View Full Version : 2010 T-Shirt Design Contest!
http://www.hcrealms.com/images/template_sm.jpg (http://www.hcrealms.com/temp/t-shirt_template.jpg)2010 T-Shirt Design Contest!
It's been a little over 3 years since we held our last T-Shirt Design Contest, and with HeroClix roaring back into our lives, it seems that everyone wants to show their love for not only HeroClix, but for the HCRealms Community! We Love You Too!
We had some amazing submissions last time (2007 Finalists (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=198576)), and expect this time to be no different! So sharpen your pencils, fire up your computers, and let the Contest begin!
Come up with an <i>AWESOME</i> HCRealms.com t-shirt design. Something that not only captures what this community is all about; but could be easily recognizable by everyone else at tournaments, cons, or just around town.
Here are some guidelines:
Please use the template (http://www.hcrealms.com/temp/t-shirt_template.jpg) provided. You can send the image only, as long as you indicate where on the shirt it should go.
This is for the Front ONLY. The Back is branded with the standard "Powered by RealmWorx" mark.
Please stay "PG-13"; and refrain from using any words that would be deemed 'inappropriate' by normal standards.
Obviously it should include "HCRealms" visibly, which can be done in ANY font/design.
You can submit up to 3 designs per person.
You can design it for ANY COLOR shirt you want. Black is probably the preferred 'gamer color' though.
<b>IMPORTANT</b>: No Copyrighted Images (ie. Marvel and/or DC). That means no clips of existing art, and no drawings of copyrighted characters. NO EXCEPTIONS. If your entry includes a copyrighted image, it will be deleted without consideration.
Submission Deadline: July 31, 2010
After the deadline, the staff will select what we believe to be the top designs (based on the number of submissions). Those designs will be voted on by the community for 1 week, after which we will announce the winner and send the design to print (turn-around is normally 7 days).
But hey! There are prizes too!
The winning designer will receive:
- $100 USD!
- 2 Free 'HCRealms' t-shirts
- Adamantium Donor status for 1 year (or one additional year if you are already a donor)
Additionally; All finalists will also get a free 'HCRealms' t-shirt.
Please submit all designs to: contest@hcrealms.com (Subject: 2010 HCRealms T-Shirt Contest)
Disclaimer: All entries become the property of RealmWorx, LLC. However, if we do use your (non-winning) design elsewhere, we'll make sure compensate you.

PhotoShop or GIMP is what I normally use for all artwork. I'm going to be doing inventory of the previous shirt tonight and see how many we have left. :) Maybe I'll throw that into the prize pool as well (depending on size).
Hey, Typhon! Where did you get such a great idea?

Ah gotcha; I thought you were complaining it was too long. I tried to make it so it would overlap 2 weekends ... depending on where everyone is at at their stage of design; I would accept partially completed works (inks, missing colors) ... but only if the final is done before we allow the community to vote on it (assuming it would get to the next round just in the inks alone).

We will see as to the quality of the entries. If there aren't enough to select a finalist pool; I'll extend the time ... but I certainly wouldn't count on it.
In the end we are looking for the best design, not one that can be made fastest.. so there is some flex room. The time limit is so that we can get it into print and into your hands ASAP.

rep my good man. win or not id want this shirt!
That bottom section is really hard (and expensive) to print in bulk; but the top part is so simple (since it's only 1 color).
As for a lot of the other submissions; please keep in mind that this is a t-shirt design contest, and not all designs can be printed properly on a t-shirt. I'm really hoping that this weekend a lot of people will take the time to submit designs ... we have about 20+ so far, but that's not near as large of a pool as I'd like. Thanks!

Just sent in my three... Now it's just a waiting game...
A lot of the shirts won't translate well to an affordable t-shirt (with a run of ~ 250-500).
*edit; I didn't have time to review them last night ... hopefully tonight! We've had 25 people submit; anything from 1-3 designs each ... so probably 60 designs. IF I had to be honest; I would say that only 20 would work well as a shirt; and less then that being something that would actually be printed.

