before Swine - See above
4. Motorhead - Triple H has pretty much ruined these guys for me, but this song ain't bad.
5. Sade - I always liked her.

6. Jodie Simmons - didn't like this at all.
7. Ed Guy - hated this!

There is a Wishbone Ash song called Another Time, unfortunately the links are misnamed and it doesn't appear to exist on youtube.

1. Motorhead
2. Sade
3. Yngwie Malmsteen
4. Pearls before Swine
5. Saggitarius
6. Jodie Simmons
7. Edguy

I grabbed the wrong wishbone ash song and now I can't find their version of another time :(

I'll replace it with Yngwie Malmsteen if I can't find it by the time I get to work.

OR, it would be great if ReadyEddy can head out to his Wizard van and grab one of his Wishbone Ash 8-tracks and make a Youtube recording for the song.

Somewhere, someone is saying...8-tracks? WTF?

Sorry RE, I couldn't find a link for the Ash. Swapped it out for Yngwie instead.

I figured out how I screwed that up too. It was after the LeBron James thing and being a South Floridian I was way too giddy with excitement and didn't notice there was no link for Another Time by Wishbone Ash. What I'm saying is, this was LeBron James' fault.

Motorhead - Now this is how you rock. Motorhead brings it, and it’s old school hard rock/heavy metal. I like the power of the tune.
Pearls Before Swine - I really dig acoustic based folk-rock and though I kind of missed this period of rock when these guys made records – I know, kind of hard to believe of this greybeard – I like what they do here. Listening to the guitar part you can see a guy like Nick Drake being influenced by them. Lyrically, it’s not bad at all. High marks all around.
Sade - The art of the female Jazz Vocalist is a lost art, but not on Sade. This is slow and sultry and plays to her range and style. I could listen to this at night while the rain hits the window.
Yngwie - Standard Yngwie stuff with the chunka-chunka rhythm guitar work and Yngwie’s neo-classical style soloing. This would score higher if it was Graham Bonnet’s rougher edged vox.
Edguy - Angel meet Journey meet Cinderella meet etc. Sad power ballad that reeked of wanting to be something more.
Sagittarius - I think this is weak 60s pop/bubblegum at best, and the bubblegum lost it’s flavor rather quickly.
Jodie Simmons - Totally not my thing. Reminded me of the type of song I’d hear at Disney’s Soaring ride when you’re actually in the building and looking at the pictures of planes on the wall.

Although I love my guitar heroes, Yngwie Malmstrom has yet to capture my imagination. rank him just under Sade in my list while I wistfully think of what could have been with Wishbone Ash.

Let's rank 'em!

Motorhead (Well, it ain't Ace of Spades, but few things are. How is possible that Lemmy can even talk at this point? It hurts my throat just listening to him.)

Pearls Before Swine (Huh. Between the name and the album cover, my expectation for this band's sound was *way* off. Fairly straightforward singer/songwriter stuff, but the production values were outstanding - and that goes a long way with me. I actually got out my good headphones to listen to this again.)

Sade (You know, it was really kind of unfair to release Soldier of Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR5_rTCi-Bo) as the first single from this album. I heard that, and I thought, "Hey, this is pretty cool. It's like Sade is covering Bjork or something." Sadly, the rest of the album does nothing to reinforce that comparison.)

Sagittarius (Before I clicked the link, I was betting myself that the album cover would feature ents or pegasi or rainbows - or, perhaps, some combination of the three. I'm going to give myself partial credit on that one.)

Yngwie Malmsteen (Okay, I can't really say why, but this song sounds just like Survivor's "Moment of Truth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqZQsv1QPA4)" to me. I know, they don't actually have a whole lot in common. But on first listen, I was trying to place where I'd heard it before. Initially, I'd convinced myself that it was a Frank Stallone track from Over the Top or something. I guess the intense '80s-ness of it - in spite of its actual release date - supercedes its musical value.)

