Hey everyone!
Macquariecon is on again this year- DECEMBER 10th -12th.
There will be a clix tournament, most likely using the same format as last year.
Sent an email to Wizkids this morning about it and pending their approval, it'll be the 2010 national championships (heck we held nationals at MacCon last year- its almost tradition).
the clix will be on the sunday (like last year) but think about playing some of the fine roleplaying games they'll be offering throughout the weekend.
More information closer to the date.
just giving people advance warning to mark the date (and maybe give interstaters a chance to prep and come down for it)

Macquarie University is near Epping and Ryde in northern Sydney.

For the benefit of those that didn't go last year...
What does 'same format as last year' mean? :noid:

Ugh.....so MacquarieCon is mostly RPG focused?
Man, if the convention as a whole was something I'm interested in (like comics, boardgaming, etc) I'd be tempted to make the trek up to Sydney for it. Especially as briscoe would likely come as well. But I'm not a fan of RPGs.

Here's a repost:
The Championships will be split into two parts:
HeroClix Preliminary - 300 point Draft
Draft your team from a random selection of characters made available by the tournament judge. These characters come from a range of new and older sets.
After team construction the Preliminary will run over two 60-minute games. An award will be presented to the player with the best win/loss and victory point total, and players may keep any figures they choose in the draft. New and returning players are welcome to join in!
...followed by:
HeroClix Championship - 300 points Constructed
Bring your best pre-constructed team to compete for the title of 2009 Australian National Champion! Once the Prelimary rounds are complete, all players who wish to participate in the Championship plays three 90-minute games. If you don't bring your own team, you may use the team you built in the Preliminary rounds.
The Australian National Champion award will be presented to the player with the best win/loss record and victory point total (including both Preliminary and Championship rounds); additional awards will be presented for Fellowship and Best Comic Team.
Ugh.....so MacquarieCon is mostly RPG focused?Pretty much. It's a small university-sponsored RPG weekend. The organisers are happy to have non-RPG gaming events (and boardgames is not a bad idea... maybe I'll run a bunch of Battlestar Galactica...) but the whole weekend is pretty modest.

I don't know of any big, professional-style conventions that run HeroClix. I wouldn't be opposed to playing some Clix at Supernova in the future, but somebody has to step forward to run it. Without financial backing from WK/NECA or the local distributor, that seems less likely.

Seems to me that having the 'nationals' at MaquarieCon ain't that much different from when it was at Armageddeon a couple of years back. At least it's a big convention with a range of stuff at it. Only downside to that being that there's not as many players in Melbourne as there are in Sydney.

Wizkids no longer officially supports tournaments they aren't at. (this is a fairly reasonable position to take).
Last year we called Nationals at MacCon because clix only revived in november, and we were the only large tournament left in the year- better to have a nationals then none at all we felt. (not that I would have minded staying national champ mind you).
this year we held off calling it, to see if a larger tournament would turn up (say gencon?).
As is, it looks like MacCon is going to be the biggest Clix tournament of the year (again).
Which makes it the best place to call nationals.
(well eyecon at easter might have been bigger, but it seemed too soon after last years nationals).
We could have stopped calling a Nationals when wizkids stopped supporting it (with the big crash), but it seems better to keep going anyway.
we had interstate players last year and I'd love to see people from out of town rock up again.
If there really is a strong opposition to us calling Nationals I can stop, but I can't imagine a there'll be a more fitting tournament anywhere else in Aus this year.

Mmm....I can understand it, I just wish it was at a con that I actually wouldn't mind going to otherwise, so it would be worth the effort to travel interstate. I have zero interest in RPGing unfortunately.
Doesn't Sydney have a decent comics convention during the year? I remember going to it years ago when I lived in Newcastle.

There's Supernova, of course.
I think I would be interested in going again this year. I had a great time last year and it would be good to catch up with more clix players. I will see how it plays out and what is going on in my life around that time.
I enjoyed last years format.

Would it be possible to have the nationals next year at Supernova, now that Gencon is dead?

Would it be possible to have the natiuonals next year at Supernova, now that Gencon is dead?
Or even on at the same time but somewhere else. Like for instance a game store (Games Paradise or Good Games) or a gaming club (like Sutek at the Uni). That way people could come up for the game and go to Supanova on the day it wasn't on. Supanova is so expensive I usually only go one day anyway. It could be perfect. If you pay for entry to Supernova($50) and then spent your whole time playing clix it would be a waste.
The Maquarie con guys dont care about our prenence anyway - they don't not care either, I just think if we were not there it wouldn't phase them. Or we could just have a regular clix tournament at Maquarie and the Nationals at Supanova?

The problem was really one of timing- by the time we knew Gencon wasn't on, supernova had already been and gone.
Im looking in to Supernova for next year though.

Next year nationals at supernova would be great, if it is possible. If you need any help Mr_Nobody just ask.... not that I have any connections or anything.

Why do people want the nationals moved to Supernova?
I have little interest in Supernova, and if I had to pay $50 to get in there to play, then I'm afraid that I'd just skip nationals. Considering how many players we have that dislike the costs involved in playing sealed games, I think my reaction may end up being a common one.
Cheers,

I doesn't have to be at Supernova, (like MODOC said) It could just be on the same weekend.

I want to preface this comment by pointing out that I'm not putting the idea down, or trying to have a go at anyone.
Why do people want it moved?
(I don't care when it is really, I'm just wondering)
I could see a benefit for me having it on the same weekend as Supernova. If I am coming from interstate it is certainly more inviting to have more to do.

Case in point. We would love a national tourney to actually be national. If it is on during the same weekend as supernova, more interstate people are likely to turn up (much like gencon).

Yet again Grimes takes the 'Cheers' for MY IDEA !
CURSE YOU GRIMES, my archnemesis.
Serriously though this is why I suggested it, I think everyone would like the Nationals to be National. And if having the event on at the same time as something else, like Supanova, will tempt some to come that otherwise wouldn't then bring it on.
But paying $50 to play clix and to miss seeing what you actually paid the $50 for, is just crazy talk.

Oh no, I was not implying that you took the credit, on the contary you quite clearly referenced me in an earlier post. I had no problem with you on that score.
What you recieved my CURSES for, archnemesis, was getting the 'cheers'.

Mr_Nobody
12/15/2010, 02:18
Apologies.
been busy at work.
Coming in First was Dion (I have no idea what his realms ID is if any)
He used
Pluto, Sage(E), Magdelena(E), Jason Blood and Diana Prince
in the draft, and
two Brightest Day Hawkgirls, Blackfire (E)(wi Vendetta), Blackfire (R), Johnny Alpha (R), Meteorite, Tombstone, Kinetic Accelerator
in the constructed.
Coming in Second Was Modoc
who used
girl Loki, Talia and Daredevil (wi Vault)
in the draft, and
HoT Cap (warbound, ICWO), Nightcrawler (warbound, ICWO), Oracle (on card), Psylocke, Scarlet Witch, Easy Company Medic, Shield Disruptor, Indigo Lantern, SIF
in the constructed.
Rounding out the top three was Sgt Grimes
who used
Amanda Waller, Gravity and Balder
in the Draft and
Emerald Emperess (NovaBlast, NotSoSpecial, some feat starting with E?), Dream Girl, Kid Zoom, Johnny Alpha (IT?), Laser Turret, Elehaal Vine, Step Ladder
in the Constructed.
Expect a Poll in the near future about when/where next years nationals should be- If we get things thought through early we can have more options for events to be at.