It's more like I don't feel comfortable paying $100 AND investing in the the overhead needed to print ~ 250 shirts that no one will buy AND ruining the HCRealms.com brand.
Looking at all the designs I pretty already know which 3 will get the highest number of votes ... but I really prefer there to be 8-10 finalists. Make it more sporting!

I disagree. It's unfair for those who actually worked to design something just to get beat by a design that won a few years ago.
Keep it an option, as the runner up of the last event, but don't throw it back into the competition.
It'd be like entering Mona Lisa in modern painting competitions. Or comparing the invention of the light bulb with the newer "inventions" of today.

How about one with innuendo, like "Ask me about my Man-Thing", and it shows a picture of Ted Sallis.
Or "I flamed VGA and all I got was this stupid t-shirt".
OKAY!!
in under the line.
my submission is in.
I promise not to be a big baby this time around.
BUT UUUUHM....
aren't all those silhouettes of obviously copyrighted characters against the rules?
and if not, Shouldn't they be?

I think the point is to produce something that will appeal to the masses, represent HCRealms in a positive way, and will sell Tshirts. If no one can do better then why bother. If no one came up with a better "light bulb" then the one first invented I would still be buying them. Thats like saying the Lakers can't compete for the NBA championship again next year because they won it this year. So it won a few years ago, you want your shirt to win then make a better one. Besides I don't see where it says in the rules you can't resubmit your designs if you were a finalist and/or winner from the previous contest ;)
I still have my design from the last contest... I was a finalist... Should I resubmit that one as well as the new one I just submitted?
:)?

Yes submit it.
I don't think you can copyright a silhouette unless that is what the character is supposed to look like. You definitely cannot include the character's name or more definitive likeness I can assume.
But if you can clearly tell its Batman or Captain America, or Superman... Isn't that a bit unfair to everyone who went to the trouble to create original art instead of just altering existing art they downloaded off the internet of copyrighted materials in violations of the rules?
I specifically ask, since this issue came up during the last contest, and a collection of easily identifiable silhouettes as a design WON last time.
seemed in conflict with the rules, and the spirit of the rules then.
still does now.
I designed #3 from the last contest's finalists (The purple alien "lantern" concept, predating the rainbow corps' existence, all wearing 'clix rings...) Since You already have it... I officially resubmit it.
Like I said above, I don't plan on being a big baby about this. I raised quite a stink about it last time to no avail... But can you see my point where silhouettes are concerned?
Was the deadline before the 31 or the day of the 31? cause.. if its the later than here is my submission.. the uploaded quality is meh but the .jpg i sent should look okay.... note All silhouettes have been edited.. i hope they are edited enough :squareeye
Enjoy.

The deadline is currently tonight at midnight . I will decide then on an extension or not.
Thanks!
BTW, all those designs that bleed to the sleeve, to the bottom, wrap around the neck ... just won't translate at all to a mass produced shirt (without it costing like $30-$40. We're trying to keep shirts in the $14.95 to $19.95 (+S&H) range ... less if possible
I've got no design, but the tag line from the last shirt is just too good to let go.
" Darn right, I play with little plastic superheroes. "
I can't count how many happy, positive comments I've gotten in public about that line on my old shirt. Not just from comics people either.

Different strokes. That tagline killed the old shirt for me.

I was fond of it too. I wear mine all the time. It was getting worn out, which is why I recommended to Typhon that we have this little design contest to begin with!