Edguy (Holy cats, this is serious? I kept waiting for the Tenacious D-style punchline, where the song descends into a swirl of obscenity and power chords, and it just never came. Mad respect to the band logo and album cover, though. Both would totally fit on a Trapper Keeper containing D&D character sheets.)

Jodie Simmons (And just when I thought it couldn't get worse than Edguy, along comes this. Credit where it's due - that is the fullest sound I've ever heard from a Casio keyboard, and it's the tightest production one could hope to find at a mall recording studio.)

(In) Another Time

1. Pearls Before Swine - Cool stuff. Cool band name. Cool sound. Lyrically I can relate. I could put this into regular rotation in my playlist.

2. Motorhead - This is why Motorhead rules. Short and to-the-point hard rock songs that always sound good. I always wanted to hang out with Dio for a day. Now that that will never happen, I'd like to spend a day with Lemmy. I imagine we'd do things like go to a traveling carnival and try to out-do each other throwing darts at balloons. Of course, Lemmy would win. He then would offer his gigantic stuffed animal to the prettiest girl at the carnival and our day would end as he strands me to have an impromptu sexcapade with said twentysomething carnival-goer. Oh, Lemmy, it must rule to be you.

3. Sade - I dug it. It was a nice jazzy slow jam. Sade's voice has always been super-sexy. This was no exception. I wouldn't call this a classic, but it was still pretty darn good in my book.

4. Sagittarius - Cool and mellow, but kind of forgettable. Definitely not my favorite of the bunch.

5. Edguy - It's actually kind of sad that modern music no longer uses vocals like these. One thing about a lot of arena rock, prog rock, and hair bands is that their singers actually could sing REALLY well. This is a pretty good example. Nowadays, people might find this cheesy, but its actually a sweet song. The arrangement is beautiful, the vocals are excellent, and the sentiment is sweet. Ultimately, the song is forgettable, but I don't find it to be an epic failure.

6. Yngwie Malmsteen - I don't want to get attacked for this, but... I can't stand Yngwie. Sure, he can shred the guitar. I'll give him that. But his music ALWAYS bores me. Sorry. So sorry. Please move along, nothing to see here.

7. Jodie Simmons - No. What is this? An audition for Disney? No.

1. Yngwie Malmsteen - Of the lot, this is the one that I could see gong back to, to listen to it again
2. Motorhead - Not a huge fan the harder rock, but this was a good listen regardless.
3. Sagittarius - Moving from the stuff I liked to the stuff that was okay, but nothing I'd run out and get.
4. Pearls Before Swine - In much the same category as the above.
5. Sade - Thought I'd have ranker her higher, but honestly this one doesn't really do anything for me
6. Jodie Simmons - Now moving into the realm of the really pretty forgettable.
7. Edguy - Even more forgettable than the one above

Pearls before Swine - Not awesome but a decent enough track to lead this bunch of losers. And while this would have been first anyway, when the video took shots at both politics and religion it solidified its place at number one.

Motorhead - Metal is like the Mall Security guard of music, Metal thinks its tough and its friends are impressed by its blue belt in Hop-Ke-Do, but everyone else thinks its silly and laughs at how hard it tries. Motorhead is the perfect example of this for me. I find Motorhead hilarious, they are like a perfect caricature of what is so silly about metal. All of that said, I still don't hate their music and this is better than the rest of this very weak bunch.

Sade - I can appreciate why others like her, but I find her very boring.

Sagittarius - THis is not good, it is just not bad enough to be lower than the others.

Yngwie Malmsteen - I have never been at all impressed by Yngwie but this hunk of lame was even worse than I expected.

Edguy - Right from the first few notes I thought "yuck I am going to hate this" and then I totally did. A Power Rock Ballad without the power or the rock, is just a lame ballad with stupid lyrics.

Jodie Simmons - Oh my god this was awful. This was like the terrible credits music that plays in every otherwise awesome Japanese cartoon I have ever seen, only its even worse.
