View Full Version : How does one go about becoming a Mod?

I've noticed we've got a few new moderators around here. I used to think it had something to do with seniority, but then I noticed that the new recruits hadn't been on here as long as I have. Does it have something to do with activity in the HCRealms community? Do you just have to ask? Post Count? Rules familiarity whether it be Heroclix or Realms rules? Just curious. Not even sure I would WANT to be a mod, but I'm always looking for ways to be more invloved with Heroclix.

I think they're chosen randomly. Thats the only way to explain some of the selections ;)

Having thought about it for a little while, I want the power. I want to be mighty! How do I put my hat in the ring?

I would be the people's Mod! I wouldn't abuse my power or use it to make snarky and rude comments like some mods of the past. Seriously, some of the mods that have been on here were real jerks. It's time for a change.

Yes, we can!

The process normally starts at random ... Someone does something and gets themselves noticed, and a nomination pops into our private staff forum. At that point; the other moderators and admins chime in about how that person would/wouldn't be a good moderator ... and it goes from there.

This time around; there was a nomination; which sparked the discussion that we do in fact need more people to help facilitate the increased traffic, so some additional nominations were thrown into the hat.

I certainly wouldn't be opposed to a "People's Choice" type moderator, but that would that really mean? Someone who doesn't do their job and just tries to win a popularity contest? LOL! Being on staff is a thankless job. They're "Blood Donors" for a reason ... it's blood, sweat, and tears (and time) that they donate, not money.

Well, my day job is that of a Store Manager at a very large retail chain. I am fully capable of excellent customer service and decision making. I have been doing this for 13 years, so obviously I have a track record at this point of being capable of AT THE VERY LEAST being able to retain my job status. Anybody who has worked in a customer oriented environment can tell you that doing this for the length that I have is not easy. It requires patience and dilligence. On the Heroclix side of things, I have been an active member of this website for nearly eight years. In that time, I have done such things as participate in such charitable events as "Clix for a Cure" and "Heroclix for Haiti." Last Christmas, I organized a charitable drive for getting a brick/case of Hammer of Thor for someone who didn't have the means of getting them himself and was wildly sucessful. I have been a staff member for Critical Hit magazine since it's inception as the writer of the "Themes like a good idea" article. As a "Mod of the People" I would be able to bring those same skills that I have learned as a Manager and as an AVID heroclix player to be business minded yet fair. I would be humerous yet serious as the situation would require. I don't know where my "Career" as an HCRealms member has fallen on your radar screens, but I am on here nearly every day and am never on here for anything less than an hour. In my eight years and 6,000+ posts I have gone ALMOST totally without getting into and/or starting any fights. I say almost because some things on the internet do tend to get taken out of context at times and can be blown out of proportion. I am not expecting to be knighted on the spot, but I would at least like to have you look back at this next time for your consideration when the round table gets together to open up another seat. Thank you.

P.S. My days of pandering for rep are officially over. You will never see it again. The entire above post is sincere and serious.

Emp will correct me if I'm wrong, but it's always been my understanding that Bavarian is the goofiest of German accents. Of course, I've been prone to say that Bavaria is German for "Texas," so one can take generalizations about one and apply them to the other pretty readily.

Well, it's Germany's largest state, so they've got the whole ego thing that goes along with that. Historically, Bavaria also maintained a degree of independence greater than the other constituent German states. Perhaps most notably, from a cultural standpoint, Bavaria cleaves a bit closer to Austria than it does to Germany. As Austria's role in 20th century history is to serve as "the place where Germany's bad ideas come from," this makes Germany-watchers raise a questioning eyebrow at the Bavarians.

I was here about a year and a half year before I was asked to be a mod. I think a bit of it has to do with respect and being a leader and honestly trying to help out, not asking for anything is return. Trust me, things like that stand out a great deal. You don't ask to be a mod. Honestly, if you want to be a mod, then you're probably not going to be in it for the right reasons.

As for HeroClix knowledge, psssshhh. HCRealms is about much more than HeroClix. It may have started off that way, but it evolved and turned into something greater.

Personally, I know jack about what's going on in Clix anymore and barely play. That doesn't affect my judgement as to when to warn someone for breaking the rules.

The problem with that list is not all of said Mods are active. Hence the need to bolster our numbers.

I can't remember the last time that I've seen Frontman, DS or SuperFro around.

We're all different people with different pesonalities, so you'll see us hanging around in different places. I'm into the Clix scene much anymore, but I'll respond to reported posts when needed. You can usually find me in the Mafia forum or Another Realm. Sometimes the Entertainment section.

Pretty good guess, and Bavarian holds a solid second space on the list of ridiculous German accents, but the most horrible actually is the Eastern dialect, most commonly found in Saxony.

As for Bavaria leaning closer to Austria, that's a bit backwards. As recently as the 12th century (so basically yesterday in European terms) Austria was still part of Bavaria. Either way, they're suspicious with their mountains and Lederhosen and Hefeweizen.

Oh; I almost forgot ... leading a social group or being a single-forum moderator (Mafia) or a great stepping stone to being an 'Area Moderator' (in charge of HeroClix). We alsohave global Moderators which run the entire site ... then there's the Administrators (and when we have an active Administrator ... I normally move into the 'Owner' group to avoid confusion). :)

Nominations, site mergers, and dealing with children? It's my real life gone virtual. I get on here to escape all the political, work, and family issues. Now here?

Honestly we could probably use a few more mods and anyone nominated as one should be honored.

Of course the multitude of subsequent bashing threads about you would just be gravy.

I know one thing we need more than moderators ... programmers. :) Of course we're not set up with source control since it's normally only andrew or myself coding (mainly me now); but that's some assistance I'd gladly take.

What language are we talking? Outside of ABAP for SAP stuff, it's all greek. But as most programming goes, it's mostly cut and paste and a little tweaking for something as static as this site.

While mod activity in an areas is largely going to be based on what we ourselves enjoy reading, if you see issues in Dreams and Desires that you think needs attention feel free to report the post and someone will definitely get over there to take a look.

but how is that exactly? Do you all seat in a dark place around a table and rise cups? (btw, thanks for create this fantastic Kingdom, now, were do you hide the Princesssssss????)

Jack Chick is such a liar! I got into D&D because of that pamphlet, and I've never found the book with the real spells in it! I'm beginning to think this stuff isn't Satanic at all! It didn't even offend my parents! I can't even make player's commit suicide by killing their characters, they're all like, "Cool, now I can try that new Wizard build I've been planning!"

Well, at least it scares the door-to-door Bible-thumpers away. That's something, right? : - )

d_knight7
07/29/2010, 02:48
The real killer (pun intended) is that it's about someone offing themselves because their D&D character died?

HELLO! Death in D&D is like rolling on the mild irritant table for most other RPG's.

"What seems to be the matter Moonleaf?"

"I think I'm coming down with a touch of Death, Dr. Cleric."

"Well it's Spring, there's a lot of it going around. Take 2 potions and don't swim for at least 24 hours."

Chick Tracts Call of Cthulhu, now you're talking!