Superhero silhouettes are fine because it's not the actual copyrighted icon. You think a silhouette looks like captain america, but it could easily be some generic guy with a round shield. That one looks like wolverine? Oh, he's actually holding 3 screw drivers in each hand. With a silhouette, you can't prove that a character that resembles a copyrighted image is really that image. Even if it's the same proportions and everything.
I'm sure we will see a fair share of silhouettes.
Back to the last topic. It is not that I am afraid I will lose to a better design. I say bring it on. But I could understand if people got mad after 3-4 years of contests where the same design keeps being re-entered and keeps winning. Spread the love a little bit.
Personally I think resubmitting (the winning) design from the year before is in bad taste. Sure it raises the bar for the new competition, but it almost puts the bar too high. Instead of just beating everyone who competes this year, we pretty much have to beat everyone who has competed in either contest now that the winner (who beat all the older contestants) is being resubmitted.
the point is this:
if you use a silhouette, its for one reason:
Because everyone here can identify in a second what copyrighted character it is. period. You're using the recognizable likeness of a copyrighted character.
If the likeness was not recognizable, what would be the point of using it? furthermore, everyone here can still identify the character even if it was altered!
Its a loophole. Its against the spirit of the competition.
I won't say any more on the subject, but this is my position.
Its easy. Its unfair to people who worked harder, and by the rules of the competition it shouldn't be allowed
I'm done commenting on this... forever!

Bad taste? This is a competition we aren't playing T-ball here and everyone doesn't get a turn at bat, they are looking for the absolute best HCRealms tshirt possible. If there are more people willing to buy the shirt that won the first time, or one of the other finalists shirts then why shouldn't that be the one that wins? This is a competition to see who can make the best shirt that will sell the most. If yours (or anyone elses) can't outsell a previous submission then it shouldn't win.
oh and for the record I don't have a submission in this or the previous contest, I am simply someone who wants the best shirt possible for the $20 I might have to spend.

Silhouettes are easy. Thank goodness for silhouettes because if people couldn't use them, most people couldn't come up with anything superhero-looking to put on the image. Not everyone has amazing drawing abilities and can draw something like the finalist last contest. Even though they are easy, I feel silhouettes can be creative and just as inspirational as full color drawings of superheroes.
Examples: Here (http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs31/f/2008/210/d/4/Superhero_Silhouette_by_Ura_Chan.png), here (http://blog.newsarama.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10087/Thor_Silhouette.jpeg), and here (http://www.superherostuff.com/characters/Spiderman/images/spiderman_silhouette_t_shirt_2.jpg).
Is it a loophole? That's debatable. Are silhouettes copyright infringement? Absolutely not.
Silhouettes may be as cheesy as dumping a bunch of filters onto a photo manipulation image, or using pre-made brushes for paint projects, but just like these, they can sometimes be used nicely to create a good looking image. And that is all that is important; the final product. It doesn't matter how it was created, but how it looks in the end. (edit: When I say it doesn't matter how it was created, I don't mean that it's fine to steal copyrighted images. I just meant that it doesn't matter if you used cheesy tactics or easy skills to make an image. If it looks great in the end, it looks great in the end.)
Silhouettes may be cheesy, but the people that are using them are using them for smart reasons (and maybe also for dumb reasons). Just like you said, the likenesses are recognizable and that (sometimes) instant recognition appeals to some people. Why do people create parodies of food products, or movies, or songs? Because of the bond people have made to the parodied item creates an automatic bond to the parody.
You have your opinion about the 'spirit' of the contest, but in my opinion I don't think silhouettes go against it.
oh and for the record I don't have a submission in this or the previous contest, I am simply someone who wants the best shirt possible for the $20 I might have to spend.
And I think you should have that option to choose the winner or even runner up from the last contest.
I just don't think the winner should be re-entered back into the contest. If it has won once, there is a high chance that it will win again.
I welcome your opinion and others that disagree with me.

I just don't see why if its still the best out of all the competition it shouldn't be able to win again. I want the best shirt, not the best shirt that didn't win and/or was entered before. If 100 people want that particular shirt and only 50 or so want the next best one, wouldn't it make more sense to go with the one more people want?

