View Full Version : To sell? Or not to sell? That is the question...

Long story short, I was in a pretty bad car accident last year (11+ months ago now) and I haven't been able to work since. The money I am currently receiving barely covers my monthly bills, and doesn't leave enough for me to enjoy my #1 hobby :ermm:

To that end, I've been contemplating selling off my 4 (beloved) Black Lantern Chases, to be able to finance the purchase of WoS (I sold off a bunch of other HC, to finance their purchase). In the hope that at a not to distant future date, I'll be able to acquire them back. I'll be back to work......eventually, and I make a great living, so once I am back to work, cash won't be a problem.

The question I guess really is: what's the market like for them right now? I haven't seen too many being sold on the Realms lately, but I did check recent completed E-Bay sales though, to get an idea of selling price. But is it 'worth' it?

BTW, huge Spider-Man fan. WoS looks like it will be my favorite set made. Ever. I really 'need' to get the complete set (didn't for BaTB).

Advice and/or suggestions wanted, welcomed and Repped.

Cheers.

How badly do you want the SRs? Once WoS has been out for a couple of weeks you should be able to pick up a CUR set very affordably; you can then look at getting the SRs once you're back in work, earning money, and hopefully some of them will have settled dwon in price. There's always some SRs that stay high and even increase, but you may yet come out ahead this way.

Badly enough that I am contemplating selling off all of my BL Chase figures to be able to get them, so yeah, pretty badly. The thing is, and this hasn't been the case since I started into HC 5+ years ago, this is the very first time that a set has come out, where I won't just be able to buy whatever I want from it, and in fact I literally have 0 to spend on it. Less than 0 TBH. It's depressing :ermm:

Honestly, I'm pretty glad there are no Chases in this set, 'cause if there were, I'd do bad, bad things to get them :noid: :p

Honestly, you'll probably get more play value out of Web of Spider-Man than you would out of the Black Lanterns.

If I was in your position I'd sell Kal-L and Nekron, and think about keeping Black Hand and Martian Manhunter (who are a decent 300-point team by themselves).

You should sell blood or sperm. You'll never miss those.

If you are able to get them back later with no problems, I don't see why you would not sell them to help you get what you want now.

I need cards for KAL-L & Black Hand! are you willing to sell them?

I'd keep them. But I also agree that you could have the best of both worlds and sell two of the 4 chases (whichever two you favor, keep) and then be able to get some WoS.

Perhaps have the best of both worlds? Compromise is a wonderful thing! It always doesn't have to be "all or nothing".

As if I needed another reason to be horrified by sperm banks.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking the same thing, that I'd get way more play out of the set, than I do the 4 Chases.

I want to, but I really, really, really want WoS.

Yikes :speechles TBH, I wouldn't even know where to go to be able to do something like that........

I was thinking this too. My 'concern' is that I sell them now, and in 4 months when DC75 hits, and the White Lanterns are here, that the BL will shoot through the roof in value, and I'll end up paying an exorbitant amount to get them back :ermm:

Sorry man, but if I sell them, it's all or nothing ;)

Yeah, selling 1 would get me the CUR set, selling 2 would get me the CUR and a couple of the SR that I want most. I may go that route.

Thanks all for the ideas, input and suggestions. I'll have to think on it a little more.

Depends if you're more of a player or collector.

If you're a player then trade the few for the many, ride the wave and pay the extra $$$ to get them back when they get hot again, if you're a collector keep those chase figures and wait the few months and pick up the WoS for fragments of their value when the DC set drops and you're basking in the glow of Black Lantern vs. White Lantern battles.

Contingency Plan

Personally I would do what makes you the happiest.

Since you are such a Spidey fan and really want the set, I would probably lean toward selling them. Like you said, you could always get them back in the future. More than likely, the price will drop a bit. Plus you will probably get more play out of the Spidey set to be honest.

I'm a bit of both, though more of a player than a collector now. I used to be obsessed with getting every figure ever made, not so any more. Since Avengers, I've collected the 1-60 sets (except BaTB), and some Chases, but rarely the LE's.

WoS is a must have for me though, and it seems like this will be the only way for me to get it presently. I "can't" wait a few months for it.

Yeah, I'll be happy to get the WoS set :classic: , but sad to see my BL Chases go :disappointed:

Thanks for the help guys.

THe Important question is: Are you going to be disappointed you sold them when DC75th comes out.

I mean that's how it works for people here at least they sell/trade SRS from the set before for the new set and then regret it one set later "Ok Sure I'll sell you SC Batman".
"BN Starter's out with a new Scarecrow HOT DOG I have all the SC Figure......####"

are those all you have to trade? that is prime trade bait for something that is going to saturate these boards in a few weeks. i will be trading for this set and i may initially pass on all the sr spidey villains.

Yeah, that's a 'concern' too :ermm: Of course, the way my recovery is going, I could still be in this boat when DC75 comes around anyway, but I'll deal with that if/when the time comes.

Well, I have over 2000 figures, probably in the 2500~3000 figure range (about 800~1000 of them are 'generic' figures though), so, no that's not all I have to trade. I just figured, since they are 'new' and 'hot' that they would generate the most interest and possibly $$$$ should I decide to go that route.

Thanks for the input.

Well I have no chase figures but if it was me in your shoe's I think I would keep them. (they are much harder to get than almost anything in the WOS) just my thinking then they will be making WOS for a while after this first run I figure. Then once you are back to work I would get what I wanted from the set. Just my thoughts on the subject. *Kind of what i done for HOT* And I hope you get back to work soon and feeling better.

Yeah, Kal is a killer, but if I get rid of one, I may just get rid of all :ermm:

People have already mentioned that you will be able to get a C/U/R set of WOS pretty cheap soon after it comes out. Then, you can pick and choose what SRs you want. If you buy a case you are getting 8 SRs and which ones you get will completely random. Not to mention that you will still need 8 more for a complete set. Those chase figures are going to be harder to come by than the WOS set and more expensive. I guess it all boils down to what you want to do. Personally, I would hold onto the chases and use my extras to trade for what I want. When you get back on your feet, you can get the rest of what you are missing. This is one of those things that I know I would greatly regret if I did it. Of course, I bought 2 cases of B&B and pulled no chases or a complete set.

You may want to consider ebaying some of your less attractive clix for some cash flow. As ebay is currently offering non-store members 100 free listings a month - your cost is only in FVF.

It may not give you a lot of money - however it is a wider market (make sure that your listings are WORLDWIDE, not just domestic) and it may give you a "spot fix"

Best of luck and hope all is well :)

I would honestly say keep them and either try (I know its hard for me to) to be patient and you can probably trade Kal-l for some of the more expensive SR's and then trade off Nekron for either a CUR set or a bit less. You can get most of the figs you want without having to sell them all off anyway. All of the figs will be in overabundance in two weeks.

I think you should sell them to that EBAY store. They could use a figurehead piece to polish up that $15k lot of theirs.

I believe in the US they give you money when you give blood at a blood bank which is not the case in Canada.

Wouldn't know where to sell sperm either haha.

I seem to remember here in BC in the late 80's~early 90's that they paid you to donate blood, but I know for sure that isn't the case anymore.

As far as the sperm is concerned  crazy Americans :p
