Hey, I'm pretty new in the HC community, and me and my friends get annoyed with the maps that come with the starter set. They always start to fold up when we spread them out. Do you know how we can remedy this besides making our own boards?

ive heard of people laminating their maps what my group does is we set all our maps on a table and placed a bunch of heavy books on them by the next day, flat maps
Get a large piece of cardboard, or something else and glue the map on. You can only play one side but all the wrinkles are gone.
Or make your own map, I know you don't want to, but I made my own 3D map on a plank made my own street with photoshop and glued it on. I decorated it with lots of buildings (wich I also made), cars, roadblocks and firehydrants (from the toystore) to throw with and it's much more fun to play the game. Even my girlfriend enjoys the game now that she can sneak up behind me from a couple of trees, or throw a VW beetle on my Spider-man.:D

Lamination works like a charm, but be warned:
Go to a place like Kinko's or the equivalent for your lamination. Blueprint places have the same machine but charge four times the amount of a copy place (because they are selling to architects). You may find that a teacher supply place can do your lamination for you, but make SURE before you take your map that the machine is large enough to accomodate it without folding. I tried to save some pennies and found that the heat and the folding scarred up one side of my map pretty good...
I got the map for free, because she botched the job, but I'd rather have paid the buck per square foot and had a clean map.

Hi
To keep the maps flat I bought 2 sheets of clear perspex, 4 feet by 2 feet.
They fit in the car and can be put over any map.
You could even cut them down to 2 by 2 for easier storage.
Keeps the maps free from wear and tear and they can still be folded up when you have finished.
there was quite a discussion on laminating maps here a few months ago. It works well and looks nice; but be warned, most I've seen the maps have to be cut in half to go through the machine and it's fairly expensive here, $20 per map. If you have all of the maps this can get expensive. Another guy at my venue attached the map to a piece of foam-core board. Of course this only works for one side, you'll have to have another map to attach to the other side. I bought two sheets of plexi-glass at Home Depot for about $4 each. They aren't quite large enough to cover the entire map, but usually only the starting area is uncovered. They hold the map flat and aren't too difficult to transport.