Hey, Typhon. Did the contest get extended? I only ask, because I might throw some submissions into the ring if they do.
No; they did not get extended. We ended up having a bunch of submissions these past few days (for a total of 70 designs), so I'm now going through and standardizing the sizes so is can be an apples-to-apples comparison. There were some really good ones in the mix ... so here's hope'n!
Just to keep everyone updated on the process. We have ~70 entries; some of which were immediately eliminated for inappropriate content and/or failure to meet the requirement. We have really solid entries; so the community definitely has some work to do!
Right now I am removing entries that just don't compare, don't represent the HCRealms brand well, or can't be converted to a shirt without driving the cost over $20/shirt. If the design has merit, I will make modifications at this point that will make it printable.
Instead of the initial "staff pick"; I am going to try and set up a multi-select poll and let the community pick as many designs as they want they they would purchase; and from there, the top X will become the finalists for the single-select poll.

I also have no idea who that rakanuj mod is.
He's not a moderator... he's a friend of mine who does programming for the site. :) I've checked the printing cost for this and it certainly isn't going to be cheap ... to there's a big cost issue with me paying for the overhead to print it .. then having to charge a price that the community can't handle. We will see; I'm going to try my hardest to keep prices in the $14.95 to $19.95 +S&H.
It is a nice design though.

That comic book cover, if it doesn't work out well as a shirt design, would be great as a front to a HCRealms flyer that is given away at conventions.
I started to draw something myself, but I am not a very good physical artist and it was taking me forever to draw the comic scene I was looking to draw. So I decided to focus on something I could design within the time restraints. (which I felt were fair)
I produced a character card for "HCRealms Member" with a special trait and named abilities but decided not to submit it in the end because I felt it'd be a better print'n'promote item than a shirt design.
Typhon, if you'd like me to send you an image of it, let me know.
edit: Again, good luck to all.
Typhon, if you'd like me to send you an image of it, let me know.
Yes; please do. There was actually a submission just like the one that you mentioned. There are different reason why certain designs were chosen, and some of them were not based on finished product, but on a concept that we can "tune" before taking it to print if the community loves it enough. If I had to pick a winner; I wouldn't be able to. I'd probably want to print 5 different shirts!!! LOL!

