View Full Version : Rep suggestions for the realm

I was thinking today how people can have been on HC realms forever and still have low rep. Some people don't realize how rep should be handled and dealt. Maybe a stickied thread to instruct people on this would be nice. To deal with this another way or in addition to I was thinking about maybe a way to get rep from forums themselves. Maybe you get automatic rep for posting a thread that gets over 500 looks something like that? Maybe get rep for each year you are a member and after say 5 years get a bonus. Just a thought tell me what you think.
Automatic Rep of any sort strikes me as running contrary to the concept of Rep, though that may simply be how it's striking me.
I agree that newcomers don't appear to have a very easy and direct way of learning about it short of asking or getting into a thread search -- the latter being one of those things that even many seasoned members often don't bother with.
Call me a noob or somthing .. but is rep really even that important ? does a low rep make a post mean less ?

No, it's really not and no, obviously it doesn't. But you knew that. ;)
If you don't have rep, you don't matter.
I know that's not what you want to hear, but it's true.
Personally, I think those without 500,000 rep should be banned, and no one new should be allowed to post.

Personally, I think people take rep way too seriously. I hand out rep left and right all the time. Even in my signature I indicate that I'm always going to try to rep people back when they rep me. It's just a silly feature on this website meant for fun. People start making the mistake of thinking that one person's level of rep is an indication of their ability to play the game when it really has nothing to do with that at all. People can have very little rep at all and be some of the best players around.

Any rules such as that make Rep mean more than it does. Besides, it would just make the rich richer and the poor a little less poor. If a guy has been around a short or long time should have no bearing; their reward is in having the benefits of the Realms for that long and hopefully becoming a known member. Rep doesn't change how people treat you; I recognize a guy because his username has popped up time after time in topics I read, and he's said things I found worthwhile.

My "you knew that" was referring to your second statement, so we're on the same page there.
Rep's mainly there to pat someone on the back for something they've added to the forums and/or to agree with something they've posted. Once upon a time there was Negative Rep, too, which the Mods wisely eliminated as it led nowhere good.
Edit: We also used to be able to see farther back into our own Rep history and to look at the Rep comments left on other members. That changed (as best I can recall) following the Great Collapse, when the site went off the rails around the time we found out that the first Wizkids was soon to be no more. I guess limiting our view to the most recently-received Rep was more of a server/space issue than anything else, but I don't know what was specifically behind not allowing us to see other members' Rep comments. It was probably a wise move anyway as I'm sure a significant number of the Rep comments some members receive are pats on the back for some shot they took at someone else.

There had been a time when the rep went mostly unspoken. Aside from mentioning it needed spread around in order to give it to someone. Then "someone" started a rep me so I can win this bet thread and the flood gates seemed open. I wish it was back to something people didn't talk about.

To add to that, people under 500,000 rep should have their first born forfeit to slave trade in Southeast Asia.
Honestly, I've noticed way too many times when some people start taking rep too seriously, they also happen to be the people who take this game too seriously. I plan on competing at GenCon next year, and I still don't take the game (or rep) too seriously.
I still like getting rep. It makes me feel like I have friends online since I don't have friends in real life. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJq-CWZf8as)

Required Rep is stupid. Do you really need the ego boost? We don't need a thread dictating how you use rep. If someone wants to give rep and doesn't know how they can easily find out.
And the dumbest of the dumb is "I'll rep you back if you rep me" conspiracy. Come on, rep *should* be used as a way to acknowledge something you greatly agree with or found extremely funny or something like that. To then rep the guy/gal back because they repped you defeats the whole purpose and just makes it a "buy perceived popularity" tool. IMO.

It might be a silly feature, but on a couple of other sites that I visit, I am constantly looking for the "rep" button to reward a good/informative/inciteful/funny reply.

Rep should be for whatever the hell you want to use it for. Heck, sometimes I give out rep randomly just because I want to do so. Rep isn't that important. If I start a thread, sometimes I just rep people for commenting in that thread.
Putting stipulations on how or why someone should rep someone else is just about as lame as FDR's legs... or recycling old jokes. :p
I also put a comment in my signature more as a nod to "the Golden Rule." I always want to treat others well if they treat me well. For those who want more rep, I'm always willing to help them out with a little rep.

No, low rep doesn't make a post mean less. Having a horrible podcast, however, does. ;)
Rep is already directly tied into post count; and I'm not too interested in creating more ways for people to go after boosting an arbitrary number (those 'last post wins' games that just boost post count already piss me off enough).
I do have something I've been testing out for about 2 years now related to people that have very active threads though; I just need to figure out a way to deploy it.
Typhon, per the rules laid out in this thread, you don't have enough rep to post.

;)Fortunately for Typhon, he could always set his rep arbitrarily high. How's one trillion sound to you? When you can muck around behind the scenes, you don't have to get rep the hard way. :p Alternatively, he could drop your rep down to about forty-three, which would make your post above invalid. ;)
(From my quick look around, it seems like any mod could "set" their rep to an arbitrary value. I don't see the fun in that, though. Right now I'm kinda enjoying watching Malakim2099 and I swap places back and forth on the ladder!)

It could be interesting to see some kind of "Like" button for specific posts, but I don't have any problem with the way that rep works now*. Occasionally folks go nuts with rep farming posts, but provided that they don't go for too long that's no big deal.

