View Full Version : best 400 pt team using BN starter?
so i am a returning player and am thinking of finally going out to a tournament this weekend
i don't have any of the modern age pieces yet
i was either just going to buy a bunch of boosters when i got there and build a team out of whatever i pulled or just buy the blackest night starter since it has some nice pieces
what is the best team to build from the BN starter for a 400 point floor?
i was thinking Flash, Green Lantern & Atom, but then i'd have another 40, so maybe i could ask to borrow a cheap piece or even buy another booster or two in hopes of pulling a cheap piece
or else i could do Atom, Mera, Scarecrow & Green Lantern which comes to 385
i'm not really looking to win or anything, seeing as how this is my first time back after a while, but i would like be as competitive as possible of course! :)
i might also buy the fantastic four starter
I haven't had a chance to play with the fantastic four stuff, just getting back into the game as well :). but I own the Blackest Night starter and if it were me, id buy the fantastic four figures. I feel that the BN figures don't play well without some support, but thats just my experience, i feel like the fantastic four might have more balance and synergy and I'm thinking the theme team bonus might be worth it itself. just my two cents, granted I'm just getting back in too, but thought id try to help! Good luck!
p.s. if you do go with the BN starter definitely use Scarecrow. And of course Wonder woman is a beast.
good point about the FF... what does the theme bonus do again?

Theme Team bonus-
If all your figs have a common keyword and you have at least 1 fig for every 150 pts (1 for every 100 on generic keywords) you get +3 to the map roll, you can cancel a Battle Field Condition, and you get Probability Control (as a non-free action) for every 2 characters on your team.
Themed teams are forces of HeroClix characters in which all characters (excluding bystander tokens) share at least one common keyword among the keywords listed on their character cards. (Keywords are not case sensitive.)
If the shared keyword is a generic keyword (which are listed in the sidebar on the next page), your force must include at least one character for each 100 points (or fraction thereof) of the game’s build total to be considered a themed team. If the shared keyword is not a generic keyword, your force must include at least one character for each 150 points (or fraction thereof) of the game’s build total to be considered a themed team.
Themed teams receive the following benefits:
• A bonus to the roll to determine who will be the first player equal to the number of characters (excluding bystander tokens) on the force.
• The player of a themed team can choose one target battlefield condition to be canceled including his or her own (this choice is made when battlefield conditions are revealed); this benefit is optional.
• Any character on a themed team (including bystander tokens) can use Probability Control. The character using Probability Control in this way must not have already taken an action this turn and must be given an action token. This ability can be used once for every two characters on the team with the shared keyword.
Get the FF Starter. The Thing and Mr Fantastic are phenomenal pieces. Doom and Susan also don't slack. Even 100 point increments also means no wasted points :)
BN Starter is pretty good.. but weird points, underpowered teams, and poor synergy i've found. I'd go with FF and not look back!.

FFFTW! And if you decide to pick up the Classic boosters. Consider the 50 point spiderman and She Thing from Secret Invasion to add more figs to the group.

Doom, Ben and Reed could be pretty sick.
Best I can come up with for BN is your Atom/Mera/Scarecrow/Lantern idea.
You could pick up the Doom/Reed/Sue battle pack at the toy store for...what? $7? $8? I know a place that sells them for $5. 400 point team right there.
thanks guys... i'll probably go with the F4 set if they have it (but i'll likely buy the BN starter as well just to have the pieces)

If you are set on a 400 pt BN starter team, I would recommend:
Wonder Woman, Mera/Scarecrow, The Atom. It is hard building a 400 pt team with these figs because their point values either put you significantly under, or slightly lacking as far as figs.
ok so i just got back
they didn't have the fantastic four starter so i had to play the BN starter
i used The Atom, The Flash, Green Lantern and one guy let me borrow his The Holiday Killer for the tourney
i got killed my first game against a guy who had Black Hand, Kal-El & AE Diana Prince/Wonder Woman... i lost all my guys and got 0 points
second game i won though.. beat a guy who had Metallo, Per Degaton & Kryptonite Man... i lost only on Holiday Killer and took out his whole team
also i bought some boosters after the games were over... they only had Justice League, Arkham Asylum, Secret Invasion & Brave and the Bold, so i bought one of each
out of Justice League i pulled:
Chronos, Hector Hammond, Dr. Light, Icicle & Firehawk/Wonder Woman (i got a Firehawk base but a Wonder Woman card & figure...), Legionnaires
Secret Invasion:
Lightspeed, Gee, Captain America, Atlantean Warrior, Malice, Alias
Arkham Asylum:
Circe, Anarky, White Martian, Two-Face, Scandal Savage, Scatter!
Brave and the Bold:
Power Girl, Mademoiselle Marie, Damian Wayne, League Assassin, Parademon Grunt
also while i was there some guy gave me his Secret Invasion Iron Man which he had a duplicate of which was really cool
so maybe you guys can help me put a team together for next week which is another 400 point team... i think they said they don't allow feats though so keep that in mind