I thought I'd throw this out. These were my 3 rules that I let govern all my designs and how I chose which design to focus on.
The goals of a HCRealms t-shirt design (in my opinion) are:
1) To appeal to those who know nothing about HCRealms or even Heroclix
It's important to appeal to this group of people because you never know where you will be advertising the game. It could be at a gaming convention, where there could be other superhero games. It could be at a comic book convention, where there is an overabundance of superhero stuff. You need an image that can appeal in both settings to both demographics.
2) To appeal to those who play Heroclix and may or may not know of HCRealms
This is your main audience, your main consumer base. These are the people who will be buying your t-shirts, so it's important that your design appeals to them. Even if a person doesn't know about HCRealms, they may know of Heroclix and if they can recognize aspects of the game in the design, it will be easier for them to appreciate and be interested in it.
3) To educate those who know nothing of Heroclix a little bit about the game
That's the whole point of a t-shirt design, right? It's just an advertisement that a person wears. It's important that the design educates the random strangers you encounter on what the game is about. If a person can figure out a little bit about the game just by looking at the design, their interest in the game may go up. A random stranger who is totally confused about the game from looking at the design is just going to disregard it and focus on something else. It's impossible to tell everything about the game in one design, but a few little drops of information can go a far way in educating the mass amounts of people you will encounter at a convention or in your everyday life.
If a design can do a decent job at each of those goals, I feel it's a successful design.
The runner up design from last contest did a good job of appealing to non-heroclix players with a design that would be appealing from far away. It also showcased the miniature aspect of the game. Also, it had a dial base where the word HCRealms was written. The design could have incorporated a little more into it to appeal to the regular players and maybe a little more to educate what the game is about, but it at least touched upon each of my three aspects and blew the 1st one out of the water.
The winning design of the last contest touched upon each of the three categories, but had emphasis in different areas. There was a strong presence of the 2nd category, with the silhouettes of the figures. There was even a blurb about miniature superheroes, which explained a little about the game. One area where I felt it was slightly lacking was it's overall aesthetic value. It was decent looking, but from far away, would it be that appealing to a random nobody? I'm not sure.
For the character card idea, I was going to submit it, but it didn't meet all 3 categories at a level I was happy with. It definitely met the 2nd category, pretty much blowing it out of the park. heroclix players would be falling out of the chair laughing about how awesome it would be. It kind of met the 3rd category, where it showed that each character had an ability card and there were different abilities. But to the random stranger, it wouldn't really be that attractive. They may think it has to do with D&D or another game. There would be very little actual art or characters on it and more just a list of abilities and a bunch of words.
In the end, I chose a design I felt was short and sweet. It wasn't too complicated, and I think it incorporated each of my 3 categories pretty decently.
I'd love to hear the logic of how others came up with their design and their design ethics.
I did a little research.
This site:
CustomTshirts.com (http://instashirt.com/customtshirts/dtg-price-quote-full-color.html)
offers full color digital printing. If you look on the page the link leads to, you'll see that if you order the number you had quoted earlier (250) they would cost $3 each. Plenty cheap enough to sell them for $15-$20.
Somewhere else on their site, it says shipping is free.
This is just one company. Many companies online offer comparable deals.
Here is the one I sent in. Please give some feedback.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/350s10/2010_HCRealms_T-Shirt_Contest-1.jpg
I had a different approach to designing the shirt than Perplexinator.
I felt that the #1 function of the shirt is to be an ice breaker. I specifically left the .Com out of the header, because I wanted the wearer to get asked about the shirt. If someone saw the .com, they would automatically think "aha, its a website" and there would be no conversation.
I don't think of the T-shirt as an Advertisement for the site. The member wearing the shirt is an Ambassador for the site, and the shirt is what lets him do his job. When he wears it, people say "cool shirt, is that a comic?" (or whatever they would say in regard to a different design) and the member would say "No, its one of my Favorite websites. I hang out there all the time" Once the conversation has begun, its easy for the Member to give details. (It's a gaming site for this Superhero miniature game I play...etc, etc...)
First, it should be something the members want to wear. Something they want to buy. Second, it should invoke the site's branding. Using the Site's logo & font (Which is 'Badaboom' if you didn't know) is essential. And finally, it should say something about what we're all about here. I think that primarily, We're about comics, and a game based on comics, so that's what I focused on... But we're also about the people here, and so I tried as best I could to sneak what personality I could uncover from the Admin & Moderator's profiles into their representative characters. PS- some of you guys should put more info in your profiles ;) (You'll note Azs' eye, iBeatDrew's Grid Reality logo, and mapping powers, Quebbster is some kind of deputy, etc...and yes Phantalien, I thought you'd like to be a hulking Kirby monster... I tried my best to capture the personalities people would see around here, or at least reflect each Mod's favorite comics characters in their representations)
so yeah, my take on it is that it should be a nice shirt first, and a walking ad second.
to each his own I guess.
350s10:
love it!
but I'd lose the white box around the HCRealms logo and give it an outline.
I would definitely wear that shirt though!
I did a little research.
This site:

