View Full Version : HCREALMS comic fan awards!

I re-read through the wizard fan awards ballot in this week's comics and grew quite annoyed at how every choice was so conventional. I mean... Kevin Smith as an option for favorite author??? UGH! He's ok, but his work, when compared to any of a dozen other writers is VERY lacking. Therefore, I propose that we comic readers here come up with our own comic awards just for the fun of it, but perhaps find a way to notify the winners just so they can feel all special & stuff :-)
Every single choice for best ongoing series in the wizard fan awards is from one of the top 3 publishers: Marvel, Image, Dc. I say that fans can nominate any title from any publisher so long as it released at least 2 issues within 2002 and it is intended to be an ongoing series. Rising Stars, technically, is a limited series; though, at 24 issues, it is longer than some things intended to be ongoing such as Vertigo's THE CRUSADES, which was axed at #20.
How nominations should work: Nominate up to 5 titles but only VOTE for 1. If nominations are seconded up to 5 times, they will begin to be tallied. There is no deadline yet as who knows when people will catch onto this post, if ever.
Categories I intend to put up here:
Best Ongoing Series
Best Limited Series
Best Storyline
Best New Ongoing Series
Best Individual Issue
Best Humor Series
Best Moment
Best Writer
Best Interior Artist
Best Writer/Artist in One
Best Creative Team
Best Cover Artist
Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition
Best Publisher
Best Main Character
Best Supporting Character
Best Superhero
Best Villain
Vote on as many or as few categories as you wish.
Note on "Best Limited Series" & "Best Storyline" categories: Not all of the issues within the story have to have been published in 2002. If they began in 2001 but ended in 2002, I say they are applicable, since the ending makes or breaks a story. ALSO, the story/series must be COMPLETE as of voting time, hence disqualifying "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol. 2", though Wizard put it up to kiss Alan Moore's butt and look like good fanboys.
Vote away :-) I hope this catches on. I'll be keeping tally.
Best Ongoing Series - New X-Men
Best New Ongoing Series - Ultimates
Best Limited Series - Spider-Man Blackcat
Best Moment - Ultimate Spider-Man. He pulls of the mask of the guy whos been comitting crimes dressed like SPider-Man and framing him to find its......Just Some Guy?

Spider Man / Black Cat: The Evil That Men do is not applicable as it is not complete just yet. If Kevin Smith could only keep to deadlines....

Up to now it has been a decent story yes... but a conclusion can make or break a story and without it no story is complete. Therefore, Spider Man / Black Cat is inapplicable just like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volume 2. I'm sure you can think of SOME other limited series that's better than the 3 mere issues of Spider Man / Black cat even without the disqualification if you think really hard. I could ramble off dozens of great options. IMHO Spidey / Black Cat is good, but far from "great"
"Up to now it has been a decent story yes" - In your opinion, in mine its been a great story so far. Smith has done their relationship well, mixed the heroic and comedic sides of the charcter well, the story was divin by a mystery that was very good and well writen and the new villian was very orginal.
You have Captain Marvel ranked as your best hero, personally I think he's a second rate hero (At best) who shouldn't even be in the top 5. Hes not very orginal (just a Silver Surfer rip off). And I'm sure you can think of some other hero thats better then a mere Silver Surfer rip offif you want too. The guy is a second tear Marvel hero, at best (hes probably closer to 3rd tear, along with Triatholon). I don't think he should be allowed to be picked as best hero.
But you think hes the best so your ranked him that way, I'm not going to tell you that you can't pick Captain Marvel as the best hero so don't tell me a storyline that I've really enjoyed isn't that good so I can't select it as the best limited series I've read this year.

however bad conflicting opinions of the character of Captain Marvel may be, his inclusion as an option for this post does not go against any rules specifically outlined in the initial posting. I wouldn't be annoyed by it if not for that you're the first person to respond and the "uncomplete stories do not apply" rule is the ONLY one I made...