Here's a possible team using your figs (non-theme):
BN Green Lantern 150
BN The Atom 65
BatB Mademoiselle Marie 73
BatB League Assassin 22
SI Gee 40
SI Captain America 49
=399
Green Lantern is your big gun, while Marie helps as a secondary ranged attacker (don't forget to use her to KO a little guy; it gets her that awesome automatic hit counter). Cap is tie-up/up-close, while the League Assassin can also tie-up or block lines of fire. Gee is your TK machine, and for 40 points he's really good at it. The Atom is great at keeping your squad healthy.

i might also buy the fantastic four starter
Wonderwoman w/ Protected 223
Gotham City Detective 27
Lightspeed 25
M-11 59
Atom 65
=399
BN Flash w/ Armor Piercing 150
LOS Cosmic Boy 70
Lightspeed 25
BATB Talia 86
BN Atom 65
=396
Or if you just want a pure BN team:
BN Wonder Woman w/ Fortitude & AP 248
BN Mera 85
BN Atom 65
=398
BN Flash w/Armor Pirecing 150
BN Scarecrow 85
BN Mera 85
BN Atom 65
Red Lantern 5
Indigo Lantern 5
=395
i don't think i want to use GL & the Atom again... though i did like them, i JUST used them, and would like to try out some other pieces next
i am thinking of using Iron Man actually... he looks like he could be a lot of fun to play... i was thinking him, Capt America & Scarecrow which would get me to 322 leaving me with 78 points... so i was thinking between either Anarky, Mademoiselle Marie, Icicle or a combination of Gee/Lightspeed to give my team some better movement
i was also thinking of doing a Mind Control team with Circe & Hector Hammond then build around those 2
oh and to the guy above me i don't have any of those feats... i don't have some of those pieces either, read above i named all the pieces that i now have, thanks for your input though!
man i'm pretty ticked off about getting that Firehawk base with my Wonder Woman figure/card... especially considering she is a SR!!! i guess there is nothing i can do about this huh?

i recommend the ff starter because of doom, also if your gonna buy boosters buy web of spider-man busters as its the newest, secret invasion is also good
WoS isn't out yet... but yeah i'll buy some when it does come out, maybe even a brick
i'll probably get more of SI & BB as well... maybe even AA, but JL has left a bad taste in my mouth so i'm not sure about that one
seems CR, HoT, MU & AV are soldout though right?
and yeah i want the F4 starter but they didn't have it... it's being re-released though so i will buy it then
also the store i went to had the Thor's Might Chariot for sale, might get that

Yeah, pretty much nothing you can do about the Firehawk/Wonder Woman thing...I doubt if NECA is gonna be willing or even able to fix the old company's screw-ups.
They have the classic battle packs at ToysRUs here...check and see if the toy stores in your area might have some. They're a quick way to add some good stuff to your collection.
SI Iron Man is a great figure to build a team around. If you use SI Cap, don't be afraid to push him.
Using Gee for TK is a great idea. I very recently underestimated the power of TK and got my head beat in as a result.
That's all I got for right now.
i'm deciding between Anarky & Gee/Lightspeed then
which is better to have? a guy who use outwit while hiding in stealth (can also use a version of PC if i need it) or a two support pieces that don't really do much on their own but add extra mobility?
rowdyoctopus
08/15/2010, 23:28
Stealth outwit is clutch, and I would choose that but I am not that experienced and probably wouldn't play the mobility pieces very well anyway.
yeah i am thinking the same thing... can never go wrong with outwit! :) and i'd probably not play those two very well either...
chrisghast
08/16/2010, 12:11
go for the stealth outwit especilly if your a newer player.
yeah that's what i am thinking... might be a good idea to have two Outwit guys... am also considering Mademoiselle Marie to add more range offense though
PsychoHippie
08/16/2010, 17:07
Agreed. Go for the Stealthy Outwit.
chrisghast
08/16/2010, 18:55
just remember to always use the outwit, when i was a new player i would forget to use abilities like outwit or preplex, wasn't to smart back then.
rowdyoctopus
08/16/2010, 19:01
Yeah, the judge at my venue encourages new players to use things like outwit every single turn, even if it won't help them (for instance, if everyone is pushed) until they get into the habit of thinking about it and remembering to use it.

Anarky is def a good piece, but the ability to tk SI Iron Man is really big, that justs extends your reach with him and a good chance to catch your opponent off guard.