If that price is correct; that's a great deal! just about every place I've looked only did digital process on white; or charged something like $12/shirt to print eve in the ~250 range (not to mention charging for larger sizes starting with XL). Thanks for the tip though; I'll definitely look into it!
Edit:That place ended up being ~ $12/shirt, and only on white ... which is about average. If the design doesn't involve a digital process, then the price drops dramatically; and that's really the hope for everyone.
I could put an outline on it and you could print it on a white shirt if it is a big issue.
we can work around it, should it make it as the winner.
edit:
Oh. I was looking at the wrong column. It says $8... where's the additional $4... Oh.. right, you will pt the Powered by Realmworx thing on the back... still, I bet they could be made... plus, I can always make you a four color separation if Screen printing a 4c process shirt is cheaper. There's also Heat Transfer to consider as an option. I can retool the file as needed depending on your print method. There's an entire industry based on solutions to this problem.
If the design doesn't involve a digital process, then the price drops dramatically; and that's really the hope for everyone.
If a 4 color screen print is cheaper, like I said, I can create separations. I've worked as a production artist for a few screen printers. (3 throughout my career)
My approach would definitely be to show my love for the site in a design that I could wear out and about daily (not restricted to conventions or game stores). My wife is that "non-gamer" eye that makes sure I don't let my geek flag fly too high with my non-gamer friends. LOL!
at a site called "Tagless Threads" I just saw 5 color screen printing in the 250 shirt range priced at around $4 a shirt (I downloaded their pricelist if you want to see it), the small one color print on the opposite side would effect costs, but the process price on an image like that (even making it 5 color so you can print a white backdrop on a black shirt) makes the design totally doable.
sorry. Just gotta defend my entry
at a site called "Tagless Threads" I just saw 5 color screen printing in the 250 shirt range priced at around $4 a shirt (I downloaded their pricelist if you want to see it)
They look like they're running the same backend software as the previously mentioned site; and the sample quote I've been getting for 228 shirts ranging from S-4XL is still coming out to $12/shirt before S&H. Making a 1 color shirt isn't a big deal; I can find places that'll do it for $4-$5 no problem; it's the Digital Process on a black shirt that I'm using as a 'worst case'. :)
BTW; I've uploaded the Top 50% of the submitted designs. I did a first pass, rating them, and ranked them in order ... then just sliced it right down the middle.

Yes; that means out of the ~70 entries that were submitted; only the top 50% were selected to be highlighted on the site.
The process from here on out is that I'm going to create a multi-select (or star-rating) voting system that will allow for everyone to vote on the 35 entries that are currently being previewed. From there, we will select the finalists and then do the final vote for the winning shirt. :) I think there are a lot of good entries in the mix; so it's going to be a tough pick!

Wha? My join date is older than that. Join Date: 02/27/2002.
That's right, Feb 2002, 2 months before the date on your shirt. ;P
Boy I suck at math. I now realize that Feb is THREE months before May. duh.

I can sum your problem up in two words: you can't count.

Rep-able!
And I can't wait for the new shirts! There are some great "finalists" in the 35.

Ironic that this post comes back up...
I can't say what I know about it, but let's just say that the plans are moving forward now for the shirts.

Like a glacier.
Actually I think its a whole Mayan thing. In case the world does end in 2012, it would suck to get stuck with all these T-Shirts. Better wait until 2013, just in case...

seriously, though. Plans ARE moving forward on the shirts. They are being redesigned by a person that I know right now to resemble something that everybody will want to buy and then they will put up for sale. I wouldn't doubt it if it happened within the month.
if the voting is any indication "something that everyone will want to buy" shouldn't take that much effort.
People on this site have a shaky sense of aesthetics.
just make sure there's a real groaner of a corny joke on it and they'll sell like hot-cakes around here.

If I had to guess, I'd say he's hinting at a design that's supported by NECA, which we would all want to buy. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe my post will be deleted...
I have now seen the preliminary design. It is looking awesome. Made some suggestions to the designer, and he is taking them into consideration. I hope you will all be pleased.
The design has nothing to do with Neca support or approval, btw

I cast my vote for an orange shirt. An orange shirt gets my vote, no matter how much I think the slogan stinks.
ROFL, Yes! Orange 4 lyfe! I also agree with a much larger HCRealms logo on the shirt. I love Clix, but HCRealms, and the awesome community make it the "game of games." Madddddd rep! :knockedou