Hey Worlock settle down. Sluggo has a right to his opinion and just because you don't like Kevin Smith doesn't give you the right to tell him it doesn't count. I am personally upset that you didn't even mention Bruce Jones (Hulk) but its your opinion. Any way here are mine.

Actually, Peter David & Dale Keown DID collaborate this year on that same Hulk: the end thing :-) Good work but since it was just one issue they were at a disadvantage for my own nominations when put up against teams that put out a lot of stuff.
I am not getting annoyed at sluggo for picking something by Kevin Smith. I like the Spider Man / Black Cat thing and Smith's Green arrow which ended earlier in 2002 as well; but Spidey/Cat is not complete just yet which is the one and only rule I put in place since finale's are so crucial to the overall story. Plenty of things by Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hitman, punisher) would be forgettable if not for their amazing endings. Suggesting alternatives to Spidey/Cat was not intended as a mockery of Sluggo's tastes but moreso to merely point out that there are many good choices I'm sure one could find with little effort that are VALID by the one and only rule imposed upon nominations. I too would honor Spidey/Cat if not for this rule, though not at my #1 choice or even in top 5 (I drew up my own top 20 and I guess it could make that).
Note: I do like Bruce Jones' Hulk a good deal, but other titles speak to me more strongly. Hulk would be a contender for my top 10 choices of the year, and Jones a contender for top 10 writers, but niether would hit top 5 for me.
On one last little note, I'm interested in hearing sluggo back up the "many" ways in which Captain Marvel is just a knock-off of Silver Surfer. I really would like to know how Marvel's 2nd quirkiest title (1st being Deadpool) so closesly mirrors ol' stone-faced Silver Surfer.
AdamWarlock - My favorite limited series this year was Spiderman/blackcat. I don't care if its not finished yet, the first 3 books have be great and Kevin Smith is a very good writer, hes not goign to drop the ball on the last issue. Your asking something thats all about opinion, don't start stomping on other peoples opinions and saying there are better books to pick from. LIke I said before I think Captain Marvel is a second tear hero at BEST and no deserving of even being on the "best hero" list, but I never would tell you to pick someone better.
My choice still stands.
And yes it was Ultimates #5 when Capt kicked Bruce Banner. I find it interesting you would pick that since most of the people I know HATED that and thought it was SOOOO out of character for Cap. I never had a problem with it (I don't really like it or hate, just something he did).

Kicking hulk in the balls or whatever is greatly out of character for the core Marvel Universe captain America sure... but that's the fun freedom allowed by relaunch universes such as in the Ultimates. So these friends of yours, sluggo, point out how strange it is for Cap to kick a man when he's down but NOW how strange it is for Henry Pym to blast his wife with poison spray? Amusing :-) Kind of like how Michael Moore points out that people were disgusted by a scene in his first film, "Roger & Me" where a woman skins a dead rabbit for food but not one complaint over showing footage of a real execution.

I do have to support AdamWarlock to a certain extent. An ending can make or break a story. Origin is a perfect example, it started of great and then just became one big steaming pile of horse...well you know what I mean.
On the other hand you wanted people's opinions and that is exactly what Sluggo gave you. Just let it go.
Ultimates 5 was just an all around excellent book. Hulk trying to kill Freddie Prince Jr because he shooting up with the super serum. It was the first time the Ultimates were in action. Then Captain America just smashing Banner in the face. The book was just great and you just couldn't ask for anything more.
Even though Ultimate Cap isn't the same as "normal"cap my friends agrument still maeks sense. Cap kicked an unarmed, helpless man. That doesn't really seem like the kind of thing Cap would do. Hes still the same character with the same values.
The Hank Pym think wasn't as out of character. He's gone though some very unstable peroids in "the normal universe" and done things along that same line (drinking, nervous break down etc...), but Cap attacking an unarmed, helpless person it TOTALLY out of character for him.
"themark37 - the ending of Orgin was great. The real Logan comes looking for him, he accidently kills rose and goes off into the wilderness because that part of him is stronger then the "human" side. That away another great limited series story.