Not what I was suggesting, at all.
An Awesome Posts forum would be where posts are reported, and given their own thread for rating and comments. People that are reporting too many posts that get poor ratings, have the feature removed.
I've seen it done on one other forum, and it works really well. A hilarious, emotionally moving, highly informative, or just plain awesome post, gets a much better showcasing than it would if it was just in a nothing thread.

Yes, if you post has not been repped, your opinion means nothing! :devious:
In All honesty, I read a lot of threads, but hardly give out rep. This does not mean i do not agree w/ a lot of people. it just means that whoever's thread i read and laughed at or clicked with or custom paint job i like will get a rep. I cannot rep everyone on here even though i would like too, it would take to much time...

You know what I'd do?
(Note: What Jack Would Do is neither feasible nor a suggestion. It is a Pipe Dream)
I'd change the name from Rep to Power Points or something. Then I'd have a list of attributes you could "buy" with Power Points. Super hero stuff like flight, super strength, eye beams, etc. The GOOD stuff getting progressively more expensive. They'd show up on your posts, and rather than a number, progress in the forums would be tracked by how "powerful" people are.
Would it be abused? Oh, yeah. People mine rep now, wait until you can do stuff with it. Would it be way harder to implement than it would be worth, if it was even possible? Yeah. I'm not saying it's a FEASIBLE idea; just what I would do.
You may have noticed that this effectively turns HCRealms into a giant pseudo-RPG. I can assure you, this is not accidental.

Seriously, though. Rep, when used constructively, is a good way to give positive reinforcement for a thoughtful, witty, or just plain good post. The user who receives the rep points feels good about themselves and will make an effort to post more often in that fashion, enhancing the general environment of the Realms. That's what rep is for: building a better community.

Rep is only one way to get an idea of who someone is or who you are on these forums.
Join date is the same thing.
Post count is the same thing.
Number of Friends is the same thing.
Number of Blog posts is the same thing.
You may carefully collate these numbers into a perfect example of who you, or someone else is, and be totally wrong.
END SERIOUS CONTENT: WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED HAVEN; ALREADY IN PROGRESS
I enjoy getting REP, though. Often, lurkers don't bother posting, but REP me anyway. I think that sucks because they deserve REP for lurking and REPping while not adding their obnoxious and usually unwanted opinion to the matter like some people on these forums (ME!) and I can't find a way to REP them back.
Oddly, I tried and failed to give REP to several people in this thread. So, maybe REP is a perfect indicator of who is cool around here and who is not.
(REP should never be given to those who double post)
REP:
Can you feel it ,see it, hear it today?
If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway
You will never understand it 'cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it's like walking on glass
It's so cool, it's so hip, it's alright
It's so groovy, it's outta sight
You can touch it, smell it, taste it so sweet
But it makes no difference 'cause it knocks you off your feet
It's cryin', bleedin', lying on the floor
So you lay down on it and you do it some more
You've got to share it, so you dare it
Then you bare it and you tear it
It's alive, afraid, a lie, a sin
It's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win
It's dark, it's moist, it's a bitter pain
It's sad it happened and it's a shame
You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
What is it?
It's it
What is it?...

Is more than meets the eye less than 86 (actually...i know, i'm a dork) minutes long...cause you know...show opener...lol.
More than meets the eye is not GOSPEL, though.
It' LOADED with in consistencies.
One simple example off the top of my head: Autobots can't fly! Unless they want to.

I've seen that. heh. I actually think that's all cartoon network trying to put a lid on it because it's called "the asskicking girls" or something. from what i know he kind of got cheesed out of a lot of royalties because he didn't retain the rights to any of the characters. but yeah, i'll let him know that you hate his guts.

If he can get me a copy of that on DVD, he'd be one of my favorite people of all time.
Actually, he already is. I've been trying to make PPG Clix for YEARS!
PPG was one of the few things that me and little girls could bond over during the years when I taught Kindergarten. I thank Mr. McKracken!
Okay, good...nobody took this one. My favorite (as anyone will tell you)...

There had been a time when the rep went mostly unspoken. Aside from mentioning it needed spread around in order to give it to someone. Then "someone" started a rep me so I can win this bet thread and the flood gates seemed open. I wish it was back to something people didn't talk about.
Yeah, rep threads are popping up every week on here anymore. I'm getting kinda sick of seeing them. Way I see it, rep don't count for nothing except for giving yourself an elitist feeling around here. And personally, I could give two poops wether someone on here finds what I have to say rep worthy or not. I'm going to say what I'm going to say, like it or not. Wait a sec, I'm starting to sound like VGA now...

I think that is a good idea, and also for getting a certain amount of posts and iTrader rating as well.

IIRC, I actually think you DO get a certain amount of rep for every year you're active and every 1000 posts or so...by today's standards it's a teeny amount, though.

Another "Script" site has it as:
Picture you got, not fool you not.
IMSDB (a "script" site directly related to IMDB) has is as:
Picture you got. Now fool you not!
And the previous line as: Friends find. Look behind. Many Face lie. You fool! You buy!
So, I don't know if I believe ANY of these guys.
he says "I'm worthless. please eat me."
You misheard him. He actually says "I'm the obligatory Rhyming Character in an 80s cartoon and I am therefore worthless. I taste like Cheese."
But I'll take Wheelie over Roadblock, Snarf, Orko, The Robot From Battle of the Planets (and maybe even Keyop while we're at it) etc., etc.
As I expected; this thread has become complete garbage now.
