View Full Version : Who should I digitally sculpt?

I'm an amateur 3D artist and I just finished a project, so now I want to do something Heroclix related. I want to sculpt a comic character, but I can't put my finger on who I want to make, so I'm going to let you guys choose for me. So who do you want a sculpt of? I'd prefer someone Marvel, since I know most of the characters better.
Edit: I'm doing Holocaust. Here's a couple of very early shots. If I keep working at this pace, maybe I'll finish him in one day.

Edit2: Okay, mow I have some basic muscles sculpted and I'm putting on armor, including his stupid 90's gun arm.

Edit3: Need to pose and do some touching up and transparency, but it's almost done.

Edit 4: Finished! I think it looks pretty good. Maybe not as nice as it should due to transparency issues causing me to work between programs, but I still like him. I thought about making some fire around the feet, but accessories on the base are getting too common in clix today. I just wanted this guy to look big, simple, and imposing.

How about an Avengers era Beast, new Secret Avengers or old Avengers. Not the most extravagant but still could be challenging.

Believe it or not, I've kind of already done him (He's my favorite character). I was still new to modeling and it was more an animation rig than an actual digital sculpt, but here he is.

What I'm going to do is going to look way nicer than that though. That one wasn't really intended for looks.

Manthing !.
The perfect choice for digital sculpting would be 3-D Man. Of course, most people won't know who he is.

You should do a Venom/Spider-man duo figure. Just cause I want to see it made.

If you haven't already decided, you should consider Noir Spider-Man. It would be cool to see him.

Holocaust is the only one who got more than one request, so I'll work on him today. I never, ever would have thought of him, but he does seem really fun to sculpt. I'll also post progress pictures to show how it's done.

I also vote for Irredeemable Ant-Man!
I second Nova Prime.
I'd like to see what you can do with a normal build.
Monsters and big hulking guys can be a bit easy compared to something that has the proportions of a real person!

Rep to you! :)
looking very nice.
keep up the good work, maybe you've got a future there.
next show us someone with a normal human build... and if you want it to be extra hard.. make it a girl!

I should mention that this Holocaust sculpt is actually built out of a Professor X that I made. Pretty ironic that the big armored monster is just weak little Xavier on the inside.
After I finish Holocaust (which should be this afternoon) I kinda want to do Irredeemable Antman because he's one of my favorites and he should have been made by now.

I use both zbrush and Maya. I should probably just use zbrush, but I'm more comfortable with low detail sculpting and posing in Maya. Also, zBrush (At least my version) can't do transparency conveniently, so I'm probably going to render the final result in Maya (I need transparency for the helmet)

Argh! You make it too easy!

this my sound stupid but
whstd the point of making a digital sculpt? is it used to as a reference to help make a real sculpt from like sort of a schematic? or what lol

There is a proccess where they are 'printed'. See Ben's awesome stuff as examples of this being put into practice. Someone else can link you to the videos of it being done.
But I think DBA is using it to hone his skills.
Its not impossible to get access to a 3D printer. Someone has one and will charge to use it. If he wants to... he could get a master printed, then make a mold so that he could make a few of them, or just keep the original.
but yeah, I think its mostly for him to get some practice.

Done with Holocaust. It's not perfect, but I'm pleased. We're talking about a 2 inch tall figure, so I see no need to go into more detail.

The detail level of Heroclix sculpts is probably tricky business. I've seen some of the masters that looked amazing, only to have lackluster figures because the details dropped in mass production.
I think a slightly exaggerated and cartoonish approach is the best way to have the details come through. Just look at the Colossus figure; he's exaggerated to almost comical proportions and definition, but looks GREAT in person.

I'm not sure what Colossus you mean, but it's a fine line with details for me. I think the shape of the armor and the clear helmet would be more than enough to come off decently as a mini (Worked for Living Laser). Besides, Holocaust is impossibly to not make in comical proportions anyway. Look at those arms

Well I think you did a darn good job... At first I thought he should be a little more dynamic, but then I realized he is just gloating over decimating some flatscans...
